January 5th, 2010 at 1:42 am
Darn called it wrong.
January 5th, 2010 at 1:47 am
Well, Zona did have that “I got you now!” look in the last panel of the last page.
Still, Yatta-ta’s doing the gracious loser act now. Let’s see if he can be persuaded to stay long enough for us to learn his story.
January 5th, 2010 at 1:50 am
OK, so it was more toward the middle. Details, details.
January 5th, 2010 at 2:28 am
Why do I somehow suspect that Yatta will now attempt to retreat back into his Fool persona in self-defence?
In any event, it was close, so very, very close. Well done, Yatta-ta. You haven’t lost any of my respect from this.
January 5th, 2010 at 2:28 am
Zona is totally thinking “No wait! You can’t go! That’s the first time anyone’s given me a decent challenge in years!”.
January 5th, 2010 at 2:44 am
not that he had much respect to begin with after all if left to non-sword fighting zona has already won three or is ti four fights with him already. and just noticed this first need of it from me but constructive critique from me ever. you do people landscapes and stroy really well but the swords crossed the line for me. they are just more complicated than that. I used a different program 3-d max but for example can you take the small sections of the hilt and rotate them indavidually from everything else. that would give the sword a little more of a realalitic look. never used the program you used so i am not sure what it can and cant do.
January 5th, 2010 at 3:08 am
Okay, I gotta say, the look on Yatta’s face says ‘heart attack imminent’. I mean the guy needs to do a few cool down stretches or he’s gonna get sick.
January 5th, 2010 at 3:39 am
Not bad, Yat. Not bad at all.
I bet not many could walk away from such a challenge to Zona with only a bruised ego.
January 5th, 2010 at 5:16 am
Way to go Mr. Y
Will be intresting to se the development.
I don’t think they will let him go
I still hope the queen makes him
uncomfortable by flirting with him !
January 5th, 2010 at 5:30 am
Looks like Zona won on physical endurance
January 5th, 2010 at 5:56 am
Awesomesauce ^_^ nifty ending to a great swordfight
love the last panel, where Yatta slowly starts to verbally back away from everyone, whereas Zona keeps trying, and failing, to interrupt him XD
January 5th, 2010 at 6:26 am
I guess Zona wins this one.
I wonder what would happen in a rematch…?
Perhaps some day we’ll get one.
January 5th, 2010 at 6:40 am
@ RandomnessIncarnate - Those are wooden practice swords, carved to be rounded/blunt, and painted silver. (If there were even the slightest patterning to them, I’d swear they were wrapped in duct tape, lol.) In fact, they look very close to the rattan swords used in the SCA. They’re meant to only suggest the idea of a real sword, while at the same time be clearly NOT a real sword, to indicate very clearly how this is a play-fight, not an in-earnest-fight.
…As for Yatta-ta losing…he’s losing with a great deal of graciousness. I’d like to think Zona is going to have him stay a bit longer, and I definitely hope JED gives us more of his background. From a 2 dimensional buffon, he’s evolving quite nicely into an intriguing character, and I hope our wonderful artist/storyteller runs with it, at least for a little bit.
I am lividly curious to see how the ladies (and gents) of Erogenia will handle this moment. Yatta-ta is clearly good, if he can hold his own for so long against their champion. After all, there are different ways to win. I’d say he’s most likley won the respect of the Moon Tribe, even if he didn’t win the actual bout…and the respect of Erogenian warriors is not a small thing.
So while he may walk away having lost the duel, I think by the time he leaves the Valley of the Moon, he’ll have gained at least some of the reputation he came seeking…and the Moon Tribe *might* respect him just enough to downplay his initial absurd belief their chief princess was a virgin. (But I wouldn’t count on it, *snerk*…)
January 5th, 2010 at 6:47 am
Lol, to Yatta-ta’s last words. That man needs to losen up a bit, I think.
(Duct tape? heh, yeah, but I don’t think they got any, lol).
January 5th, 2010 at 7:12 am
I agree that he is taking his loss graciously. It seems that the Kivalians would possibly react to losing to a barbarian-and especially a barbarian woman-worse than this. Especially with how the one priest near the beginning of the story was ranting and raving about the unclean barbarians and how they are “unclothed.”
Initial disbelief followed by a reaction of “I just want to get out of here” added with “I have to get out of here now”….when now everyone wants to talk to him most likely because he lasted so long!
Great job JED! The only thing that would possibly make it better is Tor riding in with some bull headed warriors and our honorable friend to tell Ipola of the impending doom…
January 5th, 2010 at 7:43 am
And thus, we gain the fourth member of our fine adventuring party…
(Y’all don’t really think this much was invested in character development to just let him walk away do you?)
January 5th, 2010 at 7:51 am
woohoo! what a fight! I hope Yatta-ta stays for the BBQ and we hear more about him
January 5th, 2010 at 7:53 am
I doubt Yatta has won the hearts and minds of all the Moon Tribe based on the comments from the crowd in the last comic. I figure about a thrid of them are still unimpressed or refuse to acknowledge his skill. I am wondering just how deep the Erogenian resentment of Kalavians goes.
Not that they don’t have reason of course…
Maybe when Delll arrives at the feast he and Yatta will have words?
January 5th, 2010 at 7:54 am
Hehe, it seems to me that Zona is thinking of calling Yatta-Ta to the feast!
January 5th, 2010 at 8:24 am
Ok, this just doesn’t flow! Both Zona and Yatta had their swords raised high for the final strikes. Assuming both were performing a downward swing (which the movement suggest is the case), the taller opponent would be the one disarmed with the sword flying high in the air. The only way Yatta could have been the one disarmed that way would mean that Zona and Yatta RAN AT EACH OTHER with swords held over their heads, which is the very height of folly for both of them. Ofc, this is (by Jed’s own admission) an “impossible” fight where they mutually disarm and catch each other’s swords. Also, maybe Zona just wrested Yatta’s sword away while he was looking up (offscreen) and then caught her own from the air. Considering their differences in strenght, this is the most likely scenario.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:24 am
That was a fine duel, for sure. And let no man (or woman) say that Yatta can’t hold his own where it counts.
Note, however, that Zona IS trying to say something over his babble. Any thoughts?
January 5th, 2010 at 9:07 am
That guy is laying it a bit thick…
January 5th, 2010 at 10:04 am
Heh heh…nice!
So JED, how are you feeling?
January 5th, 2010 at 10:23 am
He can’t stay, even if they begged him to. He gave his WORD. He swore an oath to leave when the fight was done and never to return. Say what you will about him, but the character, as written so far, takes such things as honor, sworn oaths, and one’s word, seriously. Sometimes it’s the only thing you have and now, for him, it’s the only thing he has left.
January 5th, 2010 at 10:31 am
@Uhl - There’s nothing to suggest that the sword went flying up in the air. The two of them are already 10+ feet up in the air, so a sword that went flying in any direction except straight down would have to fly through the air for a significant length of time. Since there’s no reference point on the image, and since there’s no real way to tell which way the sword is moving, we can assume that it perhaps went out parallel to the ground, if you like.
January 5th, 2010 at 11:40 am
Well I was kinda rooting for Yatta, but all things considered Zona’s win is no great surprise. I WOULD like to think that he broke a sparring record with her though. All in all, another great page JED. And as always you leave us wondering what’s next and begging for more. Nice touch that YAtta is sweating like a rainy day and Zona isn’t showing so much as a drop.
January 5th, 2010 at 12:33 pm
long time reader first time commenter
for him giving his word to depart after the fight. It was because he entered the land uninvited.. if invited however, he could then stay.. which is what I think will happen. but then JED has had a way ofdoing things differently from what we expect.
January 5th, 2010 at 12:34 pm
Kamatu - Well, you had a 50-50 shot.
SamuraiDemonPuppy - I will say this - one way or another, eventually you will learn his story.
The Old Hack - He seems on his way out, though, if nobody stops him. And as to what else he says, right or wrong, well — as a diplomat he’s a terrific swordsman.
Hypertrophic - That is part of what she is thinking, yes.
RandomnessIncarnate - True, and if anything Yatta-ta’s stock has gone up. Though their previous encounters could not be counted as fights since he didn’t even try to defend himself. And the swords are supposed to look fake. They’re wooden practice swords. I use Poser and there’s not too much real modelling that you can do with it.
Adamzero - He did overextend himself just a bit - though not too many guys have ever lasted long enough to get that winded.
hans - Indeedy.
Gremalkin - Her Majesty may not think him her type, but on the other hand she was checking out his butt …
wysiwig - He’s a great athlete, but she’s … Zona.
Leotrak - Thanks! And it gets continued on Friday.
Moox - Ah, you’ll have to wait to see that one.
Jean - How will the ladies handle him, indeed? Well, I will, for the moment, leave that to your imagination. Imagine away.
As to their forgetting the biggest belly-laugh that they’ve had in years? Not gonna happen.
Lora - “Loosen up?” Surely you jest! And duct tape is like The Force: It has a light side and a dark side, and it binds the Universe together.
Mish_Lady - Wait - it does get better, although Tor and Tethik are still many miles away in Bull territory working on — well, you will have to wait and see about that.
Blue - Ah, do we? And do you even know what I have invested and why? Muahahahaaa…
Sockpuppet - Well, he may have his carriage double-parked …
Shyster - Does anyone ever win everyone’s heart and mind? Doubtless there are some still unconvinced, but … well, you shall see a bit more on Friday.
Nimue - Perhaps …
Uhl - Well … Yes, it is just a bit impressionistic, rather than being an actual simulation of a sword fight. For the moment, I hope you’ll just accept that stuff happened offscreen and a sword was popped into the air and Zona caught it. She won.
Sleepinin - Yeah, and he’s really into his own spiel, even now …
taltamir - Yup. Makes ya wanna kill him sometimes …
Black Ethel - FINALLY a bit better, and thank you very much for asking. Got a decent night’s rest and am noticeably clearer.
Stormhawk - You’re taking the exchange between Yatta-ta and the queen a little further than they did. Read it again. Yatta only agrees that the only thing he gets out of the deal is not to be killed and to be allowed to leave. He did not swear that he would leave. Big difference. Though you are quite correct that his word is his bond, at least as far as he sees it.
LN - It went up. See my reply to Uhl.
Ga’Tor - No, not a terrific upset, but a great surprise to all in the audience. And wait until I show you a closeup of Zona before you say she’s not sweating …
January 5th, 2010 at 12:42 pm
Blah blah… I’m dissapointed. Dissapointed! Clearly Yatta was better technically.
He’s taking this rather well but it’s really shameful actually - no one feels proud for losing (especially after so much boasting).
But he was better!
Maybe Mentl paralyzed him for a sec:P
January 5th, 2010 at 1:24 pm
yeah you said that before sorry i forgot it was early. the swords were practice swords o my mistake. and it was poser thats i had thought you said before. i had heard of it before but it sounded very different from 3d max.
January 5th, 2010 at 1:54 pm
@JE Draft “Yatta only agrees that the only thing he gets out of the deal is not to be killed and to be allowed to leave. He did not swear that he would leave. Big difference.”
Aaaahhh, so, if Zona or the Queen insists he leave, he will (as he gave his word), but if any one of them asks him to stay, he wouldn’t be breaking his word if he agreed to do so. Am I reading that right?
January 5th, 2010 at 2:12 pm
Well done Yatta… well fought and gracious in defeat. Good on ya! Nice to see you back on your feet, JED.
January 5th, 2010 at 2:17 pm
@Jed: well he did his best, and that was a lot more than anyone expected. I think Zona’d be kinda glad she didn’t have to face him out there with REAL swords.
January 5th, 2010 at 3:27 pm
@AdamZero, with real swords Yatta would have been toast. That was my point in the case for it being a Yatta win, that in this stylized duel for a disarm Yatta can have superior skillz with a sword that would allow him to win without doing any dishonor to Zona. He would be the better fencer, but she would still remain the better warrior since she could bring so much else to the fight besides one on one fencing.
January 5th, 2010 at 4:46 pm
This think that Yatta-ta’s a jerk but at least he can learn and still someone i would not mind at my back in a fight
January 5th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
Even if he had given his word to leave, it is the right of the person to whom he gave his word to release him from it. Yatta stays if he will shut up long enough for someone else to get a word in edgewise. LOL
January 6th, 2010 at 12:03 am
I feel bad for Yatta-Ta, because he lost so much.
Think about it for a bit, everytime he has presented himself, he has presented himself as the BEST kivolan swordsman. Not just any old swordsman, but the BEST. And on top of that, he’s defeated by a woman!
For a kivolan swordsman, that’s about the worst that can happen.
He will be laughed out of court when he returns home.
January 6th, 2010 at 1:24 am
Ah, but the thing you’re forgetting, Sheela, is that he didn’t lose to just ANY Erogenian warrior.
He lost to ZONA.
Everyone loses to Zona. No dishonor there. Besides, if the comments from the peanut gallery are to be believed, he lasted longer against her than anyone except Rannek. Maybe even longer. No matter who you are, THAT’s bloody impressive.
January 6th, 2010 at 3:44 am
@TheLastGarou - Agreed. He went up against Zona and held his own for quite a while. He is due a LOT of respect. I can’t wait to see where JED takes us from here.
Great page, as always, JED. Here’s looking forward to Friday. (Hope you are feeling much better now.)
January 6th, 2010 at 10:04 am
For an Eregonian it’s impressive, and to most other as well.
But to the Kivolans ?
Not so much.
Remember they think the Erogonians are barbaric and barely civilised.
We are talking about the eye of the beholder and all that.
No matter how good she was, they’ll still make fun of him.
That’s how religious fanatics behave, they won’t see any truth but their own.
Unfair ? Oh yes.
Unfortunate ? Even more so.
Yatta-Ta is in trouble, that’s for sure.
January 6th, 2010 at 10:05 am
He says he is the best Kivalian swordsman, well he can still be that even after loosing to Zona, that just means there is no Kivalian swordsman that is better than him.
January 6th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
Oh well, poor guy can’t win at a swordfight. Perhaps he can win at drinking games during the feast, yes?
January 6th, 2010 at 3:28 pm
@Enne I doubt it. Remember way back, when Mentl and Zona were first visiting the one city, where Zona was downing all the food and drink they put in front of her without slowing down? That’s asking far too much.
@Macnut Yes, from what I understand. He agreed that, win or lose, he would be allowed to leave should he be asked to, rather than just killed on the spot. So as long as he doesn’t get stabbed in the back by some angry Erogenian warrior, he’ll have kept his, no matter if he leaves or stays.
@JED So…Now that we’ve seen a physical contest…How about a magical contest? Mentl vs. one of the high priests, or Tula? Swordfighting is nice and technical, but magic is flashy fireworks! I want fireworks! Or at least SOME sort of explosion!
January 6th, 2010 at 3:28 pm
I just had a theory, please bear with me here…
Tula is a cleric
Zona is a barbarian
Mentl is a wizard
what does the party need? a rogue!
Can Yatta-ta do rogue like stuff? or at least scout or something? I think he will be joining their party.
January 6th, 2010 at 4:41 pm
All we need now is the guards going :
Can we kill him now ?
Please ?
January 6th, 2010 at 5:02 pm
Taltamir, Yatta-ta is waaaaay too honorable to be a rogue. Paladin, maybe, but rogue? Nope.
Ghost, Mentl doesn’t have the control for a magical fight. He hasn’t learned control. Remember in the tunnels? All he wanted to do was crisp the critters attacking them…and instead, he “MELTED ROCK!!” Any mage worth his or her wisdom and hard-earned sparkly bits will refuse to duel an untried, untrained magician like him.
…But I agree, it would definitely be cool to see.
So, instead of a duel, how about a training montage? 8D
January 6th, 2010 at 7:41 pm
@Jean: Ask, and ye shall receive!
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0391.html
>_>
January 6th, 2010 at 8:41 pm
@Jan Jansen: First off, Mentl was recently told how ludicrously powerful he seems to be, and he knows how important Zona’s prowess is to her. Second, it’s clear that Tula, who was standing right next to him, is able to feel the concentrations of magic he builds up, and wouldn’t have tolerated his interfering with a challenge fight. Third, his magic doesn’t seem to be a thing of subtle whispers, it’s a performance. Fourth, by interfering in a challenge in Zona’s home, it’s quite possible that Mentl, who’s shown signs of insecurity already, could be judged as disturbing the balance of the Cha of the competition.
Besides all that, up until this challenge, Yatta’s been a comical figure everytime that he’s shown up around Zona and Mentl. Why would he think he needs to interfere?
Besides, isn’t the common saying that the best swordsmaster doesn’t fear the second best? Instead, he watches the person who’s just begun handling the weapon, because they’re unpredictable out of sheer ignorance.
Or, anyone can get lucky or play outside their league for a while.
We really don’t have evidence that Yatta actually IS more skilled than Zona, or even the other way around, just that it was much closer than either of them suspected.
January 7th, 2010 at 11:48 am
@Taltamir
As a DnD campaigner, I can tell you that you are correct. I can also say along with Jean that he’s too honorable to sneak around. Also, Jean, Mentl is rather untaught-he melted the rock because at the moment, all he wanted was “something to kill the thousands of little buggers running towards us” and it ended up that it ALSO melted rock. Yes he has power, but until someone can teach him, it’s going to remain like that. Also, remember that Pontagar elicited a similar response. It seems to be a bit like roller blading. Yes, Mentl can rollerblade-but not to the point of doing flips and incredibly intricate stuff.
Here’s a party from DnD, and I’m going to use Dragonlance as an example, since it literally came from a campaign and turned into a best selling book series:
Leader/Fighter-Ranger type class-Tanis Half-Elven. Weapons: Bow, knife, sword.
Barbarian/Fighter: Caramon Majere. Weapons: broadsword, massive muscles. Tall.
Wizard/Mage: Raistlen Majere. Twin brother of Caramon. Weapon: Staff of Magus, various spells and related components, spell book.
Cleric: Goldmoon. Healing choice: Staff of Mishakal. She is also one of the “barbarians” of the Eastern Plains.
Fighter/Melee fighter/Barbarian: Riverwind, companion and love of Goldmoon. “Barbarian” of the Eastern Plains. Weapon: sword, staff. Incredibly tall.
Fighter: Flint Fireforge, dwarf. Weapons: Axe. He is also a metalsmith.
Rogue: Tasselhoff Burrfoot, kender. Weapons: knife/dagger, and their main weapon, the hookpak. It is a staff with a fork on top. It functions also as a sling and dart shooting device. It also makes a weird, hollow, whistling noise when swung in a circle because it is hollow. Pouches with gods knows what inside, including personal possessions of fellow party members. They are insatiably curious and can get out of most locked places. Are generally fearless, which means if they are afraid/starting to get afraid, you need to be serious about the situation you’re in. The worst kind of torture for any other race on Krynn is to be locked in a room with a kender who 1. doesn’t have his pouches or lockpicks 2. there’s nothing in the room but you or the kender. The worst thing for a kender is boredom: so, it will talk to you to save itself. They’re the equivalent of hobbits.
Paladin/fighter: Sturm Brightblade, Knight of Solomnia. He has an impressive mustache. Weapon: sword.
Wizard
Fighter
Barbarian
Cleric/Healer
Rogue
Paladin
You can have as little as three or as many as seven or eight in your party.
January 7th, 2010 at 11:57 am
I will also point out that, at least for me, wizards and sorcerers are much different. In a way, Tula can be considered a sorceress because of her ability to use magic without the use of spellbooks, spell components, or other physical things. She IS obviously a cleric due to her healing abilities but as JED and others have said, she can cast a mean spell and look damn good while doing it.
Mentl is more of a wizard, specializing in music. Actually, he might also be considered a Bard for his ability to affect others with music. Good Bards have enough Charisma to change the course of things. Of course, it could just be Charisma. Due to the fact that Mentl is and was able to cast magic without use of the book or his lute, I would consider him a true mage instead of “just” a Bard. Mentl could even possibly effect people by just humming something when he gets enough experience and teaching in his powers!
January 7th, 2010 at 9:37 pm
Mish lady, you are applying DnD metagame knowledge to what is clearly a different system… (or a very loose interpretation of said system).
Besides, sorcerers do use components just like wizards do… only difference is in how they prepare their spells in the morning. (and both can get rid of components with eschew materials)
January 7th, 2010 at 9:58 pm
Hail Gygax!!
January 7th, 2010 at 10:49 pm
Taltamir-true, true. As there are different types of specialization and such for everything. I’m going off based on what I know. JED could very well tell me to stuff it and say Mentl is a new breed of such and such and to stop pestering everyone because it’s his big sandbox to play in. Which it is.
As a GM and writer I can respect that it is JED’s world. Things DO work here differently than say here on Earth. This could be a parallel universe to Earth where the powers such as Tula and the priestesses still hold sway over the world. (Not that they don’t now, but you tend to hear more about the three main power religions in the news-and not all good news either).
And I do believe that sorcerers can use stuff like wands. Just the ability to go “FIREBALL!!!” without any prep would be…awesome-o.
January 8th, 2010 at 12:52 am
@Jean: Yatta-Ta a paladin? You’re kidding, right? He’s not a holy warrior. In fact, I’d call him a romantic twit. And the appropriate fighter subclass for a romantic twit is Cavalier.
As for everyone speculating on what kind of magic user Mentl is, JED’s already explained it. He’s an Enchanter, someone who works magic by chanting, or singing.
January 8th, 2010 at 3:03 am
Well, if we look at Yatta-Ta as a possible member of our beloved group, he could fill in the position of a ranger instead of a thief. He can certainly fight and he seems to be able (to a certain extent) to sneak and move very fast in the wilderness (three times ahead of Zona).
Would be better fitting than the paladin.
Or he may end up as a trainer in the village, we need to see.
January 8th, 2010 at 4:03 am
Inquisitive Raven, well, if you wanted to go 2nd edition or 3rd.x prestige class…but I concur. Romantic Twit, subclass (whatever).
January 8th, 2010 at 5:27 am
I’m just happy the Strong Female Lead was “allowed” to defeat the Mystical Swordsman Out Of Nowhere. Too often female characters suddenly stop shining or get lobotomized when some vaguely competent male character passes by. Yes, that’s a pet peeve of mine.
Zona hai!
January 8th, 2010 at 8:35 am
Thank you, Inquisitive Raven. I had actually totally forgotten that JED had given Mentl his own classification. ^_^
January 8th, 2010 at 2:14 pm
@Jean: Me no speak 2nd or 3rd ed. The Cavalier was originally introduced way, waaaay back when 1st ed was the only one around in an issue of Dragon Magazine. Actually, the only 2nd ed book I own is the Player’s Handbook, and shortly after that I discovered GURPS and never looked back.
January 8th, 2010 at 7:48 pm
If we are going D&D, I’d go with Duelist for Yatta, works out much better. They don’t have to be killers for hire, it would work for them simply to just be light fighters who are extremely proficient in single combat with certain weapons. IMO, that would fit Yatta.
But speaking of paladins, I actually ran in a short AD&D (1st ed) game for a bit. Since we didn’t want to start off as peons and the GM didn’t want to grind us up, he simply handed us 2M exp and told us to build a character. Well, that turns into a new 13th level Paladin with 250K exp left over. So, over to Unearthed Arcana to do the Cavalier style build and while I’m there, I “invest” in a few levels of Ranger. I didn’t get to keep them since the GM decided that just getting enough levels to get weapon specialization on top of Cavalier specialization was a bit much…..
January 8th, 2010 at 11:58 pm
Kamatu, when my first ever campaign that I participated in stopped, I was a 15th level halfling cleric paladin in plate armor. I had 17 AC and 95 HP. Plus I had a Draconic Cohort-it was still a baby, but still. I was bada$$! lol

Mish_Lady : Naturally, I just meant that you are saying assumes DnD 3e when it could be 2e, or gurps, or WoD, or a brand new system he invented.
Naturally its the authors choice, but I didn’t mean it as an attempt to shut you down, you can speculate freely, I am just wishing to contribute to your speculation
@Inquisitive Raven:
As for everyone speculating on what kind of magic user Mentl is, JED’s already explained it. He’s an Enchanter, someone who works magic by chanting, or singing.
If we are talking about 3e enchanters, thats not how they work. Enchanters in 3e cast spells that affect the mind. Singing or chanting is only rarely used… and any wizard who did not ban enchantment could be using those spells anyways.
