Ah so, Zona gives the definitive word on Rannik; he’s out, Mentl’s in like Flynn. Hope someone dances for Rannik though, kinda feel for the guy.
Unfortunately now we have to wait ’till next week to see some actual dancing…
March 27th, 2010 at 3:40 am
man this page made me think of the theme form The A-Team.
awesome page as always JD.

Poor Rannik. I’ll feel sorry for him if he doesn’t cause trouble.
I like Tula putting a Healing spell on her leg wound.
Panel 4, the ex-teaser, I THOUGHT that was an unfriendly face on Zona in the teaser. She’s not looking for Mantl, Tula just clued her in on Rannik and Zona’s not happy with the exe’s presence or his apparent attitude
March 27th, 2010 at 3:53 am
i love the happy look on Boric’s face when Mentl gives him the thumbs up
so cute
March 27th, 2010 at 3:59 am
To me, Rannik does not as much look disapproving as regretful. I wonder if he has some feeling that he put his foot in it with Zona?
March 27th, 2010 at 4:23 am
Also note, Rannik’s not carrying a drum or anything…. maybe he just left it right behind him, but every guy seems keen on keeping their drum in arm’s reach, or striking distance if you will.
So I’m guessing it’s a bit more to that.
Still, I agree that Boric’s very cute in this. Though I’M surprised that Rannik hasn’t had Zona’s ‘Dance’ in five years… wait…. how long ago was it since the someone said she danced?
Is this a coincidence? I DUNNO!
*sips root beer* Also, it’s pretty clear all the kiddies have gone to bed at this point. Right?
March 27th, 2010 at 4:58 am
I would not be surprised if Rannik have a little word with Mentl after tonight. Not so much a “leave my girl alone” speach, as a “never betray her or else” speach
March 27th, 2010 at 6:42 am
I suspect from the phrasing “gave it up FOR him” that it meant Zona didn’t dance First Dance because she was “going steady” for a while. First Dance–according to Tula–is the chance to pick and choose someone, and presumably someone new, since Tula said she was interested in someone lusty. That doesn’t exactly sound like a long-term romance potential if ya asked me, lol.
But it could be; I don’t deny that possibility. As for Tula and the redhead…Tula is a priestess; according to JED’s writings in past vote incentives, etc., she cannot take a chain bond with anyone, not even a copper path one. So while she can have as many or as few lovers as she likes, and even have as many kids as she may like, her duty is to her people as a whole.
So all of this has many, many layers, which is what we’ve come to expect, enjoy, and anticipate. Thanks, JED!
*passes around several bowls of popcorn…*
March 27th, 2010 at 7:10 am
Hmm. She left her ‘good’ bells with her mother five years ago, right? Coincidence? I think not.
March 27th, 2010 at 8:18 am
Oh, I think Zona is gonna go all out for Mentl after seeing Rannik. I have a feeling they didn’t part ways well.
And Tula seems to think is this going to be fun.
March 27th, 2010 at 8:28 am
You know on that teaser page it looked much more impressive. Oh and is it just me or girls in the background look like cousins of Zona and Tula?
March 27th, 2010 at 9:50 am
They do look awfully similar….
Eh. Still, I hope Rannik keeps things civil. A quick comment to Mentl along the lines of “keep her happy or I rip your arms off” wouldn’t be a bad thing. ^w^
March 27th, 2010 at 10:14 am
I belive it will remain peaceful for tonight but the reprecussions of the next day thats where i wonder if he will try to seperate Mental from the group and either try to kick his ass or give him the you hurt her i’ll do 90,000 indescribeable things to you that wont kill you but will make you whish you died.
March 27th, 2010 at 11:11 am
Ok, so is Momma gonna dance tonight? And if she did, would we have a show stopping moment, a “MOM!!” (from Tula and Zona) moment, or a “pardon me while I go claw my eyes out ” (also from Zona and Tula) moment?
And I wonder where Yatta is? Maybe still, eh hm, “recovering” or will he put in an appearance? Oh, wouldn’t be something if he could play the drums as well as he can sword fight. I mean, both are all about rhythm, really.
One final thing, from experience I can tell you wearing that type of clothing and standing that close to a fire that size is not just uncomfortable, its down right painful!
March 27th, 2010 at 11:14 am
I think the best thing Rannik can do tonight, for himself, and everyone else, is go relieve someone on guard duty.
March 27th, 2010 at 12:26 pm
Rannik looks regretful. Zona looks determined, as in “I’ll never give him a moment of my time” determined. I think he disappointed or hurt her. I don’t think he’s gonna try to ‘reclaim’ her; SHE’ S the champion. not a Kivalian woman. And from what I understand, a woman can dance first dance even if she’s in a relationship–she’s just dancing for that one man alone. I mean, you gotta keep the fires burning–giving up on the romance once you’re with someone is a sure way to NOT be with that someone.
March 27th, 2010 at 12:39 pm
Yep, she’s not going to give Rannik the time of day, and he’s not surprised. Mentl’s probably going to get an extra special dance, just because Rannik is there!
and as to the queen–well, maybe Yatta will have a surprise of his own?
March 27th, 2010 at 1:26 pm
“Look…”
March 27th, 2010 at 1:28 pm
Ah, wrong button. Aaaaaanyway…
Well, so far all the Erogenian men we’ve met are always calm, cool and collected, never emotional, so everything will be just peachy.
And Santa really will bring me that red fire engine if I just keep on hoping long enough.
March 27th, 2010 at 1:54 pm
Yatta-ta isn’t going to show up, fellow fans. We heard it from Sheahla herself. The man. Never. Quits.
Which means he was in her quarters ALL night long, from the moment she dragged him away to a point somewhere past where a tired, sore, happy, astounded, sated Sheahla whinged to her cousin about needing her sleep. (We can presume past that point because Mentl meets up with Yatta-ta in a scene after Zona meets up with Sheahla, and that Mentl is expecting Zona to be in bed when he gets back, which means she will have returned to bed after wandering around, looking for a drink or the bathroom, and encountering her cousin.)
March 27th, 2010 at 2:43 pm
Wonderful, the teaser was exactly not what we expected. love it!
March 27th, 2010 at 7:19 pm
Stormhawk, I’m pretty sure that the queen’s gonna turn heads all on her own, and the gals have prolly seen her dance dozens of times…
I mean she’s not bound to anyone, and she seems a happy queen. I imagine she’s kept up a happy sex life since her coupling with the Wolf king (Tula’s Father, if we care to recall.) I mean if she’s friends with The Queen-Momma of Kilvalia then we gotta trust the lady’s got a working mojo.
March 27th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
Yes, but Mama is not wearing bells. She may have plans of her own after hours, but I don’t think she’s dancing tonight. It’s bad form to steal the younglings’ thunder.
March 27th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
Ok, I had to go re-read page 314 again to refresh my memory. (It’s the page with Boric and Rannik in the tower.) Rannik does say “It’s not a good idea to fall too in love with a princess… I mean priestess.” He was giving advice to Boric, but the slip indicates that he fell for Zona. As I re-read it, I think Rannik’s regret is one of “I sure screwed up.” and won’t become a problem tonight. Then again, where JED is concerned anything can happen.
March 28th, 2010 at 3:10 am
Perhaps Rannik wants kids, realizes it won’t happen with Zona, but is still carrying a Statue-of-Liberty-sized torch for her. If frustrated harsh words were spoken over the issue, it could explain the feelings both are displaying here.
March 28th, 2010 at 3:51 am
You all seem to be forgetting that all the women may fell for Mentl, remember what happens when he plays an instrument and sings, even though he probably won’t be singing, I think his magic covers all musical forms.
March 28th, 2010 at 4:02 am
Hence the look momma gives Zona after she asks when Zona knew she loved Mentl on page 349. I think momma thinks Zona might be undr a spell. I personally doubt it but if you remember it affected Tula when he sang for them.
March 28th, 2010 at 4:53 am
As for people looking alike, remember:
1) The Erogenian clans are pretty small in terms of a genetic base (5000/clan?) so a certain amount of in-breeding is inescapable.
2) JED only has so many models to base his characters on…;) [How many base models DO you work from, JE?]
March 28th, 2010 at 6:51 am
Tonite we dance in HELL!
Sry, couldn´t resist.
Hope the dance pans out better than this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qBFNaA7u1E

March 28th, 2010 at 10:36 am
Jitter bug! XD, another great page can’t wait for the next one ^_^
March 28th, 2010 at 12:44 pm
Great stuf mate! As usual you really fooled me! Classic!!!
March 28th, 2010 at 6:44 pm
Gremalkin-I am right there with you dude, I think he is regretful and determined to be what he can when he can, both to Zona in specific and his people in general. I like the guy, he is the one who let the kid at the gate off duty just in time to give Tula flowers right? He will be jealous, (who wouldn’t be?) but he will take it in stride I think. I do believe you are right about that “NEVER HURT HER…” conversation though.
March 28th, 2010 at 7:54 pm
Thanks, Hans. Now I’ve got that mental image in my head of Rannik dancing in drag to the Lady Gage tune. Which is, admittedly, pretty funny.
March 29th, 2010 at 12:24 am
Rannik, hell, I’d like to see the Prince of the Fire Tribe! XD
March 29th, 2010 at 12:58 am
“… gave up dancing for /him/ five years ago.” Seems to me that she gave up dancing for that specific man five years ago. Maybe quit dancing first dance because of him. It will be fun to see where it goes. Can’t wait to see the dancing. You are an amazing artist and storyteller, JD. Thank you for sharing your vision with us.
March 29th, 2010 at 1:57 pm
As always, lots of speculation, which is the sign of a good writer. We never know what to expect. That said have to throw in my 2 cents.
The way i read the last panel, Zona was dancing to attract Rannik’s attention and he paid her no heed at the time (Not a good idea to fall for a princess was a slip of the tongue on his part i think maybe because he felt he was not good enough for Zona (??just a thought??))
great story and past experience shows it’ll only get better.
March 30th, 2010 at 12:50 pm
Wow… this page is just so incredibly beautiful, that I had to comment on it. The way you did the hair and the fire is so pretty! I can’t wait to see how the story (and the art) continues to develop.
March 30th, 2010 at 2:31 pm
Hi, kids! Sorry I haven’t been too communicative lately. Rough weekend, and for some reason Con-Pewter just keeps slopping up the works and slowing down. I dunno, must be me. BUT I bought Poser 8 (thanks to all who contributed!), and now all my dreams will come true! As soon as I migrate all the gigabytes of files over to where it can access it, so still using Poser 7 for this page which is teaching me things I didn’t want to learn!
The MacNut - Oh, Mentl was always definitely in. And Rannik has been out for awhile. Fun story behind that one - but that will have to wait.
the captain - Somehow I don’t quite have the same musical image - on the other hand, I know what’s coming. Different sort of perspective, naturally.
Sarge - Yeah, she’s not too pleased. It’s not revealing too much to note that she was not too pleased with Rannik five years ago.
TheRaven - Yeah. He just got thrown a fricking bone.
The Old Hack - There’s history.
AdamZero - Yes, this is *not* something that the under-17s get to participate in.
Gremalkin - Not tellin’!
Jean - Yes, but it could also be “I gave up dancing for HIM” or it could also be “I gave UP dancing for him” or … nya-ha-ha…
Aust - No. It is not coincidence.
Lora - Tula knows the whole story, of course, and yes, she thinks it will be … interesting.
zenla - Well, it was bigger, ya know? Check out the new vote incentive and see how much better some of these things look when they’re not squinched up with dialogue balloons all over `em. And yes, as Tula says - they’ve got a LOT of cousins.
Sleepinin - That’s providing he gets close enough to even have a word.
NakhtiChaos - Depends on how you define “Peaceful.” Were Keltan and Liri “peaceful?”
Stormhawk - Part of the illusion of closeness to the fire is the “lens” I’m using. They aren’t really *that* close to the fire. I just like the neat flame-y background.
aPrincess - You have it right. Zona is dancing for Mentl and no one else, . There are a few older gals around the fire tonight, dancing for their partners because it’s very sexy and romantic. It’s very much “done.”
Karyl - Yatta-ta is really really really really really busy just now.
Jim Farris - Rannik is definitely an exceptional Erogenian. And, comparatively, the Moon Tribe is *very* cool and reserved.
Jean - Yup.
ICEKAT - Thanks! Nice to know time has not taken away my power to surprise you.
Adamzero - Her Majesty has a healthy sex life, when she can find time for it, which wisdom dictates that she does. Erogenians look on it as necessary as eating and breathing. Not that alpha personalities don’t occasionally forget to do either properly …
SamuraiDemonPuppy - Ipola is not, indeed, wearing bells.
Lebbrin - As I said, there’s a story there.
Hypertrophic - Yes, yes it could explain it.
Joruka - His magick covers all musical forms - all chanting, as it were. But most important of all is intent.
Sarge - Quite so. And I think I put in the FAQ that the models I use most are Michael2 and 3 and Victoria2 and 3. The gals in the background are, like the princesses, Victoria 3. Still, I find that even the earlier versions of the model give me a lot of variation. Mentl, Tethik, Zonn and King Tor are all Michael 2. Rannik, Boric, and various of the male extras are Michael 3. Pretty neat, huh?
hans - I am sorry to say that all I know of Lady Gaga is her ability to costume herself like a cartoon. Still, it sounds funny.
zangoules - Thanks! Neither can I, but I’m still trying to whip Poser 7 into shape. Maybe tonight I’ll port everything over to Poser 8 and have done with it.
Warnie - Thanks. Meh-he-he! I just needs a teensy bit of deviousness …
Professor 61771 - Yes, he is the one who let Boric run off to “fawn” on Tula. As you saw, Boric had a lot of company in that.
Joe - Not me. I am spared by the blessing of ignorance.
Jean - Never happen. Unless, of course, you were to visit the Otherwhen and get caught up in the Unreality of it. As Vito said - dangerous. But a LOT of fun.
Mayre - You’re very welcome, and I relish the compliment. I am grateful you are more easily amazed than I am, but then I see all the warts that hopefully you miss.
Daryen - Well, it might go that way. Or not. Ye shall all see, if I can get this damn thing to render right.
Fantasy Reader - Thank you so much. The hair I actually did very little other than add highlights to this time. They are beautiful wigs obtained from Runtime DNA. Zona is wearing “Winter Princess” (I thought appropriate) and I can’t remember the name of the hair Tula’s got. It’s like that, a bit more colorful name than her usual braids: “HR-30.”
March 30th, 2010 at 8:16 pm
Ya know…if Rannik is such a neat guy (on the inside as well as sexeh on the outside)…could I have him? Er, I mean, borrow him? For Easter Weekend? I’m going to Norwescon, and I wouldn’t mind a big beefy cute man along for company. I promise to bathe him and dress him in clean tight pants when I’m done! 8D
(Anyone else going to Norwescon?)
March 30th, 2010 at 11:28 pm
Wow. The moonlight on woman in the back right of the Incentive looks absolutely real. Cold silver and black shadows, contrasting with rose gold firelight. Hat is off to you, John.
