|My SOULGEEK Self:||
Someone once asked me that tired, old, nerd-baiting question about which was better, Star Wars or Star Trek. My answer: I respect the Trek, and I'm down with the Force, but at the end of the day, I'm going to Babylon 5 — and I'm getting there aboard Serenity after taking connecting flights on the TARDIS and the Red Dwarf.
I love to listen to people tell stories as much as I enjoy telling them myself, which is why I worked as a broadcast journalist for a number of years, and why I'm now involved in blogging and podcasting. I'm also currently a freelance writer/communications consultant, and I'm going back to school to get a B.Ed so I can teach high school English (with the dream of working sf&f into the curriculum). I also volunteer as a teaching assistant at a local high school, and I volunteer teaching emergency preparedness classes for a local city. And for the past few Christmases, I've been Santa Claus for a couple of charities at their community parties.
I love comedy almost as much as I love science fiction and fantasy. My favourite time of year is autumn — especially Hallowe'en! I enjoy talking for hours with those who are close to me about every subject imaginable, but also sitting quietly together and reading, or watching TV/movies. I cook, bake, and barbecue. I enjoy travel and going for the occasional hike, sometimes under the stars or in the hush of falling snow. Depending on the situation, I can be chatty, outgoing and an organizer, or I can play a supporting role, or just sit and quietly observe. When I'm not reading/watching/listening to genre stuff, I enjoy learning about history and science. I have two cats who are loving but bossy.
|The SoulGeek I'm Looking For:||
I'm looking for a woman who loves to laugh, who is compassionate and passionate, who has a strong sense of self and what she likes, but is willing to try new things while recognizing that different people can like different things. I'm looking for a partner, someone who will be the Delenn to my Sheridan, the Zoe to my Wash, the Gina to my Porco Rosso.
|Ideally, if I could be any character from the worlds of Sc-Fi, Horror & Fantasy I would be:||
|But I'm probably more like:||
Thomas Tudbury — The Great and Powerful Turtle
|In a Nutshell|
|I'm Into:||Science Fiction, Fantasy, Animation, Anime, Comic Books, Fan Conventions, Film Scores, Fan Clubs and Fan Organizations|
|My Other Car is:||a Dragon|
|Why I love Sci-Fi, Horror, Fantasy, Animation, etc...||
Science fiction and fantasy — the wider genre universe in general — has always filled me with wonder and excitement, and the sense of possibility. They've inspired me to learn about the real world as much as explore the realms of the imagination. They've underscored the importance of storytelling and the power of language, and how they can bring people together or drive them apart. Through fandom, I've made new friends. But most importantly, I've enjoyed and appreciated how sf&f can help us understand and empathize with different people who have different perspectives and come from different walks of life.
|Some of my SCI-FI Favorites include:||
Books: Hyperion, the Dark Eden series, The Martian Chronicles, 2010 - Odyssey 2, the Dinosaur Lords trilogy, the Clockwork Century series, the Years of Rice and Salt, Julian Comstock, Blindsight, The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Let’s not forget Prisoners of Gravity, a TV show that wasn’t a fictional story, rather a non-fiction show that explored themes and figures in sf&f (and made use of a pinch of fiction as part of its set-up). One of the best explorations of science fiction and fantasy, ever, and the precursor to every podcast and vlog about the genre.
Movies: Star Wars, Ghostbusters (original), Fanboys, Bladerunner series, Aliens, Tron, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet, Close Encounters, Serenity, Escape from NY series, King Kong (original & Peter Jackson remake), Godzilla (original), The Last Starfighter, Star Trek II - the Wrath of Khan, The Terminator, Deadpool, Mad Max - Fury Road, Ant-Man, Superman - The Movie, Pacific Rim, Spider-Man - Homecoming, The Avengers, Logan, Super 8, The Black Hole (yeah, I'll own this).

|Some of my COMIC BOOK/MANGA/WEBCOMIC favorites include:||

Darkhorse titles: Aliens, Predator, Aliens vs Predator, Terminator, Rome West, Hellboy, Serenity.
IDW: Ghostbusters, Godzilla - The Half-Century War.
DC: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Sandman, Watchmen.
Marvel: Star Wars - Vader.
Boom Studios: Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China.
New England Comics: The Tick.
...and anything else that interests me when I'm browsing.
|Some of my GAMING favorites include:||
Video Games; When I was a kid, I shared a ColecoVision console with my brother and hit the arcades when I could. These days, I'm not much of a video game player, but I do enjoy the Virtua Fighter series once in a while, House of the Dead, and 80s arcade classics like Ms Pac-Man and Galaga.
RPG's: I haven't played D&D for years, but I used to play a lot as a teen with some friends, and could get back into it with the right group. We played a little Rifts and James Bond as well.
Table Top Games: I don't play often, but my nephew and niece made me a huge fan of Ghost Fighting Treasure Hunters.
|Some of my FILM, TV etc... SCORING favorites include:||

The score for LOTR.
Christopher Franke's theme for the destruction of B5 at the end of the finale episode "Sleeping in Light".
The score for Superman - The Movie.
The theme from Star Wars.
Horner's score for Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan.

|Some of my SIGNING/AUTOGRAPH EVENT favorites include:||
If I'm interviewing a favourite author in person for my podcast, I'll ask them to sign one of their books in my collection, and if there's time, I'll buy them a drink or lunch, and those interview-and-signing-related conversations are always fun and enlightening. I also go to signings at Worldcon (on the occasional year when I attend) or VCon, and, again, conversations with authors can be enjoyable.
|Some of my COLLECTIBLES favorites include:||
My book collection is something that I enjoy immensely. Among my favourites: an advance bookseller's review copy of A Game of Thrones that I had Martin sign. The uniqueness and realness of our conversation during this friendly, impromptu signing was what really adds the value for me.
There's also a special place in my heart for my Ghostbusters hockey jersey, and my replica of Wang's jacket from Big Trouble in Little China.
|Some of my CONVENTION favorites include:||
I go to VCon almost every year, and attend Worldcon every few years (Winnipeg was my first WC ever, and I've also been to Montreal, London, and Spokane, with plans laid to go to Dublin).
One of my favourite things about cons is stumbling into off-the-cuff conversations with other fans. While I enjoy interviewing people for my podcast, watching panel discussions, and getting books signed, the best parts of a convention are often the random conversations one can have with other attendees — we may never meet again, but for a few minutes, there's a real and (usually) enjoyable connection with a fellow fan. That's what makes cons worthwhile.
|Some of my COSPLAY favorites include:||
I'm not a cosplayer myself because I can't sew to save my life, but I have a huge respect for cosplayers. I like the people who either put a lot of home-made, detailed work into their costumes, or others whose costumes may be simple but are wacky and unique or reference things way out in left field. A few years ago at Worldcon in Spokane, I saw a young woman who'd put an amazing amount of detailed work into her female Immorten Joe costume, but equally impressive was a guy who was dressed fairly simply as Captain Kangaroo (and happened to be a dead ringer for him too).
I suppose if I knew a good costume maker, I could probably be convinced to dress as Captain Chaos, Volstagg, or Ambassador Kosh. Friends have also suggested I could pass for a redheaded version of Walter from The Big Lebowski, but those yellow glasses... those weird yellow glasses...
|Some of my FAN CLUB/FAN ORGANIZATION favorites include:||
I was a big fan of the now-defunct blog SF Signal and the community that it created.
I'm also a fan of the community that gathers around my local science fiction and fantasy specialty bookshop.
