March 13th, 2010 at 12:45 am
First!
I mean, I’m gonna go back and see if there aren’t more secret messages.
March 13th, 2010 at 12:48 am
LOL. and here I thought I was first when I saw no comments. Oh, well.
Nice page as always JED. From the look on our red-headed friend he isn’t assuming the worst, just hoping Mentl is ‘going to bat’ for him. I mean it has to be known the whole village over by now that Mentl is Zona’s guy and therefore no competition for those hoping to attract Tula, right? Bring on the dance. Let’s get this show on the road.
March 13th, 2010 at 12:50 am
Arrgh, double post. The “and a ten is…” “Zona” The look on Tula’s face in the last panel is perfect!
March 13th, 2010 at 1:01 am
Great Panel!
Well worth the wait.
March 13th, 2010 at 1:24 am
Wow that’s some pretty heady emotional stuff there Tula. You already consider him a brother? You haven’t known him that long. Of course it has been quality time to be sure. You get to know someone pretty fast under those circumstances. Still that is quite a thing to say and mean.
March 13th, 2010 at 1:25 am
Know what else is a ten? This comic! Thank you so much JED /huggles
March 13th, 2010 at 1:30 am
D’awww. The sweetness of the third panel…has given me CAVITIES! You’ll be getting my dental bill JED
Seriously though, another nicely done page. The relationship between Tula and Mentl evolves in a most positive direction. You can tell she’s going to be his second biggest supporter in the village-after her sister, of course.
And yeah, Mentl, you ARE the ugliest mug in the place, by our standards anyway. Not that it really matters there, I think even if he hadn’t hooked up with Zona some Erogenian tribeswoman would’ve taken a liking to him. Maybe even Tula herself.
March 13th, 2010 at 1:41 am
Not ugly, MacNut , just homely like my favorite Dog that has a heart of gold and the courage of five lions. Everybody that meets him ends up loving him, much like Mentl.
Thanks Jed for another nice Panel and Plot line.
March 13th, 2010 at 2:00 am
@someguy
It was said somewhere earlier, that they were “out camping” for quite some time, before the return to the tribe here.
Would be great if JD could give us the broad ballpark again how long they were together now. Also surviving intense situations together always creates a different kind of bond than just “hanging out” for quite some time.
March 13th, 2010 at 3:03 am
Does this mean no threesome? I thought sure that the look Zona and Tula traded in the tunnel after the “great balls of fire!” incident meant that Mentl was in for a very big SuRPRISE once thier tribulations were over. Nuts. I even had fantasies of Mentl marrying them both.
Whimpers as tears fall from his eyes and down his nose and face, “Whaaa!”
Kitten boy with little lord fauntleroy blue eyes licks his spoon and holds out his “BOWL!” “Thank you sir! It is very good. May I please have some more?”
March 13th, 2010 at 3:27 am
Once again I am struck by how powerful and intense Jed’s characters are. You feel for them, you feel with them and you know that they mean every word they say. Masterful storytelling.
March 13th, 2010 at 5:02 am
This is an interesting conversation, linguistically. Mentl has slowly grown more…mm…local in his speech and attitudes, up until now. Or at least less outworlder-ish. (Not by a whole lot, true, but by a discernible amount all the same.) Now, however…I get the feeling Mentl is bringing out his “after-party” personality, the kind he’d display for the party after a performance. Or at least like he’s reverting to the side of himself he’d display at a party back home, replete with slang and so forth.
Which, for me, is quite believable to see.
March 13th, 2010 at 5:08 am
I love that you are doing the preview panels. Your work is so beautiful. It’s great to get to look at some up close without the word bubbles. I’d like to see panel 5 with the redhead guy up close, if you are taking orders!
March 13th, 2010 at 6:48 am
Brother, huh? Well, a brother can count as a ’safe’ man I suppose, but there are sibling issues (even Zona and Tula have displayed a couple). Friends are better if they’re close.
Anyway, I called it pretty close — Safe Man Syndrome.
Now, are we going to get to the drumming and dancing before the Summer Solstice?
BTW, we know that the party couldn’t have been TOO disastrous since Zona is pretty chipper (if overdressed) when she visits Sheahlah on the Mrning After in the Incentive.
March 13th, 2010 at 10:38 am
Indeed Sarge, Mentl too looks quite pleased with himself, as he illuminates Yatta-ta to the scale of the rocking his world got the previous night (That’s a right mouthful).
Honestly, of the cast so far, I think the only ‘one’s I’ve seen are the ranting priest from way back, and of course, our stupid stupid regent prince Maldik. (which if you look at it Mal-dick ‘Mal’ dick, bad dick. Haha. I’m seeing subtle jokes where there are none.)
But yeah….. and the urtts. THe urtts are zero’s IMO.
March 13th, 2010 at 10:45 am
That was nice…I honestly didn’t know what she would say.
JED I love the fact that this isn’t just a tits and ass comic. There is depth. You tell a good story and put real emotion into it. The eye candy is great, but there is actually a real story and not shallow. Keep up the good work.
And as for Mentl…no, he’s not handsome. But he’s the type of guy I always dated…and ended up marrying. I’ve been with my guy for over 20 years…and have loved him every minute of it.
March 13th, 2010 at 10:53 am
I have to respectfully disagree with Gremalkin. JED has cranked it up to 11. Another great page.
March 13th, 2010 at 11:59 am
Yeah JE this is definately a crowd pleaser. Love the direction the mead is taking both of them ;). I hope Tula’s leg is strong enough to do some fun stuff with her dance, for whomever she chooses.
March 13th, 2010 at 12:25 pm
Another great page lol, and Tula’s face on the last panel…perfect XD
March 13th, 2010 at 12:45 pm
Fantastic. JED know’s the tricks of the trade well.

Can’t say i don’t love those cross-dimensional explanations though.
March 13th, 2010 at 1:05 pm
I really don’t see where people get that Mentl’s not good-looking. Sure, he’s not one of the Winchester brothers (woof), but he’s pretty nice looking himself. Not to mention, he’s completely adorable, especially in this page. There were audible “awwww’s” from me on this one.
March 13th, 2010 at 1:17 pm
Actually I like the way Mentl has trimmed his goatee.. it looks much better now.
March 13th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
Never “really” had a brother? What kind of pseudo-siblings would Tula be talking about? And from the tone of her voice, whatever’s in that golet’s starting to kick in! The leaning in, the lidded look, the candid mention of her post-dance plans, and the loooong legged ankle-bell showoff… beware!
March 13th, 2010 at 2:45 pm
jebus, I was always a bit more into Zona, but I have to say, Tula’s just smoldering in this comic…
March 13th, 2010 at 4:50 pm
@Fred you mean http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Up_to_eleven?
March 13th, 2010 at 6:12 pm
For those of us who don’t have the best of eyesight - what does the secret message say? ‘I am casual Wednesday… something’?
March 13th, 2010 at 6:17 pm
@Kern: “I am casual. Witness me being cool. And casual.”
March 13th, 2010 at 6:18 pm
With that sweet-talk out of the way, Mentl now can ask her if she considers
it safe for him to use the drums…
So he will have a good excuse, should some SFX happen
Also, what is the matter with her brother ?
March 13th, 2010 at 7:20 pm
As an aside regarding the latest voting incentive, I was pretty surprised (and pleased) that Mentl knows his Dostoevsky. The guy has more layers than at least I tought. Good for him!
Now, to try and tie this together with a comment about this page: The elegant, and so very fitting, combined insult and compliment he pays to Yatta in the vote incentive fits in well with the after-party persona he projects in this page, to use Jean’s choice of words. To me this seems like Mentl has “come home” so to speak, he seems more relaxed than we have ever seen him before. He’s a great wing man, says the right thing at the right time, throws friendly insults… Actually, he behaves the way I often wish I was able to. Somehow, I suspect Mentl really was never this much at home on our Earth, given his earlier bearing and the way he has described his life.
March 13th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
And… My personal guess is Tula’s comment about never really having a brother is pretty innocent and just reflects the convoluted family arrangements in Erogenia. High praise, nevertheless.
March 13th, 2010 at 7:29 pm
I’ve got CAVITIES from this page I tell you! CAVITIES!!! My dentist is gonna love me…
March 13th, 2010 at 11:34 pm
I’d like to echo The Old Hack, excellent character depth. I’ve read published authors, quite successful ones at that, who couldn’t make me care about their characters like you do JED.
*Raises tankard of Meade*
“Hail!”
March 14th, 2010 at 3:30 am
Wow. I’m with mr_oof on this one. Unless I’m TOTALLY misreading Tula’s body language there, methinks her interest in Mentl goes a little beyond that of a “brother”.
Also, all the times that Mentl had to explain his slang to Tula had me rolling in my chair. AND I was imagining having to explain the phrase “He’s really into you.” to an Erogenian.
Actually, that lead to a frantic search of the interwebs for the etymology of the slang definition of “into” meaning “interest.” I still haven’t found anything. =\
March 14th, 2010 at 3:58 am
Tula’s comment about not feeling like any of her cousins could qualify as a brother, but Mentl does, is quite accurate for some of us. Like Tula and Zona, I have one sister, no brothers…by blood/birth. However, my family has managed to adopt (or be adopted by) a plethora of honorary sisters AND brothers.
For that matter, I have an honorary uncle. I knew he was my uncle (though we have zero blood relation for umpteen generations) because he annoys the snot out of me at times, yet I still love him, crotchety old ex-military geezer that he is. And my “baby brother” may be older than me by a handful of years, and nowhere related to me by blood or marriage…but he’s my baby brother all the same, even though technically there’s only my sister and me.
Some people, you just *know* are family. You may argue from time to time, but you’d back them in a fight against any and all outsiders. You aren’t attracted to them in the least (inadvertent glimpses of “love…thing” and moments of enchanted love song aside), but you do love them all the same–with filios, brotherly/sibling love.
March 14th, 2010 at 7:49 am
That vote incentive… MADE ME ROFL! Yet another “normal” moment from Yatta. Performance anxiety IS one of the greatest problems men face in ANY culture. Yatta was at least brave enough to admit it.
March 14th, 2010 at 10:14 am
Great page, JED:
I love how they are talking about several things at the same time. The other guy, dancing, Zona, slang, Mentl and Tula’s relationship…
Now, are Zona gonna arrive soon or what? Let’s get the dancing started!
March 14th, 2010 at 6:10 pm
ya know , they have kinda fitted into a comfortable routine with each other. They know and recognize each other and their places within the universe.
(I agree with the guys above , that in a lot of ways Tula wishes she was in her sisters place . Yet she is not going to rain on her beloved sister party . now that her sister has finally found a man.)
March 15th, 2010 at 1:45 am
@Addup2 Exactly, though JED may have actually cranked it to 12 or beyond.
March 15th, 2010 at 9:20 am
For a while I wanted some Hollywood production company to pick this story up and develop it into a a quality animated movie (series?)…
Then I realized that they would likely just FUBAR and reduce it to the level of the schmaltz currently being produced.
March 15th, 2010 at 3:32 pm
erogenial - It’s a recent phenomenon, but folks seem to like it.
Lebbrin - Sorry that the pace is slow, but first there’s a couple more pages of talky-talk before we finally see the gals shake a leg.
hans - Thanks very much.
Someguy - Quality time, indeed. A lot of living gets done in a few weeks of life-threatening/saving hard-fighting, back-covering type of time. At this point, she has no problem calling Mentl “brother.”
Gremalkin - I do appreciate the thought very much, though my own estimate is a bit lower on the scale. Still, thanks.
The MacNut - Sorry about the saccharine scene, dude. Can’t help myself. This is the part of these stories where the heroes have a good time before things get more difficult. For their sake, pray that it lasts.
dolo-pzora - You’re welcome. And I actually don’t think Mentl is “ugly” so much as “plain.” Yet when you compare his first appearance to now, even though it’s the exact same model, morph, texture and all he doesn’t look so bad. The hair and the beard and the duds make a lot of difference.
hans - They were on the road for about four or five weeks, walking and riding. A lot of that is barely making headway climbing steep hills and mountain passes and circling around large landmarks and obstacles.
Doc Alaska - A threesome was never in the cards, boychik. Sorry.
That look they traded was more like - “Is he for real?” “Yes, he is for real.” And Tula cannot marry anyone, as you know since I know you paid attention.
The Old Hack - Thanks, very much. Yes, most Erogenians mean what they say - in that they are unusual, even in their world. A bit old-fashioned, that idea of a straightforward character.
I had an acting coach who once told us that the difference between Shakespeare and a lot of modern authors and playwrights is that there is no “subtext” to his characters. They tell you who they are in plain language, right in their own speeches. He disagreed with modern re-imaginings of the plays in that they were over-analyzed and made to fit a modern Freudian sensibility when they really were just good stories with enormously well-defined and well-drawn characters whose attributes were the result of a genius’ observations of the real-life people in his own very colorful world. And those characters are all around us, always, with every step you take out into society, whether it’s London of 1593 or Los Angeles in 1990 or Squeedunk, Ohio in 2010.
Jean - Mentl’s had a few, he’s more relaxed than he’s been at any time since he got unceremoniously popped into this world from San Bernardino. Also, he’s articulating concepts he hasn’t had to since he came here, so his own natural slang will come into play. I really didn’t think too much about it, other than that the cute byplay of the verbal culture clash would be fun.
MaryLynne - Well, that won’t be in tomorrow’s teaser, but perhaps that can be the next incentive.
Sarge - Yes, you are right. He’s definitely safe, and he’s okay with that. As to the pace, read above answer to Lebbrin. Sorry , but it will make you all the gladder to see it when it comes!
AdamZero - Can I say that the whole idea of “10″ is BS? I used it as a bit of shorthand here to make a point, but frankly if Bo Derek was supposed to be a “ten,” then give me more sevens and eights or even a five or six with a good heart and a solid interest in sex. Note that even Mentl hesitates to objectively rate Zona as a ten, because she doesn’t match the parameters that supposedly make up a “ten:” She’s too tall, hugely muscular, her breasts are too big, and probably other things I’ve never bothered to learn about. The point is that she’s a ten to *him,* as Tula observes (perceptive lass, she is) and that’s what counts.
Black Ethel - Thanks. I do want to tell the story above all. Yes, fantasy should have pretty things to look at, but not in a vacuum. If they’re not at least nominally like real people, I lose interest. That’s why my favorite fantasy film is still “Ladyhawke.”
Fred - You really are too kind. Thanks.
ICEKAT - Thanks. Hope the crowd remembers all the pleasing when I put them through the wringer.
zangoules - Thanks. Not entirely sure I agree with you, but I’m really picky.
Dragonson - Well, I think everyone got over the mispronunciations of “San Bernardino” awhile ago, so time for a little more subtle stuff.
Ami - I think he’s cleaned up very well, especially since the hair hides his huge loving-cup ears.
Mysto - Yes, I do too. I used the alternate “beardless” version of his texture, and this is a beard prop that, as some have observed, is a bit more real-looking.
mr_oof - Tula has literally dozens of cousins in the Moon Tribe and the Wolf Tribe. But, given that marrying your cousin is, as it is in many places, not a taboo in Erogenia, there was always a different dynamic, sometimes subtle sometimes not. Mentl is not like that, and it’s new and refreshing to her.
Sockpuppet - Word.
Addup2 - YEAH! Did you see Spinal Tap on The Daily Show not too long ago?
Kern - See MacGuyver below.
MAcGuyver - Thanks very much.
LurkerAbove - See my explanation to mr_oof. She doesn’t have one.
Steinar - As I said, he knows his Mel Brooks better than his Dostoevsky. He’s only read the Cliff notes. And that is an interesting comment about Mentl’s past on Earth. Yes, I think there’s some merit to it.
TheLastGarou - Thanks so much. I have the advantage of being an amateur and this being pretty much my only project, so I can devote all my spare time to it.
Kosetsu - “Into” would be, I imagine, like being “into” a blanket, wrapped up in it and comfortable, or “into” a house, a room, a store, a library, or something. the key would be “in” rather than “interest,” I presume.
Jean - Very apt. See my explanation above.
Uhl - Glad you like it! And yes, we men are that insecure.
Lora - A couple pages of dialogue and you’ll have the dancing. I promise.
warnie - Perhaps. I think she just likes him, and not in a sexual way. It’s been that way from the beginning.
Fred - Please!
Local Yokel - Well, I would prefer a series. And I would never want to get involved with a major production company. The advantage of being a hobbyist is the complete creative control. Honestly, I think it can be done very cheaply (relatively speaking) on Poser, Vue or other readily available software. I would need to partner with an animator who would, like me, work for next to nothing. Also, I would need to recruit voice actor buddies of mine who would, likewise, work for next to nothing. Under those circumstances, it could be done. Hm. Wonder if Dino would want to promote it as a project …
March 15th, 2010 at 3:50 pm
I’m surprised no has asked “What is Jesus?”. Hahahaha.
March 15th, 2010 at 4:14 pm
Hell, I’d do the voice acting for free.
March 15th, 2010 at 4:25 pm
JED, sorry - not even entirely sure what the daily show is - I’m on the other side of the atlantic to you, so my TV is a little different.
March 15th, 2010 at 5:45 pm
Boric may thinks he looks casual, but he looks more like my dog when she’s hoping for a biscuit
March 15th, 2010 at 6:39 pm
Heh, I don’t think you’d have trouble finding willing subjec- erm, fans to help with the voice overs.
It could be fun seeing it animated some day.
March 15th, 2010 at 7:28 pm
@addup: http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes/
It´s really a must-see for every anglo-phile.
Was worried after Obama it would too become another democratic/liberal mouthpiece, but Jon usually bites both sides “almost” equally.
March 15th, 2010 at 7:54 pm
Ok, just to be clear, I was not complaining about the pacing. I LOVE how this is going. Just getting in the moment. Keep up the great work JED.
March 16th, 2010 at 10:27 pm
“Not ugly, MacNut , just homely like my favorite Dog that has a heart of gold and the courage of five lions. Everybody that meets him ends up loving him, much like Mentl.”
Bang. On.
After tonight, Boric will happily impale himself on Urrt spears for the guy. But anyone wishing Mentl ill probably have to get through Yatta-Ta first. And Tula. Assuming they ever made it past Zona.
And Tula? I know JD doesn’t believe in the concept, but you’re that very rare creature who rates at “100″ (10 looks x 10 personality).
Zona personifies the Earth Goddess, down to her cha and strength, but Tula seems to personify the Moon goddess, down to her off-the-scale magical talents and wise outlook. I think that’s why together they seem like such a complete representation of the Erogenians, while apart you’d know something was missing - they balance both goddess aspects.
