The Original Mission

To those on the outside looking in, being a Fan-Guy or Fan-Gal is all about collecting a lot of stuff based on make-believe, and the sooner we all grow up the better. And yeah okay sure, we do collect a lot of stuff, but the point these well meaning “normies” tend to miss is why we do it. The answer is really quite simple:

We’re passionate people.

To be more precise, we are passionate about works of great imagination. Our list of heroes includes hundreds of creative giants with such names as Disney, Roddenbury, Harryhausen, Valejo, Bradbury, Spielberg, Romero, Wrightson, Goldsmith, Whedon, Miyazaki, Henson, Herbert, Blanc, Miller, Pratchett, Melendez, Tolkien, Lassiter, Asimov, Lucas, Jackson, and let’s not forget…Serling.

One of the true greats, Rod Serling believed that every episode of his landmark creation The Twilight Zone had to have a message, but the message should not be at the expense of the entertainment, and the entertainment should not be at the expense of the message. And why? If you got the message, terrific, if you didn’t you were still guaranteed a great time. That philosophy is at the heart of all that we do here at Soul Geek.

There are Fan-Guys and Fan-Gals out there who are hoping to find “a geek of their own”,

someone who is just as passionate about works of great imagination as they are. On the

other hand, there are those with a deep desire to take that passion to the next level by

using it to become artistic creatives in those fields of science fiction, horror, fantasy and

animation they so love. Our goal here is to encourage both with a gentle nudge.

We would love nothing more than to see each and every creative Soul Geek member, from artists to writers, actors to filmmakers, make the transition from just a “fan” to a true professional. However, if there is a pair of members out there with such creative potential who choose not to take advantage of their gifts in that way - and yet manage to find one another, fall head over heels, and thus decide to spend the rest of their lives together, well then hey, we’ve still done our job! And that is why we have not one, but two mottos: “Find Your Soul Geek at SoulGeek” and “Where The Passion of Fandom Thrives.”

Thank You, Mr. Serling

THE OG "ABOUT US"

It all started with a Gal.

On June 11th 2006 The Mint, a Los Angeles area music club, hosted a Battlestar Galactica Season 2 CD release party, sponsored by La-La Land Records.  This event featured Galactica composer Bear McCreary and the rest of the Galactica musicians (mostly former members of Oingo Boingo) as they played live cuts from the season 2 soundtrack.  Emcee for the evening was Actor Richard Hatch and the composer for the original Battlestar Galactica, Stu Philips, was a special guest.

Near the front of the line of excited Fan-Guys & Fan-Gals waiting to get into this once-in-a-lifetime event was a Couple who looked very happy together.

And that’s where the Gal comes in.

This particular Gal had driven in from San Diego to attend the event, and when she saw this happy Fan-Guy/Fan-Gal couple she couldn’t help but with a tiny smile remark in a wistful tone:

“I hope I can find a Geek of my own here.”

This struck the couple.  And when the event was over they couldn’t help but wonder about that Girl.  She was young, she was pretty, AND she was enough of a Fan-Gal to drive all the way from San Diego to Los Angeles for a Battlestar Galactica event.  That kind of Fan-Gal should have had Fan-Guys falling all over themselves to date her.  And yet, here she was hoping to find someone.

This got the couple wondering about what online resources were out there specifically designed to network and bring fans just like her together.  What they found wasn’t very encouraging.  The Fan-Guy observed that there didn’t seem to be much where the world of Fandom and all its many facets were truly understood - something “huge” where you can tell that the creators really get the passion behind being a fan.”  And to this, his Fan-Gal asked: “Then why don’t you create one?”

So with that little nudge, and the words of a Fan-Gal from San Diego as inspiration, work on SoulGeek.com began.

Knowing that Fan-Guys and Fan-Gals can spot a pretender a mile away, it was decided to build the project from the ground up almost entirely from scratch. The scope of the project proved to be so massive, with so much original code being written, that at times it required up to four full-time coders working around the clock. These coders worked in concert with a team of designers that included one chief designer, three artists and two writers – Fan-Guys and Fan-Gals all – who dedicated themselves to making Soul Geek a reality! With a lot of coffee, Chinese food, Otter Pops and a tiny apartment converted into a design office (with 4 PC’s that were always humming into the wee hours), SoulGeek.com was born in July of 2007 – just over a year after that fateful concert!

Soul Geek is not a sub-division of some giant dating service out to cash in on geeks. We truly are a homegrown community created and run by fans just like you! Geeks who love it all, from Movies, Books, Comics, and Collectables - to Anime, Video Games, Cosplay, Fan-Art & Fan-Fic... and moreover Geeks who feel “at home” with the world of passionate fandom found at conventions around the globe! And we never forget, that it all started with a Gal…

…a Fan-Gal.
