ahh the mysterious bells
February 13th, 2010 at 9:23 pm
First? Her bells? Just take one of those shields off the wall, it’ll impress everyone.
February 13th, 2010 at 9:26 pm
Looks like Mom is very pleased with that answer.
February 13th, 2010 at 9:32 pm
Just like a modern woman looking for her shoes…
February 13th, 2010 at 9:40 pm
Who *doesn’t* keep a horned helmet in their dresser?
February 13th, 2010 at 9:42 pm
Who *doesn’t* keep a horned helmet in their dresser?
Or a dinosaur skull hanging on the wall…
February 13th, 2010 at 9:48 pm
“My bells!”
Say what?
February 13th, 2010 at 10:04 pm
hmmmmm bells “sounds” interesting.
February 13th, 2010 at 10:24 pm
Rings on her fingers, bells on her toes, she shall have Mentl wherever she goes!
February 13th, 2010 at 10:29 pm
That hairstyle on her is particularly fetching, especially with the ornament.
February 13th, 2010 at 10:30 pm
Did anyone else notice that she is wearing green?
February 13th, 2010 at 10:47 pm
From the decoration of her room it would appear she’s partial to the color. And I wonder if the bells signify something in paticular like the chains do? Or perhaps it has to do with a particular type of dance she plans or preforming with or for Mentl.
February 14th, 2010 at 12:06 am
…and she’s acting like an over-amped teenager. ( I have two in the house, so I should know) I think she desperately wants to knock someone’s socks off.
February 14th, 2010 at 12:21 am
Little tinkle bells or big ol’ cow bells?
Personally I’m looking forward to the yodeling contest.
February 14th, 2010 at 12:40 am
@Wysiwyg ….Always needs more cowbell. But I don’t think it’d be accurate..No, Yatta comes into the dance blazing drunk with a bandolier of cowbells.
February 14th, 2010 at 12:45 am
Hm, this is the first time we’ve seen her with bare wrists I believe. I know the Urtts took off the bracers, but then she had shackles on and the next time we see her she has the bracers back. Now that I notice it, it looks a little odd after so long.
February 14th, 2010 at 12:53 am
We learned at Yanora’s ball when she was dressed by the Kivalians that her bracers were enchanted to protect her AWAY FROM HOME. In the home valley she doesn’t need them. Must be nice to air the wrists out occasionally.
February 14th, 2010 at 12:56 am
Yeah, that’s how I noticed it. I was checking up on the reference to Zona wearing green since I remembered she wore green at the ball too.
February 14th, 2010 at 1:45 am
Yeah, I didn’t recognize her at first, lol…has to be the lack of bracers. But, boy, she does look pretty! And I, too, think she’s trying to get geared up for a special dance, one meant to knock Mentl’s socks off.
February 14th, 2010 at 3:57 am
A rather knowing look from Mom — methinks the bells have rather more significance than simply getting gussied up for the dancing. It seems it’s been awhile since Zona had a serious relationship — probably hasn’t worn them in a long time. I’m enjoying seeing Zona dressed up Moon Tribe style — also enjoying seeing the art and decorations and textiles in her rooms.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:21 am
The Bells, The Bells
Fun to see Zona acting girly for a change. I too think that these bells are significant. I like the similar headresses Ipola and Zona are wearing, I assume Tula has something similar?
February 14th, 2010 at 6:04 am
Regardless of the true nature of the bells, it has made me curious that she finds them important enough to be stressed when she did not find them. I am looking forward to the revelation. Hopefully it is a ritual for the silver chain. That would be awesome !
February 14th, 2010 at 7:10 am
ah, the bells…the tintinabulation that so musically wells
From the bells, bells, bells, bells,
Bells, bells, bells
From the jingling and the tinkling of the bells.
(what can I do? Poe said it best…)
February 14th, 2010 at 7:48 am
Meow?, maybe a gift from dad, meow?
February 14th, 2010 at 9:17 am
I wonder if they’re of some ritual significance or just personal. Either way obviously important to her.
February 14th, 2010 at 9:52 am
on the note of green, her sheets, the big shield, and I wager that floor rug under the bed; all green as well.
Green: Fertility, life, nature, renewal, rest.
gotta love the internet.
February 14th, 2010 at 10:43 am
That carpet looks blue to me, but could be my monitor, also I love that under her bed is a morningstar and a skull cup, methinks warrior princess might be a little understatement? I didn’t recognise Zona at first either, I think it’s the look of concern, until now she has had nothing to worry her much. Besides Tulas injury, and we didn’t get a close up then.
February 14th, 2010 at 11:41 am
JE, respectfully, I didn’t recognize it Zona at first either, and I believe I know why: She and Tula have their mother’s chin, but as of panel two it’s noticeably absent.
That, and she’s got her hair up.
February 14th, 2010 at 11:42 am
…it was Zona…
February 14th, 2010 at 12:12 pm
So, okay, I’ve just been re-reading some highlights, and let me correct myself: Whereas Tula always has her mother’s chin, sometimes Zona does, but sometimes not. However, whenever I’m picturing the full trio (with Mentl), what I usually envision is the banner that graces the top of the latest page, showing Zona in the forefront, and Tula and Mentl further back. And Zona’s chin matches Tula’s, which in turn matches their mother’s.
February 14th, 2010 at 12:39 pm
Great page as always. I don’t know about the confusion, I assumed it was Zona from the start.
Loved the text between panels 4 and 5. LOL The skull had a name. “Poor Yafa, I knew him well.)
Bells…… anyone else thinking Kirk and a certain green skinned dancer??? (Sorry, it IS Soulgeek after all.)
February 14th, 2010 at 2:03 pm
Beautiful John. Love the obvious desperation and distress. Hm, bells…
February 14th, 2010 at 2:18 pm
She wants to be there with bells on I guess…
February 14th, 2010 at 3:31 pm
She looks so damn adorable here! I just wan to give her a big hug
bellsbellsbellsbellsbells….
February 14th, 2010 at 3:59 pm
Her bells?
February 14th, 2010 at 4:26 pm
New song idea (parody anyway). Hells bells! Zona’s coming for you *pictures urrts running*
February 14th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
Silver chain is the third step; it goes copper, bronze, silver, gold, so actually bronze would be next.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:29 pm
…Did anyone else notice in panel 2 that she had tossed something ELSE besides the helmet? That right beforehand, she had tossed a knife?
Comparing the mantel knotwork and decorations in panel 1 to panel 2, there isn’t anything else it could be, since there aren’t any objects or shadows that could be it, and it is very much knife-shaped and knife-colored (for an iron blade, perhaps even damask patternwelded)…
As for the mace under the bed, well, I have zero clearance under my bed, but I do have a katana, a smallsword, and bow and arrows on my walls. the cup, however…this is a low-tech society. Most people don’t keep drinking cups under their beds. It was far more common in medieval times (and indeed all the way up until World War II) to keep a chamberpot under the bed. Some of which could be quite ornate in design, if rather plebian, even base, in function.
Which, knowing Zona’s contempt for the Urtts, and one presumes for her other hated enemies…isn’t that far-fetched an idea.
@.0 …I think I just snapped my brain. Anyone got an ice pack?
February 14th, 2010 at 5:30 pm
…But hey, if JED wants to call it a “cup” then we’ll call it a “cup,” too…
February 14th, 2010 at 6:25 pm
Well, I didn’t recognize her in the first panel either, but then I hadn’t expected new clothning, new hair style and headband.
But my, do she look lovely.
Perhaps mom can help her find her bells? I wonder what those bells are for and what meaning they hold for Zona. (Hair thing, belt, hands…??)
February 14th, 2010 at 7:15 pm
@Jean - I prefer your idea that it is a chamber pot - which even makes more sense, since it was once a ‘bad guy’s’ skull
And I agree - that is most certainly a knife flying through the air
February 14th, 2010 at 7:31 pm
O_O
Seriously, I didn’t even recognize her as Zona until Ipola walked in.
Wow, talk about a change in wardrobe. @_@
February 14th, 2010 at 7:44 pm
L O L !!!
I have the slight suspicion the queen is more than slightly amused to see the champion of the moon tribe, princess and her daughter THIS girly.
Great panel, can´t wait for the next.
February 14th, 2010 at 8:15 pm
Hmmm. Just had a thought about the unexpected girly-ness. Could perhaps Mentl be bringing more balance to her spirit simply by being someone for Zona to love that she doesn’t have to compete with?
February 14th, 2010 at 10:21 pm
I recognized her the whole time, but I can’t wait to see what the bells are for!
February 14th, 2010 at 10:51 pm
Maybe Mentl said something about “be there with bells on?”
February 14th, 2010 at 10:58 pm
BTW, the chamberpot theory gets my vote too. Though aren´t they supposed to have some type of lid to keep the odors somewhat in?
Oh and no plumbing? Yikes. That´s about what makes me hate the middle ages the most, and rarely gets appropriately mentioned in fantasy settings too.
February 15th, 2010 at 12:29 am
TheLastGarou…this is the same Mentl who called Zona “sweet” after all…and we do try to live up to (or down to) the images of us which are held by others, particularly those whom we deeply admire and trust…
Me, I’m curious to see what Mentl does for a change of clothes! He’s been wearing those pants, taken from the half-urtt woman’s quarters during their escape, all this time. I’d think *some* of his clothes were left in the horses’ packs, and he probably just lost the set he was actually wearing during that whole mess…but which pieces of clothing? and would anyone loan him anything more appropriately Erogenian for the dance half of this impromptu festival?
And why do I suddenly have an urge to pop a big bowl of popcorn and munch it, either when viewing the latest (tres cool) incentive comic, or whenever Zona finds her bells and shows us all why everyone is so eager for Tula to do some dancing? (Because I’m sure Zona is close to being just as good as Tula apparently is…)
February 15th, 2010 at 12:54 am
Well, I have been bizzybizzybizzy this weekend. And tomorrow is not a workday for me, being spent in company with a special someone. Tuesday’s update may therefore be Tuesday night. And therefore let me once again thank you all for the lively discussion herein. Because I am exhausted, I will merely touch on a few of the points you have observed and hope no one is offended that this time there were no personal replies.
Yes, it is Zona. and the fun bit is that *nothing besides her hair and her clothing has changed at all. I didn’t change the texture, or modify the mesh or anything. It’s exactly the same As the previous page. So, there. And, at no time from page 1 to this have I changed those things other than modifying her texture with a realism package I bought in `06 merely to bring out more depth and surface detail. So, if you think that at times her chin looks like it has a cleft like Ipola’s or Tula’s, you’re just observing shading on the ever so slight indent along the point of her jaw.
Also, the color of her top is a pattern of gold and *blue,* not green. Likewise the rug and the bedspread and the shields. It is a slightly teal-shaded blue in some cases, but definitely not true green, and her top is almost a navy with the gold damasking. The reason it reads green is because of the yellow candle and firelight throughout the scene. Look at her eyes.
Also, the skull cup under the bed is a cup, not a chamber pot. (The chamber pot is the earthenware thing in front of and to the screen left.) It’s not given a trophy spot because Yafa was a pig, (see “Zona And The Children Of The Moon.”) and he didn’t even die that well. She doesn’t store it under there normally, though - she kicked it accidentally before she left and nobody touched it since.
Yes, she threw a knife and the helmet. Also, on the ground are several boxes, baskets and containers which did not contain the bells.
Look forward to new goodies, though I think no more tonight or tomorrow.
February 15th, 2010 at 1:47 am
Ha ha, JE, some of us stay up late checking our favorite comics!
She’s so cute, the hairstyle is stunning! Though I do find it a bit strange that Zona pulls her hair BACK for dancing and leaves it down when fighting dinosaurs when it could lethally get in her way…..
February 15th, 2010 at 7:56 am
Well, she has clearly not read the guide on what to do with hair in fighting situations.
(A friend wrote/draw such a guide; very funny).
And to the color symbolism discussion, you forgot the most important aspect of green. Green means hope.
And now that we know Zona is wearing blue, blue means faith.(And a whole lot of other things…).
February 15th, 2010 at 9:47 am
I’m in the same ballpark as LastGarou. I think Ipona’s reaction may have a strong something to do with how uniquely girly Zona’s rummaging around for her bells is. Zona’s behavior also reminds me of several more modern warriors I’ve known that are so squared away and on task all the time… except when they’re in a place and surrounded by people that are ‘home’ to them. They can allow themselves to relax; maybe not completely, but enough that they can sometimes not be recognized by those that don’t normally see them in this light.
February 15th, 2010 at 10:12 am
is there any way to get a hold of “Zona and the children of the moon” or the other two books anymore? without going to CA, I’m ontarian.
February 15th, 2010 at 11:13 am
Zona looks gorgeous in that second frame. The low light and the hair really do look terrific.
February 15th, 2010 at 11:17 am
I do agree Zona is acting very girly, like a teen getting ready for her first date to a dance. Where’s this, where did I put that, mom I can’t find my bells! Great job on her look, very beautiful and she does seem softer. Candle light and being in a relaxed envoirment, like home, could explain that too. Keep up the great work

February 16th, 2010 at 11:34 am
I love Zona’s face in the second panel. She looks different, but I really like it.
February 17th, 2010 at 1:07 am
{shudders} “DT’s! Must have…..Zona….FIX. ” {Facial Tic} “MUST HAVE ZONA FIX!” {Shudders}”I know! I will win the lottery and pay you a million a year to publish zona 5 days a week! YES!” {facial tic} “Yes! Yes! YES! Must have ZONA FIX!!!”
“Mwa! Ha! Haa! Ha! Ha!” {shudders} “HAA!”
