    I love the Bull King.

    So there.

  2. Midnighwolf
    July 20th, 2010 at 1:29 am

hhmmm…. interesting. Now, the question that I have, and it may be stupid. Which way is it unbalanced?

  3. LorannaPyrel
    July 20th, 2010 at 2:30 am

Ah, ‘barbarian’ politics, where people are unafraid to admit that no, they ARE being rude to you and they DO mean it.

Somehow, I expect Tethik’s apology here will result in furniture being thrown, or uproarous laughter, or both. Possibly even a rueful admission of the Count’s superior skills in understatement. But the cha still needs more than this I bet :)

Wolf- Well, since the King didn’t extend Tethik any “courtesy”…

…You know, I have a possible theory on how and why it’s unbalanced. But only time will tell and, as ever, I’m happy to let JED tell the story in his own time.

Wonderful page as always, the Bull King is definately growing on me- and Tethik is as awsome as ever!

    July 20th, 2010 at 3:36 am

I’m not entirely sure I understand the significance of the… rumbling? in the first four panels? Or is that just Tethik drumming his fingers on the table, because that puts a whole new spin on his character.

Also, I’ve got my theories on how the cha is unbalanced! Time to see if I’m right, or if JED can pull a fast one over me. Again.

  6. Gremalkin
    July 20th, 2010 at 4:50 am

If there is one thing you need to learn Kosine,
it is to never trust JED.
That guy does not have an ace up his sleeve,
he has an entire deck. Im shure he will surprise us all.

    July 20th, 2010 at 5:08 am

Considering the Tor offers no courtesy and such I’m assuming Tethik offended somehow. If Tor had offended or owed Tethik in some manner then being rude would not balance it.

On a random note- It looks like Tor just hurt his hand. Generally when attacking anything (solid object, person, etc) you want to hit with the outside of your hand or the first two fingers. Or at least that’s how I’ve been taught. However it looks like he just smashed his little finger into the table.

  8. Addup2
    July 20th, 2010 at 5:26 am

@Gremalkin Shush - don’t say that, otherwise JED will start hiding another pack up the other sleeve, and we’ll be dooooomed! :)

  9. Fred
    July 20th, 2010 at 5:52 am

Is that serving girl in panel 6 sporting a bikini tan line?

  10. Sirena
    July 20th, 2010 at 8:05 am

Hmm…I wonder. Are the first panels plain nervousness or morse code?
If there is a morse code in Erogenia, that is.

  11. Hwyla
    July 20th, 2010 at 8:39 am

Tethic’s avoidance of the subject of ‘balance’ seems to be a real ‘red’ flag for the bull here. I especially like the bull king’s stance in the last panel - so very bull-like! With a gold torc for the bell!

  12. ICWT
    July 20th, 2010 at 8:51 am

I’m thinking more along the lines of Charlemagne’s line from Pippin: “That’s all right, son, just don’t let it happen again!”

@wolfgang - judging by panel 6, he just rammed his fist down and forward not swung it in a hammer arc, so he would have broken a knuckle, especially since he hit the table hard enough to make wine spill out of the goblet, which had been freshly topped off in #380-4, OTOH in #380-1 it is plain this is not a small delicate table.

@Fred - she’s in her ‘company’ loincloth as opposed to her everyday, it rides higher.

@Sirena - awfully dull message, only 2 letters (or two words)

@Addup2 - there’s a word for people who bet against JED.
    The word is “CIDER !”

  13. Sleepinin
    July 20th, 2010 at 9:21 am

Nice serving girl in the back there.

Now, the question we all must ask here is on whose side the imbalance is. Does the King owe Tethik something, or vice versa?

Either way, I think we can see how this d00d got to become King Bull. >.>

  14. John
    July 20th, 2010 at 11:31 am

The Old Hack - Me, too. :)

    Midnightwolf - To the left.

LorannaPyrel - It will result in the result that is results in, that’s for sure. And yes, Tor is a bit annoyed that his rudeness was, for the moment, being ignored.

Jason - We hope that the reason, once revealed, will be at least interesting. :) Don’t think I’ll be able to get it done this week. Gonna be at ComiCon! So you all will just have to wait until Next Tuesday.

Kosine - It’s just Tethik drumming his fingers in the yawning gap in the conversation.

Gremalkin - You give me too much credit. But … I’ll take it, anyway! =D

Wolfgang - Tor seems to think he is owed something, yes. As to him hurting his hand, it will take more than an angry thump on a marble table to break his tough old bones. Now, if he’d been *trying* to break something, he probably could have.

Addup2 - We’re all doooomed anyway. Just trying to keep ourselves amused on the way to our final destination.

Fred - Yes. As ICWT points out below, this is not the only thing she wears. Her name is Etearia, and she’s a princess, and Tor’s niece. Her job is to stand and serve, but mostly to listen and observe. Later her uncle will ask her opinion of the proceedings, and her advice. She’s the brightest of his sister’s children, and his favorite. She generally takes the longer view and notices the things that even Erogenians leave unsaid which Tor, being fairly literal, sometimes misses.

Hwyla - Well, we often endow the colorful characters in these type of tales with the characteristics of their particular totem. It’s part of why it’s fun to work in fantasy.

ICWT - “Can I have my knife back?” Hehe. I was in that show back in my misspent youth. Chorus, not the lead that time.

Sleepinin - Tor is a good king. Maybe not a great king, but definitely a good one. Sometimes you need to bash him upside the head with a polo mallet to get through to him, but that’s true of a lot of Erogenians, even Zona.

It seems to me like King Bull is provoking a fight and Tethik… apologizes! :D

I was looking for a code, too. But it’s the same sequence repeated.

..or Tethik was awaiting for the next shoe to drop - and Tor is adamant that he has extended no courtesy.. Tethik is in his debt, for Blondie… and now we find out what the wergild will be - Tor has a task in mind for tethik… it’s a setup, and Tehik knows and accepts it… just doing business.

no, Ed. Tethik and Tor have history.

You all keep forgetting. THe blondie was related to the FOX tribe; not the BULL tribe. XP

@Addup2 … …You mean you didn’t…? DUUUUDE! There’s -already- a pack up that second sleeve! Not to mention the decks tucked into the top of each of Tethik’s boots!

    July 20th, 2010 at 8:21 pm

I may be the only one to believe this, but is the debt owed to Tethik instead of Tor? and Tor is pissed that he hasn’t been asked/begged to balance the cha. That he’s been in Tethik’s debt for YEARS, with no way out? That simple courtesy, isn’t what’s demanded? just musings of an odd mind, mayhap.

    **FREEZE

  22. The MacNut
    July 20th, 2010 at 9:16 pm

Hmm, yeah I thought Tor wasn’t being helpful ’cause of Blondie’s death, but now I see there’s deeper history between him and Tethik, with the incurred debt to the cha being part of it. As to who owes who, while only JED knows for sure, I doubt it’s Tor owing Tethik, ’cause considering his circumstances, if there was ever a time for Tethik to call in THAT marker, it would be now.

No, I think the debt is on Tethik’s side, and Tor is going to require him to balance it through some sort of services rendered before Tor is willing to even extend him basic courtesy. Rude as hell, even cruel, but it implies that Tethik owes some serious cha balancing, at least in Tor’s mind. It also means the services rendered are most likely going to require a serious investment of time and effort on Tethik’s part, probably even the risking of life and limb.

    July 20th, 2010 at 11:02 pm

Mcnut your on the button as usual.there is a serious matter of imbalance over here and Tethick is on the having to kiss and make up side of the fence. Erogenians you have to love them. blunt as usual.

  25. Elizabeth
    July 21st, 2010 at 3:10 am

@AdamZero- You’re right. In the page for Nov. 7 2008, Tethik asks the princeling if he is of the Fox Tribe, which the boy confirms.

@ICEKAT- I agree. Otherwise, it would be odd for Tethik to drum his fingers. Drumming fingers is usually a sort of “I’m waiting for your apology young man” type of thing. And a nice ironic apology at the end. King Tor must be having a… cow. So to speak.

    July 21st, 2010 at 3:10 am

I have to say my favorite bit of this whole strip right here, is that woman in the background. I’m sure it was an accident but I love how she looks as though she were thinking “annnnd here we go”

  27. The Old Hack
    July 21st, 2010 at 4:26 am

I dunno, I think I am going in the other direction out of sheer perversity. I think the King owes Tethik something that Tethik for some reason refused to let him pay, be it due to diplomatic necessity or cultural clash. At least it certainly strikes me as possible, and actually as more likely than Tethik leaving a debt unpaid.

  28. ICWT
    July 21st, 2010 at 7:06 am

hmmmm… I think I have to agree with the faction that have Tor in Tethik’s debt. That “I do apologize” is so utterly Wodehouse (and we saw that Tethik loves his Jeeves quotes the very first time we saw him). Thus Tethik is the one in the (subservient) position of control. A bottom who knows how much power he has. The drumming and minimal comments are designed to really torque Tor (sorry about that) into using his safe-word.

P.S. Tor has been king for well over 2 decades (see “The King is Dead”), so I hypothesize a very old debt from their boyhoods.

  29. The Macnut
    July 21st, 2010 at 7:31 am

On the other hand, I can also see the point of those saying it’s Tor who owes the cha debt. I can see Tethik holding onto that debt, saving that marker for the right moment…which is most likely now. If there’s any time Tethik would need a king in his debt, it’s now. He knows it, and Tor knows it too. If it is Tor who owes the debt, then Tethik is drawing out calling in the marker, making Tor suffer just a little bit longer, waiting for Tethik to say those magic words, “I’m here to collect” or something like that.

Tor’s rudeness makes sense in this scenario too-he’s so pissed about Tethik not allowing him to balance the scales that he’s not even going to extend basic courtesies until Tethik allows the balancing. But like I said, only JED knows for sure, and I guess we’ll find out next week….

  30. AdamZero
    July 21st, 2010 at 2:03 pm

    @Macnut: That’s certainly a possibility…. but I’m almost kinda hoping for a friday update.

  31. Hwyla
    July 21st, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Oh, I think we can still have a Friday update and yet not find the cha debt answer before next week. Since when has JED given us the answers THAT fast? I think he’ll let it play out a little more.

Holy sh__ er, Toledo… Elfguy. LMAO!!!

  36. Sheela
    July 22nd, 2010 at 10:40 pm

This is definately a case where I could see Tor being as upset over being owed something, as being upset over owing someone Tethik something. I really doubt he’d be happy about owing Tethik *anything*, even if Tethik said he would want nothing for it.

Like, if Tethik told him that he did not feel badly treated, when in fact Tor has tried being rude towards him. (and considering Tethiks position, being hunted for murder, you can make a good case for that) I don’t think Tor would feel happy about that at all !

On another note - Perhaps they have been romantically involved in the past ? That could certainly throw a wrench in the works.

    And .. and … uhh .. I’m rambling!
    m’sorry, I’ll stop now. :)

  38. The Minstrel Knight
    July 24th, 2010 at 3:12 am

I… am impressed by all of this series. The characters are fascinating; the emotions are so palpable that I can just taste it. It makes me smile with joy to read this, frown with rage at the enemies, I, love, this, comic.

And I’m a first time reader who found the comic yesterday afternoon. :D Got up to this point innnn…. Twelve hours…

    HELLLLL YEAAAAAAAH!

  39. Lora
    July 24th, 2010 at 5:14 pm

Ah, Tethik, you screwd person. :P You really know how to piss off an Erogenian, don’t you?

  40. Lictre
    July 26th, 2010 at 2:57 am

@Lora Tethik’s an experienced, canny politician with probably a couple decades dealing with Erogenians. Don’t count him out this easy. What’s one of the things a bull-fighter wants to do? Get a bull charging mad, make him commit to big gestures.

Tethik may not look it, but watch for finesse, especially when dealing with the bull.

  41. Lora
    July 26th, 2010 at 5:56 am

Oh, I’m not counting him out of anything. Quite the opposite. :P Pissing Tor off is all part of it.
