    That is all.

Oh, thank BOG they decided to face the question squarely, and FINISH the silly little issue!

And the use of a third set of rules is a NICE touch, keeping either from grousing about the rules of the other player’s home.

Also, it sounds like Tethik was the one to step forward (as it were) and name the ruleset, showing that he can be both decisive and commanding without stomping on Tor’s toes. The invitation followed from that immediately, I suspect

I kinda see Tor as Brian Blessed, playing King Vultan of the Hawkmen in the Dino Delaurentis Flash Gordon. There was a role that DEMANDED that the actor chew the scenery, and with his booming voice, and robust delivery, Brian Blessed just screams to be cast as a barbarian king.

Hmm, at least someone had the balls to ask straight up about the rules before things went too much further. Now the question can be settled properly.

Cha balancing over a game. Oy vey, way to bring our enlightened “barbarian” hosts down to earth, JED. And you managed to do it without making Tor look like too much of a prick. Very clever of you keeping silent over the past couple of pages, by the way.

Or did you just not have the time to post? ;)

Aww, but now how will they settle their differences with dance?

Clearly they must have another fight!

@Lictre Ah well, who wants to live forever? Ha! Ha! Ha! DIVE!!!
I… may have loved that movie growing up.

@JED Beautiful page. Love the kids playing with the huge cat. :D

Oops, shoulda checked last page’s comments before I posted the last bit about JED. Oh well, mea culpa.

    August 6th, 2010 at 4:33 am

    Finally some closure.
Hopefully we will see who wins.
    Knowing JED, we wont.
Ahhh, don’t you just love cliffhangers

  9. VGA Ubersoldat
    August 6th, 2010 at 4:37 am

Awesome. I see these two become fast friends, if they weren’t before.

  10. Addup2
    August 6th, 2010 at 4:43 am

@VGA Ubersoldat I think they were friends before - otherwise there wouldn’t have been so much upset over a game from five years before.

  11. Lora
    August 6th, 2010 at 4:53 am

He he he. Well, that’s the easy way to do things. Tor was dragging the decision out, so Tethik decided. :P Now the game can go on.

Hmm, does this mean we are getting back to Zona, Mentl, Tula, and the rest of the Moon Tribe? I’ve started to miss them.

  12. Lora
    August 6th, 2010 at 5:01 am

Oh, just a second question. What is the ‘TAK!’ about? Sound effect or what? It’s confusing to me, because I read it as ‘thank you!’. ;)

  13. Jean
    August 6th, 2010 at 5:04 am

It’s the sound effect of Tethik slamming down the first piece to be moved, since he goes first, as was just so recently arranged.

  14. AdamZero
    August 6th, 2010 at 5:07 am

    Ahahahaaaaaa

seems I was wrong. Ah well.

At least they avoided the whole problem again.

  15. Jean
    August 6th, 2010 at 5:07 am

    Wow… I just…

…I just realized I was waiting with more eager anticipation for tonight’s Zona update as I was for the Girl Genius update!

    @.@

  16. Jean

*er, than I was, not as I was

    @jean why how were you?

  18. Aust
    August 6th, 2010 at 6:34 am

“I don’t see what there is to be upset about…”

    *headdesk*

    PFFFAHAHAHHAAAHAAHAHA!!!

  19. Wookie
    August 6th, 2010 at 7:09 am

I think these two are about as close to “perfect friends” as you get. If they don’t resolve things, they’ll simply kill each other! :) I might be a bit careful drinking that wine in any case….

  20. Uhl
    August 6th, 2010 at 7:29 am

Erogenians don’t kill you by poisoning your wine. That’s too close to lying. They’ll come at you with an axe. (from the front or back usually depends on the mood, but an axe and a warcry nonetheless.)

  21. Kamatu
    August 6th, 2010 at 7:56 am

I think he meant overindulging in the wine. Of course, that might not be too bad in some ways with a king with only a nephew and niece for known family.

  22. The Old Hack
    August 6th, 2010 at 8:23 am

Thanks a lot, Uhl. Now I have a mental image of an Erogenian trying subtlety as practiced by the Jägers of Girl Genius by serving a cup of wine with an axe in it. >.<

  23. Dromin
    August 6th, 2010 at 9:28 am

Hack, that’s awesome. lol. I love both G. Genius and Zona here. Jagers are about the funniest set of characters I’ve ever seen in a comic.

Nice update, by the way. Love panel five and the way the two burly guards are smirking. Hehe.

  24. Sleepinin
    August 6th, 2010 at 9:51 am

@TheOldHack “OI! I iz not done mit tryink de sottle!” He did eventually get that hat, y’know…

@everyone else. Did anybody else notice Those Two Guys standing outside the door exchanging smirks? I theenk they’ve seen this kind of thing before ^w^

  25. Hwyla
    August 6th, 2010 at 10:14 am

I especially love that they got into this mess by trying to be polite - Tethik of Dell playing erogenian rules and Tor playing Dellian.

So THIS time. Tethik is still a bit angry - and chooses the rules from HIS own home. After which, Tor FINALLY asks for some wine to be brought for Tethik (courtesy)

I think Tor prefers Tethik to be a bit less polite. And interestingly, Tor was most upset over thinking Tethik thought him impolite in the first place - so then he really DOES become impolite? (no courtesy) and is angered more over Tethik’s apology?

Lastly, Tor only becomes polite again after Tethik chooses Delian rules (apparently impolite by courtesy)

I’d say the ‘Bull’ prefers to stay out of ‘China Shops’ (courteous situations) except when he can feel he is the most courteous one there.

  26. Zogzog
    August 6th, 2010 at 10:44 am

    2nd panel : Etearia (King Tor’s niece)
5th panel : sentry on the left (the closest one to us)

Their expressions made my day ^^ I love how they silently laugh at Tor and Tethik. ^^

  27. Stig Hemmer
    August 6th, 2010 at 11:16 am

Actually, I think Tethik chose Dellan rules to be polite. Dellan rules were Tors choice after all…

  28. JEDraft
    August 6th, 2010 at 12:56 pm

    Moox - What? Something funny?

Lictre - No, there was no third set. He simply became exasperated and went with what Tor obviously wanted to do in the first place. John Rhys-Davies was my first choice, but BLessed would not suck at all. As the hawk king, he was definitely fun. Wotta stoopid movie, but fun. I think I should have some friends over and do an MST3K night on that film.

The MacNut - Well, it was a case of “oh, no - we’re not going through all THAT bullshit again!” And yes, I did post yesterday. Don’t always get back to the comic on time.

Ted - Whenever I can, I try to add little real-life details. I imagine a village as the sun is setting, and the king’s hall, while important and guarded, isn’t sacred or unapproachable. You have kids with the family cat, and a horseman trotting by and a couple sharing a walk.

Gremalkin - We’re changing scenes, so no. You will not see who wins. :)

VGA Ubersoldat - They have been very good friends for over 20 years. the last five years were just kind of stupid, and both of them are relieved to be civil again. People. Whatcha gonna do?

    Addup2 - Correct!

Lora - We are, indeed, returning to the Valley Of The Moon on Tuesday. Now I have to make a whole new damn set … :)

    Jean - Correct!

AdamZero - Yes. This time there is no misunderstanding. About the game.

Jean - I take that as high praise, indeed, and thank you. Though, the little King Of The Mini-Clanks is a riot, I have to say. One of the thrills to me of attending Comicon was meeting Phil Foglio face-toface and getting his autograph. Me, I don’t do autographs. I just … I don’t. I was in and around show business for years, know actors, some of them well-known, one or two might even be called “stars” and autographs are not something I give a crap about. But, somehow, this is different. He’s an artist, and one of the great entertaining storytellers of my generation. He’s my hero, and he was so cool and gracious.

I have to admit some disappointment that he wasn’t wearing his bowler,
    though …

calisto - She compares “Zona” favorably to “Girl Genius.” Can’t say I’d go that far, myself, but it’s always nice to hear.

Aust - It takes someone you love to really really drive you crazy.

Wookie - No, no. They might kill each other at some point - probably not - but it would probably be with blunt force. Or, perhaps, with sarcasm.

Uhl - Pretty much correct, as I said above.

Kamatu - Perhaps, but with Erogenians, “overindulging” in wine is almost an abstract concept, barely understood.

The Old Hack - I love that little side-trip. I got tired of seeing Maxim bare-headed. “I VANT A SAMMICH!”

Dromin - What can I say? They love their king. And, like all servants/family/household they know him with all his idiosyncrasies. They can smirk. f YOU say a word against him it’ll cost you your lungs.

Sleepinin - See above. Oh, yeah. Plus, sentry duty is borrrrrring …

Hwyla - There is a slight cultural divide, and Tor is a bit chauvinistic about his culture. Still, now things are more or less settled.

Zogzog - As I said above, they’re family. Gods help you if a lesser mortal even looks like they’re making fun of the king.

Stig Hemmer - Quite right. In fact, though, you may have noticed that, on the most important point, Tor did just win. He managed to push the cool and reserved Tethik into losing his shit. Now he’s able to relax.

Good job on the last frame with the sky and all. One of my favorite so far. Good to see something “out of doors”, since it has been a while.

  30. taltamir
    August 6th, 2010 at 2:00 pm

the cliche would be for them to start kissing… but this is so much funnier. I really like how you resolved this.

  31. AdamZero
    August 6th, 2010 at 4:21 pm

I’m with KarateCowboy (I know Gun-Fu!) The last panel might make a good wallpaper.

  32. Jean
    August 6th, 2010 at 4:40 pm

Actually, JED, when they did the personalized bookplates, I asked for a sketch of Dingbot Prime because the dingbots are my favorite characters…so this really adds to the praise when I say that–despite the Dingbot King storyline currently running, which I am thrilled to read (did y’all notice how the eyes of the two dingbot primes switched from red to blue, subservient to the King?)–I was looking forward to reading Zona and the conclusion (such as it is) of the game argument…

  33. Elizabeth
    August 6th, 2010 at 8:21 pm

I second Jean. If you have time, JED, could you please put the last frame in the gallery or some place but without the conversation bubbles? I can almost hear the crickets as everything settles in for the night.

  34. Lebbrin
    August 6th, 2010 at 8:55 pm

Agree with AdamZero and Elizabeth, that last panel would make a GREAT desktop.

Love the conclusion to this arc JED. More mastery! THANK you.

  35. Soulworker
    August 6th, 2010 at 9:46 pm

JED: Am with Jean and the rest…I have followed Prof. and Professora Foglio’s work for many many years…what impresses me is their unique ability to combine amazing art work with a compelling multi-dimensional story…Erfworld is another such example…but I gotta admit…Zona’s world really is amazing…it has progessively gotten richer since its beginning (but the artistry and story telling was always there) and certainly it is in these artists league…

  36. Jean
    August 7th, 2010 at 3:05 am

Ooh, yes, Erfworld is also a favorite! A Girl And Her Fed is another one where the storytelling is rich and unique. (The artwork was sketchy, literally, to begin with, but it’s gotten better.)

  37. JR
    August 7th, 2010 at 5:28 am

“He managed to push the cool and reserved Tethik into losing his shit.” And probably the ONLY place/person that could make it happen. Great story-telling, JED. Thank you.

Have to echo th others. The last panel would make a great wallpaper. Please consider?

  38. Lora
    August 7th, 2010 at 7:09 am

@Sleepinin: YOU STOLE MY QUOTE! ;) I absolutely love the jägers and I like their way of ‘buying’ a hat.
(But I’d advise you to eat the cheese; a hat sammich will get spoiled otherwise).

Thanks, now I’m probably going to think about the jägers and GG for the rest of the day and imagine what the boys would do if they ended up in Erogenia… :P

  39. Sheela
    August 8th, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Damn, now I want to see someone “poison” a cup of wine with a battleaxe. :D

  40. ICWT
    August 9th, 2010 at 7:00 am

@Lora - the ultimate crossover was discussed here, Ryan and Lar did not ask Zona to play, probably to keep the battle from being too short. They did keep Richard, but he’s in canon for them. Either that or Rayne couldn’t stop teasing Maldik.

Oh, no, I’m NOT pressing that link! I’m not. Really. I need sleep, y’know. So, I’m not doing it. Not at all. Never. … Well, maybe someday. But not now. I think. … ?? Link… temptation…

  42. Lora
    August 9th, 2010 at 7:18 pm

Can I hate you now, ICWT? I’ve just lost precious sleep… And now I’m hungry. Mmm, webcomics… food…

  43. ICWT
    August 10th, 2010 at 5:09 pm

Oh, come on. it was a simple 2 week story line, it’s not like I linked anything to http://www.tvtropes.org !! THAT would be cruel. (I really need to find a job)

  44. Lora
    August 11th, 2010 at 2:40 am

Yeah, two weeks for that _particular_ story line… and then there’s this button called ‘next’. You’ve ruined my webcomic stop. *sigh* Well, I knew it wouldn’t last… I just don’t know when to get through all those archives.

    See ya next week. ;)
