Thank you thank you JED! This page was the best part of today, which included homemade chocolate cake.
June 13th, 2010 at 2:46 am
Wow. THIS I did not expect. She’s goading him. Now we have to wait until Tuesday to find out why… Let the speculation begin.
Excellent page yet again JED. I’ll be madly pressing my F5 key on Tuesday.
June 13th, 2010 at 3:07 am
You could say that she is a genuine drama queen
June 13th, 2010 at 3:49 am
Whether it’s a gun or knife or threat of the noose - don’t carry it if you aren’t willing to use it.
June 13th, 2010 at 3:49 am
Lol, the clock doth tolls for that young mans head, for the venomous tounge of thy queen is making him mad XD
June 13th, 2010 at 7:51 am
Yep. You are in control, Maldik. Completely in control. Ayup. Control, that’s what you’re in. Mmhmm. Heh, sometimes the queen reminds me just a little bit of Havelock Vetinari, the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork in the Discworld books, and that is not a bad thing.
June 13th, 2010 at 8:17 am
Gremalkin:
Good one.
June 13th, 2010 at 8:24 am
*Facepalm* F.T.W.
*applauds*
June 13th, 2010 at 8:47 am
Ok I didn’t think it was possible to like the queen anymore then i already did but damn it happened hehe i love her antics.
June 13th, 2010 at 9:32 am
I think in a strange way, Maldik doesn’t WANT to kill her. While she’s his prisoner, his plans for anything except killing her can proceed, and in a twisted way, he wants to impress her, to earn some praise and approval from the critical authority figure that’s always been in his life. Also, she’s STILL his mother, even though she and we may agree that the world would be a better place if that spot of the gene pool got a good cleansing acid-shock for sterilization purposes.
Besides, how better to emphasize his rise to power than to keep reminding the person who used to be in power that he’s on top now? If she dies, he can’t GLOAT! Her death would make him fully committed to his plans and partners, and he knows that if the truth is ever discovered, he’ll be rightly labeled a kin-killing regicide, and EVERY act of his reign would be tainted.
He’s stepping onto the stage of history with his actions and he knows it. That sort of act is terrifying, no matter what you’re doing, and he knows there are some frightfully intelligent people who’d be examining his rise to power, many with the good of Kivalia nowhere in their minds.

@SteinarB - But Lord V never has to raise his voice. Thanks for the nod to my second favorite DW character (after Nanny Ogg).
@JED - that wasn’t a nice thing to do to the lady-in-waiting. Maldik DOES have the level of balls it would take to have her arrested and tortured, and she might hurt something holding in her snickers. Not to mention any guards on the scene. *Ya can’t just murder <<>> witness, can ya?* .
That being said …. ***SNERK *** *tea and lungs were not meant to interact* (with a nod to Less Wrong and the fabulous HP&MoR!)
June 13th, 2010 at 9:55 am
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5782108 *DO NOT attempt to drink ANY liquids while reading*, almost as addictive as COZ.
p.s. that was supposed to be … *one* witness.
June 13th, 2010 at 11:04 am
Well, you don’t get the reputation Zanora has by collecting bottle caps, clearly.
June 13th, 2010 at 12:14 pm
Do you get the feeling the Lady in Waiting has seen just a few too many of these little drama fests? I’m getting the “Oh, God, not again…” vibe off her in the last panel.
I love Yanora’s expression in the last panel. I think I’ve seen it on a couple of teen-aged daughters…
Sorry, Maldik, she’s not mad, she’s just running circles around you. Her biggest disappointment in you is that you can’t keep up.
June 13th, 2010 at 4:20 pm
lovely, just lovely! one question is the word not “staunch”? it may be just because i am canadian that thatspelling seems off.
June 13th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
Like I said…*facepalm* for the win!
June 13th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
SamuraiDemonPuppy, I get that feeling off her, too.
The baroness seems exasperated with the whole thing.
Great page as always, JED:
(Aaaannnd I’m off to bed; the birds have started singing…)
June 13th, 2010 at 10:26 pm
Here’s an interesting question. Maldik is an idiot runt of the litter spoiled lil so an so… Yannora is as graceful and calculating as Queen Elizabeth..anyone in the Kivalian court would see this, so why would anyone with half an ounce of brains throw in with Maldik and his little plot. Cause lord knows he couldn’t have pulled this off on his own.
June 13th, 2010 at 10:27 pm
No, “stanch” is correct; it means “to stop the flow of”. “Staunch” can mean the same thing but is more often used to mean “firm or steadfast”.
June 14th, 2010 at 1:23 am
Reverse psychology…gotta love the queen.
June 14th, 2010 at 6:10 am
Oh she’s fun. fun, fun, fun! Another wonderful page.
Peregrin - a knife isn’t just a weapon, its also a tool. Could be for eating. Not sure if Maldik can write, but if he can he’ll need a knife to sharpen his quill (a ‘penknife’). There’s one medieval discussion on writing (and for my sins I cannot remember who wrote it or even what century they wrote it in) that complains about scribes misusing their penknives to trim nails, clean ears, eat with and the such like. Pretty versatile bit of kit really!
June 14th, 2010 at 11:01 am
The second panel leads me to wonder what IS really happening with Gudik.
Did he pull a Richard The Lionhearted and get himself killed? Was the war he went to fight REALLY a needless one, or necessary? Is he a dork, or a respectable king? Inquiring minds want to know.
June 14th, 2010 at 11:15 am
@MaxBigfoot Another important question… Did Gudick actually DIE? Or is he simply missing, and presumed killed?
@TB People would throw in behind his little plot because they know he’s too much of a dim-witted tool to realize he’s being manipulated, used, and eventually robbed blind. Also, he’s in the proper line of succession to the throne. He’s an ideal front man for a plot… access to authority, and less depth of thought than a mirror.
June 14th, 2010 at 11:16 am
Steinar B: You’re not the only one who she reminds of Lord V. Now just imagine what their offspring would be like.
TB: The Kilallian Royal family more reminds me of the Plantagenets.
June 14th, 2010 at 12:01 pm
This whole scene made me feel a little bad for Maldik. Granted, he’s a miserable, inadequate, stupid, delusional freak, but he clearly is a miserable, inadequate, stupid, delusional freak who rather desperately wants to be recognized by his mother.
June 14th, 2010 at 12:26 pm
@Lyra - *Well, there it is…* - Emperor Joseph II, ‘Amadeus’
June 14th, 2010 at 1:16 pm
Elizabeth - Wow. I’m frankly honored, to think that my humble efforts could compete with homemade chocolate cake.
Lebbrin - Well, always glad to surprise you folks. Hope the twisty-turny thing called the plot does not disappoint.
Gremalkin - Fifty lashes with the wet noodle! Oy!
Peregrin - True enough, she called his bluff.
zangoules - She’s a piece of work, all right. And it gets worse.
SteinarB - I think she and Vetinari would get along, though seemingly (and I have not read all the Discworld books, so I don’t know everything that’s been revealed) Vetinari has far fewer vices than Her Majesty, and is far more tightly wound personally. Still, he does visit Wuffles’ grave regularly, so there is a human being inside there. Also, he does allow himself to positively *enjoy* the role of despot when it’s appropriate.
Fatuncle - Mucho thanx!
Jean - Lady Bethela is, indeed, long-suffering. A sensible, quiet and also ferociously loyal individual, she has been witness to some of the most unbelievable rows in Kivalian history. Some personal, some about land or policy, some about combinations of sex, love and all the above at once. Some culminating in violence or emprisonment and some in passionate rapproachment and celebration. And through it all, she’s the one who makes sure all the T’s are crossed and I’s dotted, all the service arranged, all the broken crockery cleaned up, the blood wiped off and all the appropriate folk at just below her level paid off. And she has no lines in this scene.
Lictre - Can’t fully comment, except that he’s definitely scared. Of a lot of stuff.
InCestusWeTrust - Maldik’s murders are all problematic, unless they can be handled by someone else and he never has to think about them.
I’ll check out the HP fan fic,(it’s bookmarked) but right now all my spare reading time is for “Making Money,” and I barely have time to make headway on that.
Sleepinin - She seriously walks the walk that she talks, and walks it well.
SamuraiDemonPuppy - Yes, see the above response to Jean for a description of Lady Bethela. And, no, that is one but not Yanora’s biggest disappointment in Maldik.
ICEKAT - Both “stanch” and “staunch” are correct, as Retiarius points out below.
Lora - I wasn’t going purely for “exasperated,” but it works. Watch tomorrow’s update.
TB - Mainly because he won’t be the one doing the actual leading. It isn’t his little plot, he only thinks it is.
Retiarius - Thanks!
Elfguy - Ah, wheels within wheels …
OddCodicologist - Oh, it gets even more fun than that. Just wait and see.
MaxBigFoot - Well, the Heiropolis, which is in charge of everybody’s souls, says that the war was necessary to halt the spread of Draconian heresy. The aristocracy had become bored with fighting among themselves, and with the decades of general peace needed somebody to kill. The Draconians had definitely split with the established church, and there were accounts of martyrdom and property being siezed by the Draconians from loyal Kivalians, atrocities, rapes, human sacrifice, etc. Some of the tales may even be true, or most of them. It’s a long ways away and hard to tell, and the average man doesn’t know or care. He just goes where the king and the Heirophant tells him to. What the Erogenians, and therefore Zona and we, know about Gudik is that he’s a decent king from their perspective. Very physical, a good fighter and as honest as a Kivalian king can be - which is not up to Erogenian standards, but they make allowances as long as all his dealings with Erogenia are straightforward. Zona and Gudik get along on a personal level very well. Gudik can actually almost keep up with her in certain sports and activities, which endears him to her.
Lictre - Well, so far no one has brought news of his death, though Yanora anticipates that an attempt, at least, is forthcoming.
tricksterson - That’s who was the model, though at this point, they’ve now morphed into their own creatures, which is cool.
Lyra - Yes! NO cardboard characters! haha!!!!
ICWT -
June 14th, 2010 at 2:19 pm
Nope! She’s SPARTA!
Also, “Whom Shall We Murder Today And Of Our Murders What Shall We Say?”
I know you’re hiding small bits of text in the comics, but you might wanna’ hide them slightly better.
June 14th, 2010 at 3:51 pm
Comes to show , no matter how old you are your mama can bitch slap you better than anybody. Nuff said
June 15th, 2010 at 8:57 am
@JED - This is one of the longer and best-written HP fanfics (25 chapters and growing and over 4.500 reviews), fortunately, it benefits well from a week or two of cogitation between chapter readings. Just a short sample from chapter 9:
“And talk about your foregone conclusions. Harry didn’t really see why Hermione had been so tense about it. In what weird alternative universe would that girl not be Sorted into Ravenclaw? If Hermione Granger didn’t go to Ravenclaw then there was no good reason for Ravenclaw House to exist.
Hermione arrived at the Ravenclaw table and got a dutiful cheer; Harry wondered whether the cheer would have been louder, or quieter, if they’d had any idea just what level of competition they’d welcomed to their table. Harry knew pi out to 3.141592 because accuracy to one part in a million was enough for most practical purposes. Hermione knew one hundred digits of pi because that was how many digits had been printed in the back of her math textbook.
Neville Longbottom went to Hufflepuff, Harry was glad to see. If that House really did contain the loyalty and camaraderie it was supposed to exemplify, then a Houseful of reliable friends would do Neville a whole world of good. Smart kids in Ravenclaw, evil kids in Slytherin, wannabe heroes in Gryffindor, and everyone who does the actual work in Hufflepuff.”

Well, I bookmarked it, but I dare not start reading it until I have cleaned up my apartment. Last time someone send me a great long fanfic I was lost for almost two weeks.
(It had a sequel).
