Mentl has a habit of saying exactly the right thing, doesn’t he?

  2. The MacNut
    March 5th, 2010 at 2:01 am

He sure does. Tula certainly appreciates it. And DAMN does she look good in that last panel!

Yet another well done page, JE.

    March 5th, 2010 at 2:01 am

Psh. Who’d be surprised? I mean, this is Tula we’re talking about.

  4. Kosetsu
    March 5th, 2010 at 2:11 am

…I wonder where Mentl got that drum? O_o; And furthermore, how proficient is he with it? I suppose inherent musical talent will take you a long way, but it’d be interesting to see him try and perform one of his “special songs” with that.

Also, I’ve been examining that… er, top of Tula’s. (Yes, just her top.) Can anyone tell me just how on earth it is staying on her chest? XD It looks like it is going to fall of as soon as she takes a deep breath, or bends over another inch.

  5. The Old Hack
    March 5th, 2010 at 3:10 am

@Kosetsu: I expect the guy from last page gave the drum to Mentl. :)

Yes, he has a talent for saying the right thing. It does make me wonder a little, though. Tula seemed almost defensive there. It can’t be an entirely easy thing for her, living in the shadow of her older sister the living legend. It may be that Mentl is the first man she ever met who has had something going with Zona and didn’t automatically consider Tula just some sort of second choice.

Kosetsu, if it’s fitted fairly snugly to begin with, and then drawn slightly tighter along both the top and the bottom, the very curves of her breasts will hold it in place. It’s nothing more than a tube-top, really, except that it has lacings over the sternum instead of more cloth…and that the way how lacings loosen and tighten in different spots change the tension points.

Put me in a corset, or a bodice that laces up the front, and the lacings will always draw in tighter/closer above and below my breasts, and spread wider/looser over the bulk of my bosom. And then not go anywhere for the rest of the day, once they’ve reached the equilibrium point. In fact, the only way to cure this problem is for me to lace my corsets to the middle point (where my waist is narrowest) rather than the top or bottom, or to have separate sections of laces at 3 or 4 points up the length of a bodice. (This also helps in supporting my figure, since I can tighten the lacings right under the bosom, and be assured they won’t shift when I breathe/bend/whatever.)

Mentl, the ladies man. But what did you expect from a bard. He may be new to this world, but socializing is a universal skill. And that can open many doors “or legs if your a musician ;) “. (The horny bard does not represent us) +100 Geek points for all who gets the reference :)

For all those who question Fantasy Females’ Bountiful Bosoms, I have my own theory on this. The mammary glands of Fantasy Females generate Hydrogen, which both inflates the booby and makes it lighter, leading to the spectacular endowments with which JD gifts us. The Hydrogen-generation capacity atrophies at menopause and the bosoms of the elder females deflate and sag, as also shown by JD.

This FFBB Theory also explains why the FFs’ garments need no support shoulder straps. In an FF as well-endowed as Ipola, for example, the ‘tube top’ is not supporting the bosom, it is preventing it from rising!

It should be noted that JD rejected The Bouyant Booby Theory when I mentioned it in the Forum, so I decided to run it past you guys for laughs.

Outstanding page as usual, but also as usual we are kept in suspense for at least another week before we find out what happens when Mentl drums - or IF he does!

  12. Lora
    March 5th, 2010 at 6:26 am

Tula appreciates Mentl’s compliment. I suspect she gets quite a lot, but mostly from men, who are sexually interested in her and she knows Mentl isn’t.
So, what will the answer be? :P

And for the top… well, if it were me I’d have less laced up space and more cloth in between, but the top seems quite cute otherwise. Just not too practical. ;)

  13. Stormhawk
    March 5th, 2010 at 6:59 am

OK, now really want to see Jean in that corset. Btw, what Tula is wearing is leather, if soaked in beeswax, leather can be formed and used as armor (like the Romans used to do). It may be that the top is form fitted then soaked to retain the cup shape.

  14. ladygreensleeves
    March 5th, 2010 at 7:31 am

Everyone together now: “AWWWWW!!!!” Mentl is such a sweetheart. I hope Tula chooses that guy to dance with. Correct me if I’m wrong (and I most likely am,) was he one of the guys who wanted to kill Yatta-Ta earlier? If so, it makes me giggle a bit. ^_^ Keep up the good work, JE!

  15. Lebbrin
    March 5th, 2010 at 7:34 am

@Gremalkin Nah, that’s not Mentl being a ladies man. He has Zona. That’s Mentl scoring some major “sister of your girl” points by being honest.

Everybody’s already said it, but excellent page as always JED.

  16. Sockpuppet
    March 5th, 2010 at 7:43 am

yea, the firelight looks great, and Mentl does have a habit of saying just what needs to be said…

  17. LG
    March 5th, 2010 at 7:45 am

Wow, Tula looks fantastic in that last panel. Kinda makes me want more ‘Hot Stuff’ of her. And as so many others have said, fantastic comic JED

  18. calisto
    March 5th, 2010 at 8:37 am

a side ways complement is always remembered, even more so when it may be the guy is unaware of how the compliment is received, as though it may have just been as an apraisail of the situation rather than an outright compliment. (if that last bit was too complicated you have never tried to impress someone by not impressing them.)
@Jean can you go over the whole “how the clothes fit the curves” bit in more detail? type slower too… and use italics. :)

  19. Uhl
    March 5th, 2010 at 9:06 am

@ladygreensleeves, I think he’s the guy at the gate who had to ask his superior permission to go see Tula on her return to Erogenia.

  20. Someguy
    March 5th, 2010 at 11:04 am

Such a smoothie. @Lora I wouldn’t say Mentl isn’t interested in Tula sexually after all I think we remember his first reaction to the Zona/Tula/Mentl threesome idea. He just isn’t seriously sexually interested being so thoroughly in love with her sister.

  21. JE Draft

Peregrin - Yeah, well it’s easy, sometimes. Still, it never gets old, I’ve found. Sincerity is the greatest charm. Once you can fake that, you’ve got it made.

    TheMacNut - Thanks very much!

    Aust - Prezactly. :)

Kosetsu - Boric gave him the drum on page 350. Tula’s top stays up because it needs to. :)

The Old Hack - Well, Tula’s actually got a bit of a following in the tribe among those who dig girls. Not that Zona hasn’t always had her fair share, but as we’ve noted before, Tula’s much more feminine, approachable and generally not as threatening to fragile male egos. So, while she’s not the superstar champion, she’s hardly the neglected kid sister.

Jean - Not sure how I should comment here … should probably read it again, slowly. =D

Gremalkin - He’s got some smoothy skills, all right, though it’s definitely gotten him into trouble back home. More on that, later.

    the captain - mm-yes. :) And thanks!

Ed Z - Extra cool! I loves my LOLsabertooths …

Sarge - I didn’t reject your idea outright, I just have my own grand rationalization which makes every bit as much/little sense.

Now, mind you the REAL reason is it’s a fantasy and the boobies stay up because they’re not real. Okay, everybody clear on that? Allright? All right.

    BUT

The BULLSHIT RATIONALIZATION is this: Erogenians as a race have a mutation that altered the structure of adipose (fat) tissue. Erogenians create multiple cells in a pattern that literally supports itself with stiffer cell walls and an internal honey-comb pattern that is less dense (lighter) and more self-supporting. It is not nearly as efficient at actually storing excess calories, but is much more efficient as an insulating agent. One reason why Erogenians wear less is that they literally don’t need clothes to stay warm unless it’s really really cold. It also tends to make them that much tougher when the rubber meets the road - or the flesh meets the fist, if you will. The same mutation has the benefit of making Erogenian gals more busty and bouncy.

And yes, I *know* it doesn’t really work that way. Please - no need to point that out. But that is what I came up with, in the dark night of my need to rationalize my silly fantasies.

Lora - Lora - Practical, shmactical. Gimme cute! :)

Stormhawk - It’s not leather. It’s a silk brocade. Tough as nails and gorgeous to boot. See the above bullshit rationalization re: Erogenian boobies.

ladygreensleeves - It’s Boric, who we met at the lookout tower with Rannik. We’ve already established that he’s got a serious thing for the younger princess. And thanks!

Lebbrin - He’s sincere, yes. And these two already have the kind of bond you get with someone you’ve seen through combat and dangerous times. They’ll never be indifferent to each other for the rest of their lives.

Sockpuppet - That lighting was not as easy to get as you think. Plus there’s some idiosyncracies of some of those material settings that I have to fix in post. Drives ya crazy. :)

LG - Nope. No more Tula Hot Stuff. Nope, never. She’s done being naked. I’m gonna be totally G-rated from here on out. Gonna try to get a job at Dizz-Knees …

    Not really. =D

calisto - I followed, but mainly because my mind twists and turns that way. :)

Uhl - You are correct. It is Boric.

Someguy - Oh, you’re right. You’d have to be blind and gay to be completely sexually indifferent to her. But yes, he’s not interested in making a play.

Clothing: the concept of ‘getting cold’ is an effete “civilized” phenomenon. More ‘natural’ peoples can self-regulate their body temperature. Australian Aborigines (or whatever the PC alias is these days) were tested and researchers found that they could lower their internal body temperature past the point where a Modern American would die of hypothermia (and the researchers WERE ‘freezing’ while their subjects slept naked on bare ground). The “Abos” lowered their ‘thermostats’ until the body was not burning calories and exhausting itself trying to toast their innards.

I’m an Alaskan, and the Eskimos USED to wear leggings that came above the knee and a LOOSE parka that hung to below the knee, and nothing else except footgear. The garments were not meant to keep cold out, but to maintain a bubble of warm air around the body.*

This Internal Thermostat ability is, IMHO, lost when the person grows up in temperature-controlled surroundings. If his dwelling can maintain a comfortable temperature his body does not have to regulate its own internal temperature. “City” Eskimos raised in Modern American environments get cold just as fast as Modern Americans do and have to wear the same layers of insulating clothing - just BEING an Eskimo does not give one the Inner Thermostat, being raised in conditions where all those layers of clothes are impossible to procure forces the body to maintain the IT ability.

*This also facilitated waste elimination - just spread the legs and let it drop. With Extreme Weather Clothing you literally have to strip naked to uncover the elimination ports. Not fun.

I hope I haven’t lost everybody: the relevance to this discussion is that the Erogenians can dress the way they do because they can adjust their own ITs. But I wonder about our Royal Heroines: those Palace quarters look pretty damned decadent and effete to me!

  23. JE Draft
    March 5th, 2010 at 2:43 pm

    Sarge - I said, “one reason.” :)

My grand BS rationalization was mainly meant to answer the issue about the boobies, anyway. And actually, if my personal experience and what I’ve read in some survival guides is true, even a civilized person can acclimate very well to extreme differences over a sufficient period of time. It also works in reverse. When she was living here in So Cal, a dear friend who grew up in Minnesota would get cold in temperatures where I, a CA native, was comfortable. Now she’s moved to Maryland, and though she doesn’t delight in the present snowstorms they’re having, she’s once again adapted to the icy winter climate with no problem. Bottom line is that Erogenians have the normal adaptation to their northern mountainous environment as well as the one I listed. So Zona can stand around in this picture

    http://www.soulgeek.com/comics/zona/HTMLpages/images/Solsticesketchincentive.jpg

in nothing but a fur cape and boots and not have any problems or even catch the sniffles. :)

As to their chambers in the Tower Of The Moon, they don’t generally live there for much of the year, especially Zona. She has her father’s wanderlust and doesn’t like being cooped up for long in one place.

Lighting looks excellent! As for being blind and gay to be sexually uninterested in Tula… I find her quite lovely, but, being gay, have no interest. Now, Mentl or Yatta-Ta, mebbie… Especially considering recent revelations!

Excuse me, Dragonson, I’m a Lady, not a Monster! *miffled look*

    *…nibblenibble*

As for the rest of y’all…if I weren’t in the middle of packing and moving, I’d (be able to) find my corset, put it on, and take a couple pics (of a relatively decent-enough-for-SoulGeek nature) to link for y’all to see. As it is…I have to keep packing ans schlepping my gear over to the new house. *le sigh*

I am ALL FOR the lack of clothes myself.

  31. Ted
    March 5th, 2010 at 4:51 pm

Jean, you can add a tension point to a corset and avoid having to lace it up in separate sections by; start lacing from the bottom of the corset up. When you get to right below the bust twist the left side of the cord, over the right side of the cord two or three times, before proceeding like normal through the rest of the eyelets (kind of like tying your shoes, but with extra twisting).

  32. Fred
    March 5th, 2010 at 5:16 pm

I don’t know how you’re doing it, JED, but you’re just getting better and better. And considering the high quality of the starting point, that’s just amazing.

  33. Ami
    March 5th, 2010 at 6:15 pm

Regarding the magical hovering nature of Tula’s top, I’m a little hesitant. If it went a little further up and thus had more curvature to cling to, I’d buy into the corset principle. I’m a corset wearer myself and, in my experience, they need a little bit to work with unless you intend to lace them so tightly that they “bite in” at the edges, which hers doesn’t appear to do. However, I prefer underbust styles that lace up the back rather than the front, so I can’t be sure. Still, assuming that said magically levitating tubetop would function back in reality, I would want one. In fact, I have yet to see anything that Tula has worn of which I haven’t approved. I still want those leather pants.

Anyway, comic relevance. I love Mentl here; he’s managing to be encouraging both to Tula and to Boric. Ipola may still be suspicious regarding the whole enchantment thing, but I don’t see how she could possibly not like him. The dialogue of this comic has a great deal of depth to it and it just keeps getting better.

If I can wait patiently for JED to bring out the new comix for us to drool over, I think the collective can wait patiently for a piccy of Jean in a corset.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have mental images to enjoy. ^w^

  37. yllwdrgn
    March 5th, 2010 at 7:24 pm

Lontime reader…not often do I comment. Who cares why the tops stay up??? I just like ‘em as JED creates ‘em…I say just enjoy the view! I am always amazed at the quality of the artwork here. Character development is absolutely great…makes this story so good. As for Mentl, I think we are just seeing the real man here. He is in an environment that has allowed him to be himself. Way cool!

Tula’s mine! I’ll take that dude down, man! DX *battle stance* hooah!

  39. Jean
    March 6th, 2010 at 5:05 am

My corset is pre-threaded, as it’s a back-laced one, not a front-laced. The “rabbit ears” (the loops you pull on to tighten it) are set to the midpoint, and are laced with a cross-over for a tiny titch of extra tension–you pull on the upper pair to tighten the lower half, and vice versa. Plus, the laces themselves are flat, which help further. (Alas, I did not make it, but mainly because I just haven’t had the time, *le sigh*.)

I’ll do my best to remember to find it, dig it out, squeeze myself into it…hmm…to wear a chemise or not to wear a chemise, that is the question…and then take a picture, or get a friend to take it for me, lol…

Although I am sure many of your readers share my impatience with one update a week, I am enjoying the teaser page with its higher resolution and lack of speech bubbles. It is sometimes nice to just admire the art without the “intrusion” of the story bubbles (please do not read this as a complaint regarding the story bubbles as they are of course what drives this excellent story).

Anyway, as I am sure many of your readers do, I try to anticipate the story regarding the art before you fill it in. I was not too far off base on the picture of Mentl walking by the bonfire, but I was way off base on this strip’s preview (I figured they would be talking about Mentl’s drum and maybe how it should be played).

Anyway, it is very nice to see the maturation of the relationship between Mentl and Tula, and the deepening bonds of their affection.

  43. The Macnut
    March 6th, 2010 at 10:09 pm

Hey JE, your previewing a panel of the week’s comic is really turning out to be a great idea. I think I’ll be using it for my own comic in the near future, if you don’t mind…

Well, it seems worthwhile to mention that us who read regularly would all lurve to see Jean in a black corset, and any other female member for that matter, it may help JE with a charachter even. This page was a wonderful work, once again, and i loved toe top storyling, but the Saber tooth caption there… my what a holler. Some things just need to be done yes?

@ Jean is that what we’re called? Wordsmith? I used to be famous for that on this old game i used to play. Lunatix it was… very good times.

Please, Goddess, don’t let Mentl sing at the First Dance. No good can come of it.

  47. Ami
    March 7th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Ah, my bad, I mistook your reference to a bodice for the corset. Mea culpa. I haven’t seen one with a cross-over before, but I might have to look; it sounds like it would help to maintain a more even amount of tension on the laces. Granted, I live in a fairly small town that’s laden with stores like Hollister, so you get nothing but a blank look if you mention a corset. I tried several “specialty shops” but finally had to order mine from England. It’s hard to be picky when you’re already having to deal with a conversion rate that is decidedly not in your favor. >.<

  48. Hwyla
    March 7th, 2010 at 11:33 pm

JED - I have to say that I’m actually enjoying the fewer updates - as long as you keep putting up a teaser. It’s been kind of fun to read all the speculation on what might happen next based on the scene you give us.

Now I might not feel that way if it lasts forever, but right now, so far, it has been rather fun :)

As for the discussion on Tula’s top - the lacings on the front don’t seem to be the important ones. I don’t see it tied off there. So, it seems to me the front is more ‘decorative’, with the business end of the lacing around back.

Tho’ I have to say it must have been pretty hard to beat the chains holding the sides of her leather pants together!

I honestly don’t know if we even have a local SCA branch… I’ll have to go scour the interwebz. Thanks though, that’s more help than I get out of most people. The last shop I tried led to a pretty awkward experience; the proprietor looked to be about 70 and I’m almost positive that she was a former madame based on her demeanor. Meep.

Lora, try a satin underbust. The satin is smooth enough that you can wear it under most clothes, but it still looks nice enough to be worn on the outside of something as well. Then, add in some knee high boots of a matching color and enjoy the staring. ;)

Presuming you’re in the States or southern Canada, and not sooooo faaaaar ouuuuut in the boonies that even the cows have to keep in touch via the internet, there’s bound to be a branch somewhere near you. Once you find one that’s reasonably close (I live in a kingdom where a 2 hour drive is a “moderate distance” to go to an event…and where it takes me an hour to cross from one county line to the next…so my idea of “reasonably close” may be a bit skewed, lol) then you can contact their Seneschal (branch president) or Chatelaine/Castellan (welcome-wagon person) for information. They should have a calendar (if nothing else, on the local kingdom’s home page) listing various events around the region, and those events often have names of contact people. Also look for things like “Merchantcrat/Merchantocrat” for people who can get you in contact with merchants who sell/make clothing, and the “Costumer’s Guild” or something similar name-wise for the local group of sewing enthusiasts.

Lastly, if you’re any good with a sewing machine (and are very very brave, lol), you can try to make your own. Here’s a website for an Elizabethan Corset pattern: http://www.elizabethancostume.net/corsets/pattern.html

And a website where you can buy a pattern for a Regency Era Corset: http://www.farthingales.on.ca/regency.php

Here’s a couple sources for corsets in the US: Brute Force Leather/Fallen Angel Fashions and Xcentricities.

John: “And actually, if my personal experience and what I’ve read in some survival guides is true, even a civilized person can acclimate very well to extreme differences over a sufficient period of time. It also works in reverse.”

That depends on what you consider EXTREME. I have worked (for short times) outside when the wind chill factor was literally off the chart. The chart only went to -150degreesF, and the base temperature was lower and the wind higher than was on the cross-reference baselines. Below -150F it doesn’t matter all that much…..

People can adapt to climate changes, yes. But it takes time - like what is a “sufficient period?” Even up here when it is +10F in October we wear jackets. When it is +10F in March-April we wear T-shirts for short ventures outside.

As for it working both ways, fershure fershure! I start to wilt at +65F, and I feel like I’m dying at +90F (and it can reach the +90s up here in the summer). Put me in the Mojave and all you would find would be a greasy puddle.

I would have problems in Erogenia; not with the temperature, with the exposed skin. To Native friends I am “Great White Whale Turn Red In Sun.” Hopelessly Caucasian…..
