I don't know why, but I had Mentl pegged as jewish for ages. I think based on his looks - mostly the combo of his nose, hair and BLUE eyes. Blue eyes mix with black hair mostly in the welsh or the jews.

I love bringing his own culture into this picture - helps to really round out his character and influences!

@Joe, Ya Know, I have other boards I do that kind of parsing on....

Yep, you do have to watch the implications of that kind of stuff, but some of the Eastern philosophies do seem to grasp the concepts taught in the Bible (in either Testament). We might quibble about, but the concept of "every knee will bow" could fit in there.

You are absolutely correct on one thing, the Creator doesn't need us, we need the Creator. Since the relationship is defined more as parent-child (or sovereign-subject), the reason why we are to do as asked is because the One in authority over us told us to.

Disclaimer: Yes, I'm Christian, but I'm trying to be neutral since this isn't where I do my parsing.

Jean, as this is a few days after teh full moon night I think the subjects of Shauch, giants, Mentl's role in the rescue of Zona, etc have all come up. (Maybe even Maldik if the letter's gotten there by now. Or maybe that's the next shoe to drop onto Ipola's lap.

Yaaay, zomg, internet access! (Not that Australia doesn't have it, but this is the first morning I haven't been dragged all over this beautiful country, down here in the Melbourne area...)

To comment on the previous page, Yonder Priestess hasn't encountered what Tola has encountered. Remember Tula and the vote incentive regarding the two giants? How they usually show up when Some Major Shhh is about to go down? I see Mentl's presence in this world as a way to -counter- Shuach's attempted return. After all, Prince Dumbshhh would still have made his devil's bargain wi th the Urtts even if Mentl hadn't shown up...and most likely Zona would've died when the Urtts attacked in the frying pan incident, or duing the escape from the underground dungeon...both situations in which Mentl saved their bacon. (pun intended, lol) Without Mentl, Zona would be gone, and Erogenia wouldn't have its greatest champion. Without the two of them, Tula might've fallen into the Urtts' trap anyway, and their strongest young priestess would also have been lost, paving the way nice and level for Shuach to waltz into town. But the top 3 of the Moon Tribe don't really know these things, so yeah, they're going to possibly see Mentl's presence as a threat or a problem.

Me, I think he's the solution. Even Shuach is wary of what Mentl represents....muahaha vey.

...They're dragging me off again in an hour, I'd better read the rest of my favorite webcomics as fast as I can.... >.>

If memory serves from my studies of Ye Olde Testament, Levis were the priests of Judaism, correct? So it's appropriate for Mentl to be an enchanter because he's a Levite? Interesting....

@Joe: What's in a name? Would a claymore by any other designation strike as deeply? (Considering the hands that swing it are the same in either case.

"There, it has to do with bringing the whole world to pray to the same deity instead of practicing idolatry etc. Very interesting in this story, in the context of Shuach versus the moon goddess."

Since this is Judaism, there are a number of different ways the prayer "and on that day the Lord will be one, and his name one" is seen.

What's widely agreed among Jews (but you'll never get 100% on, well, much of anything) is that this does *not* say everyone will be Jewish. Or, as is much more frequently cited, Christianity, since it's generally an added interpretation by Christian theologians.

I'll add that while the context of the Jewish Aleinu prayer implies universal prayer, it doesn't state it. There's a strong school of thought that says this phrase is more about the simple recognition of that which already is: that G-d is G-d, and that the various attributes people honor are all part of One Thing (in the full Zen One Taste sense).

The full implications of that are unlikely to be comfortable for many people, of all religions. It would break a lot of cherished mental furniture, not least among many people who thought that was what they were already doing.

In healing the world, the truth will set you free, in the end. But first, it's probably going to piss you off. Ask Ippola.

As for prayer, universal prayer to the One G-d of creation would follow from that recognition - but Judaism is not a "justification by faith alone" religion, and G-d is complete so does not need our prayers. It's just batting/fielding practice; necessary, but not why the baseball team exists.

Michael "Mentl" Levy may not be very religiously Jewish, but he knows why the baseball team exists. And therein lies the saving grace for many.

Moses was a Levite, Israel's tribe pledged to divine service (the kohanim priests/ "Cohens" are a subset). And the other part of Michael "Mentl" Levy's real (true?) name is derived from the archangel Michael, THE warrior angel. Shuach is in big trouble...

And Mentl, if you end up having to part the sea to get an Erogenian army out of trouble, just remember to ask for directions afterward.
