I adore Keltan. He’s just such an awesome character!

Wow I am early for a change. I think the blacksmith needs to stop stinging Keltan with those pesky little arrows…soon.
BTW I have been rereading the whole comic from the beginning John, awesome work man. There simply has not been a single panel I have not enjoyed. AND I think I spotted something, something important.
    Zona’s Bracelets.
She specifically states they are enchanted to protect her and that she NEVER removes them. So her heart and mind would have been protected from Mentl’s magic. i.e. Their Love is the Totally Genuine Article (as we all us loyal readers knew all along…)
Am I the first to make this point? I didn’t go back and re-read all the posts.
Also could you re-post link of Mentl’s dream scene about Zona and Tula please? I can’t find it.
Thanks for everything John, Keep up the Amazing Work.

Yeah looks like Keltan’s gonna have to take the kid home, the dad wants nothing to do with him anymore. Very sad, but really, how many “modern” parents would handle something like this any better? Parents like their kids to be “normal”, whatever that may be at the time, and if that kid strays too far off the normal path, freakouts and worse tend to ensue from the parents’ end…

Professor61771: I believe that, since Mentl’s magic is so (a) powerful, and (b) unlike every other type of magic they know, they can’t be sure that Zona *was* protected. Whether they’re right is another question.

As for Keltan, I hope he resists the urge to break the blacksmith *too* badly, however much he is begging for pain right now. Beyond the aggravation of the already (unwarranted) reputation giants have, the kid really doesn’t need to see his father get pounded into chunky salsa, regardless of what an ass he’s being. I’m pretty sure Keltan *will* restrain himself, though.

Dilemma. Stomping this poor excuse for humanity may well harm the child, who still feels an attachment to his “family.” As much as we’d like him to, I don’t think Keltan will allow himself to do that. But he’ll have to scare them a lot, lest a stray arrow really hurt someone.

You know, I never noticed Keltan carrying that wicked nail-club thing before. o_O

Depressingly believable response from Gunnon, there. Stupid, with the arrows, but entirely believable.

I guess a suitable halfway mark would be just nabbing the roof from his house. i mean its not like he really needs it, those clouds don’t look like they’re threatening too much rain…

    there once was a blacksmith
    who threw out his son
for something he could not control
Now he is irratating the gental giant
who only tried to bring the son home
because the son still loves his dad
    soon the blacksmith will find
    that being irratating giants
can make ones shop fall down

yeah… pissing off a giant, Great plan. Some people just don’t get it, do they?
@TheMacnut parents want their kids to be special, as important to the world as they are to them. Any good parent, like Keltans dad, would love their child because of, or at the very least in spite of, this gift. Some people just can’t handle reality, eh?

ARE those actually arrows? Not that it’s any better, but I assumed they were hot coals.

JED - again I must say they new toys work quite well. The ‘dirt’ ground and the texture of the house look really great! As does the rest of the landscape.

@Hwyla: the smith is REALLY afraid ;op

I hope Keltan will do what we all want him to do: bring Emmon home… Keltan’s home, the only one where this child will be love and care for….

    Nice, very nice page JED….

    April 1st, 2011 at 10:40 am

Don’t make Keltan angry Master Gunnon, you wouldn’t like him when he’s angry.

  21. Someguy
    April 1st, 2011 at 11:00 am

… make me angry. Is of course the obvious end to the last line. Be careful keltan. I know they don’t seem like much but if you get one through the eye or one of them hits a big blood vessel close the the surface of the skin you would be badly hurt and I would be sad.

That compound sentence works right? Grammar isn’t really my strong suit.

  22. John Savard
    April 1st, 2011 at 2:26 pm

To me, from what we saw before in the origin story of Liri, I can well believe that Emmon’s father is not a bad person. The priests of Thrasu are the ones at fault - they know that having giants around would limit what they could get away with, and so they’ve incited the people to such a point that no one would dare to contradict the general belief that giants are some kind of demon. So if he didn’t cast his son out, in a week a mob would come to his house and burn it down with everyone in it.

A very wise man once came up with a term applicable to this kind of situation. I believe it was called Natural Selection

  25. Lora
    April 1st, 2011 at 6:23 pm

Aw, poor Emmon having to hear that. And Keltan’s just trying to reason with the father who won’t listen.

I wonder what Keltan will do to make the father stop. Pick him up and take the crossbow/whatever away from him? And maybe put him in a tree before leaving. ;)

  26. John Savard
    April 1st, 2011 at 8:58 pm

As I’ve said - if he had tried to defy the priests of Thrasu and keep Emmon, a mob would burn the whole house down with everyone in it. And if he were even to explain to Keltan that this was the reason, he would be killed for being disloyal and in league with demons. So it’s easier not to doubt, it’s easier to believe what the priests of Thrasu tell you when you don’t dare to defy them.

@Hwyla: A good archer can get off 12 in 30 seconds. A really good archer can fire 2 at the same time (though their aim will be a little off). But there’s another possibility: It might not be just Dad firing those arrows. It could also be Mom or other family members.

Squealing Sandry, you are evil. i got sucked into TVTropes for over 6 minutes. But I fought and I clawed and I clicked the little X-Close buttons, and I am alive and well and free of that insidious place!!

  29. Jean
    April 1st, 2011 at 10:20 pm

I suspect Keltan will simply grunt “Fine! …I am going to take your son home with me, and I am going to raise him to be a -good- man, as you should have done. He will be safe with me, and loved, because he is not a demon! Less of a demon than you.” …Or whatever words to that effect which JED might select of his own volition.

…Meanwhile, I’ll sit here and be tortured, waiting for the remaining pages of this scene to play themselves out. *sigh*

Wel, Rampage, I would agree that Daddy is filing his application for a Darwin Award here… (The Darwin Award is an award given (Posthumously) to the individual who did the human gene pool the biggest favor by removing themselves from it in the stupidist possible way during the last year.)

  32. kamatu
    April 2nd, 2011 at 10:19 am

Well, I saw the Keltan gains a son last time, but there you are.

On the subject of Zona’s bracelets and Mentl’s magic, I still say the entire situation is better explained by the problems with a certain female character living in an old tower that she managed to open for the first time since the great evil god was last active on this plane. It opens about the same time that said great evil god began to stir again on this plane. Hmmmm…..

Evil? Corrupted? No, not yet, but perhaps just a bit of taint. Surrounded by all that fine old stuff from the “good old days” when her people were on top of the world and worshipers of the great evil god. Then showing tendencies that would fit more in that older world than the current one, but everyone loves her, so they explain it away with “well, it’s just hard to be the queen”. Hmmm…

Okay, I feel better, dose of darkness delivered.

  33. Professor61771
    April 2nd, 2011 at 12:30 pm

Rampage@I love it! Elfguy@I am a Big Believer in the Darwin Award. You ever hear about the whole town that “earned” it? You know they don’t give it out anymore for idiots who climb into the lion’s cage? Happens too often they said.
Kamatu@ I don’t believe the queen has been negatively influenced by Mr. My Balls are on Fire, I think she is just being doing the job of Queen.

  34. John Savard
    April 2nd, 2011 at 2:20 pm

I’m not sure that Kamatu was referring to Ipola, though he may have been. Myself, I think that if anyone has been accidentally tainted by some corruption through a mistake in handling strong magical forces, Karna would be my first suspect. Her intentions are good - but she could have been manipulated into doing just what Shuach wanted.

  35. The Macnut
    April 2nd, 2011 at 7:01 pm

Could be Mentl’s exile was orchestrated by Shuach-but it could also be much like what’s happening with the giant kid in today’s comic, namely people (mostly Karna, but also Ipola) freaking out over something they don’t understand (Mentl’s power), and reacting in a way that makes things worse, mainly for the object of their fear.

  36. The Macnut
    April 2nd, 2011 at 7:04 pm

No, they didn’t call Mentl a “damned demon” and personally run him out of the Valley of the Moon on a rail, but for all intents and purposes that’s pretty much what happened.

  37. Jean
    April 3rd, 2011 at 1:28 am

Actually, Ipola and crew were willing to give Mentl a chance. But MENTL walked off to “deal with it”, and it was MENTL who decided to run back to Sanberdarnaroo. The crime of which Ipola & company were guilty of was in not being quick enough to reassure Mentl that they wanted to help him figure out how he MAY have enchanted Zona, and help him to correct the situation, AND get ahold of his powers a lot better. They didn’t cover that, and it’s clear from post-flight dialogue that they DID intend to cover that…but they didn’t get the chance to discuss it. They wanted to help him, but they just didn’t get the chance to get to offering that part–and getting that offer solidly into Mentl’s head, past all of his panic-attack thoughts.

So I will have to disagree with you, Macnut, I don’t think that “for all I ntents and purposes” that’s what they did to him. MENTL ran himself out of town, and therein lies the final difference.

  40. EmmaC

@Jean: old argument there. There is almost half the readers here that think that Ipola and co have drivent Mentl out of Erogenia and the other Half that think that Mentl is an imbecile to flee like that.

Perso: I think it was both: Ipola, Karna and co were afraid, for different matter one of them political. If you re-read you’ll see that Karna didn’t go all nice on Mentl, add this to the fact that Mentl never really believed in his chance with Zona and you have this situation.
The way they talk to him, at this precise moment, wasn’t suggesting anything about “teaching” him something.
I may add that Zona is in the half part that believe that it’s Ipola and co fault… ;o)
We know (because we read it and commentaries) that at least our good Old Serrin wanted to do just that.
Anyway, I think we will never end this arguments, thanks to the genius of JED which made us feel for those character… Thanks again to THE man!!! ;o)

I am really hoping that Keltan keeps a cool head on his shoulder and resists the temptation to turn Gunnon to MULCH.

Hmm. It’s as if he thought that his child is a result of a curse, or a punishment for sins.

    Poor Emmon. :(
But I gotta admire Keltan for speaking things through. Like a real man. ^^

  44. ICWT
    April 4th, 2011 at 8:50 am

Jean/EmmaC - I think Karna & Ipola are most guilty of parochialism, thinking Mentl would react to the concept like an Erogenian: “I shall prove myself, bring on your test and never question my honor again” instead of like a nice American J-Boy “I had my dream again where I’m making love, and the Olympic judges are watching. I’d nailed the compulsories, so this is it, the finals. I got a 9.8 from the Canadians, a perfect 10 from the Americans, and my mother, disguised as an East German judge, gave me a 5.6. Must have been the dismount.” - Harry, When Harry met Sally

If you’re ever going to watch Slayers anime, read the article above first. It could make Slayers Gorgeous whole lot funnier. The way dragon ARMY reacts to name of Lina Inverse…

I’m less inclined to believe Keltan will seriously injure Mr Smith, and more inclined to believe he’ll get irritated and just shoulder into the wall and knock the building over. :p

  49. kamatu
    April 6th, 2011 at 12:17 pm

Let me clarify, JED has said that Tula gave an adequate briefing to Ipola and Karna which they disregarded quite a bit in their confrontation with Mentl. Now that, in itself, including Mentl’s decision could have been passed off as a plot twist. Good intentions gone awry, just some paving stones on the path to hell.

The last panel of page 391 could be considered foreshadowing of the taint theory as after all their good intentions and good queenly type plans, suddenly Ipola feels the urge to drink and be left alone. Guilt and depression because she knows she has done evil?

One thing we don’t know is the cause of the page 394-395 sequence with the book, especially frame 2 of page 395. Mentl’s anguish activating the book, some mystical reason or maybe the tower (which they must be in for the sequence to make sense) having a bit of influence. I can think of lots of things that would fit the “I love Ipola and she just made a little queenly oopsie” interpretation and the “Mummie Dearest is tainted and the taint is what triggered this incident” interpretation and several in between those two. I stop at only tainted because I give Ipola lots of credit for strength of will and magical prowess, so even if I’m right and she is being corrupted, it must be very slowly and very gently so Ipola doesn’t notice it, let alone her advisors, who might also be tainted by the same source, although from the evidence, I’d say it was Karna only.

The sequence that starts at page 397 is brutal and has the “good queen Ipola” loyalists scrambling for excuses. Is Zona’s comment in the last frame of page 400 prophetic or simply anger? Is Ipola’s comment in the second frame of page 403 suggestive? “Not like other people”, “So Erogenian”. So, Ipola & family are special, in a special way and unlike the rest of the Erogenians, they are not supposed to be Erogenian? Oh, queen thing again.

Frame 3 of page 404 is interesting, because it it the justification for the actions of a “good queen being queenly”, but by some of the later strips, that justification is (or is going to be) shot because it is an open secret. Well, maybe not if Ipola is seen as ruthless enough to drive off the vile enchanter her daughter is in love with, but how does that reconcile with the cha? Use of others would be characteristic of a culture like the former Erogenian one, no longer subscribed to supposedly.

Finally we come to the clincher, the self justifying and extremely manipulative (on several levels) concluding speech on frame 1 of page 405. Hammered down tight by the next sequence of face shot frames.

That is when “Queenie Dearest” comes forth in full flower with an open and overt subjugation of Zona, her life and her freedom to act by Queen Ipola. “Oh how reasonable” from the it’s-hard-to-be-the-queen crowd. It also fits in with a mindset closer to the older Erogenian culture.

No taint? No whispers of “Ipola, you are the only one who can save Erogenia from dying of being Erogenian.” “Ipola, you must be strong, you must do things others cannot, you are special.” “Ipola, you can do things that the ignorant around you would say is not right because you are their savior” “Ipola, it is all up to you, everything you do is right, because you are the savior of Erogenia”.

Then there is the prophecy given by the Erogenian’s former deity on page 289. How did he know? Deity level magic? Or that he had an influence where nobody suspects that he knew he could use? Was that influence part of what caused the original incident over sharing between Ipola and Zona, to weaken the Erogenians?

Who knows besides JED? As the comment was made, this is a sign of how much the fans of Zona can get caught up in the story JED is telling and one reason why I hope JED stays on the sidelines on these. I might be right or I might be wrong or it might be something in between, but I trust JED to bring the story off.

Ignoring all the social akwardness of the bigot afraid of his own son etc, they need to recruit that damned smith as an archery captain in the royal army or something. The man is achieving rapid fire with a freaking bow.
