Oh man, the priest/shaman/druid’s (he really wasn’t very specific, and I think all three apply) line is hilarious. “Hells, it affected me, and I don’t even play that way!”

I love Ipola’s hair! Oh and I might lose track in the next three weeks. :(. But the cause is because I’m getting married!

Uh oh, here comes the hard discussion about Mentl’s abilities and their effects. And from the looks of things, the Queen may even have to…excuse herself from the discussion.

PS-In terms of Miss Mercedes Lackey, his Gift is WIDE OPEN. There is no filter, no nothing-it’s spewing out to everyone. It gets more controlled, per se, but he doesn’t know how to control it to a finer degree, and it gets powerful as he uses it. So it’s either: learn it as best he can until now and have everyone effected in a long term way, or not use it and just have it there. Wow.

And the problem is, the only way for him NOT to use it is to stop singing (which I suspect for Mentl may be like asking him to stop breathing), and even then the power may come out in other ways. Yeah, he’s screwed unless he gets some serious tutelage for his abilities starting like, yesterday.

One has to remember that it probably takes a *lot* to make the Queen blush at all — never mind nearly catch on fire like that. Mentl, you’re a dangerous man. I’m especially interested in what the old Priestess will say (she got a good close “look” at Mentl while he was totally concentrated on Zona the day before).

I feel trepidation on the part of Mentl and the plot and his relationship with Zona, and yet I’m feeling anticipation and eagerness, too, to see what will happen next.

I’m with you Garou. I think this is gonna go badly in terms of Mentl’s sense of self worth.
“So I cast a freaking spell on Zona and THAT’S why she loves me?!!?” Cue Mentl breakdown. (that was punny, I love it)

This is the part of the story I have been waiting for since I first started reading this comic. I have been curious to see what would happen when Mentl put it together that Zona might, just might have been encouraged to love him because of his music. I still don’t believe that btw, after all no one else has been forced or even encouraged to love Mentl after experiencing his music. Lust is a poor substitute for love. Mentl can start to come to terms with his leaking magic and hopefully finally learning some level of control. I can’t wait to see him start to realize his potential, we have seen the raw energy he can use, just imagine all that power used in a way that is refined. I can see him behind an army of Erogenians singing “If you want blood” by AC/DC… scary amounts of power!

Yep, I’m with Garou and Dromin, I think the implications of this talk are going to cause Mentl to seriously doubt Zona’s love for him. What he did to Ginsha is going to come crashing into the forefront of his mind, and he’ll jump to the conclusion that he put a “love whammy” on Zona.
After all, how else could a warrior princess like her love the loser he probably still thinks he is, deep down? Cue collapsing self-esteem indeed.

I smell rampant magic, plus something that might drive a wedge between Mentl and Zona, just because Mentl fears that their relationship is forced by his magic. Of course this is not the whole truth, it merely worked as a catalyst, but still, Mentl is a decent a guy, just the idea that their romance isn’t natural could really put him off.
I’m not saying this because I want to see a break up, but it’s something that can lead to character development as both parties do some soulsearching.
Ps. Zona is too grounded in the mortal realm as Vito would say, I doubt the magic really got her, she just never experienced that kind of music and lyrics before so that would be what reeled her in…

I agree with JustMe; Zona may have initially come for the music, but she stayed for everything else.
Now, if this were a movie, it would be the point at which I groan and wonder what manner of contrivance would be used to push the two of them apart so they can get back together inside of five minutes (Gawd, I hate romantic comedies). Fortunately, I trust JE completely at this point, so I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.

I don’t think Mentl will suffer anguish–rather I think he will vigorously defend his own appropriate conduct but in an artful way. I do think he’s going to be asked to help them deal with a common enemy problem.

When in danger or in doubt, fall back on Heinlein:
“When the happiness of another person becomes as essential to yourself as your own, then the state of love exists.” Tula has already judged Mentl’s intent and not found it lacking. So, I have no worries about Z & M’s bond. *none*. not that John won’t make this entertaining as all hell. *cackles*.

Yeah I think a lot of us have been waiting for this since Tula spelled out that Mentl can do the magic whammy and the ensuing insecurity I can really picture it in my mind his reaction in great detail I will be waiting with bated breath for the next page.

@Elfguy That wouldn’t work. remember what Vito said, an enchanter learns his spells untill they are a part of him. Mentl learned the songs from when he was a child, he knows their lyrics, he knows what they feel like, he knows their “intent”. Just changing a word wont change the intent that the song has.

i think it will be Tula who saves him. She saw him hit a full grown urtt with a frying pan to save Zona; she knows their love is genuine now even if it began with an unintended spell.

Won’t be saying too much today, other than you will have to wait until Saturday morning/afternoon for this update. Last weekend pushed my whole schedule back, but you shouldn’t feel cheated, I hope to update a Hot Stuff pinup at that time, as well.
A couple of things: Yes, Ipola nearly went down the rabbit hole and pulled herself back. She’s embarrassed on several levels. Mentl is still clueless, but that is about to change.
And her Majesty’s urttskin ensemble was so successful I had to make a separate pinup in the gallery. And yes, these were enemies that she killed herself in battle. Their skulls adorn a couple of key public places, and their hides were split and dyed and made into adornments for her (literally) killer bod.
And to Mish_Lady from all of Erogenia, Gen amanhari cha!

I’m part of the ‘Zona isn’t under a love spell’ camp, and I think I know why. The spells that Mentl sings do seem to be temporary. After all, his songs to this point have been temporary, right? Otherwise he’d have a horde of Kivalian noblewomen following after him. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if Zona didn’t get enchanted in the first place, either. As Vito said, Zona’s so grounded in the physical it’s not even funny. Subtle magics like that might just pass right by her.
Plus, when she asked if Mentl had ever lied to her, Zona said he wouldn’t be her boyfriend anymore if he had. I don’t think you can do that while under the effects of a long-lasting love spell.

KL, it’s not Mentl whose emotions are the trouble here. Mentl, we know, loves her truly; he hasn’t enchanted himself. It’s ZONA whose emotions may have been altered or tampered with, thanks to his inadvertently enchanting music.

@kl: Odd that Tula doesn’t already appear present. Ipola’s no slouch in the wisdom department, but she might not be clear-headed enough right now to use it effectively. Or maybe Tula will be called for when Mentl goes into his meltdown.

Mentll needs to learn, in a HUGE way how to control his power. After much ‘gnashing-of-teeth’ that’s about to ensue, what better place could he be to get the guidance he needs. So even with Tula’s best efforts (that WILL have huge effect), I’ll bet Zona has the FINAL say that exonerates Mentl. But, what do I know. I wait patiently (or not!) for the next twist no one considers. Thanks, JED.

How fast is his power level going up? They may be wondering about this guy, should we be sure to recruit him for our side - or get rid of him while we still CAN? He nearly accidentally overwhelmed Tula even before, and they consider HER strong. And he is getting stronger. And face it, even Zona can’t stand up to a Great Balls of Fire spell….

@Elfguy, I Guess that’s a possibility, after all, Great Balls of Fire doesn’t litteraly mean great balls of fire. But the strength in the pronunciation of the line creates an image, and Mentl had to “charge up” the effect by singing the lines before it, just as in the Shotgun song he only gave powerbursts at the pronunciations of Shotgun(correct me if I’m mistaken about this). The songs aren’t written with the intent that Mentl uses them for, but they create a mental image that makes them usable for an intended purpose.
Just singing one word different wont change the feelings and images you have with a song not if the original words still remain in your head.
But we can possibly argue untill the end of days about this, so let’s agree to disagree and let JED work his own magic to resolve things.
