I can see Ipola asking the High Priestess during First Dance if Mentl has put Zona under an enchantment - and getting an answer something like “love is always an enchantment”. The Zona/Mentl First Dance may turn out to be something of a showstopper - with everyone eventually watching and listening to these two.

Yep, my hijinks sense is definitely tingling. I agree with reddwarf that the Zona/Mentl first dance is going to be a showstopper, for several reasons. One of which is I think you’re gonna be able to cut the sexual tension between them with a knife. Yeah I know sexual tension is supposed to be between people who haven’t had sex yet, but c’mon people, you KNOW that’s not gonna matter with Mentl and Zona and THIS First Dance.

I love this comic.
But sometimes…I dunno. I’m not into dudes, but I thought the men should dance around the fire too. In Erogenia, held up as a thoroughly egalitarian society, it seems to me that the female gaze should get a fair showing as well.
There could be women drummers, male dancers…a free-for-all seems much more in the true Erogenian line. Having the women be the ones upon whom the visual element of the sexy dancing rests appears very negatively to me.
Just my two cents.

Moox, why then do “the guys in the band” at a dance with live music “get all the babes”, hmm? And why is “the drummer” third highest on the list of hawt bandmembers, right behind the singer and the lead guitarist? (Poor keyboardists always get short shrift, even though guys who play piano are usually correspondingly great at massage…)

…I’d like to see Mentl hesitate over accepting the drum, knowing about his magic and enchantment propensities. The guy will egg him on (gentle encouragement) and Mentl will make up his mind “I can do this, I can play without enchanting a whole BUNCH of Erogenians into *gulp* a mass orgy of epic proportions…mainly because there are no LYRICS involved, thank the local gods!”

Hopefully the drum’s will work as a focus (it’s his intentions that matter, not the lyrics) and it will create som… intresting effects. Go nuts Mentl. Hopefully with a sweet rythm like RamTa BoBa TaRamBa (+100 geek points to any one who gets the referense)

Just Say NO to Spontaneous Combustion. A real risk in this scenario. I also vote against “Burning Down the House” Duh. Anyone else know the pop band Groovelily? They have a number called “Gotta Give the Drummer Some” from the Striking 12 album. See y’all next Friday then I might have gotten out of my driveway, I’m hoping this stays under 2 feet this time.

Moox - It’s a largely egalitarian society but not obsessively so. I would never want any society I create to be perfect. Not to mention it’s a fantasy created by a heterosexual man who grew up in 20th Century America. Naturally, I’m going to skew things a bit to my own taste. Though intellectually I think it’s defensible to have the First Dance work this way because - speaking purely in SWEEPING generalities - men and women *do* have different modes of sexual attraction. Men are far more visual, hence the preponderance of visual porn designed specifically for men versus ladies’ erotica with is more complex and emotional. Women tend to be attracted to power, confidence and percieved virility as well as a romantic ideal. Pounding the skins, showing off your pecs and biceps and throwing out the beats is a very masculine thing to do, and they look at it as a very coequal part of the same ritual. Also, this is only First Dance, the ice-breaker. It’s very important as a social ritual, but there is also Second Dance and all the others afterwards that are open to both sexes, etc. In my mind , at least,it works out pretty well.

Meantime, hopefully we can get more of HIMYF done, and keep pushing on reformatting and re-post-working the first 48 pages for the print version. In some cases I am even re-rendering art that’s just (IMHO) unsalvageably sucky. So when you buy the book, I hope that you’ll think you got your dinero’s worth, as there will be some exclusive stuff and completely re-worked pages.

I agree the drumming should be especially interesting this year….
The men dance later, after the first dance, it is just traditional here for the men to begin by drumming and the women to begin by dancing, that’s all. Several pagan events have similar traditions, loosely organized where the males and females begin with different tasks and switch over later, mingle and share the work, etc, etc.
Wipeout was my first thougt too actually…but I wasn’t sure what all it might do!
I have been concerned also that Mentl may have accidentally “enchanted” Zona…but I don’t think so. I think the music just showed her his heart in a way it takes most of us a while to figure out about each other-a magical/musical shortcut if you will, just like music in the “real” world.
Mom is right to be worried though, she does not understand how Mentl does what he does so she IS going to take at least some minor precautions I am certain. So would I.

Zona and Mentl are both chained. Even if it’s only copper, Erogenian custom should keep any excess lust focused on the Initial Object Of Affection - this IS a SPECIFIC mating dance. Very possibly the lust might rise to new heights; hmmm… I WONDER if the sound of the drumming carried to Shealah’s quarters and inspired Yatta-ta… (see the Incentive if you don’t understand, and if you haven’t voted and seen the Incentive, Shame On You!)
Recalling what happened at Yanora’s when Mentl played with the musicians and they fell right in with him, I can see the Erogenian drummers following his beat and REALLY shakin’ it up.
Speaking of Yanora’s, all the girls fell in lust with Mentl, but by that stage of the evening who else were they gonna fall for? Maldik? Everybody with an SO or IOOA had already ‘retired.’ The poor wallflowers had not aimed their lust at anybody yet. If the SO or IOOA is present, I can see Mentl’s music boosting the pre-existing love/lust instead of transferring it all to to his person.
I predict a wild night ahead..;)

Mentl has already shown he can magick rhythm.. Remember, he used nothing but snaps to get the urr-nait (???) to want him so bad he could beat her senseless.
I also believe that this could get VERY interesting. I’ll have the popcorn ready for Friday…

Oh, this could definitely be interesting. I gotta wonder though, will his ‘make a lute sound like a plugged in axe’ abilities transfer to drums? Will that little bongo or whatever suddenly become a full on Drum Kit, sound wise?
Also, Lebbrin, I know he used snaps as a beat, but didn’t he also use lyrics? Or was the lyrical text in those comics not actually spoken?

Aust, he sung he lyrics. To cast his enchantments, I suspect the requirements are that he *has* to make some sort of music (even if it’s just snapping fingers for rhythm, since rhythm is very much a part of music), and recite/sing some sort of lyrics.
As Vito said, the rules differ from universe to universe, and in Erogenia, the songs Mentl learned as cover-tunes are “kick-ass enchantments.”

ok……..I am thinking he is likely to have the wits to suppress using his talents, but I wonder how Guns N Roses Paradise City or Kool & The Gang - Celebration would go over…….Hmmm and the queens reaction to his ability…this could turn out very good or very very bad…..I can’t wait!

Actually, I’d think there’s the possibility that if he uses his magic only to enhance things that are already there - temporarily, of course - and that the participants are willing, using magic to make things better or more intense could very well be acceptable. Of course, at this point, I doubt he has the control necessary to be that precise, and he certainly won’t be able to pick and choose based upon who wishes it to affect them. (Although he might be able to focus on just one person…)

Mentl’s hair looks great! I had a little surge of “yeah baby!” when I see it in the hot messy tieback. I am hoping desperately he will get into the moment of the dance and it gets even more free and messy. It is so hot!
