Every now and again I like to finish a beat with a neat and tidy resolution. Is this one? Hmmmmmmmmm. ;)

    And here’s the hi-rez version:

It’s pretty obvious that Liri wanted a child. Looks like she got a head start. I hope it all works out.

Somehow, Liri chasing that Rhino away is completely adorable.

And at least she’s big enough to shoo wondering rhinos out of the veggie garden. I’ll bet not many local housewives can say that! :)

I love a happy ending :D - although it reminds me of that thing that Tolkien does where you have a happy moment of respite, while things get worse in the outside world, as if waves or trouble are brewing.

Looking really good, again! John, can I be nosey? Are you planning on keeping using the new toys? Or will you leave them confined to the interlude? Either would be good, i think, but if your looking for reader-comments on the approach, then I think they work really well and would love to see their continued use.
    All best,

I really doubt that, after spending money on a better and easier way to produce scenery, our J. E. Draft is suddenly going to stop using it and go back to the old way! Of course, for consistency with previous pages, there may be some occasional scenes to which it is not applicable, at least to every panel - but that is a different matter.

Thus, actual photographs of Venice, California would still be even superior to the new toys, for example.

Looks like Emmon is now officially adopted. He couldn’t have found a better home. Unless…wonder how Erogenians would treat him? I’m guessing he’d still be at his original home in that case?

  10. Fred

This story has a good heart. Thanks JED!

  11. Ike
    April 9th, 2011 at 6:35 am

It seems as if there were any giants among the Erogenians, they wouldn’t have a problem with them. But I don’t remember seeing any giants among the Erogenians.

The prejudice against giants among Kivalians seems pretty specific. Maybe there’s something wrong (other than the obvious) with Thrasu-worship?

  12. ICWT
    April 9th, 2011 at 6:37 am

Brer MacNut - we know Erogenians have room in their cha for a little girl who can throw grown men out of the sandbox, why not a perfectly nice family where the mama shoos rhinos around like chickens. AND, the rhino is smart enough to move! Obviously, this world’s critters are more adaptable than our counterparts (Rhinos in safari parks or at home in Africa will often chase off trucks as competitors). We’ve seen it in the emotional range of the ‘cats (remember, they’re family).

All that verbiage aside. Well put, Friend Taltamir.

cuteness!!! Cinamon bread??? Can I have some too???
Anyway, good to have this beautiful page just before I go in vacation… Will let me drive the 12h with a light heart!!

@Ike: It seems that there is no giant in Erogenia and that they occur only in Kivalian family. And the fact that they appear right before bad bad things and worse mark them as “harbinger of doom” in Kivalian spirit.

    Neat.
And all done in only one page!

BTW just F-our-I, guess we can safely presume that giants are barren?
Looks like they both got enough “practice” after Zony pointed out the technicalities.

I gotta say JD, you’ve given us ups and downs. But this right here? This is right shiny.

I’ll be angry as all hell if the next page has some Urtt spy in the background.

  20. Professor61771
    April 9th, 2011 at 10:33 am

Well we don’t KNOW that Giants are barren. Assuming a magical/social/evoluntionary need for the people to “have” a Giant born every now and then, we would assume they are not a viable species in and of themselves.
I really only see one possible need for a Giant Hero: DRAGON.
I am glad to see the new family together.
Shooing out the Rhino was priceless, thanks JED. And who knows maybe the Giant “magic” helps animals understand them, treat them with respect, etc, etc. Kind of a “Druid” nature kind of thing? After all they might be Nature’s Champions.
    I love this world.

Let me add to the awwws. A Crowning Moment of Funny (the rhino shooing) followed by a Crowning Moment of Heartwarming.

The boy is FIVE!?!?! Wow. Poor kid. He’ll definitely be treated much better here, and he’ll grow up happy. :D thanks JE.

  23. Jean
    April 9th, 2011 at 11:00 am

I’m with OddCod, keep the new system!

Hans, even with perfectly healthy couples, it can take several months of actively trying to get pregnant before conception takes place. Yes, it can happen with just one try, but that’s like the far pointy ends of the bell-curve: rare, compared to the norm. Are Keltan and Liri fertile? We don’t know yet. Maybe, maybe not, but we just don’t know.

In the meantime, their honeymoon is now abruptly over, thanks to childus interruptus. They’ll still be able to have fun, I’m sure, but they’ll probably have to wait for Emmon to fall soundly asleep.

  24. Someguy
    April 9th, 2011 at 11:22 am

I don’t know Jean given the only glimpse into the loudness of there “special alone time” asleep may not do it. They may have to try “could you go gather some random ingredient/play outside for a while Emmon while Liri gets dinner ready sort of thing.

or just learn to be more quiet I guess.

  25. Someguy
    April 9th, 2011 at 11:23 am

Also this page has just too much adorableness. For about a minute all I could do was stare at my screen and in a state of Daww.

  26. Peregrin
    April 9th, 2011 at 11:33 am

Just as everyone else, I like this little resolution with Emmon. Just remember, though - NO THROWAWAY CHARACTERS. Kid’s in the story for a reason.

  27. Lictre
    April 9th, 2011 at 12:11 pm

I think Emmon’s going to get the equivalent of the poor child’s education about adult sexuality, in that he’ll know exactly what the noises are, what’s going on, and that doing those things make Liri and Keltan happy.

The reason it’s the poor kids who get that sort of education in a medieval setting is that often the family simply can’t afford making separate rooms for children, or the parents, either in money or time to build a new home, for a number of years. At that sort of time, privacy was a LUXURY.

In a few years, when he’s old enough that the noises might be enough to affect/frustrate him, that’s when Liri and Keltan might have to learn to be quiet, send Emmon out on errands, or make a little ‘love shack’ for themselves.

  28. ExPaladin

Aww, they’re such an adorable couple. ^_^

  29. Teri
    April 9th, 2011 at 2:03 pm

This page is all sorts of awesome. Liri shooing the rhino away as if it was a pesky dog, her sudden realisation of what Keltan meant when he told her Emmon’s family was like her’s and how she just easily slips into the role of “mum” by offering cinnamon bread and says “Let’s go home.” I love it. Just love it.

  30. Addup2
    April 9th, 2011 at 2:07 pm

Also, I fairly sure the incidence of giants is rare - remember how surprised Tula was to see two giants at the same time. So how often has there been a giant couple to see whether or not they are fertile? added to that we don’t know how long it’s been since we last saw Liri & Keltan, althoug I’m guessing a couple on months only, there just isn’t enough info to know if she’s barren. MAybe the magic that creates giants affects their metabolism and other physiological systems, so Liri might not have had a full menstrual cycle yet!

  31. Soulworker
    April 9th, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Agree with Peregrin….Love the addition to the giant household, but this isn’t an ending…more like a foreshadowing…Would love to see Tula’s eyes pop outta her head when she meets Emmon. =D

  32. Paddy
    April 9th, 2011 at 5:15 pm

Just as a what-if note of future speculation:

What if the blacksmith and his wife decide that maybe Emmon was never actually their kid, but the giant equivalent of a changeling babe, planted on them by Keltan to raise on his behalf? Might we be seeing an anti-giant lynch mob?

  33. Elfguy
    April 9th, 2011 at 5:46 pm

Hmn….not too sure about the ‘tweenpanel text here…Could be interpreted as Kidnapping…though not in this case of course, the child being abandoned by his parents and all…

  34. Elfguy
    April 9th, 2011 at 5:48 pm

…though shooing a Rhino like it’s a naughty puppy is a panel full of win.

Now they’ll just HAVE to get a kitty.

  36. xernella
    April 9th, 2011 at 9:14 pm

I notice Kelton said “like yours” instead of “like our” when telling how Emmon was treated by his parents. I don’t remember Kelton back story about his family

    Chasing rhino priceless
Emmon is five years old and already as large as a full grown man. Just how big is he going to get?

I will just say this: As an artist/puppeteer/storyteller, I love Liri’s face. The “She-Freak” morphs as well as the “V3″ morphs I chose for her seem to have almost randomly created a face that is uniquely sweet and expressive. Her big blue eyes give out more and more easily than most other V3-based characters I have ever made. Also, as I have said more than once, giants are naturally mild-tempered and resilient. So, despite the harshness of her upbringing and her history, Liri is still a very nice person and naturally expresses the best aspects of her personality front and center to anyone who is not actually throwing rocks or shooting arrows at her.

Yes, she did have a role model in her own mother and her aunts, when they were dealing with any children in the clan other than her. And yes, she has the bio clock ticking, irrespective of whether or not she has a century or two to take advantage of it, and whether or not she can even take advantage of it at all.

Are Liri and Keltan going to live happily ever after? No. Are they going to be killed horribly and pointlessly? No. Will they and Emmon have a significant role in the upcoming war, for good or bad? Absolutely. But for now, all three are going to give each other what all people deserve and owe to each other, which is love and understanding.

And that, frankly, is as good as it fucking ever gets.

  41. Thantoss
    April 10th, 2011 at 2:43 am

if it were the Ergonians it’d be an offence to the cha to do anything like what happened to Liri or Emmon, so yes tEmmon would still be at home and not have had such an experience

If I saw any1 doing something like that to a five year old I don’t care they’d get their ass’s beat( or I’d at least try) they got lucky with Kelton only saying something

and yes Emmon now will know how LOVING?CARING family is :)

  42. John
    April 10th, 2011 at 2:45 am

And as to the new tools, John Savard is quite correct to point out that I will, when appropriate, take advantage of them as often as I can. They definitely work, adn they save me some serious “ulcer-time!” They are not, by any means, perfect or applicable to all situations, but I am definitely pleased with Terradome so far. I will certainly continue to take advantage of it as often as I can!

  43. Thantoss
    April 10th, 2011 at 2:48 am

oh and yes Liri definatly wants to have a id and even if she has a kid she wouldn’t treat Emmon any less, unlike how some parents treat a step/half child (seen how my step father treats my little bro and sis compared to my half bro)

  44. JR
    April 10th, 2011 at 5:15 am

For now, ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’. Thanks for the feel good.

Darn those pesky lawn rhinos, always munching on the azaleas!

    April 11th, 2011 at 8:35 am

As the Dad of a six year old boy (who just had a birthday), this panel choked me up a bit (but in a good way).

  50. Lora
    April 11th, 2011 at 1:32 pm

Aw, Liri and Keltan has officially adopted Emmon. :) Great page, JED.

  51. hwyla
    April 11th, 2011 at 6:53 pm

What really tears me up about this page is Liri carrying Eammon. Poor little kid - can’t imagine the last time his mother was able to carry him. I’ll bet it was hard to do even as he first learned to walk - he’d be awfully heavy by then.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the poor boy has a bit of ‘hugs hunger’ - altho’ perhaps not - his mother seemed worried about him - hopefully she still gave him lots of hugs, even if she couldn’t pick him up and put him in her lap.

  52. TheCreeper
    April 11th, 2011 at 11:43 pm

There’s something endearing about Liri shooing a rhinoceros as though it were a pesky dog or a chicken or something.

But it’s good to see things are going to work out for Emmon.

I work with some of society’s “throwaway kids.” This made me smile. I wish it were always this easy and happy. Thank you.

The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof.
