Damm great page worth the wait. Thank you for a great comic. Please keep it comming.
December 29th, 2009 at 11:14 pm
yay
i wonder who one.
December 29th, 2009 at 11:32 pm
Speed of blows resound
Greatest warrior alive
Whose hand is empty?
-bow- And now we must wait to see who has won…
-Sigh- what a great fight page. I wish it had all been like this! Great climax to a good fight, JED.
December 29th, 2009 at 11:38 pm
Judging by the old guy’s smile, I’m guessing that’s Yatta-Ta’s sword flying up, which means he won (seeing as how they “exchanged” swords a few comics ago). Everyone else seems stunned, rather than joyful, at the result. I think if Zona had won, they’d be noticeably more “cheery”. Either way, this has been really good. Can’t wait to really see who won next comic! Thanks JED!
December 29th, 2009 at 11:44 pm
Well since it is the sword with the square guard going up I would say that Zona has a funny shocked look on her face as she just lost to the nutball.
December 29th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
Ok now, FINISH HIM! lol, seriously though this is an incredible page, simply masterful good sir.
December 29th, 2009 at 11:55 pm
Gotta love the comments from the peanut gallery. Especially “She’s either going to kill someone or scr…” XD If Zona lost (and the blur from the sword in the air kinda looks like she did), I can see her wanting to keep Yatta around for some rematches — she’s enjoying this too much to simply have one bout.
December 30th, 2009 at 12:15 am
Hmmm, I’ve seen that look that Tula has on her face before. It’s the ” Well I’ll be damned” looked, not to be confused with the , “Ha! The older sybling just got their arse kicked by a geek and I’m never gonna let her/him live it down” look.
And as for the priest, think “Thank the Gods! Now she may finally learn some humility” look. While Mom and Loverboy, they each have their own version of the “WTF” look, while the preistess has that “Norman Correlate” look.
December 30th, 2009 at 12:23 am
I’m wondering if these “Zona lost” speeches are a bit premature. The faces look delighted to me, which means it could be Zona who won. (True, Ipola looks shocked, but c’mon, Yatta-ta’s just kept up with her baby girl killer for a decent length of time; that on its own is reason enough for shock, since after all, he’s a noisy self-aggrandizing Kivalian, c’mon–who’d'a thunk he had some ACTUAL fighting skills in him, after all that boasting?)
The sword-blur…is far too blurry to determine whether or not it’s a sharply squared off hilt or a rounded but still rectangular hilt. And JED did a very good job of keeping things secret.
We shall not find out until Friday, folks. Or possibly Saturdayk, depending on how much partying he does over the holiday… >.>
December 30th, 2009 at 12:31 am
@MacGuyver-they did have each other’s swords on the ground, but if I understand correctly once they were on the stone, they gave the swords back to the original wielder.
@ Jean-I think I agree with you. There’s too much blur to tell whose sword it is.
We have to remember, JED loves to make us writhe in impatience, excitement, and pure awe in what he does with these pages. I think my tentative guess is:
barring JED going with the normal Zona winning (and I think the fact that Yatta-ta surviving this long means that he has a good chance):
1. Yatta-ta wins to the astonishment of all watchers.
2. Due to a second look at the sword (which looks like a butterfly), both have disarmed the other and both are flying upwards.
3. Because of the great K-TOK at the end, the swords have splintered into one another and gone flying.
I’d like to think that both Zona and Yatta will learn something from this episode. I think I agree that from the look on the priest’s face, Yatta will definitely be having a surprise coming to him.
Or something completely different because JED likes surprising us all.
December 30th, 2009 at 1:15 am
Maybe Yatta-Ta knocked off her top, but lost his sword in the progess ?
Only men do that!
December 30th, 2009 at 1:31 am
I don’t care who wins at this point and in that lies hint of JED’s excellence. When we first saw Yatta (and his ensuing vignettes) he was a shallow, two dimensional, comic relief. Now, JED has as many people rooting for Yatta as Zona and NOT to her (searching for a word here) degredation(?). I think what we are seeing here is that people with good hearts and character (even if they ARE goofballs) can have issues with each other and resolve them without death and destruction.
Yeesh! Am I reading too much into this? Whatever…
If Yatta wins I wanna see Zona grab him and lay a great big sloppy wet kiss on him.
If Zona wins I wanna see Yatta kneel before her and then Zona picks him up inna bear hug and lay a great big sloppy wet kiss on him.
Mentl will understand…
December 30th, 2009 at 1:33 am
P.S. That’s a rather serious look on Ipona’s face.
December 30th, 2009 at 1:56 am
Would be neat twist if Yatta actually won. It’d be heckuva upset considering the odds against him. And yeah, I’d also like to see Zona lay a sloppy wet kiss on him either way for giving her a great fight.
I’m just not sure Mentl’s gonna be so understanding though. There’s a chance he might develop a complex from realizing he and Zona could never have THAT kind of fun, having learned that Zona DOES enjoy that kind of fun. Seeing Zona kiss the goof is NOT going to thrill him-really, what guy does enjoy seeing his girl kiss another man square on the lips?
December 30th, 2009 at 2:08 am
Ga’Tor…are you perhaps thinking “denigration”? den⋅i⋅grate
/ˈdɛnɪˌgreɪt/
–verb (used with object), -grat⋅ed, -grat⋅ing.
1. to speak damagingly of; criticize in a derogatory manner; sully; defame: to denigrate someone’s character.
2. to treat or represent as lacking in value or importance; belittle; disparage: to denigrate someone’s contributions to a project.
Hope this helps
And agree with the general commentary…Argh!! Must wait patiently, but no matter who ‘wins’ this one…WOW what’a fight!
December 30th, 2009 at 3:03 am
*snicker* That finish is pure evil on JED’s part. It’s over, but we won’t know who won till next episode, so there. Nyaaaah.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:45 am
Omg, when’s the next update??? I’ve got to see the next page!
December 30th, 2009 at 3:49 am
Okay, this is annoying. The swords “morph” a bit in the fight, with sometimes they look more round and sometimes flat. Especially annoying are when they should look flat in some almost edge on shots, but they still look round. Generally though, Yatta’s original sword appears to be more rounded.
Darkness is an oopsie, or maybe we just blame it on the lighting, since the sword *in Zona’s hand* is _almost_ consistently darker.
I’m going to have to go with Yata for the win though based on the ratio of hilt vs. guard, although that one seems to morph a little during the fight also, because virtually every veiw shows that the guard on Yatta’s original sword is much wider than the hilt and the guard on Zona’s original sword is smaller, almost the same width as the hilt.
So….doing my little preinstalled Paint program, I check the pixels out and drew some lines, the hilt and guard are almost equal in length, although the one of the bottom looks like it has a “bigger” guard, I don’t think it is that much.
December 30th, 2009 at 6:16 am
Lovely page, JED.
I’ve been pressing the update button everyday and several times a day since saturday looking for a new page.
I’m not even going to guess at who won this one.
December 30th, 2009 at 7:02 am
I saw what you did there !
I keep pressing the F5 in hopes of a new page
To The MacNut - I don’t think she will kiss him IF she lose.
However she probably will give him a hug.
Hopefully burying his face in her cleavage in the process!
To Jed - Cruel, so cruel…
December 30th, 2009 at 7:30 am
It’s interesting to note who (besides the priest) seems openly pleased about whatever happened…
December 30th, 2009 at 8:45 am
I’m betting Yatta-ta! The priest probably thinks Zona could use a humbling, the priestess looks severe, so she’s keeping it in. Ipolita is stunned, as is Mentl…and Tula has a smirk…probably along the lines of nnnnyaaaa, you can still be beaten every now and again.
December 30th, 2009 at 9:27 am
Everybody’s wanting one or the other to win… I think I’d prefer it if’n the result was a draw.
December 30th, 2009 at 9:59 am
AH! The Official Cliff Hanger for the New Year!
Hey JED, you planned that, didn’t you?

December 30th, 2009 at 10:47 am
Yatta-ta wins. The looks on the respective crowd members, and his own “gotcha!” look in 5, say that pretty clearly to me.
Now he just has to survive the evening with that big redhead.
Though he is the perfect evening choice if Tula wants to step away from the expected attentions of her fellow tribesmen, and also spend an evening of conversation finding out a lot more about this Yatta-ta guy. Among any set of suitors, our Princess of Hearts will be trump.
December 30th, 2009 at 11:44 am
What? What?! What?!? How can you do this to us? Oh, the agony! It’s inhumane! It’s almost as bad as congress passing laws nobody wants…
Anyway, great comic. I’ve been really enjoying the story. Thanks a lot for all your hard work!
December 30th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Yatta! Yatta! (Yatta-man..)
Rooted for him all the way. Has a stronger stance - not to be mistaken with wonderful Zona’s more erotic stance. Zona goes irritated, sleepy, surprised, fierce, astonished, elated.. he’s just composed and professional. He had to win.
Yatta-ta kicked ass! Yatta-ta rules! All hail Yatta-ta!
December 30th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Yatta won- look at those facial expressions. I hope he doesn’t gloat.
December 30th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Very nice page, action artfully done. Very much better than the sword switcharoo.
December 31st, 2009 at 12:22 am
Too many people are smiling….. i think that means Zona won. Otherwise i belive expressions all around would be more what the hell inclined.
December 31st, 2009 at 12:36 am
JED.
You, Sir. Are a cruel and evil man…
I salute you!
December 31st, 2009 at 12:38 am
…also. Is that the tiniest hint of a smirk on Mentl’s face?
December 31st, 2009 at 12:09 pm
To stun them all, if tis true that Yatta has won, would love to see a classy exit. Yatta salutes Zona, not saying a word, but giving her a smile and a bow, gets down from the Stonehenge they’ve been fighting on, does a courtly kneel before the queen and asks to keep the wooden sword. When she grants that request, to the ammazement of all, he then begs her leave. The queen invites him to stay for the feasting, but he declines, saying he would love to, but, alas he had given his word that when it was over he would leave and never return. And then, with a final bow to the queen, the ladies, and a sword salute to Zona, he leaves.
All are silent as he walks away and fades into the distance. Except maybe the two guards that brought him before the queen. One looks at the other and says, “If he could fight like that against Zona…” and the other says, “Yeah. (pause) Let’s get drunk. I mean really, really drunk.”
December 31st, 2009 at 5:16 pm
Taking a look at the image with the flipping sword in it, it strikes me that Yatta’s arm was in a high position, with Zona’s around her chest height, putting it into a relatively low position.
It seems to me that it would be easier to send a disarmed sword flying upward if it was knocked out of a descending stroke than from a horizontal, or ascending stroke.
However, the effects behind the heads of the Queen, Mentl, and Tula could be indicative of shock or surprise.
JED, I say “Well done, sir”, on giving balanced reasons to suspect victory in either direction. Win, lose, or possible draw, Yatta’s EARNED respect for his skills in battle, if not for his prior buffoonery. I suspect that he may get more interest from the Erogenians, but he’s starting from a poor political position of being thought a fool.
December 31st, 2009 at 11:31 pm
@Lictre: Agreed on Yatta-ta’s political position, but I still cannot but think that there is some sort of misdirection behind his apparent buffoonery. Or even something magical like a curse or a geas. There were simply too many flashes of intelligence, knowledge and sensitivity breaking through the clown surface in the last pages before the duel.
January 1st, 2010 at 12:17 pm
I agree with Hack, there’s more to Yatta than meets the eye.
Either way, good show JED. One of the better duels I’ve seen in quite a while ^_^
All hail J! All hail J!
January 1st, 2010 at 12:18 pm
Well, it just might be Zonas half brother, with some of Zonas physical abilities… And a civilized upbringing, and lots of fencing-training.
Just a tought… Great comic this!!
January 1st, 2010 at 1:59 pm
Great fight eather way it ends, oh and dose anyone else see the “Storm Giant” in the clouds to the right of the spining sword.
January 1st, 2010 at 2:01 pm
*To the left I mean* drat this perspective thing I have.
January 1st, 2010 at 2:16 pm
I wonder what the white blur is on the left side of the Ka-Tok panel. There is a smaller one on the right side as well. And just a wild, out of left field thought: what if the fight has just been stopped by an outside force? I mean, we’ve seen aspects of the dieties of this universe, at least the evil side of it. The one to which that Stonehenge they’ve been fighting on is dedicated to, may have just had enough of it or needed to tell them something really important and has just disarmed both parties. Would explain all the looks (and leave it open for a rematch later on, if the deity says it’s on hold until later).
January 1st, 2010 at 4:58 pm
Stormhawk,
While those are cool observations, JED has said that someone will win and someone will lose…
Though there may have been a deific intervention anyway. XD
January 2nd, 2010 at 3:26 pm
My personal theory: Zona wins, but has possibly lost some clothing. That accounts for the grinning and the “Oh dear” look from Mom ;P
January 3rd, 2010 at 2:49 am
It ain’t over til it’s over…remember the part in the MIB/inigo duel where Inigo’s sword goes flying up in the air and he steps back and catches it
January 3rd, 2010 at 10:08 am
@Elfguy Except that JED had said a page or so back that the fight ends on page 335
January 3rd, 2010 at 10:16 pm
@Lictre, Re: Elfguy. True, but it could be a step back and grab in panel 1, followed by a couple of tok-toks and the winning disarm.
January 4th, 2010 at 6:01 pm
Actually, Looking at the last large frame, with that lovely view of the sky, I’m becoming more convinced of a dual disarming. On the right of that panel, appears to be a motion-blurred practice weapon.
At least, that’s the way I’m seeing it.
