    Ah-HAH.

That’s what detective-types say when they find significant clues, according to Spenser. Ah-hah!

Will Our Girls get to say “Ah-Hah!’ tonight, or is JED about to Pull One, as we say in the Zona-reading business.

Ooo! I cannot wait to see Mentl’s reaction when Zona walks in the door. I wonder if it will be mid-song?

  5. alurker
    July 3rd, 2012 at 3:25 am

… and then she walked in the door. The music screeched to a halt as every eye turned to look at her. Somebody coughed and a voice from the stage said -

    “Zona…?”

They look a little dressed up to be practicing somewhere, so I’ll go out on a limb and believe they’re actually playing a gig, and it’s the “one more place” that Nan has in mind. I think we can all assume that Mentls residual & unconscious magic played whatever part was necessary to get them a gig at the venue on a premium night in L.A. Possibly also working in the background to bring the girls rather directly to him, perhaps something like a homing beacon.

I rather am looking forward to seeing Zona’s & Tula’s reaction to what Mentl’s music sounds like all electrified. Up until now, they’re only familiar with his acoustic sound on Medieval style instrumentation. heh heh heh ….

Hmm, the walls look wierd. Wonder what kind of place this is.

    HOOO YAH!!!!

  11. Phoebe
    July 3rd, 2012 at 5:45 am

@3Xp4t Actually Mentl has commented before how his playing sounded all amped up and not acoustic. Which he thought it was his imagination. I recall him commenting at least once in some forest and once in the Kivalian ball.

  12. Balkin
    July 3rd, 2012 at 5:54 am

I really have to wonder how much of his magic bleeds out for his audiences. He has the potential to be VERY popular! And please, no chicanery! It’s been over a year our time since Mentl returned to our world. Can’t wait for him to get back to ‘The world he belongs in.’ Well, actually, I’m ready for a nice long time in our world for the three of them before they return. So, no rush on going back, just no delaying the meet up! :)

  13. Mick
    July 3rd, 2012 at 5:59 am

Now, will Zona come in & be hurt when she sees him with another woman??? Let’s hope it’s not the tired cliche of his partner kissing him right as Zona walks in.

  14. Mick
    July 3rd, 2012 at 6:00 am

    And where’s Zero ?

  15. AdamZero
    July 3rd, 2012 at 6:10 am

@Balkin. Given JED’s style: Whenever we see Mentl’s music in strange colors with notes and other such up and around in the borders of the panels, it’s been implied that magic is in the air.

So yes, I think right now Mentl is (quite possibly knowingly) using magic to pump up the mood. (Possibly as a defense mechanism for his mother’s death) Or in an honest means to recover. Or just to have a good time. (Those last two seem more like the guy he’s become)

  16. Hwyla

@Lora - I think the walls are supposed to be corrugated metal?

  17. Jean
    July 3rd, 2012 at 7:38 am

A cheap venue would indeed have corrugated metal walls. Doesn’t mean the food, the drinks, or the music will be lousy, though!

  18. Karyl
    July 3rd, 2012 at 8:04 am

Ah, when will we get the big reveal????

  19. Mish_Lady
    July 3rd, 2012 at 8:14 am

This is, as always, worth the wait! I am looking forward to the ladies’ reaction-if they do walk in during this. I could see Mentl finishing up, looking up, and seeing Tula and Zona cheering as Nan claps with a smile.

  20. Valashar
    July 3rd, 2012 at 8:22 am

I can’t see clearly with his long sleeves and the angles he’s shown at, but he seems to still be wearing the copper chain on his wrist. That’s a positive sign.

uh-oh are issues/problems in the future of out lovers?

  22. Descartes

BTW, what pair of lovers doesn’t have problems in their future?

  23. Lebbrin
    July 3rd, 2012 at 9:47 am

Well, whatever happens, I’m fearful that we’ll have to wait. This is right about the time JED likes to pull a scene change. Although we’ll likely get the next page where Mentl spots Zona at the back and then we’ll be whisked back to Erogenia.

LOL. Either way JED, it just keeps getting better. Great page as always.

I am happy to see that the issues with the website have been resolved.
Have a good 4th of July, JED.
Mick, that kind of scene isn’t in JED style, I doubt we will ever see that kind of cliché in his comic.

  26. John Savard
    July 3rd, 2012 at 2:42 pm

I don’t think it’s going out on a limb to anticipate this is the gig to which Zona is headed. Since the venue has corrugated steel walls, I wonder if Mentl’s magic is compensating for what I would expect to be rather horrid acoustics…

  27. Kris
    July 3rd, 2012 at 3:31 pm

If we have a stunned on-stage Mentl moment if/when Zona comes in I’ll be surprised. Admittedly, don’t know much about the place he’s playing, but the stage looks pretty well lit and, in my experience, when the audience lights fall and the stage lights go up you can’t see anything past the stage.

  28. DoctorZuber
    July 3rd, 2012 at 8:32 pm

oh here it comes… Bets on Mentl’s reaction when he sees Zona? I’m going with drug induced hallucination myself.

  29. Balkin
    July 3rd, 2012 at 9:22 pm

Valashar - He’s wearing the bracelet the queen gave him as her symbol when he first got to the Valley of the Moon. I haven’t noticed him still wearing the copper chain, but I have seen in the past that he was still wearing the bracelet. Now I’m going to have to go back through the archives and see if I can spot him with the copper chain!

And come to think of it, have we seen Zona still wearing the chain since he left? Now I gotta check for that as well! ARGH!

  30. Balkin
    July 3rd, 2012 at 10:11 pm

OK, so I went through and looked. Jan 27th, 2012 Page 548, Mentl is writing a song and the copper chain is visible on his right ankle. And May 4th, 2012, page 585, after Zona and Tula come to our dimension Zone has the copper chain on her right ankle in Nan’s shop where they changed into more ‘modern’ clothing.

So, yes, both are still wearing their chains, and Mentle also is still wearing the queens bracelet. Nice. :)

  31. Plot_Device
    July 4th, 2012 at 12:05 am

I don’t mean to be a Debbie Downer…but I think the other band members might be a *bit* peeved when he drops everything to go back with Zona…

  32. The MacNut
    July 4th, 2012 at 2:56 am

Well, since Plot_Device started it, I’m going to run with it; let’s not forget that Mentl most likely STILL believes he enchanted Zona into loving him against her will-it’s why he left Erogenia in the first place after all. He’s going to need to be convinced otherwise if there is to be the expected Happy Renunion. Maybe he’ll be happy to see her at first, but then he’ll remember why he left and become concerned that Zona isn’t in her right mind…

Corrugated metal walls in a club?! I’m having a hard time imagine this.
Of course, I’m having a hard time imagine it in any building; it’s a lousy building material. Although my brother did tell me it’s quite common in Australia, and maybe it is too in California? (But seriously; why would anyone use that as a building material?)

  34. Raoul
    July 4th, 2012 at 3:29 am

Lora, most of the dives I’ve been in have used exactly that, and especially anywhere that has live music regularly, from Hal ‘n Mal’s to the Hoka to The Country Music Palace to Thunderbirds (the latter three are, sadly, no more). Of course, all my bar-hopping has been done in the American South; I know beans about California. But this is exactly what I’d expect.

  35. qwerty_42
    July 4th, 2012 at 6:16 am

Corrugated metal (recycled from the roof of some other building and thereby not entirely without holes) is probably some of the cheapest materials available anyone would consider building walls with. They stop most of the weather if it is not too heavy and limit the view of the inside but nothing else.

  36. Rix Scaedu
    July 4th, 2012 at 6:44 am

Lora, speaking as someone with a colorbonded corrugated iron roof on the house, it works quite well as a roofing material. It’s waterproof, doesn’t shatter in hail or from falling branches, and it lasts for years.

If it was being used as walls I would expect the building to be a shed.

  37. Mongo Nunya
    July 4th, 2012 at 7:12 am

regarding the corrugated metal walls, I , until recently, built wood frame and metal frame pole barns and warehouses for a living. Those wall sheets are hiding the frameing, so they are not the outside walls , they are whats called ” liner panels ” and belive me , corrugated metal paneling is very common in liner paneling

    He… is OWNING that stage.

  39. Lora
    July 4th, 2012 at 11:27 am

It doesn’t heat regulate. ;) And really, using it for walls? It just doesn’t get used here, because it’s consider too low quality for house building. (Plus it’s not exactly pretty to look at). We prefer brick (and concrete).
To me that sort of thing would be for shed use only, not a club. I’d think a club would have at least a little bit of style even if it’s low end. But again, I don’t know much of California. Just know the motorways are shitty (at least they were in 2007 when I was there). :P I’ll never forget being shaken apart on the L.A. motorway in a shuttle cap, lol.

Um… don’t forget - the Urrtts (sp?) and whatever other transdimensional bad-guys are around as well. Mentl only banished one that we know of…. I think it’s more likely we’ll see them either just before or just after Mentl and Zona see each other again. It’s even possible the bad guys have been waiting for this moment just as much as we have…

  42. Prairie Son
    July 4th, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Actually, corrugated iron is used when you want easily repositional walls, so for a club they could be used to block out spaces to make the area smaller when you expect a smaller crowd (so it doesn’t look too empty). You can’t redecorate in a hurry, but if they’re castered you can reset in maybe an hour.

    Also, wiki ‘Quonset hut’.

@The McNut: I agree with your comment and that’s why I’m hoping for him to be singing his “I Love Her So” song when Zona makes her entrance.

It will kill off the last doubt she has so that when she grabs him off the stage and checks his tonsils with her tongue, it should communicate that this lady LOVES HIM, not his ‘magic’.

  45. Hypertrophobic

So when Zona walks in, does he start singing The Skyliners’ Since I Don’t Have You?

  46. Hypertrophobic
    July 5th, 2012 at 2:15 am

Also, corrugated metal is sometimes used for walls on warehouses. Maybe the club is in an old warehouse in an otherwise gentrified/gentrifying neighbourhood. Not the best for accoustics, but roomy and cheap.

  47. Raoul
    July 5th, 2012 at 5:05 am

Exactly, Hypertrophobic. Most of the really big-space venues I’ve seen are converted warehouses. Like I said, these were mostly considered dives, and that’s exactly what Nan indicated they were heading for.

  48. Lora
    July 5th, 2012 at 5:14 am

I’m not doubting that. I just can’t see it as fitting, because it’s not normal here. It’s one of those cultural differences. :P
Hmm, how’s the accustics in such a place? I imagine they much be bad with those walls. Anyone ever been to such a place with music playing?

  49. 3Xp4t
    July 5th, 2012 at 6:04 am

Reading through the commentary about corrugated sheet metal walls all I can think is … Man! So many of you have not lived! :-(

My gawd/dess … most of the best music I’ve ever heard and seen performed has been in re-purposed warehouses. That’s a few hundred shows over the past three and a half decades. You don’t know what live music is, what real performance is, until you’ve seen a no name band blow your mind for a $5 cover charge in a rusted out dive with concrete floors sticky from 20 years of dried beer and 150 people experiencing a legendary show that 10,000 people will claim to have seen ten years later because they missed out.

I remember the Dave Mathews Band opening for Blues Traveler in a converted warehouse exactly like this, both bands playing blistering sets while the audience lost their mind on warm beer and 100 degree temperatures. Both bands took the stage for an encore at the end of the night and played a version of All Along the Watchtower that was so hot it melted the roof off. There weren’t 200 people there that night and almost nobody had ever heard of Dave Mathews or John Popper.

That’s what I’m talking about, people. When you’re paying $150 or $250 to see a Name in a Big Name venue … you’ve already missed it. The magic is gone by then.

All the rock music “fans” I see posting here … I am outright shocked to see people posting who know not a clue. It’s dives like this where legends are born. Even the bands that don’t become legendary, some of the most amazing music ever played is performed in venues like this. Here is where it’s raw, it’s real. It’s ALIVE.

Fer f’cuk’s sake: GET OUT OF YOUR MOMMIES’ BASEMENTS AND LIVE A LITTLE, ALREADY !!! Jeeeeesh!

  50. Raoul
    July 5th, 2012 at 2:34 pm

@Lora Like I said, I’ve *only* been to live shows in bars at such venues. As for acoustics, best I can remember (this has been well over a decade ago) some of these were big enough that the band sounded pretty much like they were playing outdoors with walls nearby, say on a town square. (Specifically my town, which has a courthouse in the center, so there’s a back wall, too, for sound to reflect from). So some echo, but not as much as you might expect. And the roof at T-birds had exposed insulation, so I’m guessing it was sonically dead.

Hal’n Mal’s is a different story, but I’m guessing they have a sound system that can be tweaked to compensate for anything. All I know is the acoustic duo playing the night I was there sounded good.

(And talk about cultural differences: you wouldn’t be-LIEVE what gets labeled a ‘club’ or a ‘lounge’ around here. Hole-in-the-outhouse might come closer to actually describing it. )

Of course, most people there were soon too drunk to care much, if they ever did. Most places like this, the alky-hol, not the band, is the focus of attention. I don’t imagine this one would be much different (hence Nan’s reaction to going there). On the other hand, most bands aren’t fronted by a sorcerer. I imagine this band sounds however Mentl subconsciously wants it to.

  51. Prairie Son
    July 5th, 2012 at 7:47 pm

@3Xp4T Warehouses? You poor, pathetic, culturally deprived young’un. Everyone knows the really hot acts are blasting the sawdust out of an old barn on the East 40. :P

  52. Kris
    July 5th, 2012 at 10:43 pm

@Mikey Likes It: Forgive me if I’m wrong, but your comment suggests you may be a little off about the Mentl magic as it pertains to Zona thing. There isn’t a loves him vs loves his magic issue. It’s an issue of possible bewitchment by the magic and Mentl’s guilt about that possibility and what it would contextually mean. Again, forgive me if I’m understanding your comment wrong.

  53. hjp
    July 5th, 2012 at 11:48 pm

Corrugated sheet metal is the postmodern building material of the moment. Particularly popular for Green building projects here in the Pacific NW. Still found in the sort of industrial zone clubs, of course. When I lived in LA you’d only see it in Quonset huts, but that was last century.

  54. Lora
    July 6th, 2012 at 4:46 am

I’ll admit I’m not much a concert goer, and the concerts I’ve been too fall in three categories: outdoor open scene; tent; indoor (brick, concrete, (wood)). Most have been in the tent category.

@Raoul: Lol. Well, if any place can get called a club, why not a repurposed warehouse?

  55. Jean
    July 7th, 2012 at 12:04 pm

One of the most popular playing venues for touring groups in the outlying areas near (but not in) Seattle is the Muckleshoot Casino (named for the local tribe)…and its exterior looks rather like a corrugated-steel dive that’s been added on to over the years. But they’ve managed to lure in some rather big names. *shrug* A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, even if you keep staring at the thorns.

  56. Prairie Son
    July 7th, 2012 at 8:21 pm

Hey JED, can I request some Nitty Gritty Dirt Band? I just got back from their show up in Eureka, and am in the mood for some more.

  57. Ed
    July 8th, 2012 at 12:10 am

I was thinking warehouse at the pier rave type thing, grab space where and when you can. A lot of warehouses do not need insulation or worry about keeping things cool or warm.

Now, does blondie come on to Mentl afterwards? Bad news if Z walks in.

Is Z even as scary strong and fast on Earth? Maybe her speed and strength were augmented in her magical world… all we’ve seen is her grab a guy, and she was a lot bigger anyway, so it proves little.

Now, does Mentl realize he still has at least SOME magic? And how much? Or does he freak, thinking he is facing Zona for the first time with no magical mojo?

  58. datatroll
    July 8th, 2012 at 10:50 pm

I realize it would completely be against the entire mood of this thing, and so it would never happen. But as a big fan of “A connecticut yankee in King Arthur’s court” and it’s thousands immitators, there is a little part of me somewhere that thinks it would be ridiculously awesome to see something like that happen here. Maybe not to that degree, but something “Army of Darkness”-ish maybe. That is one thing about the fantasy meets modern genre that always vexed me, that when it is all said and done skill with a sword, bow, or even magic is great, sure. But a couple of guys from Mentl’s hood that came along for the ride packing AK’s, 9 mil’s, and a couple cases of ammo would be a pretty fine how-do-you-do to the Urtts of the world. Theoretically, Mentl could give up fighting with magic and just spend the time bouncing back and forth between here and there selling gold in pawn shops to get reloads.

Let’s be real for a second. We know magic works in the modern setting, because we have seen him do it. I also know that a person can BUY MILITARY and ARMORED VEHICLES ON EBAY. What is available changes all the time obviously, but I have seen everything from WWII era APC’s to decomissioned CURRENT military vehicles. (My personal favorite has to be the old “Wells Fargo” box style armored cars that pop up every now and again.) Again, it really doesn’t fit the tone of the comic. So it would never happen. But just for a second can you imagine the look on the faces of a horde of urtt’s when out of a flash of light this multi-ton wheeled land leviathan appears, rolls right up into the middle of the horde, and then a dozen little tiny doors slide open all around it and the shooting starts? It really can’t happen, because if it did the new “Challenge of Zona” would be learning how to drive the fuel truck.

But it’s fun to think about.
