OMG, total 2nd MILF attack! You go, Mentl, you studmuffin, you! *bwahahahaing in delight*

Damn! even when Mentl’s trying not to use magick…

    OH!

    I get it.

Mentl, even with all the focusing, wanted to still make the crowd happy and feed keep the mood going. (We saw the couples growing closer with the song)

He probably also wants to impress ‘ma’ a little bit. I would. If only by showing control.

Still, for his first try and a NON-magickal performance post awakening/ post awareness, he did pretty good.

You know, now that I go back and look, that IS a look of concern on the Priestess’ face on the last page. Nice work as always JED, you consistently keep us guessing.

  4. T'Renn
    May 19th, 2010 at 1:55 am

Man, he charmed one of the most suspicious in the audience, not without trying, but trying NOT to try. But, as Karna said, he is untrained, so I suspect he couldn’t completely turn it off.

Well, at least he did tone it down enough that he doesn’t need to do a “Hard Day’s Night” sort of escape from a horde of Erogenian fangirls. ;-)

  5. The MacNut
    May 19th, 2010 at 2:04 am

Whoa, Mentl almost had ANOTHER queen try to bed him. And yeah, if Ipola had asked, we mighta seen a death duel between mom & daughter (darn!).

Interesting that sharing a man between them didn’t work very well last time either. I guess some lines are just not meant to be crossed, even in Erogenia.

  6. Ed
    May 19th, 2010 at 2:05 am

Says something about Mentl’s power level that it still leaks thru - but also, the priestess is not accusing him of trying to do anything - seems toi think he is being honest, not trying to influence people thru magic.

But you know what? asking your daughter to share a guy - creepy….

  7. The MacNut
    May 19th, 2010 at 2:07 am

But yeah, Mentl is definitely going to need training, and SOON. He probably shouldn’t sing again until he gets that training-after all, who wants to bet that Ipola and Zona are the only women in that hall who want to jump his bones?

  8. The Old Hack
    May 19th, 2010 at 2:09 am

Interesting. I doubt the priestess means that Mentl is dangerous as in having ill intent ; rather, I think she believes it is simply through him not being master of his power yet. I am going to make a wild guess here: instead of trying to turn anyone against Mentl, she will attempt to see to it that Mentl receives some proper tutoring and instruction.

  9. Jim Farris
    May 19th, 2010 at 3:04 am

“Like an earthquake, in each of your fists.”

That kind of dangerous. The “doesn’t really know what he’s doing” kind of dangerous.

  10. Nevaron
    May 19th, 2010 at 3:10 am

And Mentl gets that he’s dangerous… this is not going to be easy for him, something that was always just a comfort has turned dangerous now. Have to wish him well on his journey, and bravo to JED for such a twist.

  11. LorannaPyrel
    May 19th, 2010 at 3:31 am

While the missed chance to see Zona and Ipola share a man causes much sorrow and pain in my twisted - or was that twisty? - heart, I can agree that the priestess has a point. Or five. ^_^

Some times being Queen and your daughter being your Champion … well, it makes things complicated, no? Plus, I think the two of them could probably snap even Arnold Schwarzenegger in two.

Nice way to make a very cool song a point of narrative tension, too.

    Cheers,

    Loranna

I hate to say it (no i dont) BUT I WAS RIGHT. See i was not paranoid after all :) Now all i have to do is convince you all of the treat of the invasion of the miniature giant space hamsters. Oh, by the way; nice page JED.

  13. Jean
    May 19th, 2010 at 5:49 am

*munch munch…munch…gulp* Umm…miniature giant space hamsters? Damn, I thought these were giant miniature space gerbils–so sorry!

…Whaaat? They were covered in cheese! (I think they were trying to invade the Girl Genius webcomic by tunneling up and over from this site, when I ran across ‘em…)

  14. Blue
    May 19th, 2010 at 6:09 am

Very cool as always… One question though; what happened to the strings on the lyre the guy that looks like Khan is holding?

  15. Soulworker
    May 19th, 2010 at 6:32 am

In the Bio of a Space Tyrant series Piers Anthony often used the phrase between characters “Show me your power”. It was meant both as a challengen and as a statement of respect…I think that Mentl did just that in a very controlled manner…and still blew the queen and priestess away with his abilities….On a separate note…Does anyone else suspect that the individual Zona and her mother “shared” was our sad guard who left the dance to take another guard duty? Just a thought…

  16. mistressnyx
    May 19th, 2010 at 7:04 am

well as to the strings on the lyre i’m guessing it probably got unstrung while not in use… historically they didnt use things like nylon or steel for strings they used gut for strings for things like bows and instruments like lyres etc… things like that were NOT always stored strung… if left strung it was more likely that the strings could rot or get damaged..

oh and i love that we got such a complete page so early in the week…. THANKS…. lol.. i’m a bit spoiled i guess by the fact that i got intro’d to webcomics by reading one that updates daily with new ones… except that one is smaller stuff than this each time it updates…

  19. Lora
    May 19th, 2010 at 7:20 am

Mistrel to mistrel: “Oh, I made this when I was 21 out of a tree found on the hillside to the Moon Tribe.” “Well, Zona found this when we met. A mistrel had been killed by urrts, so I took the lute with me.”

He he he. Ipola is totally under Mentl’s charm now. All three women in the family likes him now. Guess Karna will just have to start training Mentl the first thing tomorrow. :)

  20. LurkerAbove
    May 19th, 2010 at 7:54 am

Nice - it looks now as if we are going to get some more of the backstory,
as in Vito and the magic book that brought Mentl into this world.

Also, that helmet on top of the fireplace gets me curious:
since page 360, it has changed position, twice :-)

  21. GhostEraser
    May 19th, 2010 at 8:17 am

Yes, Mentl’s way too powerful to go untrained… But who can train him? No one so far has his special abilities. Like a boxer training a swimmer for the Olympics?

  22. Wolfgang
    May 19th, 2010 at 8:52 am

Well, it’s not so much an issue of abilities as simple control.

  23. Lebbrin
    May 19th, 2010 at 8:55 am

Aww, Soulworker beat me to it. The first name in my mind when the priestess mentioned ‘The last time’ was Rannik. Now THAT should be a tale.

    Great/Fantastic/WOW as always JED.

  24. AdamZero
    May 19th, 2010 at 8:57 am

First thing after a nice warm brew and breakfast in bed with Zona, you mean, Lora

And old hack, it’s in fact MORE dangerous for someone to be good and unintentionally/unknowingly be causing damage, cause you can just go in swords aloft and spells aflame.

  25. Black Ethel
    May 19th, 2010 at 9:11 am

I knew something was going to happen…
I hope that when the priestess said he was dangerous, that she doesn’t turn Ipola or the other tribe members against Mentl. Instead, they should see him as a powerful asset, take him under their wing, and get him into proper training.

Thanks for the good storyline, JED.

  26. Karyl
    May 19th, 2010 at 10:23 am

Had to wait until today to see this and as always, well worth the wait! I too am surprised that Ipola is thinking about trying to bed Mentl, glad the priestess called her out on it. I agree it might have been Rannik who got the double treatment to a bad end last time.

  27. Raoul
    May 19th, 2010 at 10:42 am

Holy Shamalyan! Or, to put it more plainly, “WhataTWIST!” This is, I hope, a good thing. Mentl needs training—despite his raw power, I suspect any magick user with half his power (or less) and the correct level of skill could eat him alive, which is why Tula did the mage-battle in that last conflict. Hopefully, too, he’ll take to it easily—I’ve a feeling time is not something that’s in abundance right now.

  28. Hwyla
    May 19th, 2010 at 10:58 am

Yeah - I think Karna is going to have a little talk with Tula tomorrow - to discuss who might be the better one to start him on some beginning ‘control’ exercises. And ask why Tula hasn’t started him already? I’m sure there are meditations that will help.

Regarding the little DragonLyre - I agree that it might already be de-stringed - but I think it just as likely that we just can not see the strings. They were barely visible in close-up before and the singer is much further away from us now. I think they are just much thinner strings than the ones on Mentl’s lute.

I just cannot see the Lyre player being able to de-string while Mentl was playing. Everyone else was too enchanted, why wouldn’t he be as well? I think all his focus would have been on Mentl’s song.

  29. Hwyla
    May 19th, 2010 at 11:02 am

Also - JED - wanted to thank you for changing the color of the secret caption. MUCH easier to read now! Pawn Shop? That can’t really be the DragonLyre could it? But might be a safer lie for the Lute than took it off a dead guy. Between that and the story of the magic book, Mentl’s going to get a rep for ripping off dead guys.

  30. JE Draft
    May 19th, 2010 at 11:48 am

Jean - Oh, get over yourself! And welcome home. :)

AdamZero - Maybe it’s not quite so simple - or complex - as that? And yes, at least he didn’t melt rocks. :)

TheLastGarou - Yes, it most certainly was. She was the only one in the room who was totally aware and on guard at that moment.

T’Renn - Now THAT would be a funny scene!

The MacNut - Actually, it worked a little TOO well, but then that’s back story that will be filled out in time.

Ed - It’s not yet clear what Karna’s definition of “dangerous” includes, specifically. Still, as we’ve seen, she obviously ain’t wrong.

The Old Hack - We’ll see how well that goes, though not quite yet.

    Jim Farris - Exactilioso.

Nevaron - Heh. Thought that would get a little reaction.

LorannaPyrel - Well, as Karna realized, it was a missed chance to step in a social and emotional beartrap. And besides, as warnie and a couple others pointed out, it was getting a little TOO lovie-dovey! Gonna start mixing things up a bit, here.

Gremalkin - “Yes, you’re very smart. Now, shut up.” ;) And, thanks!

Blue - Nothing, other than that the model’s strings are so fine - meant for larger scale renders, and in this scene they just disappeared. I don’t think it’s a bad I dea for me to just draw some in for effect tonight.

Soulworker - Yeah, he’s impressive. As for the long-ago “sharing” event referred to, those who have “The Three Challenges Of Zona” know who it was. Still available for a ten dollah donation. BUT, it’s not automatic. You have to ask for it, cause it’s like, porn. If you’ve given a donation in the past and are interested in it, just drop me a line.

mistressnyx - Nope - strings are just too far away. And yes, we have all sorts of schedules and styles and formats in the web comic community. I’m thinking of changing up the format a bit, though maybe not. Certainly not soon.

Lora - Rock musicians and bards are ALWAYS popular with the gals. If they weren’t, most of them would starve to death. What do you call a musician without a girlfriend? “Homeless.”

LurkerAbove - Yes, you will. A bitsy bit at a time. And the Helmet is actually a watch on a Roman soldier. :) what that means is, it’s a continuity glitch that I didn’t catch, and do not feel like going back and re-rendering two pages to undo. I didn’t notice that it had moved until I was rendering today’s page. And I said “screw it.”

Ghosteraser - Well, someone has to! He can’t just go around melting rock and running away from crouds of beautifull random gals, can he?

Wolfgang - How do you get to Carnegie Hall? :)

Lebbrin - I think you have the book, don’t you?

Black Ethel - That is the million dinar question, eh? And you’re very very welcome.

Karyl - Actually, Her Majesty was *not* thinking, and there’s the problem.

Raoul - Is that another “Robot Chicken” joke?! BAM! TWO pop culture references in one! And yes, at this point, Tula would take him to school in half a round. Give him some time, though, to grow into himself a bit.

Hwyla - You’re right about the strings - see above. And I am happy to make it a little easier to see, for your sake at least - though it was just a joke, as the marginals always are. ;) And yeah, Mentl is a bit of a battlefield corby, huh, if you want to look at it that way. On the other hand, the book at least is his legacy, as Vito would tell you.

  31. firegoat
    May 19th, 2010 at 11:56 am

Ipola, huh? What’s Mentl gonna do for an encore, “Mrs. Robinson”? :P

  32. Kosine
    May 19th, 2010 at 1:15 pm

Y’know what really gets me about this page? The way the (harpist… lyr…est? -ist? Ah, screw it:) bard from a couple pages ago is subtly throwing Mentl the horns with his off hands. XD

Also, speaking of, does anyone else think that perhaps the bard was modeled off of someone famous or something? He’s got this kind of distinguished shape to his face, so I keep on thinking he’s supposed to be an analogue of a celebrity in our world.

  33. Elfguy
    May 19th, 2010 at 6:03 pm

I think that differences between Erigonian women should be settled by a method that involves a large arena full of Jello.

  34. Lictre
    May 19th, 2010 at 6:34 pm

Ah, Mentl. Ya should have stayed purely instrumental. Classical Gas, by Mason Williams, Silk and Steel, by Savatage… Probably any number of good pure instrumental pieces you could have played to mellow the party out.

  35. Black Ethel
    May 19th, 2010 at 8:51 pm

Yes Kosine…I see it! Devil horns! Hey JED, is that for our beloved, and recently departed Dio? Hope so…I already miss him terribly.

And the bard kinda looks like a white haired Ron Wood. Just sayin’…

  36. JR
    May 19th, 2010 at 10:21 pm

The bard look-a-like? How ’bout Rod Stewart…

  37. Lebbrin
    May 19th, 2010 at 10:36 pm

@JED yes, I have the book. Got kind of frustrated paging up and down for the chapter jumps so didn’t finish. Hmm, I’ve always wanted practice adding links in PDF. Might give it a go. If I get it down. I’ll send it to you.

  38. JE Draft
    May 20th, 2010 at 1:22 pm

    Firegoat - Doo-de-doo-doo-doo … ;)

Kosine - It was just a conversational gesture, not consciously planned. And actually, all I was thinking of while morphing him was “”Generic Rock Star,” no one in particular.

Elfguy - We’ll take it under advisement.

Lictre - Yeah, but then it would have been all cutesy and boring, wouldn’t it? :)

Black Ethel - Sorry, as I said, just kind of messing around.

JR - Close, yeah, but better looking.

Lebbrin - I always just used the search function for the paragraph number. Even when I was writing it, back in the Pleistocene.

    …And Dangerous.

    Your argument is invalid.

  43. Greencheese
    May 21st, 2010 at 2:11 pm

He could certainly have done alot worse. Imagine Sons of Odin by Manowar. Though I don’t know if that’s his kind of music, so perhaps we won’t have to worry.

  44. Kaila
    May 26th, 2010 at 9:42 am

Question: If the music was written for a six-string guitar, or even a twelve-string for that matter, does Mentl just effortlessly rearrange the music in his head as he goes along? If so, I am in awe of his musical ability. Or does he just cheat and tune the bottom six strings to standard?
