April 3rd, 2010 at 1:04 am
Oh, yeah! I like this pose! Great work JED.
April 3rd, 2010 at 1:04 am
Yehaaah! Tribal

Those moves are WELL done Jed! Keep going!
April 3rd, 2010 at 1:06 am
And here is one of the inspirations for the scene, since some of you wanted the music track:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqnHDcwZ6Zo
And yes, the women dancing are also singing.
April 3rd, 2010 at 1:31 am
The composition of the last panel is inspired. Normally a triangular shape evokes security, but in this case, the stable shape is offset by the effect of the wind whipped flames. The women’s hands echo the movement of the fire. All motion leads upwards and focuses on Zona’s eyes, which are also highlighted by the jewel on her forehead. *puts down chalk* Worth waiting for, JED.
April 3rd, 2010 at 1:36 am
Definitely worth waiting for, and definitely an improvement over the already good ’sketch’ version of the last panel. I agree with what has been said above; the only down side I see is that Zona’s skirt obscures Tula’s legs in the last panel. Since I’m sure this will be compensated for in mere (comic) moments, the only problem is waiting for the next update.
It’s only seven days, it’s only seven days, it’s only seven days…. *whimpers*
April 3rd, 2010 at 1:51 am
Beautiful.
April 3rd, 2010 at 1:51 am
Beautiful work.
April 3rd, 2010 at 3:34 am
I like the look on Mentl’s face, the Erogenian men are all smiling because it’s fun, but nothing new, it seems Mentl is truly taking in the experience…
Let’s hope he keeps blending, altough a Keith Moon like drumsolo would be cool…
April 3rd, 2010 at 3:42 am
Truly inspired JED! The new last panel is DEFINITELY an improvement over the sketch-more dynamic and fluid, like a group dance should be. And Zona’s new pose definitely accentuates her femininity. Nicely done.
April 3rd, 2010 at 3:53 am
I reinstate my former statement: Slick !
April 3rd, 2010 at 5:10 am
As has been said, this is an improvement on the sketch. I think this pose works much better. Her pectoral muscles (I think those are the ones) don’t stand out as much, which is half of the problem I had with the last one, and the pose itself conveys more movement (in essence less pose-y =P).
April 3rd, 2010 at 5:44 am
This is fantastic. The women singing AND dancing, eh- they must have damned good lungs, dancing full-out and singing powerfully is no easy thing to do.
I agree with JustMe- Mentl definately looks more awed than the other men (who already know what to expect and just… Enjoy it, I think.)
I especially love the way the women don’t all have the same pose- dunno if it was intentional but it really reinforces that each woman is dancing for herself (and maybe for someone else!)
I had been wondering if Ipola would dance- guess she’s sitting this one out.
Love the “inspiration music” by the way! It’s very fitting.
Wolfgang- pecs are chest muscles. If that helps.
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:28 am
Cool…and the music reminds me of my old coven days.
At the big regional gatherings, after ceremonies and formalities, we danced and sang around the fire into the night.
sigh…I sometimes miss the old times.
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:59 am
Will there be a translation? Not enough sample text to code break
April 3rd, 2010 at 12:54 pm
mmmm i like. especially third panel, oh the bells! i’d like to believe that the teaser is the start pose for the dance and the final panel here is in the middle somewhere.
April 3rd, 2010 at 2:31 pm
I think Wolfgang meant her biceps (at least, those are what threw me off the most in the sketch), since her pecs are somewhat obscured by her “massive tracts of land.”
I love the way JED managed to convey movement. Very well done.
April 3rd, 2010 at 4:44 pm
JED: Sweetness.
This is definitely a moment for the ladies to show off their moves, and I imagine we’re only seeing bits and pieces… ARGUH! I’d love to see this put to real motion!
April 3rd, 2010 at 5:14 pm
Ami- Here, certainly, but on the sketch her upper chest appeared to have more muscle definition (particularly in the centre) than one would expect on a lady- even one as well-muscled as Zona. I felt there was a little too much “BAMFpecs” going on in the sketch to convey her more femanine side; and of course, the impressive pecs led into the impressive biceps, and the abs were very clearly defined as well.
Uh, my point here (since the sketch has already been well-discussed!) is that there’s no telling if Wolfgang meant pecs, biceps, or even abs, as (in my opinion) they’ve all been improved here from the sketch, making her look less like she’s in warrior-mode.
Aaanyway. It all makes Zona look much more femanine and conveys her grace instead of her strength, which is gorgeous.
Ahem. Rambling over.
April 3rd, 2010 at 11:15 pm
JED, what’s the time signature on that drum pattern? 7/5? (I don’t know why I want to know that, but…)
April 4th, 2010 at 12:33 am
um… Wang Chung? Not seeing them here…
April 4th, 2010 at 2:31 am
Ooo, I do like this pose much more than the teaser panel you put up. Very sinuous and graceful movement by the Erogenian ladies.
The drumming panels are a great lead-up to that last full-shot panel.
I’ve seen lots of 3D rendered comics that can be so boring with the composition and placement of their panels. Your skill at not only putting together a good story, but in putting together a striking comic page on top of it, is one of the biggest reasons I started following this comic in the first place! Keep up the good work.
April 4th, 2010 at 2:38 pm
Lovely, John, simply loverky.
Now, I know the women choose but it makes no sense for them to do too much crossing in front of each other, as someone might get between Zona and Mentl at an inopportune time and get a (ahem) ’sports injury’. Thus, If Tula stays on Zona’s right where her sister can give her a shoulder if her leg gives out, then when the vertical part of the dancing ceases, she will have to be in front of … Boric. Yay! Let’s hear it for earnest young goofs. Or as Spider Robinson once put it: “To my Youth, and may God spare me from a relapse!”
Happy holidays all, ICWT
April 4th, 2010 at 3:02 pm
On a random note- Tula has a planet named after her in Mass Effect 2.
I just found it. And I was amused, and decided to share.
April 4th, 2010 at 6:16 pm
I do not know if this is right, but it’s how I picture the dance to be:
Two circles around the fire. Men on the outermost, facing inwards. Women enter and face outwards.
Men start to drum. The women start to dance, a set piece of x moves. at the end of the moves, they take x steps sideways to a new position and perform the moves again. This continues until a full circle has been made.
At this point, a second, shorter set of moves is made, and each step is a single space sideways. during this circle, however, each girl steps forwards out of the circle to stand before the man she has chosen. The male then has the option to accept or reject the invitation. Dance continues until all women have chosen, or a complete circle has been made. paired up couples leave, new circles form, and the next dance begins…
April 4th, 2010 at 7:33 pm
Is it me or does it look like there is a face shaping in the fire?
April 4th, 2010 at 9:39 pm
@Metroknight now that would be a twist. However, since the last couple of vote incentives (everyone IS voting every time they are here, right?) had no indication of foul play, it’s not likely. Then again, Shuach making an appearance in the flame would be cool.
April 5th, 2010 at 1:50 am
Given this is moon and earth goddess central, Shuach probably wouldn’t have a snowball’s chance in him to manifest, let alone cause shenanigans
April 5th, 2010 at 8:36 am
Hmmmm…I’m suddenly reminded of how Alessa got into the church in Silent Hill hehee…I agree Seaspray, Shuach wouldn’t have a chance to really show up. Unless….it’s been three days for Gorshash. At least, if my time sense in this comic is correct. So even if Shuach doesn’t manifest, we might see Gorshash trying to think up some way to get in there.
I agree with everyone-lovely muse, lovely panels. Kern, I love how you put that-and hopefully Mentl won’t let his happiness get to his hands once Zona offers. But, we all have faith in him! Go Mentl! *Shakes pom-poms.*
I’m also wondering when the Bull Tribe will show up. I do hope that the other Queen will get out soon. But until the Intrigue returns…I am enjoying.
April 5th, 2010 at 11:18 am
What does all the foreign chanting translate to?
April 5th, 2010 at 11:18 am
Great comic btw!!!!
April 5th, 2010 at 1:08 pm
Lebbrin - Thanks! Yeah, I liked this one a lot better. More fluidity and stuff like that.
Dragonson - Thanks, we shall definitely keep going.
Elizabeth - I see what you’re talking about with the hands and the fire - but it was entirely unintentional. Still, spent some time at the Getty on Saturday, and now I want grow up to be Titian or Donatello.
Seriously, there was a neat DaVinci exhibit, and got to see pages from his notebooks up close. Yeesh. Did you know that DaVinci invented the dribble glass? LOL! True story! They listed some of the things he designed for the Medicis, and he made a cup that would empty as you tried to drink it!
T’Renn - I intend to put up a new incentive for you guys tonight or tomorrow, so be patient.
The Old Hack - Many thanks.
JustMe - There isn’t much room for a solo. The dance has it’s own rhythm, which you don’t want to break because you might screw up the dancers themselves.
The MacNut - Thank you. Yes, also as you can see the angle makes a big difference.
Gremalkin - Thanks. I’ll at least grant it’s slicker than the prior incarnation.
Wolfgang - Well, I don’t want things to ever be too “pose-y.” As opposed to a posey, or poesy …
Jason - Yes, they definitely have fine sets of lungs - especially Zona. I put it in the same category of fantasy as any MGM musical where you have Gene Kelly singing and dancing at the same time. Varying the pose was very intentional. I did not want them to look like the Rockettes, but like something more organic. Her Majesty is, indeed, sitting this one out.
Black Ethel - It is meant to convey that kind of a vibe, yes. A friend told me recently that there are African tribes where the women dance in a circle for the drumming men in much the same way we’re presenting here. I didn’t know that when I wrote it, but if it’s true, it probably goes back to some kind of ancient racial memory. Either that or Tarzan movies I saw as a kid, one or the other.
mingzi - The lyrics are to the melody of Maire’s “Beating Heart” and they are inspired by hers, but the actual translation is definitely Erogenian in meaning, with some literal and considerable connotative difference. The rest will be in the next page or two, and you will recognize some Erogenian words we already have used, and new ones I made up to fit the meter and the meaning. Since I’m making ancient Erogenian up as I go along based on how good it sounds, I’m keeping my own notes as to the translation, and eventually I’ll post a “phrase book” of sorts.
ICEKAT - The bells, bells, bells, bells, bells!
AdamZero - So would I. If I can find something suitable as a moCap file, I’ll see about animating a snippet of it. No promises.
Raoul - It’s *wrong,* is what it is. Should have been 4/4, but I lost count when I was making the sound effects. I will fix it soon.
Ed - “the words we use are strong
they make reality
but now the musics on
oh baby dance with me yeah …”
Tomecko - Thank you for the compliment. It’s really just basic composition, nothing terribly special. I agree that there are awful Poser comics out there, because the tool tends to attract folks who are lazy as artists. But that’s the Web for you. It’s wide open and I wouldn’t have it any other way, but the price to pay is that you have to wade through a ton of junk.
InCestusWeTrusr - Actually, there is choreographed reeling action from time to time, and the purpose is actually to make it harder to maintain contact with one person. That’s one of the ways that a man knows that the lady is dancing for him alone, if she is able to keep her focus on him all the while.
Jason - That is amusing, especially since it’s such a *hot* little planet. Tula is also the professional name of a very famous British transexual fashion model.
kern - All I can say is that the way I intend to present it will leave many of the details open to interpretation. However, the dance doesn’t include the formal “choice” per se. That usually takes place in the invitaiton to Second Dance, which is for couples, including those who didn’t dance First Dance. As you might imagine, there are disappointed individuals as in all human society, but it is seldom that we get through Second Dance without anyone who wants someone having found a partner.
Metroknight - If so, I didn’t put him there. Still, such things are not impossible in these types of stories.
Seaspray - You’d think so, wouldn’t you?
Mish_Lady - We have some more party and character stuff before we return to both Tethik and then to Normos again. And please do enjoy.
Nimeni - See my response to mingzi above. The Erogenian-English dictionary is a ways off, though I am definitely keeping notes to make sure that it’s all consistent. And thanks!
April 5th, 2010 at 1:37 pm
Um, new page looking good.
I like the pose of the women in the fourth panel; it’s very dymanic.
April 5th, 2010 at 5:04 pm
Is it ok that I hear the end drums from “The Rhythm of The Heat” by Peter Gabriel, maybe not too far in the distance?
April 5th, 2010 at 5:08 pm
@metroknight and lebbrin: i see the oogie boogie man from nightmare before christmas… maybe thats just me
Not saying you can’t do your own material JE :), nor that it was intentional, heh.
April 5th, 2010 at 6:11 pm
I like the angles, poses, and lighting, but I love the concept, best. There’s something about a bunch of hot women dancing, guided by the men they most desire. I hope Mentl’s powers don’t rearrange things: it could get awkward if they all started dancing for him.
April 5th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
I didn’t say that it was Shuach or anything. I just noticed that it looked like an eye and the beginning bridge of a nose that seemed to be forming. To me it looked more dragon like in nature then anything else but that is probably just my imagination.
April 5th, 2010 at 9:16 pm
So I don’t know the parameters of the program you’re working with, but would it be at all possible to make this scene into a video?
April 6th, 2010 at 7:18 am
@Itsame. Possible, yes. Likely, no. It would take a great deal of processing power to render in less than a decade (at full resolution and full size) and there are a great many models, objects and characters that need to be coaxed through the right motions. The video would also be exceptionally huge (uncompressed) or lose considerable quality during compression to save disk space. I work with Poser’s little brother, DAZ studio so I know of what I speak.
April 6th, 2010 at 10:22 am
@JED “It (the time sig) is wrong.” No offense, but thank god. I’m not the best drummer ever made by any stretch of the imagination, but I thought I was better than that (questionable), and it was driving me nuts. 7/5 was all I could come up with. Silly of me to sit here beating that out on my wristpad, I know.
April 6th, 2010 at 4:47 pm
JED–I am hoping to teach an EXCO for Oberlin College in the fall and would love to use The Challenges of Zona as an example of how webcomics can cause people to interact differently and more directly in a positive way (at least sometimes) compared to other more conventional social sites. Do you mind my drawing on this comic?
April 6th, 2010 at 7:54 pm
Lora - Thanks. Hope we can keep up the “pace” as it were!
ICEKAT - Oh, Peter Gabriel is definitely in the road map … somewhere.
Aardvark - It’s just a more blatant form of the elaborate dance we do for each other at any party, anywhere. Well, any good one, anyway.
Itsame - Uhl is more or less correct. It is possible to do, but with only the one computer and one set of hands, I would have to drop everything for months and STILL it would probably look like crap. Better to let your imagination fill it in, at this point.
Uhl. Yup.
Raoul - Yup. I haven’t gotten around to fixing it, yet, but it will be done.
Karyl - Certainly. However, you may notice that other forums aren’t always as nice and sweet as this one. But I am flattered. Normally, I am an example of that maxim of the Sons Of Anacreon: “If you can’t be a good example, at least be a horrible warning!”
October 28th, 2010 at 1:13 pm
Whoa! I like this event!
