I think Nan is appreciative too, or just glad to see the back of Carl. The expression on Zona’s face is interesting. “Looks like Fire Tribe, Acts like Hawk. Whoa… I’m in love with Mentl, I’m in love with Mentl, I’m in love with Mentl….”
I’ll have to retract my earlier comment. Carl has definitely shrunk! NICE entrance of a new character, John. Hope Boric shares, he’s too nice a kid for Tula to hurt. Glad you’re feeling better, the things our bodies do to us as we age.

Ok. JeD yet again pulls a left field on us and I likes it.
In regards to the comment, the big dog doesn’t need to as a rule of thumb. They say thier bit and shut up. There are noisy big ones around though.
I do like the way this one distracted Carl onto himself, explained it to him succinctly and got him the hell out of there. Pure class act on his part. Nan’s happy to see the back of him, Zona’s seen it dealt with. Tula and Nan both got that ‘rowr-rowr’ look going on too. Good first impression, I like the boy so far.
JED - you look after you, first and foremost. Kidney stones are serious man and much as we love our Zona and want you to tell the story asap, not one person here is going to say anything other that ‘we’ll wait, get better, THEN tell story time’.

For some reason this guy makes me think, “really professional bouncer.” The kind that can resolve potential conflict with a few soft words and polite suggestions and who does not resort to violence unless they have no other choice. And who once that point is reached has the competence to resolve problems of violence swiftly and with a minimum of fuss and harm.
I feel sorry for whatever other women Carl might try to latch on to, though.

Erogenian or not, he could pass. I’m not so sure about the bracelet; for all we know, his mom or dad visited across the dimensions years in the past, and he’s someone special’s progeny.
Either way, he’s certainly following the key rules of the trade: “I want you to be nice. Ask him to walk. Be nice. If he won’t walk, walk him. But be nice. If you can’t walk him, one of the others will help you, and you’ll both be nice.” For all we know, he’s prepared for final part of the rules: “…until it’s time to not be nice.”

Small dogs are fighting inertia, gravity and teeth that are 1/2 of their size. Big dogs tend to have limited brain capacity. Act like a big dog equals must BE a big dog..

This is what a friend of mine (who is a bouncer) calls “pre-bouncing” It’s a diplomatic way of cooling a potentially violent situation. It’s good because no one gets hurt, there’s no property damage, and everyone saves face.
Good times are had by all. However, whenever the pre-bouncer has to do his thing, there are at least two other bouncers watching and waiting, who will not be as helpful and accommodating, unless they are helping you by accommodating your desire to get your @$$ kicked.

I’m betting on it being a simple copper bracelet. However, given that he seems to be in the metaphorical loop of what goes on in several clubs, I’m imagining that this could be a subliminal hint that he will be helpful in finding Mentl.
Or, perhaps he and his no doubt lovely butt will vanish forthwith. /rampant speculation

@Johan Broad: It occurs to me that since he has contacts that will allow people entry in other clubs and a free drink on his card alone, this might actually be part of a network between bouncers. This way they separate someone upset from someone else who wishes to be left alone and when the upset person arrives in a new club they will know to keep a quiet eye on him or her until they are sure things will stay calm.

yah know, i missed the bracelet at first, i just re-read and saw it. now, while it COULD be a red-herring. torques and similar bracelets are, i BELIEVE, to be present in either Irish or Scottish jewlery. which might also suggest that there is some parallelism at work here. of course, too, the devil wears a friendly face when he wants to get in good with us (Akio/Dios from Utena anyone?) which this could simply be a shunach worshipper trying to get in good with the girls for his own plan (Mentl maybe?) at any rate, all this is speculation my part, but since i think like a villian 99% of the time this is certainly how id go about infiltrating my enemies. especially if my key to victory lies with one of them.

Rereading all the comments something Mace pointed out and I think you’re really good at it JED.
First impressions. When Mentl was introduced, we knew this guy was a down on himself kinda guy. When Zona was introduced we saw the warrior princess straight out. Tula showed up, smiles magic and badass (while horseback)
You’ve done your best to give every character a damn good intro that really cuts into their character. Take this guy (whose name we’ll all memorize the moment it’s posted) We have only ONE page of him and he’s already got the love letters coming in.
It’s awesome, and god DAMN we’d be lost without you. Get well soon.

Could be celtic too… but… i don’t know… I am wary of this new character. I hope I’m wrong as almost everyone here (minus Jason I think) likes him…

-’New guy’ as some are calling him, is acting like the head bouncer. Some call that position a Cooler but really a cooler and bouncer are the same thing. Movies influence people in weird ways. He seems to be doing a good job at it too.
- ‘New guy’ also apears to be wearing a torc. That does not appear to be part of the shirt or a normal necklace. You can see it best in the second and third pannels. Perhap he is a long lost member of the tribes or just a really big guy who likes celtic or viking things.
- JED: Take care of yourself, drink more water. Hope everyhing passes quickly.

First, JED, take care of yourself! If that means more time between updates, we can deal.
Second, New Guy is very smooth and very professional. He seems an integral part of the club scene, and may even give a hint about Mentl’s whereabouts. If that is indeed his purpose, we can only hope for a gratuitous butt shot before he’s done.
Third, like EmmaC, I lean towards wariness of “too good to be true” types, but the characters here tend to be more straightforward. Bad guys are pretty easily identified as such, and good guys are very very good. So Mr. SmoothPro has a better-than-good chance of being exactly what he seems.

‘New Guy’ does have an interesting dress code for being a bouncer at this particular bar. Everything else about the bar suggests a more traditionally upscale look for it’s workers. He ACTS like a bouncer, but his outfit suggests otherwise to me. Maybe it’s just his day off as bouncer from that OTHER bar he suggests Carl visit?
Question - is he blond, as suggested above by someone? I had him pegged as a redhead, just not as intense a red as Tula. Perhaps a rather dark strawberry blond? Or I suppose a light brown with lots of red highlights from the sun - seeing as how this is LA?
As for ‘Science’ - I thought his shoulders and chest looked pretty darn good - so that MUST be one great butt if it overshadows them. I vote for a panel that shows us a full view! Personally, I’m betting on great thighs as well.

Back in the Pleistocene (hint: WIN buttons, Oy gevalt), I was a decoy bouncer as some of our brethren described. My job was to be polite and look intimidating while the main bouncer could assay the situation and decide on a course of action. Since this was anice bar, we had very little trouble. In 18 months we only had to get physical once, but the empathetic walk-out described above was weekly.
To my youth, and may the good Lord prevent me from a relapse!

The bracelet looks like a kind I’ve seen before, being sold by those “magnets = health” people. It also looks like a kind popular in the SCA (medieval society), which could also be where he got the faux lace-up “medieval” style shirt, or at least why he’s wearing it. Lotta people in LA in the SCA, it’s the “Barony of the Angels” after all. (Kingdom of Caid, pronounced Kai-eed)

My, such a lot of comments. It is really cool and really gratifying. Especially so many good wishes, which are really wonderful, and I thank you all. I and my stone are still together. No pain or anything - it’s just hanging out, not really doing anything. Which is sort of part of the “could be five weeks to get rid of it” thing that frankly is for shit because it could double me over any time at all. But, at the moment the only thing is I seem to have a lot less energy, but that could be the drugs plus all the extra hours I’m working at my job. Our New Friend (no relation to any characters in “Something Positive”) has a name, you will learn it on page 596 which I hope to get up tomorrow or the next day. Will I be posting a “scientific” character portrait of him? Have I ever let you down?

I have no qualms with his character, but maybe it’s just me… He kind of looks like a giant zombie. Sickly pale skin, sunken cheeks, rictus type grin, and eyes that don’t seem to focus well.
Let’s not even mention his gait.

You know, this guy was just a little too successful at dissuading Carl. And Zona complied with his request almost immediately. It’s possible that everyone just listened to reason (Zona surprises me less than Carl) but that lazy smile that all the girls have in the last panel make me think this guy is using more than words and an imposing stature to calm everyone down…

I doubt he’s a zombie, he looks fairly in phase with the other characters in the scene.

Is it just me? Either this guy is a bad boy conman or we have just met Tulas Future Copper Chain. Or maybe both. But look at her face in the last panel. That is not a usual face for her.

@Doc Alaska - Sorry mon but nope. Tula’s religious vows prevent her from making those sorts of commitments. Though she did note that celibacy isn’t a requirement, if it was they’d never get an Eregonian into the priesthood.

@Mace - I remember that you are right about ‘no chains’ for the priesthood, however, Tula is also heeded for the position of Queen. I wonder whether one can still be in the priesthood AND be Queen at the same time.
Of course, just because a Queen needs to eventually have children, that doesn’t mean she must be ‘chained’. After all, Tula is only a VERY few years younger than Zona, so Ipola’s commitment to Zonn did not last too many years after he was ‘lost’. Then again, I don’t think we have ever been told whether they wore chains or not.

Is good questions. JED is the man with the definitive answers.
My bet would be she can romp with whoever she wants for as long as she wants to, bear children from them, live more or less as if chained without having chains involved. As for the Queen and priesthood vows - I don’t see Ipola not having a word with Tula before she took those vows if there would be a conflict with her taking the throne as well.
