OK … NOW they’re just having too much fun!

Great! Now she is going to land on his sword. WOW - what an action!

Oh, this is good! They’re having fun!
    More, JED, more!

I completly agree, I wasn’t sure if Yatta was enjoying himself or taking the thing too seriously until now.

I’m half expecting the next page to rotate the POV around Zona as she hangs in midair, then kicks Yatta-Ta across the arena! I’ll chime in that i really like how they’re just having fun with it here. I predict that Yatta-Ta will be invited to teach swordfighting to the tribe, and maybe even become a semi-regular sparring partner for Zona.

Another fine page of a terrific comic! Thanks again JED, keep it up!

Yah know, I’m expecting her to either kick her foot out into his face, or get hit while in mid-air from that last panel. I’m leaning towards the former though.

    December 22nd, 2009 at 11:33 pm

You know, if he brought his sword up in “salute” right now, he’d swack her right on the butt. What an embarr”ass”ing way to “end” it.

Gotta love the crazy ones! Go Yatta!

Man, I gotta say I love the background. Very nicely done.

So, wow, my ‘bet’ keeps shifting from Zona to Yatta and back to Zona. Both of them are awesome fighters, so I guess now we’re just waiting for one of them to run out of Aces up their proverbial sleeves.

I’m actually just tickled to see the tone of the fight change. This is great!

God, that is beautiful. And I LOVE that last panel. Any chance of redoing it as a wallpaper? Please? o.o

This is getting to be so much fun it needs a sound track. The Hungarian Rhapsody maybe?

  13. Kamatu
    December 23rd, 2009 at 12:49 am

Nah, as much as I would love to watch this fight go on, I don’t want to watch a 10 minute movie sword fight sequence play out over the next couple of months. I think Zona gets the tumble here and either she drops her sword to grab the rock or she just hits and rolls at the bottom while keeping her sword.

Actually, I’m betting on Yatta as long as this stays strictly a fencing match. Now this could mean the end of the “foot to the face”, but if Yatta ducks that one to the side, Zona’d be even more off balance!

  14. reddwarf
    December 23rd, 2009 at 1:18 am

Yep, they’re definitely having fun now — especially Zona. I just realized one reason why Zona jumped up here (besides grandstanding) — the sun is setting - this puts them up into the sunlight for a bit longer.

  15. Sarge
    December 23rd, 2009 at 2:58 am

Stormhawk, look at Yatta’s blade. It’s a blur. When you’re committed to that sort of a swing, you don’t just instantly change your angle of attack 90 degrees.
I wonder how many Moon Tribe girls are getting “moony” over Yatta…?

  16. Bellcii
    December 23rd, 2009 at 3:16 am

Considering she is a seriously and much loved main character, it is certain she will win.

Nice to see two … um.. ‘friends’ having fun playing. :P

I suspect we’ll see an end to this fight soon, maybe around new year?

    Great page.

  20. Uhl
    December 23rd, 2009 at 7:50 am

Yatta’s probably admiring the view right now, especially those “twin peaks.”

  21. Tricksterson
    December 23rd, 2009 at 9:21 am

I guess I’m reading it different than everyone else. SHE certainly looks like she’s having fun but to me yatta looks like he’s finally starting to feel the pressure. And not that her sword swings went “woosh” while his went “whiff”, a definitely more pathetic sound. I’m guessing that her surperhuman endurance is starting to become an advatage while he’s starting to tire. And yeah, I’m expecting her to land on or kick his sword and/or arm.

Agreed on the 10 min fight issue. That is why I can’t stand Dragonball Z.

  24. Mish_Lady
    December 23rd, 2009 at 11:17 am

They are probably having fun with each other now. One can assume that as the Champion of the Moon Tribe, Zona will know several different styles of fighting-including fencing and “fancy footwork” type of stuff. Again, because she is stronger, she could possibly outlast Yatta-but with how Yatta has surprised us with the things he’s pulled out of the very conservative rear end of his (or how his people tend to be-his thoughts of “Zona is a virgin” and that he would in the end beat her-not taking into consideration that she could be just as good as him and not just “looking for a man” to come and sweep her off of her feet.)

And if anyone wants some good barbarian swinging action, I would suggest watching Red Sonja, with Arnold Schwartzenagger (spelling? lol I know most people only need to hear “Arnold” in a tone of voice to know you’re talking about him) as the muscled barbarian prince. They have some nice fights that last for awhile. Basically, he wants her, but she won’t let him get at her until he beats her in a sword fight. The first fight ends up being very long in the movie and storyline-their two companions end up sitting there going “OMG…can we stop now???”

  25. Sleepinin
    December 23rd, 2009 at 11:30 am

I think we can all agree on one thing, however: Yatta DOES have the mad sword skills to back up his claims that he is the best swordsman in all of Kilvalia.

Heh, makes you wonder if Zona is going to feel somewhat embarassed at her unceremonious treatment of the poor bastard earlier in the comic >.<

  26. Craze

    @JD:

Much better composition and illustration of the action than previous pages.

  29. Ed
    December 23rd, 2009 at 7:32 pm

for wooden swords, they seem pretty sturdy - I am waiting for one or both to break (Both? a draw?)

  30. ICEKAT
    December 23rd, 2009 at 8:32 pm

I’m guessing the “swoosh” indicates large swings based on great strength and arc whereas the “wiff” is a small arc and tight swing, more focoused on speed. Perhaps, as he already knew she was a jumper, he intended the jump, and is ready for it? Not to say Zona won’t still stomp him but, clever moves, Yatta is full of em.

  31. ICEKAT
    December 23rd, 2009 at 8:34 pm

Also the swords are probably oak, and therefore pretty strong. Would a weak pine branch be any use as a test of strength?

  32. NakhtiChaos
    December 23rd, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Just take a moment and realize all she has to do is extend one leg and….. Pow right in the kisser. Unless she is out of range….. i think she is in range….. I could be wrong.

  33. zangoules
    December 23rd, 2009 at 8:56 pm

^_^ lol, that just looks like fun. Jed I challenge thee to a test of strength with wooden swords, winner gets pie XD

  34. The MacNut
    December 23rd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Zona’s definitely enjoying herself, probably because Yatta’s turning out to be a challenge after all. Yatta, though, I think is taking this bout more seriously. He has some idea of Zona’s strength and speed by now, and knows he’s no match for either. So I think he’s been trying to get clever, and hoping/looking for a lucky break or for Zona to make a mistake-which would require some concentration on his part.

Besides, this match has never been about fun-n-games for Yatta anyway…

  35. Kamatu
    December 24th, 2009 at 3:10 am

Umm, guys, Zona is fast, but that isn’t one of her shticks, which are immense strength and a will to win. She doesn’t need to be so fast, especially if she is so strong.

Even if I’m wrong, it depends on training and Yatta’s is probably better, which means more control where Zona would just bull through. Zona might have had fancy training, but if she doesn’t need it and doesn’t use it…….

    December 24th, 2009 at 6:11 am

I’m Getting the feeling that they’re just too evenly matched, the Queen may end up calling it a draw!

  38. Stormhawk
    December 24th, 2009 at 7:42 pm

Sarge, it’s a wooden practise blade, and yeah, you can do that. A good swordsman never so fully comitts to a manuever that direction cannot be changed. Yatta is being portrayed as a great swordsman, so the option would be there. (Little background here: was a fencer, and for a number of years, did weapons demos with real and wooden swords, so yeah, literaly have been there, done that).

My take is that the “wiff” was a step up manuever. Remember, unless acted on by an outside force, Zona can only to come to earth at a set speed and since, as drawn, she jumped straight up, Yatta can make a very good guess where and when she would land and set his sword placement accordingly. Fencing is more like chess match, thinking ahead of your opponent. But all in all, I know exactly how, when, and what circumstances this fight will end and that is….

Exactly whatever way that Mr Je Draft wishes it to end.

Merry Christmas To you and yours JED and a happy new year. Thanks for a great comic.

  41. Fatuncle
    December 25th, 2009 at 2:14 am

I think it was Jean who said something to the effect that she thought Yatta might be under a geas; I said that I thought of him as a bit of an idiot savant, because he certainly acted the idiot, right up the point he started fighting. And what we see now is as if a mask has dropped away.

What if what we are seeing now is the real Yatta? What if the public persona of buffoon is the result of a geas, or curse?

What if his following Zona into the Valley is an attempt on his part to break such a curse?

Personally, I find this Yatta far more interesting, and much more impressive, than the buffoon.

  42. Sheela
    December 25th, 2009 at 8:51 pm

This has definatelyu become a fun fight for Zona and, I suspect, Yatta-Ta as well.
I could easily see Yatta-Ta win this duel, only to have Zona round up the Queen and say ..

    Zona : He’s fun!! Can I keep him ? :)
    Ipola : NO!, Bad Zona!
Zona : Awww, moooom… I want someone good to spar with!
    Yatta-Ta : excuse me ..
Ipola : Zona, you can’t just take a man as a pet !
    Zona : … but ..
    Yatta-Ta : excuse me ..
Ipola : No Zona, you don’t even know if it’s housebroken!
    Zona : but mooom
    Yatta-Ta : what ? I beg your par..
Ipola : Besides it’s unseemly for a Princess to have a buffoon running around her heels.
    Yatta-Ta : WHAT ?!
    Mentl : She’s right, he’s a buffoon!
Zona : But you saw that he won and evr’thing!
    Yatta-Ta : That’s right, I’M the better fighter here!
Ipola : Oh Zona, don’t you think I saw that you were holding back out there ?
    Yatta-Ta : … she what ?
Zona : But mooom, if I didn’t the trainings swords would have broken!
    Yatta-Ta : *looks unsettled for a moment*
Ipola : Doesn’t matter Zona, you handed him the victory deliberately, which makes his victory meaningless, which means I still have to punish him, and drive him from our lands!
Guard 1 : Can we kill him now then ?
    Guard 2 : Please ?
    Yatta-Ta : What ? But I won!
Zona : FINE ! I’ll just take him with me when I go on my next and leave him in a nearby city.

    *storms off in a huff*
    *Yatta-Ta looks on in confusion*

Mentl : Well … *I* think it’s unseemly to play ones own daughter in such a way!
Ipola : Well, she gets her sparring partner this way, and she even gets to lug him around with her as she travels.
    Ipola : I think it’s a good deal, don’t you Yatta-Ta ?
    Yatta-Ta : … erhhh …
Ipola : Surely you wouldn’t go against my wishes, would you Yatta-Ta ?
    Yatta-Ta : uhmm ..
    Guards : PLEEEAAASSEE ?
    Yatta-Ta : NO ! .. I mean, offcourse not your majesty.
Ipola : Good! It’s settled then, Mentl and Tula will help you get ready for travel.
Guards : *makes puppy eyes at Ipola*
Ipola : No! .. Bad guards!
Ipola : Now, off you all go, back to work, shoo shoo!

*as Yatta-Ta, Mentl and Tula walks away*

    Yatta-Ta : What have I gotten into ?
Mentl : The maddest ride of your life, with two highly excotic and oversexed Barbarian Princesses who’ll sexually molest you at a whim.
Tula : *giggles and fondles Yatta-Ta’s buttocks*
    Yatta-Ta : GAH!!
    Mentl : You’ll love it.

  43. The MacNut
    December 25th, 2009 at 10:58 pm

@Sheela: ROFLMAO!!! That was GREAT!!! Except for the part where Mentl speaks up about Ipola “playing” her daughter, I can’t see Mentl being comfortable enough with the Queen to be quite that bold-though I suppose it can be seen as a necessary bit of dialog to get Ipola to explain her reasoning.

The last part where Tula cops a feel REALLY had me laughing, I could TOTALLY see her doing that. The really interesting thing will be how Yatta handles all the sexual molestation he’ll be getting from both women AND probably men after this contest-if he has more…conservative sexual mores, all that attention could be a problem.

  44. The MacNut
    December 25th, 2009 at 11:00 pm

At the very least, he’ll probably be surprised by how aggressive Erogenian women can be (assuming he hasn’t heard stories). I’ll be Kivalian women are a good deal more conservative.

  45. Lictre
    December 26th, 2009 at 10:27 am

@MacNut: I think it’s safe to assume he hasn’t heard stories, considering he was presuming the virginity of a famously aggressive Erogenian princess.

  46. Sheela
    December 26th, 2009 at 4:58 pm

    *bows*

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

And I do think Mentl would speak up to the queen, if he felt his Zona had been wronged. He has bigger balls than he realizes.

What makes it for me, is the Guards that wants to kill Yatta-Ta … can you even imagine them with puppy eyes ? That woudl be hilarious. :)
And I could easily see that crowd speaking over the head of Yatta-Ta .. on purpose too!!

  47. Jean
    December 27th, 2009 at 1:03 am

…I don’t see Mentl as being all that inclined to share his lovely, sweet Zona. Nor of her being interested in Yatta-ta that way. (The man DID insult her repeatedly, after all, refusing to believe her truthful statements about her personal levels of experience in such matters…)

  48. Ben
    December 27th, 2009 at 10:53 am

I still think Zona is enjoying this enough to at least make Mentl self-conscious. He loves Zona, but this is thing that he knows he’ll never be abel to give her.

He can’t be her peer in this fashion, and he knows that Zona wants that. Maybe she’ll say that she doesn’t care, and maybe she’ll mean it, on some level, but the fact is that if Mentl could, on top of all else, go blow for blow with her like this, their relationship could reach a whole new depth. But he can’t do that for her, because he hasn’t dedicated a lifetime of training to it. The fact that he can’t, but this fuckwit can, is just not going to simply go away.

  49. Wyrmhand
    December 27th, 2009 at 4:32 pm

    @Sheela: ROFL

  50. Jean
    December 27th, 2009 at 8:16 pm

Ah, but we know–because Zona has said it herself–that she could HAVE that with a guy, many, many times over…yet she’s discovered she Does Not Want That.

  51. Jean
    December 27th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

After all, a challenge in the workplace is quite often not the sort of thing we want to take home and live with at the end of the day…

  52. Moox
    December 27th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

Man, I don’t know who to root for!
A sign of a brilliant page, I think.
I love this comic, I’m really lovin’ the last panel right now.

  53. Joe
    December 28th, 2009 at 9:58 am

What, you mean like their queen?

“I’ll be Kivalian women are a good deal more conservative.”

  54. The Macnut
    December 28th, 2009 at 6:02 pm

I don’t think Yanora is the typical Kivalian woman. I get the impression that besides her, the rest are…encouraged to be more conservative, at least than their Erogenian counterparts. Remember when Zona and Mentl first arrived in that Kivalian city, and that street preacher all but called Zona a whore as she walked by?

Maybe Kivalian women are freaks behind closed doors like their queen, but I tend to doubt it.

  55. The Old Hack
    December 28th, 2009 at 7:13 pm

Macnut, I’m afraid I have to disagree with you. Behind closed doors is precisely where ‘freaks’ tend to go in very repressive societies of that kind. From a purely biological or psychological point of view, human sex drive does not go away merely because the Puritans or the Victorians pretend it doesn’t exist. The lustiness of Kivalian men or women might be quite high behind the closed doors mentioned above.

Or they might indeed largely be a cool and passionless people. Though I cannot see why that priest would so vigorously denounce such passion if it were not there somewhere, even in himself and projected unto others…

  56. JE Draft
    December 28th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

Hi, guys! Bronchitis has gone away, and head cold has come to take its place! As Daffy Duck once said: “AAAAAAGH! I must have *enemies!*”

Nonetheless, fighting the good fight, and doing all I can to bring you your update tonight. If not tonight, then tomorrow PM, promise!

Had a very wonderful time in CO Springs, thanks to my brother and his lovely family. Hope you all can say the same for your holidays! But, as you observe, have been a bit incommunicado as a result.

Still, as always many thanks to all of you who continue to show interest and contribute to making “Zona” a fun experience by posting. It really is very rewarding to me because of that, and no lie. No time to answer you all at the moment, but I did want to comment on a couple thingS:

Yes, they are both getting into it, but Yatta is still taking this much more seriously than the Erogenian princess. Yes, it is quite a long time since anyone has made Zona work for it in this way, and she’s unreeling her game a move at a time and finding he can absolutely take it. She is not taking it easy on Yatta at all, nor is he pulling any punches. The final denouemont will be on page 335 and yes, someone is going to lose and someone win.

Stormhawk - Puns are the lowest form of humor. You should be ashamed of yourself, and so should I for laughing at it. :) And I am not a fencer, alas, and so am just trying to make it all serve the story visually as best I can. You can trust me that this will never be used as a textbook for any swordsmanship class.

The Old Hack - I could pretty easily do it as a vote incentive.

All the scenes are inspired by music. No lie. This one is set variously to Korngold’s score for “The Adventures Of Robin Hood”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L10fR31jC1w&feature=PlayList&p=A97D75C3575272CF&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=5

And the Williams score for “Hook.” In this clip, starting about 2:25

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUFrOHRK7wI&feature=PlayList&p=F31C46CB3BB26B86&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=65

Naturally, like anything I do in the comic, it’s a hell of a lot better in my head - as has been commented on. But this is the kind of feel I was trying for.

The swords are very sturdy indeed, and would actually be a fine, potentially lethal, weapon in the hands of someone who knew her business.

Sheela - Mmmmmm…. not sure that’s EXACTLY how it’s going to happen. But full marks for keeping everyone thoroughly amused while Zona’s on holiday hiatus! :)

Kivalians - especially city-bred folks - are much much much less open about sex than Erogenians. Well, to be fair, just about anyone you encounter this side of “Flipside” or “Pronquest” is going to be. Yanora is the queen, and, not to give too much away, but it’s pretty obvious that he’s trying to make up for something she hasn’t got. And - she’s the queen. And so I mean - dayum! :)

  57. Sheela
    December 29th, 2009 at 8:09 am

@JE Draft : Thank you, I do my level best to please.
I hope you get better soon, if nothing else, then for the simple sake of getting better. :)
Also remember, that when erogenian guards make puppy-eyes, they are being BAD, NAUGHTY Guards!!

    Also, Flipside rocks! :D

On a sidenote - If kivalians are freaky behind closed door, but cool outdoors, how freaky would Yatta-Ta then be behind closed doors ?
Considering how chaste and polite he is outdoors, I mean. It makes one wonder, it does!

Sheela, you have taken my mind in a very naughty and not exactly where-I-wanted-it-to-go direction.

    *applause*

With that said, if he gets outta hand, I could always discipline him with a little…okay, a lot of…spanking.

…And now the rest of your minds went places you didn’t expect them to go.

    Muahahahaha!
