Oh, great! I’m really glad I didn’t call this one, because I enjoy stuff with a point and humor more than hacking and slashing.
Not that this comic could exist without the basic element of danger and conflict that gives its situation a reason for existence - but it’s the other stuff that makes us care about the characters.
Both elements have to be present, and going this way, I think, serves balance better (as well as avoiding a cliche so common that it led me to expect the other way as inevitable).

So. Perhaps “the unveiling” is some sort of memorial to his mother? Sounds like a bit of a Big Deal. Kind’a hoping so. Gonna be a shock to a lot of people with Zona & Tula suddenly in attendance. In fact, really cool if so … Zona gets one small opportunity to experience the family life that Mentl comes from, which would only bode well for their relationship.

Suit and tie?! Run Mentle Run! They are trying to make you conform to society! To take away your creativity! It only takes one time and you will become one of them! A…a…A DRONE of Society!! For the love of Zona man RUN!
As a side not let me give a little history. The neck tie was created in Queen Elizabeth’s time (Could be queen victoria) and, I am ashamed to admit this, it was created by a man! He was a pop n jay noble in her court. He happened to make a flip remark to the queen about something. Then she said,”Oh really?” She smiled thinly, “The you may as well bring your own noose tomorrow as I may have to hang you.”
The next day the courtier showed up with a fancy silk hang man’s noose with frilly lace around his neck.
The Queen was so amused and thought it not only quite funny but quite attractive. She forgot about hanging him. The next day everyone was wearing them at court. And so began the history of the neck tie. Man betrayed by a man right into our very own leash and choke collar. Hope he burns in hell next to the person who created the neck rough before him.

Since Mentl’s words end on a cliffhanger M-dash (that’s the dash twice as long as the regular one)…I suspect Zona is about to come into view and make her presence known. Barely clothed in Mentl’s offer of a robe, of course.

In one page we get a sense of the years-long family dynamic. Mentl has long been the irresponsible and “disappointing” child while Sandy inherited all the responsibility and favor. Mutual resentment abounds.
But love, too. Sandy cares enough to make sure he keeps his commitments and doesn’t embarrass himself. Mentl seems to accept he needs an occasional intervention. And she needs to see what we all see–the progress he has made toward mature self-regulation and his capacity for deep commitment to his interests (music) and his relationships (Zona).

FYI — “Unveiling” is a Jewish funeral custom. You’ve got three days to put the departed in the ground. Then a year later their grave is marked with a memorial stone.

Called It!
Which accounts for the year plus on this end for Mentl as we know he was back for a couple of months at least when mum Rachel died. He had pawned Yanora’s ring and re-connected with Zero and was working on writing a song in a new apartment that he had already given a “lived-in” look to.
And an unveiling can sometimes be as big of a megilla than the shiva if any close family or friends did not make it to the interment because of timing distance issues. It’s the one part of a death-related ceremony you can plan out months in advance. Well without being a sicko or psycho, anyway.

P.S. not to get too Freudian or anything, but it’s easy to see why Michael has always been a tit-man.
Ha! just realized, Sandra thinks as the new Alpha female of clan Levy that control of Michael’s “buttons” has passed to her. And she just thought Shiksa Goddess was an apt phrase by Wendy Wasserstein.

Right. She’s going to explain that Mentl is just house-sitting, and doesn’t really own a movie studio or whatever. After all, we know that Mentl’s spun a few stories in the past, and from Sandra’s point of view, why else would somebody like Zona hang around with Mentl…

Oh gawd I cannot wait for the next update or 2 and see Zona walk down the steps with a skimpy looking robe and the cat in arm and see the look on Sandi’s face! John Savard probably right she will probably assume Mentl did something to lure this poor girl here. or else assume she is a prostitute and THAT certainly won’t go over well. Ir will take a little convinceing for some one who know Mentl well (or at least his old self well) to believe a 15 like Zona could be with him.

Got a feelin that Mentl has told Sandy about Zona but up until now Sandy has assumed that Mentl is full of it and didn’t believe a word he said. And now it’s gonna be (@Hans) J.A.P. meets B.E.P. oooh that’s horrible. Rats now I gotta wait for the next update.

Not to be argumentative, but neckties as modern fashion items actually descend from neck cloths worn by Croation soldiers in a unit which came to the attention of the King of France during the 30 years war. They were presented at court as heroes, and the King created the “order of the Cravatte” in thier honor, and neckcloths became a fashion craze for both men and women. Honore de Balzac wrote an entire book on cravats and neckwear, and the tie was the bastard child of this craze.
Thank god that ties are becoming less popular as office wear!

The turn-of-phrase you mention is more a reflection of the rather large stick in her derriere. Probably because her idiot-little-bother, (typo intentional) got Mom’s house and other boodle, regardless of the fact that she, Sandra, is probably a corporate lawyer pushing 7 figures. I recognize the type only too well. Those 23 great-aunts I mentioned? Most of them spawned.

It’s quite understandable that Sandra will react negatively to the notion of Michael boffing she who is apparently an Aryan Überwench. But thinking about these possibilities led me to note something else. Zona, being from… out of town… doesn’t even know what a Jew is. In trying to explain things, Michael, despite not having met Laemul, saw enough on his visit to Kivalia to perhaps attempt to explain that Jesus is perhaps something like Thrasu.
Which raises the question: who broke Thrasu’s bones? And all sorts of strange possibilities for parallels between Zona’s world and ours flow from this.
