I hope Rannik really does have night duty, otherwise that was a LIE!!!!

A good hearted man that Rannik. A shame he will be alone tonight.

Was that a hint of bitterness there, Rannik? Hmm. Though that does not preclude goodheartedness, of course.

So she’s “through dancing for him”, and he’s “not good enough for some.” Well, not surprising each side should have their own point of view in that disagreement. As the old saying goes, it takes two to tango.

    LOL Rocky Horror reference!

    Neat, a Rocky Horror reference!

  7. InCestusWeTrust

Rannik has shown himself enough of a softie as a boss (remember when he let Boric go off early), that he arranged the duty for this reason. given the wistful look on his face when that segment ended, I think he is genuinely puzzled as to why Zona dropped his copper pledge. After all, as Sheahla confirmed, he is one of the top swordsmen of the Moon tribe.

Am I the only one laughing about Mentl’s line? Are we finally in a post-TimeWarp world? Way to make me feel old, guys. My RHPS claim to fame is I am the only castperson I have ever met who saw it TWICE, a year BEFORE it was a midnighter, in the original daytime release, which lasted less than a week.

Yep, Rannik screwed up bigtime AND doesn’t quite get what he did wrong. I’ll *ahem* ‘put it out here’: Given Zona’s repitition of the theme of ‘the guy who gets made because he can’t beat me’ I’ll say she and Rannik were practicing, or play wrestling, or something, she beat him and in a fit of pique he said some things that were very hurtful to her. He, though, probably thought he was just trying to make her see reality or something, and didn’t realize how deeply his comments cut. They argued, he said more things that cut deeply, and that was it.
Possibly she may have realized, or thought somewhat incorrectly, that he was unable or unwilling to support her in her role as champion. They were both young, after all, and he may have said things he didn’t really mean….or things that he was too immature to realize were not right. I’m betting he told her to act more like a woman, or why can’t you be more like Tula? or even do you have to go off fighting, stay here with me and we’ll be a normal couple, but you’ll have to care for the house.
That’s my take: he said something in a really hurtful way, or said something hurtful, but still thinks he was just telling the truth, and doesn’t understand what was wrong.

  9. Karyl
    May 1st, 2010 at 11:19 am

I’m not sure that he doesn’t have his eye on someone else, maybe even Tula? and he’s never had a chance with her. Perhaps he was with Zona by default and she found that out. In any case, now i have to look up “the Madison”.

  10. Hel
    May 1st, 2010 at 12:06 pm

“Say, do any of you guys know how to Madison?”

That’s a Rocky Horror reference! Well done, well done indeed.

  11. mr_oof
    May 1st, 2010 at 12:15 pm

He stays away because he can’t fathom how/why he’s not #1… Being number 2 in a competitive society means constantly being beaten by #1… and it doesn’t help that the one he’s constantly a loser to, is the one he wants as his mate.

  12. Stormhawk
    May 1st, 2010 at 1:15 pm

“The Madison”, see reference, “Rocky Horror Picture Show”. And yes, I believe he does have night duty. It would be the most sensible, easiest, and least awkward way out of a situation he knew he couldn’t win.
Oh, and do tell me, why does everyone posting wish to place blame on a relationship that didn’t work? Sometimes it happens that the right person isn’t the right person at that time of your life. And when it comes around to when they are, you aren’t the right person for them. Things happen, people change, and we all grow wistful at life’s might have beens.

    Rocky! Rocky! Rah rah rah!

I think I like Borik. I think–and hope–that he’ll actually be able to become friends with Mentl…and hopefully give Mentl (and us) some more background info on Zona.

Now as for that couple on the far right of panel 1, just to the left of Borik’s elbow/bracer…wow, nice hawt pose. Why do I suddenly have the urge to hum the love theme from “Dirty Dancing”?

  14. Jean
    May 1st, 2010 at 3:38 pm

…Maybe he was one of those who wanted to get tied up and spanked?

  15. The Macnut
    May 1st, 2010 at 9:57 pm

@Stormhawk: we want to place blame on a relationship that ended because, 9 times out of 10, it ended because someone screwed up badly-and most likely not for the first time. The screwup could be as simple as choosing someone who obviously wouldn’t make a good partner, to as serious as cheating, alcoholism, or something else like that.

But still, everyone is not romantically compatible with everyone else, and it could have been that Rannik and Zona made better friends or colleagues than lovers. But that wouldn’t explain the bad feelings toward Rannik from Zona that she expressed in her conversation with her mother (it seems like she and Rannik aren’t even friends!)-that implies that Zona thinks Rannik screwed up badly in some form or fashion, and that’s why he’s not her man anymore, and why they don’t even seem to be on speaking terms.

    May 2nd, 2010 at 12:10 am

Ok, I believe that Rannik is a proper Erogenian so he didn’t lie. He had a back up just in case the dance didn’t go his way. However… More importantly… I want to know.. WHAT role did InCestusWeTrust play in RHPS????? Please do tell so I can pull my DVD off the shelf and give you due justice! For you DID say…..

I am the only castperson I have ever met who saw it TWICE, a year BEFORE it was a midnighter

    Huh? Huh? DETAILS! (Please???)

  18. Hwyla
    May 2nd, 2010 at 12:35 am

Hey - is there a ‘caption’ this week? I think there’s one under panel 3 - but I can’t read it. The white speech bubble overpowers it contrast-wise. Can anyone read it? Or am I imagining it’s there?

  19. Darren42
    May 2nd, 2010 at 12:47 am

The caption is very very faint, (I had to zoom in the page to 150% to see it, but it reads “I was dancin with my Darlin to the Tennessee Waltz.”

  20. Ed
    May 2nd, 2010 at 1:00 am

Hey, RHPS WAS a “normal” release before it became a midnight show - Greenwich Village, IIRC, started it. I have a friend who has never seen it, told her I might take her some time…. that it would be a unique experience.

  21. Gremalkin

Running out of compliments as usual :) Great page as always!

  22. Moox
    May 2nd, 2010 at 2:03 am

The caption reads: I was dancin’ with my darlin’ to the Tennessee Waltz…

Well done on this page. Good development of the minor characters. Now that it’s over, I must admit I didn’t enjoy the dancing sequence much at all. I believe I’ve already said my piece on the subject of the sexism/voyeurism overtones, so I won’t belabor my point; However, I am very, VERY glad to get back to the excellent storytelling and well-realized characters of the story.

For here is indeed an excellent bit of storytelling on this page: you neither reveal too little to frustrate, nor too much to lose out on the mysterious quality that makes me hunger for more. I applaud your storytelling skills once again.

Who’s the blonde asking Rannik for a dance?

  24. Varion
    May 2nd, 2010 at 5:42 pm

Hmm, as I recall that caption refers to a song that goes thusly. “I was dancing with my darling, to the Tennessee Walt when my friend stole my sweetheart away.”
A fitting caption for the kind of wistfulness Rannik is showing.

    AdamZero - He does.

dolo-pzora - He does, indeed, seem to be. And I believe he’ll survive. :)

The Old Hack - Yup, it was.

Jim Farris - At least two to tango, yes. :)

Umptyscope - Mentl actually played Riff Raff at the midnight show when he was younger.

    Flipside! - Yeah, I couldn’t resist. :)

InCestusWeTrust - Not to give anything away, but no - he’s not puzzled at all.

aPrincess - It was actually deeds, not words. And that’s all you get for now!

Karyl - It’s a little more complicated than even that. But you’ll find out. As to the Madison, yes, it’s from RHPS. Others have correctly IDed it.

    Hel - Yup. Thanks! :)

mr_oof - That may be part of it. Wait and see.

Stormhawk - Blame shmame. Think how young they both were five years ago.

Jean - Rannik is a good guy, indeed. Doesn’t mean things can’t happen. And no, he was never one of those that wanted to be tied up and spanked. For a specific instance, see “Zona And The Children Of The Moon.”

The Macnut - It was “something else.” :) And it was her convo with a knowing Tula, not Ipola. Just to keep the record straight.

warnie - Jolly good. Heh. You reminded me of that fantasy scene from “Play It Again Sam” by Woody Allen where he imagines the Diane Keaton character’s husband reacting in a civilised manner to the news of their affair:

    “You sent for me?”

    “Yes. Drink?”

    “Thanks.”

    “Scotch?”

    “Fine.”

    “Neat?”

    “Please.”

“Linda and I are in love.”

“Just as well. My doctor says
I have two months to live.”

    “Good. Then you don’t mind?”

    “Not a bit!”

    “Cheers!”

Lebbrin - I’ve seen it numerous times, back in the day, though I was too young to see an R rated film in 1974. :)

Hwyla - Yes, it’s there. See comments below.

    Darren42 - Yes, it does. :)

Ed- I have not been in years. I ought to go sometime soon.

Gremalkin - We alwayts appreciate it. Thanks!

Moox - Well, As I said, can’t please everyone. But glad you’re pleased today, and thank you. :)

Fred - Her name is Ella. She’s a nice young girl with a generous Erogenian bosom, and she wants to dance.

Varion - I thought it was pretty appropriate. :)

It may also have something to do with Zona having too great of a “male” spirit in her. Remember when Zona tells Mentl that she can’t have children because the shaman/wiseman told her that she was…to put it one way, “too manly.” I know that sometimes, relationships are strange. One of mine ended, and I alienated someone that could have remained a friend because I didn’t want to become like my first ex. Rannik may have done the same thing-perhaps said things he shouldn’t have, arguments ensue, and finally after many years realizing that hey, maybe I was wrong. However, it is too late to take any of it back.

  27. Lora
    May 3rd, 2010 at 5:37 am

A little piece more of the puzzle. Wonder whether Rannik will get face to face with Zona and Mentl or just stay on post the whole time?

Jean - …pfftshahahaha! It could have been. ;) Clearly Zona is not interested in kinky stuff.

  28. Jean
    May 3rd, 2010 at 10:37 pm

Alas, Lora, JED hath spoken: Hunky Guardsman wasn’t one of the “tie me up and spank me” crowd.

…At least, around Zona. Maybe, if we flirt and tease and tickle him enough, he might agree just for us? 8D

  29. calisto
    May 4th, 2010 at 2:22 am

@Jean Please stop salivating on the keyboard… :) and where is that corset pic?

  30. Lora
    May 4th, 2010 at 4:54 am

Hey, as long as she is only salivating her own keyboard… ;) Of course it’s better to drool in the bucket than over your keyboard.

Hmm, yes, it might be. JED says no, but I’m sure a couple of ladies with good convincing powers can do the trick. ;)

  31. Jean
    May 4th, 2010 at 5:49 am

I already posted a link to it. you have to go back a few pages and hunt through the comments…and I always have drool buckets at hand. It helps whenever I have to look at my bookcovers for any reason.

  32. Jason
    May 4th, 2010 at 6:08 am

I’m always amused by people speculating, but I’m not one to do it myself (in the case of this comic anyway.) Guess I’m just content to read the story progress in it’s own time.

  33. Lonely ninja
    May 4th, 2010 at 7:49 am

this guy lies like a new yorker he describes what he was doing not why he was there hmm clever way around that whole lying issue

  34. John
    May 4th, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Mish_Lady - Relationships are, indeed, strange.

Lora - Now, hang on.. Nobody said Zona wasn’t interested in what you or I would call “kinky” stuff. Just doesn’t particularly get turned on by a lover who wants to be tied up and abused. :)

Jean - There’s little that a good lover wouldn’t do to please someone he was in love with. On the other hand, that would be a pretty high bar. :)

Jason - Well, I like it, as it gives me a little validation that the story is at least interesting. But when I’m reading, I like accepting things as they come, too.

Lonely ninja - Oh, but he truly isn’t lying at all. He simply isn’t volunteering any info. In fact, if Ella had said, “Oh - I guess you don’t want to watch Zona dancing with someone else, huh?” He would have admitted it, and no shame. It’s not like, in a small community like this, everybody who cares doesn’t already know.

  35. Lora
    May 5th, 2010 at 4:52 am

Oh, really? :P Now just what kind of ‘kinky stuff’ do she like, hmm? And what about Rannik?

And Jean, that seems like a good reason to always keep a droolbucket around. I’ve seen your bookcovers; definitely drool inducin.

  36. InCestusWeTrust
    May 5th, 2010 at 6:48 am

@Lebbrin - Though I do have the perfect physique for a Transylvanian, I was using the term ‘castperson’ in the fannish sense, as in member of the audience cast, the old crew in Austin at the Riverside, no longer extant. My comment as ED points out is that there was a ‘normal’ daytime release, that was yanked in less than a week in many cases as soon as theatre owners came to the 20th C Fox distributors and said “WTF?”

@All - kink/vanilla machts nicht as long as you do it with a clear eye on your partner and make sure they are happy with what you are doing, Take joy in their pleasure and everything else takes care of itself. I consider my wife a musical instrument that I am fortaante enough not to be tone deaf on. There’s a time to be Satriani and a time to be Clapton. Intention must be paid. Oh, if all else fails, try listening. (Concept)

P.P.S. speaking of all things Rocky, there is a great, great scene in one of Jasper Fforde’s Tuesday Next books about a local theater that has been running performances of Richard III so long that it has become ’scripted’, the cast is pulled from the audience members every performance.

(R3): “When is the Winter of our Discontent?
(Aud): “NOW IS THE WINTER OF OUR DISCONTENT !!!”

    …

(R3): “I, that am rudely stamp’d,” (Audience stomps feet heavily)

An thou knowest not Fforde, get thee to a library. –ICWT

Good on yer, Adam. Extra points if it was in high school. But most Americans are taught to be scared of Old Will (and most schools make sure they stay that way).

Apologies to all, I reversed the first quote. Audience is asking the question, of course.

    Me, I like the poetry:

Not marble, nor the gilded monuments
    Of princes, shall outlive this powerful rhyme;
But you shall shine more bright in these contents
Than unswept stone besmear’d with sluttish time.
When wasteful war shall statues overturn,
And broils root out the work of masonry,
Nor Mars his sword nor war’s quick fire shall burn
The living record of your memory.
    ‘Gainst death and all-oblivious enmity
Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room
Even in the eyes of all posterity
That wear this world out to the ending doom.
So, till the judgment that yourself arise,
You live in this, and dwell in lover’s eyes.

@InCestus… In English Lit in High School we did Romeo and Juliet. In the Old English. Our teacher was a purist and insisted we learn it. One of the best books I read. My favorite Shakespeare moment was in Renaissance Man. Danny Devito’s character teaches a bunch of Army troops Hamlet. Hamlet’s speech that the trooper gives in the rain still gives me goose bumps. (Partial Quote)

    This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
    We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
    This day shall gentle his condition;
Make him a member of the gentry, even if he is a commoner.
    And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.

  42. Lebbrin

(I thought it was from Hamlet but what I find says it was from Henry V). Not sure…

  43. Prairie Son
    October 23rd, 2010 at 3:25 am

Yup, Henry V. Right before the Battle of Agincourt. You might recall that in the movie, they had to drive to Canada to see the play. Because Detroit sucks like that.
