It’s truly something to read this while listening to Kathy’s Song. I find it to be a powerful experience…so much so that I had to do it twice, just to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Thank you John. Thank you very much.
May 14th, 2010 at 9:48 pm
beautiful. simply beautiful. thank you.
May 14th, 2010 at 10:11 pm
WOW! Ipola and her doubts, and the high priestess too if I don’t miss that expression, and the others just enjoying the song. It appears that Mentl has managed a song without any Majick. Now to see if Ipola believes it…
Great as always JED! Thanks for another well done page…
May 14th, 2010 at 10:17 pm
That was both wonderful and powerful. It was magic, but the magic of love, not force. One of your very best yet! Thank you
May 14th, 2010 at 10:19 pm
Arrgh! double post again. Oz_in_Exile had a great idea. Just went through the last 2 pages with the audio playing. Even better. Excellent JED!
May 14th, 2010 at 10:54 pm
worth being up late just to see this!
May 14th, 2010 at 10:56 pm
Oz_in_Exile was right, this page must be read with Kathy’s Song playing. It’s great on its own, but so much better with the music playing.
May 14th, 2010 at 11:04 pm
I heartily agree with music and words and pics together.
Just absolutely stunning!
May 14th, 2010 at 11:04 pm
ummm i dunno looks in this one like it might be raining now… that doesnt seem to me like he sang without ANY magic…….
May 14th, 2010 at 11:16 pm
hmmm lets see… now you guys can see me… lol… along with my comment hopefully (though my id is changed a bit from my first..)
May 14th, 2010 at 11:17 pm
It looks like its raining in this page i’d like to point out to you guys… i dont think he quite managed to sing without ANY magic
May 14th, 2010 at 11:27 pm
I read this all the time, but don’t say it enough. Thank you.
May 14th, 2010 at 11:54 pm
It’s interesting to watch it evolve from a song into a love song, as he puts more and more emphasis on ‘you’.
May 14th, 2010 at 11:54 pm
And the question of whether webcomics can count as art is now answered.
May 15th, 2010 at 1:34 am
Agreed calisto, agreed. This is one beautiful page here. And the series as a whole, just wonderful!
May 15th, 2010 at 1:44 am
Didn’t know this song..what would I do without Youtube.
May 15th, 2010 at 2:47 am
Wow.
Make a poster otta that one will you?
May 15th, 2010 at 3:39 am
I’m a little worried about the “you”s myself, @Weremensh. Call me paranoid, but given how much he cares about Zona, I don’t think Mentl could keep from projecting ANY magick into the song. Also, given that the words are starting to glow… *shrug*
May 15th, 2010 at 5:13 am
Hey TheLastGarou, you know what? Your paranoid !
But then again so am i, and this seems a little to fishy.
But not to worry TheLastGarou, being paranoid can be a good thing, yest look at this page: [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ProperlyParanoid]
Oh and to JED; great page as allways, you realy captured the mood.
May 15th, 2010 at 7:24 am
awwww….*sniff*.
May 15th, 2010 at 8:11 am
I think the rain might be more simbolic then actually a weather pattern. More connected to Zona’s tears as she listens to the song. And I think their might be a little magic flowing in simply because of the Mentals love for Zona. But it seems to me if you go by the wording of the song its more likely to hit him then anyone else. If magic is there its just bounding him tighter to her.
May 15th, 2010 at 9:41 am
I have to go with Zona here. Absolutely gorgeous, John. Thank you.
May 15th, 2010 at 9:58 am
hmmm when i first saw the beginnings of the lyrics was worried because of the naming of a location… of traveling to england, in the previous pages lyrics, thinking it might end up transporting him or them or someone there… …
May 15th, 2010 at 10:55 am
I like how this song is getting the couples to cuddle. xD
May 15th, 2010 at 10:58 am
Also look at the lyrics the word you seems to be highlighted or it could be my caffeine fueled mind.
May 15th, 2010 at 12:02 pm
wonderful page JE, i’d have to agree with hearing the song whilst reading, though i;m probably extra moved due to my situation at the present, nevertheless, “perfect art” is what this can be called, nothing more, nothing less.
May 15th, 2010 at 2:04 pm
D’awww. It’s pretty, and the words gain more meaning the more I examine the way Mentl and Zona look at each other.
But LastGarou is not paranoid - all art is deliberate, or so I’ve been told, and JED has quite deliberately highlighted each instance of ‘YOU’ in the song. And as we all know, glowing song words MEAN magic in this comic.
What kind of magic, we won’t know for maybe a week or so, but regardless, Ippola looks both a little less suspicious and a lot more intrigued.
That single tear of Zona’s is quite the touch, JED. Nicely done.
May 15th, 2010 at 2:04 pm
Superb, thank you.
May 15th, 2010 at 3:20 pm
Wow. Just - Wow. Hellalump in throat. Thank You, Jed; Thank you.
May 15th, 2010 at 4:22 pm
Excellent point @Tentagil.
Anyway, gorgeous as always JED.
May 15th, 2010 at 4:47 pm
Wow. If you are like me and have never heard Kathy’s Song (or if I have, it’s been so long ago that I have forgotten it), you almost have to listen to the song to even have an idea of what is happening here.
May 16th, 2010 at 7:30 am
Aw, this is so cute. I think people like Mentl’s singing.
May 16th, 2010 at 11:36 am
woohoo! Great page! I don’t think Ipola is having doubts, I think the song is just making her consider Mentl fully. I suspect her judgement will be sound
May 16th, 2010 at 12:54 pm
Hmm, the shaman is also taking what appears to be a “deeper” look at Mentyl, like he’s appraising if he’s casting a spell on them all. I believe the Queen is thinking, “hmmm, My daughter seems truly happy and content for the first time in a long time. It doesn’t seem to be a magical spell this man has woven about her, but the more powerful one of Love. Maybe I would have o have him killed after all.”
May 16th, 2010 at 12:55 pm
rather she’s thinking “I won’t have to have him killed after all”
May 16th, 2010 at 3:31 pm
WOW! i just listened to the youtube clip of Kathy’s song. I can’t believe I never heard it before. I must have just not the noticed the lyrics. Great job! That tune is more perfect than anything else I could think of.
May 16th, 2010 at 4:13 pm
enuff mush on with the action.
May 16th, 2010 at 6:01 pm
MissNyx I think that the rain is just an image in the background and not real rain. JE can correct me if I’m wrong.
May 16th, 2010 at 6:20 pm
We’ll see soon enough. And warnie, please, as a long time rpg (table top) player, I love those moments when the characters get to rest and heal up. I hated GMs who never let us rp those… and, with an angry god, evil priests, heartless monsters, and idiot princes running about… I think you can be sure, the action will heat up again soon
Once more, bravo!
May 16th, 2010 at 7:11 pm
JED, I’ve read Zona through, maybe 5 times, never felt a need to comment until this page. Always appreciated your work, just never had a need to shout about it, you know? This page, and the use of this song, changes that. You have my respect. - Elihion Longtoes (of the Bree Longtoes).
May 16th, 2010 at 7:20 pm
Just a side note here, in my >humble?step off soapbox<
May 16th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
oops html out of cheese error…
What I meant to write was In my humble opinion there was NO chance of it raining unless mentl wanted to make it rain, it is all about intent after all. The rain is just a symbol of, well a lot of different things, transience one of them. The same goes for the England reference no intent = no chance of going anywhere besides the fact that that would be a MAJOR piece of magic. I don’t mean that he perhaps couldn’t do it just that it would have to be a concerted effort.
*step off soapbox*
May 17th, 2010 at 11:19 am
Even if Mentl sang it completely without intent, as any listener in our world knows, there’s more than one kind of enchantment. The departure from a skald’s form of music, to something like Paul Simon, is not a small leap in structure, purpose - or the way it affects listeners. It’s a bigger leap than playing “johnny B Goode” near the end of Back to the Future. This one will pack a wallop.
Second, listening to the song must make one wonder just who has enchanted whom here.
May 17th, 2010 at 1:30 pm
Oz_In_Exile - You’re very welcome. Not sure what I’m gonna do for the book - maybe publish an appendix in the back?
Illias - You’re very welcome, and thank you for reading.
Lebbrin - You’ll see whether there was magick or not tomorrow.
Wookie - All love is magick - or just “chemicals in your brain,” as a reductionist friend of mine used to say.
Karyl - Glad you think so, given how many times I stay up late to update.
Grey - That’s how I wrote it, too.
MistressNyx - It’s not really raining outside, it’s only raining in the song. Sort of impressionistic-like imagery.
Captain Marsupial - Your welcome. Wait until you get my bill.
Weremensh - It’s an introspective bit of poetry that has an evolution of focus until the final lines, which are allllll about the girl.
calisto - i’m flattered. But all good comics are art, no matter what their style. Anyone who doubts that is a critic, and so all their opinions need to be taken with a grain of salt. Perhaps this is what inspired Karl Kerschl to make this one:
http://www.abominable.cc/2010/05/12/consider-the-critics-of-the-field/
Nevaron - the whole thing really must be taken as a whole, which I lament it usually isn’t. I’m very very long form, I see now, because I’m heavily influenced by the trends in TV and comics over the past ten or fifteen years. But I can still only do two pages a week! *sigh*
b003 - You’d have to go to the record store and ask the nerd behind the counter for help …
Dragonson - I will take it under advisement, as soon as I begin publishing posters.
TheLastGarou - “shrug” indeed. Ye shall see, and soon.
Gremalkin - I captured it, and now because it’s love, I’m supposed to set it free to see if it comes back? Or something.
ICWT - There, there …
NakhtiChaos - Well … wouldn’t you? And yes, they’re highlighted.
ICEKAT - I relish the compliment, but I do not believe in the notion of perfection, much less that it is at all attainable by my silly story. Nonetheless, thank you so much.
Kosine - Thanks. And yeah, yeah, `cause a tear is like a raindrop, right? And I thought - “whoa!” and then I said, “Oh, yeah!” and then I said - “Aw, man!” and then I was all like - “Okay!!” =D
Minclarion - No, thank you.
Wolf - Oh, just wait.
Hugh - Well, see, this is me introducing you to the classics and furthering your very necessary education.
Lora - True, very true.
Sockpuppet - Her Majesty’s judgement is renowned for being sound.
Stormhawk - That is Karna the high priestess, and yes, she’s looking with a bit of a critical eye.
Bilbo - Certainly more perfect than anything I could think of, either. Glad Rhymin’ Simon did it for us.
warnie - Oh, there’s a distinct shift in gears on its way soon. But bide patiently, my friend, and you shall see.
Cherub - Most definitely quite correct!
Elihion - Thank you. As always, at your service and your family’s.
Joe - Since the whole idea of enchantment comes from the actual effect of chanting and music on both the listener and the misician, I’m in agreement with you. As to who’s enchanting whom? Well …
May 17th, 2010 at 3:37 pm
As I said on the previous page, this is a favourite song, and I think JE has used it really well here, the images are a great fit.
Of course, as many english will tell you, rain and England are close to being synonyms anyway.
May 17th, 2010 at 5:10 pm
OMG I’M HOOOOOOME!!! *MWAHMWAHMWAHs her desk…flops, snores…wakes up again* Okay, when’s the next update? 8D
May 17th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
I love this bit, it has been very important for their relationship and the Tribe’s opinion of Mentl. I am missing the action though and looking forward to a bit of a return to that. I love Mentl’s combat magic thus far.
May 17th, 2010 at 8:49 pm
Oh yes, and JED I am quite jealous of your knowledge of music, several of the songs thus far I have not recognized. My parents simply were not big music fans and I mostly grew up without it. I love it, but my knowledge of such things is far from yours-unfortunately for me. Thank you for exposing me to such a musical story.
May 18th, 2010 at 2:46 am
I’ll second the Professor’s last comment. As for long form, thats fine man, I just haven’t been commenting up to now, and this was one beautiful bit of work. I hope things go well for you man, so you can keep this up! Luck to you.
May 18th, 2010 at 11:50 am
I’ll third the Professor’s last comment. Let me tell ya, learning about “Saturday Night’s All Right (For Fighting)” has made me a bit more popular during karaoke nights!
May 18th, 2010 at 4:29 pm
@Addup2
Yes, and from what I’ve heard, when Englishmen hear the phrase “Global Warming” the first thought to go through their mind is “Yes, please. Maybe we could start making decent wine again like we did before the mini ice age!”
May 18th, 2010 at 6:41 pm
And if(when) we get a new ice age, Dokkerland may become visible, dry land again, and England will then cease to be an island.
Of course that is not likely to happen in our lifetimes… we first need to go through the warning cycle.
May 18th, 2010 at 6:55 pm
Very powerful panel.
Thanks.
It´s like the song has been written just for it.
