Yay! I’ve been waiting for Mentl to sing again. Those are my favorite scenes. and Zona by firelight. And Tula. And the ghost guy. And Zona and Mentl talking or teasing or anything. And the cats. I’ll stop now.

Oh this should be interesting…me thinks that Vito is wanting Michael/Mentl to impress the queen with his particular type of magic…Talk about winning over the hearts and minds…(and other) =D

The lute is magical! It appeareth without being summoned. First fashioned by a bard that while extremely magical was also extremely absent minded. After locking herself out of the house for the 13 time in as many days she made a lute that she could always entertain herself with no matter how many locked doors and walls were between her and it.

(Yeah I don’t know what to tell you folks, I felt extremely silly after reading this page.)

    Yay, lute-iness strikes Mentl!

  5. Karyl

Oh, hate to say, the red type in between frames eludes me against that dark background–brighter red, please?

    May 8th, 2010 at 6:01 pm

    Aah, the plot thickens.

Love Ipola´s expression. Somewhere between reminiscence and mild exasperation. At least that´s what I´m reading into it.

Thankfully you´re posting more often again, can´t wait to find out who really put the lute there. Though I´m betting on Vito too.

Karyl, thank you! I was hoping it wasn’t just me! JOHN - a little more contrast please?

Mentl singing again? UH OH!!! 8-O

  9. Lebbrin
    May 8th, 2010 at 6:34 pm

My vote is it’s Vito. Hopefully Mentl remembers that he can sing without adding a lot of ‘Intent’ to the song and thus keep the Magik down. This should be interesting.

In between the panels, it says “Lift up your hearts and sing me a song that was a hit before your mother was born.”

  11. LurkerAbove
    May 8th, 2010 at 7:16 pm

Maybe the lute itself is magical, and Vito is not involved.

BTW, I was looking for the first appearance of the lute, and couldn’t find out,
because there is a gap in the archive: chapter 2 ends with page 14,
and chapter 3 starts with page 22.

  12. Lebbrin
    May 8th, 2010 at 7:28 pm

@LurkerAbove, Yeah I’ve seen those gaps. What you have to do is start on page 14 and click next. You’ll get the pages in between. It happens at least one other place in the archive that I know of. (I just can’t remember where…)

  13. Elizabeth
    May 8th, 2010 at 7:49 pm

Good song for Mother’s Day. “Let’s all get up and dance to a song that was a hit before your mother was born…” Mom loves this song, except for the line “Even though she was born such a long, long time ago”. Beatles forever.

I am looking forward to Mentl singing again. For some reason I want him to do something from Eurythmics. Probably because he said Zona had a voice like Annie Lennox, who is one of my all-time favourite singers.

Every time you bring music into the story, I feel the impact in an almost physical manner. The setting seems to be less intense than when it’s happened before, but somehow I think you’ll pull out the stops anyway.

    As always..

Or remembrance OF mild exasperation …

Magical lute -wants- to be played!

  18. Keith Arnold
    May 8th, 2010 at 10:21 pm

I’m betting against Vito. Were I a betting man, I’d have money on Ipola. She is wise enough to know how the magic works, and wants to see it.

She’s protecting her daughter, and making sure what’s in Zona’s heart is love, and not enchantment.

  19. Inquisitive Raven
    May 8th, 2010 at 11:00 pm

Not Ipola. Take a good look at the second panel. Kinda reminds one of what happened when Mentl was asked to play at court in Normos.

I suppose Vito’s possible, but it’s also possible that it’s responding to Mentl’s wishes, and not necessarily conscious ones.

  20. Lictre
    May 8th, 2010 at 11:10 pm

It would be nice were Mentl to just play something beautiful and instrumental. Perhaps Mason William’s “Classical Gas”.

He’s been having some concerns about out of control spellcasting, so something with no words should be safe enough.

    “Hotel California” is RIGHT out!

  21. Kamatu
    May 8th, 2010 at 11:23 pm

Think mild little feel good tune. Or something so explosive that Her Majesty gets to lay the law down to Mentl.

BTW, Yatta the Energizer Bunny and his three girls haven’t been in sight lately, have they?

  22. Ted
    May 9th, 2010 at 1:10 am

Hmm, I was just re-reading the archives and my mind seems to be playing tricks on me. Wasn’t there a page where one of the Erogenians was bragging to Tula (I think) about Yatta-ta’s remarkable ahem, stamina? And then one where Yatta-ta is asking Mentl if Erogenians ever lie? Or am I hallucinating?

  23. Kevin

You might mean the vote incentive from not to long ago. It was a conversation between Zona and her cousin I think.

  24. SamuraiDemonPuppy
    May 9th, 2010 at 1:26 am

Seconding Black Ethel: my first thought was Uh Ohhhh.

@Ted: You were looking at vote incentives. They may be in the freebies now. Timeline-wise, they haven’t happened yet.

  25. Gremalkin
    May 9th, 2010 at 3:00 am

This will be very interesting, Very interesting indeed.
Mua ha ha haaa… Oh sorry, my maniacal laughter is acting up again.

  26. Nimue
    May 9th, 2010 at 3:25 am

I think that the lute comes along with Mentl’s magic, being the closest thing to an electric guitar in that world.

He can’t help doing his thing, can he? :)
But he’ll probably have to control it this time somehow, I guess.

  27. Lora
    May 9th, 2010 at 3:52 am

I love the expressions in this page. They’re all so great. :D Ipola’s look in the first panel, and Mentl’s when Zona gives him his lute. Lol, ‘magickal lute service - brings your lute to you every time.’

  28. MaryLynne
    May 9th, 2010 at 6:11 am

I just realized - the lute is sparkly and ghostly as it appears against the wall in the second panel.

  29. Soulworker
    May 9th, 2010 at 6:56 am

Zona gave Mentl the lute back in chpter 1 (pg. 16) by salvaging it from “a traveling minstrel” who hd been done in by the Urrts. Now if he isn’t summoning it consciously…the top 3 options are 1) It is magical/empathic and is responding tho him on its own, 2) He is actually summonning it unconsciously when he wants to play, or 3) Vito or one of the local gods/goddesses is helping things along a bit…

I haven’t seen any concrete evidence for #1. The second reason has a strong possibility though as the appearance of the lute has occurred when he is in the presence of other musical activities…he may just be being inspired and drawing this instrument to himself…However, being the plot driven person I am…I still think I see Vito hand in this so I am still going with #3

    May 9th, 2010 at 8:48 am

My vote is for Vito, a.k.a. Mr. Ghosty, I hope he and Tula get another chance for an astral romp sometime soon BTW. Vito probably knows that Mom has some concerns about Mentl’s abilities. As Queen she HAS to assess any new potential dangers to her family/loved ones/tribe.
The scenes with Mentl singing are my Fave scenes. Lay one down Daddy-O, it’s time to get groovy with the Moonlight…

  31. Elfguy
    May 9th, 2010 at 9:24 am

Sticking with a song that tells a story would probably be safe; This does appear to be story telling time after all, and so long as Mentyl doesn’t direct the events in the story towards anyone with his intent while singing it shouldn’t hurt anyone…

“Down in Louisiana where the black trees grow, lived a voodoo lady named Marie LeVeau! She had a black cat tooth and a mojo bone, and anyone woulen’t leave her alone she’d go ‘wheeeeeee! Another man done gone!”

  32. Addup2
    May 9th, 2010 at 12:00 pm

I’m even worse than Karyl, until it was mentioned, I wasn’t even aware of the caption. Mind you I can’t read the ones on earlier pages either, just not enough contrast - I presume it’s to stop them detracting from the artwork, so maybe it text could be added to the hover as well as the page number? Other than that, great page, though I’m hoping the lute hasn’t been placed by someone intending mischief.

    May 9th, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Speaking of Annie Lennox — I would love sometime to see Mentl sing “Into the West” from the Return of the King soundtrack, at an appropriate moment in the story.

Fear is in the eye of the beholder, especially when the beholder has a Full can of power thirst in his body.

  37. Raoul
    May 10th, 2010 at 8:25 am

@Hevaess Agreed. The Lute is a trap! (Much as the cake is, well, you know all about cake, I’m sure) Sneaky. sneaky Ipola; setting traps is bound to put a kink in your cha.

So I’m paranoid. Speaking of which, ‘twould be awesome if Mentl cranked that out one day, Randy Rhoads-style. But maaayyybbbeee not right now.

  38. Hugh
    May 10th, 2010 at 9:05 am

I think that Mentl is unconsciously summoning it. Remember back when he talked about after he pawned his guitar, he said that it felt like he had cut off his hand - that he was constantly reaching for it? I think his mind is still reaching for it, but now it shows up.

Should he play or not? I want to see what happens when he does (as he almost has to, eventually), but I have faith in wherever JED wants to take the story. According to a comment on these boards from JED, Mentl has continued to play off-camera during their journey, so he apparently is not TOO shy about it.

If I may interject an alternate theory, the Queen does has mystical powers of her own. Whole talking to birds bit, as I recall. She’s also suspicious regarding Mentl’s music and their… *ahem* side effects. It might not be out of the realm of possibility that she summoned the thing. I might be overthinking this, of course… but the lute vaguely appears in the Queen’s line of sight. Dunno, just a thought.

    May 10th, 2010 at 12:49 pm

Well it’s a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
‘Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I’m trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
    You know the night’s magic
    Seems to whisper and hush
    And all the soft moonlight
Seems to shine in your blush….”

Sing THAT without magickal intent, Mentl, and you’ll be home free in every way.

  41. Elfguy
    May 10th, 2010 at 4:25 pm

I dunno…something rockin’ that really doesn’t suggest any particular spell (Old Time Rock N’ Roll, Eye of the Tiger, or Obla-di Obla-da for example)

  42. dadman
    May 10th, 2010 at 8:16 pm

Too late (and obscure, I suppose) for Mentl to pull out Steve Goodman’s cover of Mike Smith’s “The Dutchman”, eh? There’s a lot to be said, in this situation, for a love song that doesn’t grunt. And it fits the situation of Mentl being in a strange land, and of love that endures for more than physical attraction.

That, and it’s hopelessly sweet and sad.

  43. ICWT
    May 10th, 2010 at 9:05 pm

I’m with Joe, it’s time to mellow out. Everyone needs something soothing to segue to their various therapeutic activities. Nice choice, much as I love Mason Williams, how exactly would John show that being played? not everyone could read the musical notes. I had a roomie once who spent 6 months mastering it on Spanish Guitar, It is far longer than a few panels worth! Same goes for American Pie (and the lyrics would be incompossible with Erogenia. No, the Morrison needed here is Van, not Jim. When will we hear from Jean or John?

  44. ICWT
    May 10th, 2010 at 9:17 pm

BTW, who is the guy with the very full beard at the right of panel 2? I saw him last update too and couldn’t place him. This is obviously a family gathering and since Ipola’s siblings died young, either he or the woman holding him is one of her cousins (conceivably a neice or nephew). It is unlikely not to be a friend, since Karna and the shaman (does he even have a name?) are not present. C’mon JED, weigh in, Anal Retentive minds want to know.

Sorry to be so brief and running a bit silent, but Sunday was all about loading Windows 7. Major improvement, but P8 is still a pig in so many ways. Right now I am rendering Tuesday’s page that will definitely answer some of the speculation.

Also can’t type too well or long, thanks to a large passive aggressive furball in my lap. So I can’t address some what I am grateful is lovely approbation and critique directly just now. Thank you so very much.

I can tell you that you have seen Marr twice before, and I did ID him the last time. He is Her Majesty’s cook, and his lady is, indeed, one of Ipola’s cousins. Karna is here, just not yet shown. Serrin the High Priest is off having his own night time activity.

  46. Ed

The lute? The glittering? Must be Scotty beaming it down…. maybe he’s a fan?

  47. ICWT
    May 11th, 2010 at 8:27 am

@Ed, looks more like Geordi beaming it down, TNG was a little ’sparklier’ god am i having a total nerd-out or what?

@John, thanks for getting back to me so fast. If we’re nominating songs for today’s update, I’ll also put “In the Midnight Hour” in the hat. But I think Joe nailed it first.”I’m a Believer” might work also.

  48. ICWT
    May 11th, 2010 at 9:24 am

@John, just did a quick re-read, I had missed the comment on Marr from 4/20. It makes perfect sense for her to honor the cook after a feast. P.S. kiand of amazing to realize we’ve spent 7 months on one day and we’re all still pumped out here in peanut gallery-land. Awesome indeed.

P.P.S. One of the things I love about following this is when I do get a bee in my bonnet and re-read a long set of archives, I always find a gem i hadn’t spotted before. To wit: p. 337, panel 2b, dead center. Cool.

i concur with most of the above , Ghostie boy has his hand in this one.

It will be interesting to see what the boy produces . i think it will be something fitting the mood as well.
my guess, perhaps a little classic music would do the job. ……Yeah , like that would ever happen.

    as usual good stuf JED

Ghostie boy isn’t shy about his attempts. If he was looking to cause trouble, or had a good reason why he was doing it… you’d have seen at least a glimmer of him by now. This is alllll Mentl!!

  54. Jean
    May 12th, 2010 at 12:03 am

Jean is having troubles with the *blippity* satellite isp on board her cruise ship. She would love to spend more time being timed out, having to relog, cursing, waiting, waiting, waiting some more, and patiently…impatiently…frustratingly waiting for the next screen to load, etc, but she’s off to a comedy in the showroom.

She thinks Mentl’s lute probably appears as a subconscious manifestation of his enchanting abilities/desire to sing, but won’t rule out Vito’s influence. She also thinks it’s uber-cool to be upgraded to the second-best suite in the whole flipping ship (squee!). Most definitely, she is lookign forward to seeing Ipola’s reaction to Mentl singing, and would love to see the two vote incentives inserted into the regular flow of the story (because JED probably will need a vacation to “attempt” to train the lap-growth to let him type every once in a while…or maybe that’s a vacation FROM attempting to teach the fuzzy growth that typing is important, or something).

…Did Jean mention she’s having a wonderful, wonderful time? (other than the uberslow, bloody expensive isp)?
