New Discoveries!

Posted by JED at May 6th, 2010

Just discovered some new (to me) web comics that are just dripping in Awesome Sauce:

Bad Machinery

It’s English public school with a dash of fantasy and weirdness. Excellent writing and superb art.

Lemuria

If you like your barbarian warrior women jumbo-sized and the satire just as thick.

Edmund Finney’s Quest To Find The Meaning Of Life

In a class all by itself.  Laconic, surreal, hilarious.

Space Trawler

A little like Last Starfighter, a little like My Favorite Martian, a little like … uh … just see for yourself.

Sailor Twain

Life on a river boat.  A spooky, smoky, fantasy of nineteenth century America.

Almost forgot  STRING THEORY

Whoa. Serious sci-fi psycho-thriller-pastiche-dramady can’t-really-label-it strip.  Must read.  Frigging brilliant.

Okay, adding a couple more:

DIGGER

A wombat gets lost. And then falls in with the god Ganesh. And there’s ninjas and vampire vegetables.   And it’s amazingly good, I am not kidding.

LACKADAISY

Exquisitely written and drawn historical fantasy about Prohibition Era gangsters.  Oh, and they’re anthro cats.   Has to be seen to be believed.

Only one on the list I read is Bad Machinery. If you like it, you should read it’s two predecessors, Bobbins and Scary Go Round.

I will add astray3 as one that is covered in awesomesauce–so you should read it! I’ll have to check these out too.

Oh, thank you! I lost EFQTFTMOL somewhere once. It really is awesome.

Hey there, I’m the guy who writes and draws Lemuria…thanks for the link, John!

    Cyberskull - I will, but there’s a LOT to read! :)

Karyl - Okay, looks very intriguing. I’ll give it a go.

LN - you’re very welcome. It’s so consistently good, fresh and funny.

Prankster - Are you kidding? The strip is hysterical and the art is terrific. I love the use of Pre-Columbian design for the fantasy world - alongside the various anachronisms and Swordi’s Red Sonya bikini - on top of her Lane Bryant figure! Wonderful. You’ve got me hooked.

Thanks again! If you look up the “real” Lemuria (I didn’t make it up!) you might get a better sense of what I’m going for in terms of the cultural backdrop. (Briefly, it was a hypothesized “lost continent” in the Pacific Ocean, or in some versions in the Indian Ocean…) I’m going to go into some detail about the world-building eventually, for now I’m just focusing on the funny.

Anyway, the important thing is that you’ve, like, doubled my traffic in the last two days, so thanks for that!

Hey thanks for the link! Very kind of you and I’m glad you enjoy Edmund’s wanderings so far.

Spacetrawler - I’ve never been able to get a very close shave with Ocvcam’s Razor unless I was in the shower. :) And you are MOST welcome. I loved Little Dee, and now find I am also being drawn into Spacetrawler hook, line and tractor beam.

Dan Long - How can you not enjoy Edmund? He’s an everyman’s everyman awash in the weirdness of a surrealistic every day. :)

  10. Spacetrawler - 01/03/11 Discussing the Aftermath
