I am in love. Not in a MILF way–though she is hawt–but because yes, yes, she IS a true queen. And now we see the outrage burning deep inside the steel hand covered in her silk-velvet mind-games.

    *stands and applauds JED*

This is bait. She’s baiting him. Now he’s going to rant about his Urtt dealings and it’ll all go to pot.

  3. Joe
    June 16th, 2010 at 1:15 am

Oh well. Nice try to get it out of him, though.

And actually, it sounds to me like she gave him one last chance to step out of her cross-hairs, and live. He has chosen not to rise to the opportunity.

Having dealt with one or two enraged madman myself (you wouldn’t believe what ‘customers’ you can encounter in the nightshift of a gas station ;) ) it’s allways a BAD idea to turn them your back … except you know exactly what you’re doing.

Wow, Maldik certainly is the clueless one. He comes in here, intending to play mind games on Mumsy, and somehow forgot that she’s got a tenth-degree black belt in Mind-fu, and he’s still trying to keep the darn white belt from falling off, taking his pants with–

(Ew. I accidentally let myself imagine Maldik without pants in that last metaphor. Someone pass the brain bleach, please.)

Also, JD, that was an excellent use of “This. Is. SPARTA!” sans the usual cheeziness that trope usually entails. ;-)

    Ouch!

God, what a worthless POS he is. About the only redeeming value he has is to make Uurts look better by comparison. They, at least, are intellectually honest about what they’re doing. They kill you and eat you because you are tasty, not because they need to bolster their ego.

    June 16th, 2010 at 3:11 am

The truth hurts…I really like the juxtaposition of the relationships between Maldik’s dysfunctional relationship with his his mother and brother versus and Zona and her comparatively functional one with her mother (and great one with her sister). I too wonder about the Queen’s purpose in baiting him here…I agree that she “loves” her children in her own way, and perhaps as Joe said, she is giving him a chance to step back from the train-wreck that she sees coming…again in the only fashion she knows he will respond to…Sorta makes you wonder why Maldik turned into such a idiot in the first place…there have been a few clues (favoritism, death of his father etc…but I think to align with the Urrts took some extra push or perhaps it was just the opportunity of his brother’s crusade….just pondering at 3 in the am…

  9. VGA Ubersoldat
    June 16th, 2010 at 4:12 am

I see Maldik doing something really, really, really bad in a fit of anger. I hope I am wrong, but if the queen is done for from a dagger in the behind, or even poison in her food/drink then things are going to get bad for our hero and heroines, but that is drama I suppose.

  10. The MacNut
    June 16th, 2010 at 4:55 am

Maldik ain’t doin’ dick (pardon the pun). His Mom has just shown how weak and useless he really is. She has nothing to worry about, he’s just going to storm out and fume and fret about his “humiliation”.

Soon enough the Queen’s going to turn the tables and show how it’s REALLY done. I fully expect to see Maldik’s head end up on a pike as a result.

  11. Acipenser
    June 16th, 2010 at 5:08 am

I do not agree with your analysis of “nothing to worry about” , MacNut. She just confirmed that there is an easily manipulated idiot as regent and she does not know who is pulling his strings. At the moment it is not herself.

I wonder how she’ll act to discredit him. I hope it does not come to killing.

I really like these latest pages, JED. While the Erogenia-feast-scene was fun, I NEED to see the plot advance. Through its many inevitable twists and twits (like Maldik).

  12. firegoat
    June 16th, 2010 at 5:30 am

Oh man, I almost feel sorry for that little schmuck. Can you imagine growing up, knowing full well that you really aren’t so bright, and having a mother who is superior to you in every conceivable way? If he wasn’t such an evil little worm it wouldn’t be so funny to watch.

  13. The MacNut
    June 16th, 2010 at 6:31 am

@Acipenser; it is precisely because Maldik is so easily manipulated that he’s no threat to the Queen. She is well able to protect herself from him, as she just proved. As to the threat to the kingdom, she’ll easily deal with that. She may need help, but she’ll get it done.

  14. AdamZero
    June 16th, 2010 at 6:35 am

Acipenser: Maldik has betrayed a sacred alliance with Erogenia, he’s made a pact with the very creatures that treaty was sworn to defend against. He tried to sell out the princesses of the ruler of said betrayed allies.

And that’s not even getting into all the crap he’s done toward his own people.

Boy’s Cha is going to get balanced, and HARD.

  15. Jason
    June 16th, 2010 at 6:37 am

MacNut- I’ve commented before on people underestimating Maldik’s puppeteer’s. Let’s face it, if he were doing all of this himself he wouldn’t have gotten nearly as far as he has. His “backers” know what they’re doing.
I’m looking forward to the developement of the story. As ever, I’m happy to sit back and watch JED weave his story-telling magic.

    THIS MESSAGE IS TO InCestusWeTrust.
Ok seriously screw you guy. I was just checking my favorite webcomics before bed like I normally do. I randomly clicked on ur fanfic link….I now have an hour and a half before work, my sleep cycle is going to be wrecked for like a week straight, I BLAME YOU GODS I BLAME YOU!!!!!!!!! I’m not even done with the whole thing, I copied the rest to my phone so I can secretly read the rest during work today… I HATE YOU, YOUR GOING TO GET ME FIRED…thanks for posting the link…post more…your worse than a crack dealer

  17. InCestusWeTrust
    June 16th, 2010 at 7:30 am

@TB - Awww, dude, you say the sweetest things. Hey, I thought I told you it was “Almost as addictive as COZ”. ALWAYS check the word count before starting a new fanfic or page number before a new webcomic if you want to bractice safe, non-drowsy browsing.

Guess I forgot to mention, I roll as an Evil Librarian, Chaotic Librarian was just too easy. LEARN TO READ FASTER. Think of it as evolution in action. But wasn’t the new chapter #26 he added last night awesome? Hope you weren’t drinking tea. - XXXOOO, ICWT.

Oooooh an on time update from John too! This day gets better and better! Me so happy.

@JED - Yah, I see the divergence from the Plantagenets, the French never wanted to eat the English, at least without a nice sauce and expecting to be thanked for it afterwards.

  18. InCestusWeTrust
    June 16th, 2010 at 7:37 am

@TB - serious tip: I have my webcomics arranged in folders by posting date, one for every day of the week plus daily items. I open two instances of Firefox, one with my e-mail and in the other, open that days folder and click “open all in tabs’ then switch back to my e-mail browser and work for 10 minutes or so, check my news feed if no e-mail (HAH). When I reopen Browser 1, all the tabs are loaded and ready to be popped through. saves me easily 30 minutes a day. but then I have a LOT of WebComics.

Hey, I may be Evil but I am also a Librarian.

  19. InCestusWeTrust
    June 16th, 2010 at 7:50 am

ohhhhh … You said you want me to “… post more …” ?????!!!!!

    *Does the Snoopy Dance*

Nah, I’ll hold off a day, I’ve messed up your feng shui enuf for one day. http://www.bbspot.com/news/2004/07/feng_shui_motherboard.html

    Buh-Bye.

  20. Lora
    June 16th, 2010 at 8:16 am

ICWT; Pfft! Some of us are ‘Good’ Librarians, who only give people the links we know they want. :P And the links they ask for themselves… he he he.
I could post links to some great ffs, but no one has asked, so I won’t take your time away from you.

Oh, I just can’t get enough of the queen, JED. :D Yanora is amazing and Maldik is reduced to shouting ’shut up’. He really is pathetic compared to her.

  21. Mish_Lady
    June 16th, 2010 at 8:28 am

I agree that we shouldn’t underestimate Maldik’s puppateers. We should also not underestimate Maldik. Yanora might also have said her statement in the last panel to see if it would make him actually try to kill her. I agree that he might let loose with his plan of the Urtts. Although his shut up’s might be a realization deep inside of what he’s doing wrong.

@AdamZero-I agree, his cha is about to get balanced SOOOOOO bad. I wouldn’t be surprised if Yanora has more listeners than just her lady-in-waiting to see if she can goad Maldik into revealing anything.

  22. Lerris
    June 16th, 2010 at 10:17 am

Lora, Maldik isn’t just pathetic compared to Yanora he’s just plain pathetic period. If he didn’t have some serious backers i doubt he’d gotten past step one of the plan. I would be amazed to hear the fellow puts his own clothes on.

  23. SteinarB
    June 16th, 2010 at 10:47 am

That fourth panel… Fantastic! _That_ is someone who knows how to be intimidating! I imagine there aren’t many who have seen that furious expression on the queen’s face and gone home feeling entirely safe. :) That is a right proper “I have had just about enough of this foolishness” face.

  24. OddCodicologist
    June 16th, 2010 at 1:54 pm

Wonderful again. I am always effusive when it comes to challenges of zona, i know, but i feel that it is fully justified.

Although, i do think of these ‘particular side’ plot parts as ‘the ‘challenges of maldik’ although, maybe that is just tying shoelaces and the such like ;)

To add to my comments on penknifes previously, I forgot to mention that, despite my justifications for practical reasons why maldik could be carrying a knife, it probably was just to make him feel like a big man… However, playing on that i have a question (for general musing rather than specifically at our liege lord and storyteller) Has she really lost her temper? or is still part of an extended plot to make sure the ancillae escape with embroidered messages (but not embroidered truths, I assume) goes smoothly?

  25. Kaila
    June 16th, 2010 at 7:17 pm

Goddamn you Cestus! I have a bus to catch in an hour or so, and I can’t find my bus card, so no matter HOW fast I can read - which is considerably fast, I grant you - I can’t. Yet.

    Bastard.

  26. Crazeyal
    June 16th, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Over the years, I have enjoyed the artwork, the action, the staging, and mostly the way you infuse your love of music into magic. Today I must say that your writing is truly fantastic. I have loved the queen’s character and poise from her introduction. Today has really sealed my admiration for the way you portray this character. She is Regal in her soul. She OWNS not only herself, but dares anyone not to look at her and see Royalty.

    Again..

    Bravisimo

  27. Gremalkin
    June 17th, 2010 at 1:32 am

That’s one lady you dont want to mess with, at least not in the bad way ;)

  28. Acipenser
    June 17th, 2010 at 2:52 am

    MacNut: I envy your optimism.

AdamZero: Oh I agree. It’s for the queen that I hope no killing is necessary - not for Maldik’s sake. After all, there are other ways to make these problems go away. I think Maldik’s Cha needs balancing more in the way of hard work and responsibility for his actions instead of a simple ending.

Although I’m not sure these Kivalians, even the queen think of cha that much.

  29. Black Ethel
    June 17th, 2010 at 8:07 am

Ooooh…she just spits it out like venom.
I wouldn’t want to be on her bad side.

  30. Sleepinin
    June 17th, 2010 at 11:40 am

I think I can see why the relationship with her husband was so tempestuous.

    Any comments on that, JED?

  31. JEDraft
    June 17th, 2010 at 12:54 pm

Jean - Yes, Her Maj is a powerful person in any environment. As QE1 of England once put it, “Though the sex to which I belong is considered weak you will nevertheless find me a rock that bends to no wind.” And yes, she is a little ticked off.

AdamZero - Maybe, maybe not. :)

Joe - Weelll, maybe. But wait until tomorrow. There is more.

Wolfhardt - A: Her Maj generally know what she’s doing. B: Maldik is not a madman. He’s … Maldik.

T’Renn - Didn’t even think of it. Have to admit, I haven’t even seen the movie, apart from a few clips. It just seemed appropriate in the instance, given her gathering intensity.

    Grey - ;)

Jim Farris - True - Urtts are, in their way, nearly as honest as Erogenians. Hadn’t quite considered that aspect before. Hmmmm.

VGA Ubersoldat- Oh yes. THIS. IS. DRAMA!!!!

The MacNut - Well, as the song says, “You may be wrong for all I know, but you may be right” :)

Acipenser - I think it was more like she was trying to get him to admit what Tethik and she are fairly sure is the truth, actually. And she will get it done - oh, but what will get done? Ye shall see, kiddiewinkies.

Jason - Hee-hee! What was it Anthony Hopkins’ Richard said? “We could tangle spiders in the webs you weave …”

TB, InCestusWeTrust - Still haven’t had a minute to look at it. =C

Lora - Well, “Shut Up” isn’t the last thing he’ll say. Stay tuned until tomorrow.

Mish_Lady - Well, we shall see a little bit tomorrow. Nonetheless, this is a long-form plot. Don’t expect too much all at once, but when all is revealed, it should not disappoint. As Corporal Nym said, “I say little; but when time shall serve, there shall be smiles.”

Lerris - I wish I could go into some detail here to explain how Maldik got as far as he has, but then what fun would that be? Suffice to say that it has as much to do with stupidity and incompetence as it does with cleverness and planning.

SteinarB - Thanks. And yeah - she’s pissed.

OddCodicologist - And, deep in my narcissistic little soul, I love to hear the effusivity (is that a word? Maybe.) Thanks! =) And, because I loves me some drama, I will not comment on all your speculation, but make you watch and wait.

Kaila - Two words: Evelyn Wood. ;)

Crazeyal - Thank you. Just wanted to say that, in addition to fictional and historical sources, I have actually known queens in my time. One remarkable lady, though a dancer by trade, was one such. Actually one of the coolest people in my life (alas, I lost her friendship with the divorce. Happens. People choose sides, inevitably. ) She is cool, sophisticated, tall, exquisitely lovely, deeply well-read and NOBODY to screw around with. One of those people who are fun to be with, and who always make you just a little nervous at the same time. Also has a somewhat tempestuous relationship with her husband whom she adores and is passionately dedicated to.

    Gremalkin - True, dat. :)

Black Ethel - She’s just a wee bit vexed at her younger son.

Sleepinin - Both Yanora and Kendrik were extremely powerful, intelligent alpha personalities who throve on challenge and conflict. They naturally would challenge and test each other, constantly. Most often it was nothing more serious than give-and-take with the occasional flower pot or priceless antique thrown around the room. Sometimes one or the other went too far. In Yanora’s case it wound her up in the White Tower on three occasions. In Kendrik’s case he wound up with serious stab wounds in his extremities. Yet they could never be without each other for long, and with all the fallout for friends, family and the kingdom itself they always reconciled.

And the make-up sex was amazing. “If this tower’s rockin’ don’t bother knockin’…” ;)

well, what can i add to all that but well done JED

  33. TB
    June 17th, 2010 at 7:30 pm

    To InCestus.
Ok read the fanfic for the 2x, just finished reading all of COZ for the 50th time. Need more, I’m seriously jonesing here. Dear Jed I know that Mentl hasn’t had much higher education ie engineering or science and such, and has found a great respect for the way erogenians do things ( So do I) but do you think he’ll try and apply any earth bound tech in this new and relatively tech free world? steam, internal combustion engines etc? I thought it would at least make for an interesting conversation with Tula

  34. warnie

TB he could kick start the Erogenian- industrial revolution!

  35. SamuraiDemonPuppy
    June 18th, 2010 at 1:51 am

TB: Are you thinking of with the “Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court”? It wasn’t too pretty in the end in that one.

  36. Crazeyal
    June 18th, 2010 at 2:12 am

Although.. Her son may be every bit as useless and stupid as he seems.. Methinks mumsy might have pushed just a WEE bit too far with this last one. It’s an easily recognized truth. Those hurt worst of all. Rage can make someone desperate and unthinking. Pushing someone to the point of psychotic break… sometimes the unthinkable happens…

I shudder to think what is unthinkable to a traitorous murdering cowardly pervert.

  37. Lora

    Here you go, TB: http://www.area52hkh.net/author.php?name=Admiral+Q+O

You just start with the first chapter of the first story and then read on. 8) I don’t know what your genres are, but this is M/M and a SG/Highlander crossover, mostly SG.
If you need more comics then there is always: http://lfgcomic.com/ http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20021104 http://taoofgeek.com/archive.php?date=20071006 (Note this link is not from the beginning).

That should keep you occupied for a while. :P

  38. TheLastGarou
    June 18th, 2010 at 6:48 am

I’m afraid I have to agree with Crazeyal and VGA Ubersoldat, I hope we’re wrong, but the look on Maldiks face in that last panel is genuinely murderous.

  39. ICWT
    June 18th, 2010 at 7:29 am

@TB you asked and I answer: http://www.tvtropes.org is a fun unwiki to kill some time with. for more (like somewhat) organized content, check the archives at satirewire.com alas defunct.

@SamuraiDemonPuppy - No, TB is referring to the ummm… results unquote that Harry Potter is getting trying to be the founder of the field of scientific wizarding. I have a friend who writes pretty good ff who is shocked out of her socks when I tell her this is pushing 5k reviews.

@JED - NO! We all need you chained to your oar. These are not the droids you’re looking for. TB is correct, every chapter must be read at lest twice as the last sentence can totally stand the preceding chapter on it’s head (TB will agree that #36 is an excellent example). Put down the teacup and step away from the fanfic. Please note that none of the people cursing me are saying they can stop any time they want to and beware.

To my fellow perpetrators of parenthood, happy Dad’s Day! - Your Uncle Cestus.

  40. ICWT

*redface* #26, it’s not up to 36 chapters, …. yet.

  41. ICWT
    June 18th, 2010 at 9:23 am

@Lora - thanx for ToG, colleague. see y’all in DC next weekend? I think HP&MoR is a perfect example of the other side of Sturgeon’s Law.There had to be something on ffn that is *NOT* crap.

  42. NakhtiChaos

  44. John
    June 18th, 2010 at 4:49 pm

warnie - Mucho thanks, mate. :)

TB - I’m sure there’s a twelve-step program for that. ;) As for Mentl injecting Earth tech into Erogenian society, he’s so far not even been focused on that at all. After all, in order to even think of that, he’d have to see a problem that could be better handled with something from home. So far, apart from some things not shown on these pages, he’s not seen anything in Erogenia that obviously needs improvement that Earth-tech could provide. There are undoubtedly some, but remember the wise words of Sting:
“I never saw no miracle of science
That didn’t go from a blessing to a curse”

    SamuraiDemonPuppy - Perzactly.

    Crazeyal - Just wait.

Lora - Oh, great. More time wasters! :)

    TheLastGarou - Just wait.

ICWT - Okay, now I know I’m tragically un-hip, even on my own site. I only got about 10% of what you just wrote. =O

    NakhtiChaos - Just wait.

Kern - Lady Bethela is not. Happy.

  45. Lora
    June 18th, 2010 at 7:18 pm

You are very welcome, ICWT. ;) I’ve not had the time to read all the way through the archive yet, but I’ve grown quite fond of TOG. Me, I can say for sure I won’t be in DC… I’m firmly rooted in Northern Europe until the day I get money (for spending) again.
Hmm, I have found several fics on ff.n that I think are good. I guess it depends greatly on the fandom and author.
Oh, in case you don’t already read it, Schlock Mercanary is very much a timekiller.(!)

JED, well, I did say it was for TB, but everyone else if free to click the links. (It’s on your own responsibility though). Slight warning on the fic… The chapters are not short, not even close.

  46. Lora

*sigh* Mercenary, I mean… Schlock Mercenary.

  47. ICWT
    June 18th, 2010 at 8:05 pm

@Lora et alia - Only one response possible, “Please, I want some more”

@John - Yeah, that’s what my kids say about me too.

DC is the American Library Association conference in Washington next week. Whoo, get funky!

Sturgeon’s Law: “90% of everything is crap” (some say 99% since Sturgeon never knew the world wide web) which means in essence for every COZ there’s 99 webcomics of lesser quality, (duh) BUT when person-in-the-street is asked ‘do you read webcomics?’ she can answer “No, they’re all trash” with perfect sincerity because she was only exposed to the other 99%.

I know other good fanfics besides HP & the Methods of Rationality, but not many that are so impossible to turn off.
    ==============================================
On the subject of un-hipness, I have a question you might be able to help me with:

So, you’re in the desert, you have nothing else to do. Why not name the freaking horse? :D

  48. Crazeyal
    June 18th, 2010 at 10:07 pm

    No DC is DRAGONCON!!!!

  49. Joe
    June 18th, 2010 at 10:52 pm

Never thought of Maldik as the Inspector Clouseau of Kivalia… too obviously mean, and we really haven’t had the chance to see his luck in humorous action. Or is it humorous. I wonder what Urrt magick can do with probabilities?

“Lerris - I wish I could go into some detail here to explain how Maldik got as far as he has, but then what fun would that be? Suffice to say that it has as much to do with stupidity and incompetence as it does with cleverness and planning.”

  50. Professor 61771
    June 19th, 2010 at 4:56 pm

She is a strong queen because her country needs a strong queen. She is trying to get him to show some spine and save his own life.
The sad part here is that they do love each other, it is obvious, in how they behave. Maldik is, somewhere in there, trying to be like his mother by being better than his mother…but he is not up to it. His desperation and ignorance are his driving forces now, and she cannot allow that.
She has determined he has not the spine his country needs, nor indeed any spine at all…and now she will kill him. With Love.

  51. Lora
    June 19th, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Crazeyal, Dragoncon was actually also the first thing that went through my mind… But then just about every geek I know is talking about one con or another right now, so no surprise there. :P

ICWT, more you say? Want to say want genres/fandoms you like or do you just want to be exposed to whatever? ;) I happen to have a list of good SW, bit mixed genres(but mostly humor, romance, drama/tradegy M/F and M/M). I have had less luck with good HP, but I’ll admit I haven’t looked very hard.

    What horse? :P

  52. ICWT

@Lora - I like quality SW, ST, LOTR or HP, good VorkosiganFic which is tougher because LMB sets the bar so damned high. Grantville Gazette is probably my favorite *moderated* submission forum. Thanks. I’m a practicing heterosexual but do not mind M/M if it is integral to the plot and not written at a 12 year old level and just a build-up to a light-saber joke.

As a Yankee, Atlanta is a little out of my range, though I did do WorldCon in Philly 2001 and hit most from Washington to Boston. Finishing up my MLIS in 6 weeks so won’t be posting as much, including attending ALA.

As for the Horse… sorry, you just flunked one of the 3 classic Boomer ID tests. The others are: Define ‘Dayglo’ and did you ever own any? and How many Vietnam Veterans does it take to screw in a lightbulb? You don’t know? Then I guess you Weren’t F*$@ing There, Man!
