If ever there was a man more in need of a hug and a mug of cocoa…
September 4th, 2010 at 4:48 am
OOOkay Vito, If there was ever a time for you to do the Ben Kenobi thing…NOW WOULD BE THAT TIME
September 4th, 2010 at 5:06 am
Good, let him rant and rave for a bit. the best chance for a positive outcome is to let those around him know what he is feeling and going through. Let none doubt that his feelings for Zona are genuine and his concerns about making her tell a lie are also equally important for all to understand. All meaning the immediate “royal” family.
I still say I have seen nothing to make me believe Mentl’s magic caused Zona to fall in love with him. His magic simply does not work that way, not without intent.
September 4th, 2010 at 5:56 am
If not Vito, I’m betting Yatta-ta is going to hear him, and hopefully try to talk him down…but yes, it’s good that he’s letting it all out, that he’s venting, instead of bottling it up, and letting it fester like poison. I still believe he’ll come to find that she’ll love him, even without the spells.
September 4th, 2010 at 5:57 am
Calisto: “not without intent”?
I’m not so sure. See http://www.soulgeek.com/comics/zona/2006/11/30/page-83/ and the next two pages. There was no visible intent for what happened
September 4th, 2010 at 6:09 am
I think your missing the situation here. The last thing I can picture him doing is sitting around moping in the bedroom they shared until someone gives him a hug and a pat on the head to make it all better. He get away from her, if only to end the situation for her sake. Take him and Yatta-ta on the road - and maybe let the girls find him after enough time has past and he’ll believe its because she wants him. This isnt a situation that calls for a quick fix.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:29 am
No no! Not the guitar!
September 4th, 2010 at 6:41 am
I agree—god, not the guitar. Break the mirror, break the walls, burn the damn house down, but save the guitar—if, of course, it holds tuning well and sounds sweet.
Again, someone better get in there soon, because once Mentl does break the guitar, something really bad is going to happen. You don’t seriously think Pete Townsend’s hearing got screwed up just because the music was too loud, do you?
Also, of course, there’s the fact he’s going to find a hole and pull it in after him. And, thanks to that magick he’s kvetching about, Mentl can actually *do* it.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:41 am
Poor guy…
Laz: Well, IMHO it’s sort of fitting that a rock star (which Mentl tecnically is in this reality
) should smash his instrument, but it should be done at the end of a great performance, not alone in despair…
September 4th, 2010 at 6:43 am
Woops, just realized it’s too late—bad juju, man. Extremely bad.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:53 am
That’s not his guitar is it? I think it’s the lute, and that’s maybe worse! Oh, poor Mentl!
September 4th, 2010 at 7:02 am
With that kind of rage going he’s likely to hurt anyone who comes into the room. Which would jsut make things worse. He needs to burn the anger out before anyone comes near him or he’s going to end up even deeper in despair.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:26 am
wooooooooooooooooooow
September 4th, 2010 at 7:42 am
You know, when Zona learns about this, she is not going to be happy.
And neither will Tula be, I’m thinking.
September 4th, 2010 at 8:56 am
Yeah, kinda saw this one coming, though I honestly didn’t think he’d make it back to his room it happened, so props to Mentl for that I guess. But yeah, time for some epic breakdown rage. This won’t end well.
September 4th, 2010 at 10:32 am
…for it is only in a crucible can the metal, when the dross be pulled away, become more pure, more beautiful…
Time to see the heat turned up.
September 4th, 2010 at 11:29 am
This is the second time we’ve seen Mentl go, well, mental. I have every confidence he’ll pull through it and come out stronger in the end.
September 4th, 2010 at 11:48 am
OH yeah, the Pete Townshend smash-the-guitar move! I love it, I love it, I love it!
This is a great comic. I know I make critical comments sometimes, but that’s just me being a smartass shit-disturber. I love this this comic! Nothing but DGN could possibly compare
September 4th, 2010 at 12:09 pm
hey cha is like there mystical karma right? and zona’s sister said she never seen two people who’s cha’s where so right for each other i don’t think any amount of magick in that world has the power to change the flow of cha right?
September 4th, 2010 at 1:15 pm
I think he’s taking it on the road. Does Yatta-ta join him? Doubt it, but maybe.
Who finds him? Zona? I would bet on Tula
September 4th, 2010 at 1:28 pm
Ok, this is where I’m now wishing for the fairy tale end of this part of the story… (good fairy tale, not grimm bros)
September 4th, 2010 at 2:01 pm
I reread the archive a bit and was very distressed to discover that while Tula says “she has never seen to people whose cha is so balanced,” she also, once she found out Mentl did magic, had been saying, “They seem so happy with each other. I wish I knew…” or “If only I was certain…” And so, no, I do think it is impossible for cha balancing to be effected by magic. It seems magic may be capable of making someone feel in love, and if the other person is in love, that is enough for the cha.
Either way. Zona loves him, even without the enchantment. I think we have had ample evidence of that. He and Yatta-ta are going on a road trip. I think He need one. And how is he supposed to sing, “If you love someone, set them free” without his lute?
September 4th, 2010 at 2:11 pm
Sing O’ Muses of the rage of Achilles….
September 4th, 2010 at 2:23 pm
My heart goes with Mentl… His lack of selfesteem is going to be stronger than before…
I see him trying to get away as discreetly as possible, without telling Zona, and without telling anyone where he’s going… And Yatta-ta following him at distance? Why not…
We shall see.
September 4th, 2010 at 4:45 pm
I’d say he’s taking this rather well… The ad at the bottom of the page is for “Suicide.org” - prevention, awareness and support. Coincidence? Perhaps, and perhaps not…
Does Mentl know any death metal? You know, the kind of song that says “I hate the whole F’ing world! And I’m so F’ing stupid! F’ you!”
I really don’t see Mentl coming out of this very well. He’s destroyed the only person he’s ever really loved (turned her into his zombie love slave), and screwed up her entire tribe.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:03 pm
Omg, that’s scary! My inner voice says he’ll take some time before singing again…
If Zona is around, I bet she’ll never forget that noise he’s making in her whole life… I so wonder how she’ll react…
September 4th, 2010 at 11:14 pm
In the cave where he crisped the little monsters, Mentl didn’t need the lute to do major magick. Good, because I think that the lute will soon be splinters.
September 4th, 2010 at 11:38 pm
… one… zero. Cue the BSOD!
September 4th, 2010 at 11:49 pm
Heh, for a second there I thought he pulled the lute out of the mirror. Boy needs to be careful though, there’s a plethora of metal songs with “All a fucking lie” in the lyrics. XD
September 5th, 2010 at 12:20 am
God, I need a drink after this for some reason. Nicely done Jed this arc looks to be something that can grasp anyone in the heart.
September 5th, 2010 at 12:21 am
Are we all forgetting what Shuach said???
http://www.soulgeek.com/comics/zona/2009/07/10/page-289/
“In time he will be in a place where we can best exert our power, away from the moon priestess and her tribe. Then we will deal properly with him.
I think he’s headed away before anyone realizes he’s gone. Then again, it just might be my ‘Uncle Jack and coke’ talking.
Great page as always JED. Keep ‘em coming!
September 5th, 2010 at 2:20 am
Gee, that’s a familiar feeling…
He needs this. Let him go, let him rant, and let him disappear for awhile. Right now, he’s gonna feel like everything that he thought he gained was a joke, and a lie. He needs to go, and spend some time alone, and re-establish himself and his self-esteem.
September 5th, 2010 at 5:23 am
@Karyl We who love our stringed companions perhaps a tad more than we should know that the lute is but the great grandmother of the Gibson SG Special that will be. When she hurts, we all hurt.
Midnightwold, from what I’ve been able to glean about Mentl and his confidence in himself, if he’s let to go find some alone time right now, he won’t be coming back. Micheal needs someone to remind him of all the non-magical good he’s done, that he is a worthy person, and what, exactly, ‘not sure’ really means. *Then* he can go contemplate—not before.
September 5th, 2010 at 1:15 pm
@AdamZero - ouch! BAD precedent!
September 5th, 2010 at 1:26 pm
@ICWT Nah, Achilles was the opposite of Mentl, he had too little self-doubt and too much ego. Achilles was all about pride and seeking after glory. And he went apeshit after Hector killed his boyfriend Patroclus.
September 5th, 2010 at 2:52 pm
Aannd the lute is done for. Next panel will show Mentl breaking it clean in two (or more) pieces.
September 5th, 2010 at 4:40 pm
have to disagree, not a time for Vito, it’s a time for Tula
September 5th, 2010 at 6:51 pm
I’m with Raoul, if he manages to quietly sneak out of the palace and the valley before anyone can stop him, he’s gone for good. Or at least until Tula & Zona find him and bring him back (and you KNOW Zona’s gonna go after her man).
My bet though, is that Zona’s gonna hear him yelling and cussin’ and tearing up the room, will come in and go “WTF Mentl???”. And then after dragging the story out of him, and probably his conclusion that he needs to leave “for her own good”, that’s when you’ll hear some REAL yellin’ and cussin’. From Zona, to her mother. May the goddess help Ipola then, ’cause boy will she need it.
September 5th, 2010 at 7:46 pm
Any one notice the lump in the bed in panel 4 of the last page? We only see a part of the bed now. What if Zona’s sitting there letting him vent and she catches the lute before it is destroyed for good?
Just a thought. Either way, it’s gonna take Zona or Tula to talk him down or he’s gone for the hills where Shuach will surely be waiting. And don’t call me Shirley.
September 5th, 2010 at 7:58 pm
I can’t imagine Zona just letting him rant like that, especially about having “made her lie”. She’s definitely going to want to know WTF is THAT about, among other things. No, she’s not in the room right now, probably freshening up in the powder room or something. Hopefully she’s close enough to hear Mentl ranting and breaking things, and will come running-guess we’ll find out Tuesday…
September 5th, 2010 at 9:01 pm
Whooaaa.
I like the triangular “action panel” which is sort of the 6th panel. Makes the large panel work somehow.
Moox
September 5th, 2010 at 10:49 pm
@Lebbrin check above comments that’s just the cushions and the covers pushed to the end of the bed.
September 5th, 2010 at 11:45 pm
Swordsmanship training from Yatta on the road? Sounds good to me. Wouldn’t hurt to get the basics down. Plenty of “travel songs” Mentl could sing to get down the road without being spotted.
Especially after the fury, with the hormones purged and the brain clicking in overdrive on how to fix things, in this case by getting away from Zona.
September 5th, 2010 at 11:57 pm
But if he does try to fix things, good chance it would wind up being like time travel stories where the first bad outcome was the best outcome cause everything attempt to fix things makes it all worse, especially since we’re seeing here how magic isn’t always helpful.
September 6th, 2010 at 1:59 am
well boys and girls , its truly hit the fan now
September 6th, 2010 at 3:13 am
@Kamatu I’m trying to picture Mentl and Yatta as Bing and Bob now.* The terrifying thing is, in a way, it works. Mentl’d never believe he was the ’smooth one,’ though.
*Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in one of their many ‘Road’ flicks, for those of you not born in the Mesozoic.
September 6th, 2010 at 7:11 am
He didn’t make her lie, he made her A lie. Big difference there. “Making her lie” means he forced her to say something she knew to be untrue. “Making her A lie” means that even though she thinks her love is true, she only feels that way via magic. That’s what Mentl believes right now and it’s to his credit that he’s in despair about it.
September 6th, 2010 at 9:57 am
Ah, nice. Self pity/tantrum party in full swing. At least it´s better than a girly crying jag.
*grabs popcorn
Some people are WAY over analyzing these pages here. Just wait for the next page before you see Zona chopping his head of or Mentl getting lost in the woods and starving to death.
September 6th, 2010 at 10:45 am
I certainly don’t know what is going to happen next. I’m hoping for Zona to take her sister with her to discuss this with her mother. Except that Zona might well be too furious to trust herself in her mother’s presence. But I suspect that things are going to get worse before they get better.
September 6th, 2010 at 11:02 am
i have said it before i will say it again PSYCOBILLY freakout time
September 6th, 2010 at 11:03 am
and i cant spell 4 my life today
September 6th, 2010 at 11:25 am
@Raoul you and others keep saying Mentl and Yatta will leave together, but what possible motivation does Yatta-ta have to leave the Valley of the Moon? He’s been welcomed into the Valley and is having the time of his life, including free and easy sex (I’ll bet there’s a line of fine Erogenian lasses waiting to see if they can wear him out). I’m not sure Mentl’s troubles would be enough to get him to leave all that behind. Sure wouldn’t get ME to budge, that’s for sure.
September 6th, 2010 at 3:34 pm
@hans
I totally agree on the over-analyzing thing. People go crazy with that.
As far as the “starving in the woods” thing, I was thinking more like raped by bears…
September 6th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
Basically, while I would like to see Zona getting Tula to speak for her before Ipola to clarify the misunderstanding - and for Vito to have a little talk with Karna, I know that isn’t what’s going to happen. Instead, it is likely that Mentl will do something stupid, and need to be rescued and otherwise complicate the plot.
It’s sad that Karna has no way to know she is unintentionally doing Shuach’s work for him.
September 6th, 2010 at 11:48 pm
I think it’s safe to say that, barring a miracle, the lute that Zona gave Mentl on page 16 will not be giving out any more notes. We mourn its passing as collateral damage of the path which true love goes down which is, proverbially, not smooth.
This is, indeed, a turning point, and I would be giving too much away if I even hinted at the direction we’ll be turning in. One thing I have said is that I don’t like easy answers or pat, Disney-type solutions. There will be none. I also strongly dislike twisting a story in twain illogically, or dropping an anvil or a nuke at the last minute to be self-consciously ironic or to be cruel to the reader. Not cool, IMHO. I will say that, with one slight exception and some interesting and logical character introductions, everything that is necessary for carrying this issue to its conclusion has already been hinted at, introduced or stated outright by the characters themselves. I do not promise that everyone will behave well, calmly or reasonably in all circumstances. If I did that, as I said to my brother the other day, this would be one of the really boring episodes of TNG instead of a melodramatic soap opera set in a fantasy world. In other words, one of the stories I hate, rather than me trying to write a story in the mold of those I like. Thankfully, based on your remarks and continued interest, it seems I’m not the only one who feels that way.
So if you’ll have a bit of faith in your humble amateur storyteller, I promise to keep this going until it reaches at least one or possibly more satisfying conclusions. Happy conclusions? No, I don’t promise that. But satisfying, yes I do promise. Not all satisfying endings are happy, though many are.
“Willow” is still one of my favorite little fantasy films, after all. Mad Martigan provides at least a little of the inspiration for Yatta-Ta.
