So, as I have said elsewhere, This week starts my dialing back to one full comic update per week for a month or two to give myself some time to catch up on other Zona projects and finish the first volume of the print comic. Still, I thought I’d tease you with the splash from page 350. Thoughtyou all would like to see Mentl in his new duds. Essentially, its a nice suit that had formerly belonged to a young Erogenian nobleman, but he outgrew them at age fifteen.

    First, excellent teaser.

Second, I guess I missed those comments. Please take all the time you need. Have you settled on a day for the once weekly updates? I only want to know so I can ready my refresh clicker on said day. Keep up the great work!

Aw the cats are playing! and folk are gathering for the dance! Or at least, the gals are… are the guys off somewhere else? Wrestling or what not.

…Considering you’re taking the time to craft a print version, hellz, yeah, we can wait! (Note, I didn’t say we’d wait patiently, lol…) Your webcomic is right up there with Girl Genius, Two Lumps, Looking For Group, and Goblins, the ones I HAVE to have hardcopies of. *bouncybouncies* I can’t wait until the first full-color Zona novel is available!

Oh! The HUMANITY! OH! I am so going to go through ZDT’s. I wish you were triplets. OH!

“Please sir! May I have some more?” Holds out empty dish.

    With greatest respect,

    Yada. Yada. Yada.

Quality takes time. I like time. So take all you need. Excellent terasser btw!

SIGH…………………… I’m sure the wait will be worth it.
Now: Did somebody give Mentl a haircut? I assume he has chucked his right bracer to better display Ipola’s favor.

Hmm, The great wizard strolls through the peaceful village… the natives are unaware of his great plan to capture the heart of the princess, and through her the kingdom… soon he will have full control of all he surveys, and his ultimate goal of starting a saber tooth cat breeding program to sell them to starlets back in Hollywood will come to fruition… Bwahahahahaha…

Ok.. maybe not… but it does give one ideas…

On another note.. Make sure that “Impact Comics” in Canberra, Australia gets hard copies for me to buy.

Jean, considering your choices are very similar to mine, I’d say you should add Girls With Slingshots to that list.

Well John, I can’t say I’m pleased, because it’s gonna be one hell of a wait every week. But your comic is worth it, so you can count on me to keep reading and keep loving your work.

This is a gorgeous splash panel, yet I do have one question: Shouldn’t his skin be crackling to a nice black crisp? That is one HELL of a bonfire.

Thank you for this great comic,
    Moox

Love the detail in the silver cuffs with grapevine pattern… Question is, are those pants leg cuffs or the tops of his boots turned down? I’m thinking boots since the pants seem to be split-side laced. Very cool effect.

Well while I am sad to hear it will only be once a week that I can get my Zona and Mentl fix I’m ESTATIC about being able to get Zona in hardcopy it will have a space of honor on my bookshelf with my John Ringo and Mercedeas Lacky, Kim Harrison and so many other great authors. I love you work so much thank you for sharing it with us and let us know when we can order the book, hell I’ll preorder if it helps. The splash page is lovely I think Mentl clothes look spiffy as heck…I want a set…and while your at I’ve got a list of other things you can send me around here somewhere I think magic bard powers are at the top of that list LOL. So again my thanks may your muse be kind and have a great week.

Take all the time you need. I’m sure all of us would rather have a page of AWESOME a week (month?) than have you burn yourself out trying to keep up with your current schedule.
By the by, this page is one of those AWESOME pages. Mentl’s outfit is great!! ^_^

what do you have for the shakes I will get from COZ withdrawal? Once a week? I need a free clinic or something!

Definitely waiting in anticipation. Also, for those fans of Girl Genius, I also read Gunnerkrigg Court. It updates the same days as Girl Genius, and is a subtle twist on the schoolgirl and schoolboy comics.

Jacqueline Carey is also a good novelist. Her Kushiel series is unique in how she has created something slightly different while holding to a world you might find around the corner (much like Zona’s world). Although, I will say, that because the main character is an anguissette (spelling? not sure), meaning she finds pleasure in pain….sometimes it’s a bit out there. But still good! Mercedes Lackey also holds most of my shelf (both with her 500 Kingdoms novels, her Valdemar novels), and her Elemental Magic novels. I also have John Flanagan with his Ranger’s Apprentice.

Am I the only person who saw the picture and thought that he probably wouldn’t be standing that close to the fire unless he was born in a volcano? Yeah, it’s night, but that’s a big fire…

That said, I want clothes like Mentl’s.

  16. Dondosan
    February 23rd, 2010 at 9:13 am

Jean and Moox - all excellent choices but please don’t forget Order of The Stick. Right now I have all of the OOTS books and take great pleasure out of re-reading them regularly. In fact, they’re some of the only books I brought with me to Korea. JED, a hardcopy of “The Challenges of Zona” will have a place of honor on my bookshelf. It’s been mentioned already but I’d like to repeat: please take your time. Quality, after all, doesn’t come from rushed work. Namaste.

    inspiration struck!

There was something in the air.
Mentil could feel it as he strode across the grass, shifting his body slightly as he made his new clothes comfortable. People were pairing off and meeting in small groups, voices low but filled with anticipation. The tone had changed from the wild partying of earlier - now it was more… subdued, like they were gathering their breathes for the next chapter.
Even the cats were affected - not quite fighting, but not settled. Swiping and snarling in warning at each other.

Maybe it was the Moon, he thought. She was hanging low and bright in the sky, full bodied and shining down on her children like a protective mother. Logically, Mentil knew that she was simply reflecting the light of the sunken sun, but right here and now, he could believe that her light came from within. That she was showing her love openly tonight.

The sense of anticipation was growing, Mentil decided. He wasn’t sure what was about to happen - wasn’t sure what was to occur, only that his love had told him to be ready for her when he had last seen her hours ago - but they way she had said it had set his nerves afire with wanting.

His earlier thought had been right, he decided. Mentil still didn’t know what, but -

There was something in the air.

By the way - which version of certain pages, shall we say, will be in the book?

  21. Lora
    February 23rd, 2010 at 10:11 am

Well, I don’t think Mentl or the two girls behind him will get cold this close to the bonfire. But considering his walking past it and away he’s probably not close enough long enough to burn in any way. ;)

Gonna miss two updates a week, but I’ll just have to be patient and read some more Foglio stuff and LFG in the meantime. :P

    February 23rd, 2010 at 1:53 pm

Lebbrin - Thank you, and Friday. :)

AdamZero - The men are there, just not in view. In fact, Mentl is walking toward where a few are gathering right now.

Jean - Thanks so much! Hopefully by April or early May. We’ll see.

Doc Alaska - Easy, dewd - you’re makin’ a baked Alaska outta yerself … ;)

Gremalkin - Thanks! Hope I can at least keep up the teaser stuff, so you’ll have something to look at on Tuesdays.

Sarge - Yes, Mentl’s been groomed. You’ll see it in greater detail in the next panel, but this is actually the first opportunity he’s had to shave in a mirror in weeks.

Speedhump - Mmmm - Not exACTLY the way I wrote it, but fun. Definitely fun. :) And don’t worry, we’ll be selling them online and I’m sure we can get them Down Under.

Moox - Don’t worry, it should only be for a month or so. A: Artistic license, and he’s moving.

Blue - It’s his boot cuffs, and yeah, that’s a neat texture from Daz for Michael’s Changing Fantasy Suit. Very stylish.

Damion - You get magick bardic powers AFTER I do. ;)

ladygreensleeves - Thanks! And it won’t be permanent. I’m as eager to tell the story as y’all are to read it, which is a nice state of affairs.

calisto - You can read the rest of HIMYF, which is one of the other Zona projects I’ll be finishing during the slowdown. (which won’t be a slowdown for me, really.)

Mish_Lady - I tried Gunnerkrig Court - and I liked it - can’t think why I don’t read it regularly. I think I just ran out of time to add more web comics. But one that I am now HOOKED on is Usula Vernon’s “Digger.” Absolutely marvellous art, story and characters. http://www.diggercomic.com/ It’s about an heroic wombat. Really.

Ghost - No, you’re not. And yes, Mentl was born in a volcano. One of the nifty bits of his past that I was going to reveal later on, but now you’ve ruined it. ;)

Dondosan - I love OOTS. Some people are simple and think that it’s stick figures because Rich Burlew can’t draw. Har-de-har-har. It’s some of the best art I’ve seen, and there’s folk out there who try to create comics with stick figures in imitation of Burlew’s distinctive style because they think this is “easy.” Har-de-har.

Wysiwyg - It’s late Summer, say around the middle of September. It’s high country and wooded, so it does get to around the mid 40s F overnight, but right now it’s just nice and comfortable, and these folk are acclimated to it. For them 70 F is quite warm. Plus you gots big old bonfires here …

Bill McNutt - Well, I DO still take any and all donations, but that isn’t why I want to update more. I wanna tell the story! :)

Kern - Again, not QUITE the way it’s written, but lovely. And close, especially the atmosphere. It’s not hushed or quiet, except as compared to the earlier feasting. And no, I don’t think I will put the bare boobies in the print book. I still want to be able to sell it to anyone without having to make too many caveats. I may co0me out with a print edition of the Hot Stuff if there’s sufficient demand for it, of course.

Lora - Be patient with the poor author. I must subsist on gravel and rainwater these days in order to feed my huge cat. :)

Actually, P-Chan’s such a big girl’s blouse and a whiner. But he and I are slowly getting used to each other, and it is nice (if inconvenient) to have him splayed across my lap while I attempt to work. He don’t care - cat don’tcare. And man, when you move him he sounds like you just said something mean about his mother …

Someguy - BWA-HAHA!!! That made me laugh out loud, pal. Thanks!

MaxBigFoot - I’m looking forward to publishing it - because it will mean the work is done and I have something tangible to show for it. :)

Balkin - you and me both.

    Dragonson - Thanks!

yO! Dude? Where is the Doc? He has been missing a long time. No one can find him. We broke into his apartment and all we found was his computer on the Zona page and a plate of baked alaska sitting in front of it. Did you break the 4th wall and do something naughty to him?

Ok, time for a moment of paranoid musing.

Zona is the daughter of the technical queen of Erogenia. Zona is a princess of Erogenia, and, if their ruling system works that way, technically the heir to the Erogenian throne.

Now, she is in love with Mentl, a worthy dude by all accounts (his skills well proven to us readers, Zona, and Tula)….but they haven’t exactly been proven to the rest of the Erogenian peoples.

Following that chain of thought, if Zona eventually pushes for Mentl to perform the Erogenian equivalent of marriage, could there be problems from other tribes who only see the mightiest female warrior of Erogenia marrying a rather weedy (in their eyes, even though by our terms he’s built OK) little man from who-knows-where? And into the most powerful clan/group/family/whatever in Erogenia?

Possibilities abound. Even though this is just random paranoid musing. Thoughts?

  30. hans
    February 23rd, 2010 at 2:50 pm

Considering that Zona got no living immediate kin because they got killed by another Erogenian, without (seemingly) the other tribes raising too much of a fuss. I´d wager that, apart from a scorned ex, or even a wana-be “future” he´s got no big probs.

Unless the most powerful magic user of the tribe there in the background decides he dared “bewitch” the champion. As her “Mom” probably already suspects.

I also like Questionable Content and Least I Could Do, among others (some of which are mentioned above). OOTS has been a favorite for a long time.

  32. tricksterson

Love Girl Genius, Gunnerkrigg and OOTS. Let me add Freefall to the reccomendation list, also Eerie Cuties.

  33. Jean
    February 23rd, 2010 at 7:21 pm

Moox, I read it and Something*Positive, and I enjoy them both very much, but they’re not ones I -have- to have hardcopies of. As for the bonfire, nah, he’s walking past it, not lingering by it. I’ve been at SCA events with the occasional big fire of that size, and you can stand to be around ‘em a few minutes before leaving. Or at least I can, lol. Besides, while the flames may be over Mentl’s head, the wood isn’t that high. If it were, yeah, it’d be putting out an excess amount of heat.

  34. Jean
    February 23rd, 2010 at 7:34 pm

I also enjoy OOTS, and if I may recommend then, A Girl And Her Fed (verrrry good storyline, the earliest stages of her art took a little getting used to but she’s redrawing those earlier pages now), The N00b (slow to update, but worth the wait), and (NOT WORK SAFE) Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic (did I mention NOT WORK SAFE?). The guy who does YAFGC doesn’t clean up his “sketch lines”, but he updates nearly every single day, and he’s put out a craptonne of story threads since its earliest, meandering plotline days. (Currently, there are 1367 strips, some of them many panels long…and if he put it into a book format, even with the sketch lines still in place, I’d buy it, lol.)

…Ya know, if we’re pimping all these lovely comics, we should probably tell their artists so they’ll get a fuzzy warm, knowing those who appreciate their works are spreading the news. (Speaking of which…PSSSST, hey, JED! I’ve been pimpin’ ya to other people!)

I miss Perry Bible Fellowship. in addition to the many fine strips mentioned, I also enjoy HardGraft and Templar, AZ, Courting Disaster and Evil, Inc., the Whiteboard and Dr. McNinja, Menagea3 and Oglaf, SMBC and the Werewif. Oh and anyone who decries stick figures would have to give up xkcd and life’s too shortwhen you’re an old fart like me. Hanging in there until Firday - ICWT

  36. Hwyla
    February 23rd, 2010 at 9:09 pm

Yeah! Mentl looks pretty good in his new duds! I am a bit surprised at the choice of just one bracer. Is it to show off the sign of the Queen’s favor?

One thing I DO like is just how apparent his copper chain has become, now that it lies on black leather (instead of brown). This is really the first it has been truly noticeable.

As for our ‘other’ fave comics (that we would love to have in hard copy) - I’ll also admit to a weakness for Girl Genius and add in that I would love a copy of my very own of Brathalla.

As long as everyone else is recommending webcomics, I’d like to toss in a shout-out for ‘Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire.’ It starts out in a vaguely Garfield-eque way, with largely unrelated strips about a Seer who lives with his talking cat, but once the story starts to take off it. Never. Stops!
Check it out sometime if you haven’t, you won’t be sorry.

John: Throw my name in to the pot of your fans who wish you well in your other creative endeavors…and yet tend to gnaw on mouse cables and keyboards (and damn near anything else in range) when we await you updates. ;)

For those struggling with Zona withdrawal symptoms, another worthy webcomic is the relative newcomer Erfworld - it was originally hosted on the OOTS website and is both well drawn and had an interesting story line…

  41. Lora
    February 24th, 2010 at 8:42 am

I’ve got Foglio stuff for all days a week. ;) m-w-f Girl Genius, t-t-s Myth Adventures and sunday What’s New. And Buck Godot is always good for a re-read.

Perhaps I should get back into reading Abe_Kroenen only LiveJournal while Zona slows down…? *thinking*

  42. Lora
    February 24th, 2010 at 8:44 am

And it should have been ‘on LiveJournal’ of course… *sigh*

And I, too, have been spreading the word of Zona. Hopefully she’ll soon start reading it and be captured forever. He he he…

One for Pedants corner, - why does the moon have exactly the same cratering as Earths’?

  44. JE Draft
    February 24th, 2010 at 6:01 pm

Timotheus - Or an unreasonable facsimile … :)

Doc Alaska - Alas, poor Doc, I knew him Horatio. ;)

Sleepinin - So long as the kings and queens of Erogenia pledge their fealty to her leadership, she is the queen of Erogenia. They usually refer to her as “liege lady, ” but she is far more than a titular queen. (couldn’t resist! ) And yes, possibilities for conflicts abound. Nonetheless, since it would be, by normal Erogenian custom, years before the two could walk the Silver Path, it’s not something our pair needs to be overly concerned about at the moment.

hans - Since it nearly caused a war with the Bear Tribe, I would hardly say that there was “hardly any fuss” when Thantic and Ipola’s sister and brother were killed. Ipola found a very unique way to balance the cha that did not involve bloodshed.

Hugh - I read Questionable Content every day, and I think it’s very interesting how he’s chosen to change his style of art over the years. At first it was so stylized it was almost like stick figures itself, and now even more realistic than just six months ago.

tricksterson - Great - now I have to look those up, too. Also, there’s
Dumm Comics, with Skadi, for lovers of sexy, over-the-top satirical barbarian warrior women.

Jean - Something Positive is one of those that I read almost despite itself. It’s smart, funny and extremely off-the-wall, but sometimes …

And yes, thank you very much for spreading the word about this little contribution to the debasement of western culture. I do appreciate it.

Hwyla - Brat-halla is awesome! I love their take on all the old pantheons, and having the Eye Of Odin as an arch-villain is a stroke of genius. I don’t know how many of you remember that there was actually a storyline years ago in Marvel’s Thor book where the Eye Of Odin actually took Thor on a vision quest … and it turned out later it’d been bullshitting the whole time.

Addup2 - It’s really amazing. Don’t forget the deer-headed man (healing potion gone terribly wrong …)

Soulworker - thanks a lot! And I read Erfworld regularly. Another fish-out-of-water story, but a very odd and wonderfully creative take on the whole concept of war, peace, loyalty, love, free will and peeps.

Lora - Phil Foglio is my hero, as I’ve said before. Now he’s colorized the MythAdventures book I originally bought hm-hrrherumm years ago, so yes, something every day. And thanks, my minions - go forth, convert by the sword! And if not the sword, the twinkie. And if not the twinkie, the rubber chicken …

KeiferRhys - For the same reason there are horses, blue skies, pine trees and musk oxen. Because up to a few million years ago, Earth and this planet were completely identical in absolutely all respects. Even as its natural laws and probabilities made slightly different choices from ours, it still stayed almost the same up til about thirty thousand years ago when some key events diverged history and geography sharply, and the paths of all sentient species were changed drastically. Now, those crater patterns on the Moon are truly seas as our ancient astronomers imagined them to be, and the land of the Moon is populated by at least two races of humans, and many diverse creatures roam the caverns and the bright silver surface, and empires struggle for dominance. Why? Well, mostly because its a send-up of E.R. Burroughs, and despite its impossibility, I think it’s just a lot of fun.

  45. Hwyla
    February 24th, 2010 at 11:07 pm

JE - I do really love Odin’s Eye! I even felt a bit sorry for him when it became obvious that he has a soft spot for Frieda (and why shouldn’t he? he WAS once part of Odin) But my favorite is Hod. Can’t help it - love sarcasm.

And now I’m wondering whether you have ever been involved in the SCA? IF not, perhaps you ought to be told that the ‘rubber chicken’ is actually used to whack punsters (at least it was in AnTir - Jean would have to say whether it was the same elsewhere). After they have been formally recognized with a chicken whack they must wear a ‘favor’ (usually a little piece of fabric with a symbol on it) on their belt, so that all who abhor puns may be forewarned avoid them.

So maybe doing battle with a ‘rubber chicken’ might not get you more viewers. ; p

  46. BIll

Oddly, I have no problem imagining Yatta-ta (or whatever his name is) wielding a rubber chicken.

  47. Jean
    February 25th, 2010 at 5:22 am

Ooh, yes, Erfworld! Boop me–how could I have forgotten Erfworld??

  48. Jean
    February 25th, 2010 at 5:30 am

Hwyla, I’m An Tirian, so I can definitely confirm the WOAW and the TWIT of it, regarding the rubber chicken. If you’ve been whapped with the rubber chicken by a WOAW for reciting an horrific pun in public, you become a TWIT…and if whapped again, WOAW betide thee for thine impertinence.

(WOAW stands for the Woeful Order of the Ailing Wit…and TWIT is a Temporary WOAW-In-Training.)

I think they had a few WOAWs in the West (which oddly enough is south of An Tir) and quite possibly in Outlands or Atenveldt…but those may just be rumors.

JED, S*P…yeah, I agree with you. Some parts of it were just painful to read. Others, however, made me actually laugh out loud–rather much at certain points–which is unusual for me, and thus extremely funny. Some of it’s creepy and some of it’s mesmerizing. And, holy cramoly, there’s a craptonne of it to read! (An imperial craptonne at that, not just a metric craptonne!)

…I’m hoping your own webcomic becomes that prolific.

…For the record, I am not a WOAW. I almost got whapped, but though the head of the Order heard my best pun, the kind that got me: a) dead silence, b) a massive group groan from the 150 or so feasting gentles in attendance, c) more dead silence, and d) a STANDING OVATION for it…well, he shook his head (covered with its rooster-crested cowl, no less), and said, “Did you HAVE to give her a standing ovation? You just gave her Bardic Immunity, milords and miladies!”

So a (chicken) pox cannot fall on me; I am immune to its rubber-y!

Hwyla - I have not been active in SCA for a very very long time. I was in Dreibergen, as you know, and the queen of Caid in those days was very tiny and instituted a .25 tax for using the word “short” in any public announcement or pronouncement - including the king, the herald or anyone. The herald making that announcement, during that announcement and after he’d been given license to use the word just to identify had to be fined an additional $1.50 for using it repeatedly in his subsequent notes and announcements. It was comedy gold. We never had a rubber chicken.

Bill - in certain circumstances, neither do I

Jean - thanks. I have a lot of story to tell, so we’ll definitely be in the high hundreds before too long.

Is this chicken administered at the evening revel, or during the tourney? Because if it wasn’t at night, it would be daylight rubbery.

JED, I have–with my own eyes–seen said petrochemical chicken wielded by a magnificent dame (Dame Rowan, no less)…so technically that would be broad daylight rubbery.

    *ducks & runs…or maybe waddles*

Jean - I like ‘Petrochemical,’ but following it with plain old ‘chicken’ is lame. How about “Brooder” or “Broodyhen?”

One of my favorite expletives is/was “Fornicate With A Neoprene Waterfowl.”
And “Attempt Airborne Copulation With A Rotationally Motivated Perforated Pastry.”
