December 19th, 2009 at 2:18 am
Love the grin on Zona! She’s enjoying herself, I see.
December 19th, 2009 at 3:16 am
A) They’re both shameless exhibitionists
B) Who the heck does he think he is, Inigo Montoya?
December 19th, 2009 at 3:41 am
The Kivalians are getting more interesting to me… Count Tethik knows how to box and Yatta-ta is skilled enough at fencing to be almost on par with Zona. I liked how his Kivalian prudishness made him stop and double check that it was okay to use the throne as a step ladder.
But why is Zona playing up to Yatta’s strengths and fighting on a narrow bridge where he might have an edge in footwork?
December 19th, 2009 at 3:45 am
Am I the only one who stared at the crotch-shot Zona gave? I hate/love being immature sometimes…
This is getting good. I thought it would be a quick fix and he’d get his butt kicked. Now I”m really wondering what’s gonna happen
December 19th, 2009 at 4:19 am
@Shyster: Zona may be doing that exactly because of the increased challenge. There is nothing at risk for her in this contest save possibly a little personal embarrassment, after all. On the other hand, she _is_ having fun and what better way to have even more fun than to step up the challenge?
December 19th, 2009 at 4:31 am
She…is checking out his butt. Please, JED, tell me she’s checking out his butt! It looks like a fiiiiine butt from here! XD
December 19th, 2009 at 4:32 am
(er, Ipola, I mean…)
December 19th, 2009 at 5:02 am
@The Old Hack: I’m not so sure I agree, though she is totally having fun with the duel she has plenty to lose, way more then Yatta-ta. She is Erogenia’s “Undefeated” Champion, I doubt this would be enough to cost her the title of Champion (especially since Yatta’s Kavalian) but that still isn’t something small. She won’t be a little embarassed she’ll be shattered becasue I doubt she’s used to losing. And being beaten by a puny Kavalian would be even more humiliating, can you imagine what the fire tribe would start saying? That is IF she loses, which I don’t see happening no matter how much I would like to see it.
Ultimately it depends how much honour is invested in a “wooden duel” though so you may be right.
December 19th, 2009 at 5:11 am
I’m wondering about the change in venue myself. Perhaps to make it more challenging, restricting mobility somewhat? But this hampers Zona every bit as much, or more, as it would Yatta. Hmmm….
December 19th, 2009 at 5:35 am
For my money, this isn’t the first time she’s fought up there, and that would give her an advantage.
December 19th, 2009 at 7:40 am
Actually now that I think about it, maybe this gives Zona an advantage more then Yatta. He won’t be able to do his fancy back flips and such while she can just use her strength to force him off the, um, catwalk/horizontal pillar or whatever you call that thing.
December 19th, 2009 at 8:10 am
And? The fight is about disarmament, and i don’t think he will have a problem with such a short fall. So he can dodge all he want to, ever out of the ledge. Also, he is free to do backflipps. Anyway, it does however limit the sidesteps. Anyway regardless if he looses now, he have gained the respect of most people here. Im i right?
December 19th, 2009 at 9:11 am
Shyster: They’re called megaliths.
Love Zona’s “Oh it’s on!” face in the first panel. And yeah, Ipola was definitely chacking out Ipola’s ass. Hey, she may be Queen but she ain’t dead.
December 19th, 2009 at 9:26 am
God I love how Yatta-ta’s hair is blowing in the last panel.
This fight just spun back from silly to epic.
December 19th, 2009 at 9:38 am
I’m not a lefty either! HAHAHAHAH
December 19th, 2009 at 10:19 am
…as much as I hate to say it XD, the last panel kinda say “bring it bitch,” >.> epic page Jed XD lol.
December 19th, 2009 at 10:22 am
Yatta actually looks a bit shmexeh in the bottom left panel…
December 19th, 2009 at 10:52 am
Tricksterson, I hope you meant that Ipola was checking out _Yatta’s_ behind. >.<
And Shyster, I really doubt it would impact Zona’s rep that much to lose in a duel of this kind. After all, it is just a test of skill, and in these it is perfectly permissible to try to test your own skill as well as that of your opponent. Therefore they are an ideal time to try out different moves and new tricks even if they might cost you the game.
December 19th, 2009 at 11:12 am
Lol, I don’t think Ipola is the only one checking out Yatta’s ass.
Zona looks like she’s really having fun.
December 19th, 2009 at 11:56 am
I must say, Yatta is really showing his stuff here. The dude’s got some mad skillz with that sword, and some swashbuckling style to go with it.
I hereby nominate this fight as one of The Challenges of Zona’s Crowning Moments of Awesome. All in favor say aye!
December 19th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
I dunno why, but this shifting the sword to the other hand, reminds me The Chatty Duel from The Princess Bride. Offcourse, they chatted, those two don’t.
Inigo Montoya : You’re wonderful.
Man in Black : Thank you. I work hard to counter.
Inigo Montoya : I admit, you’re better than me!
Man in Black : Then why are you smiling ?
Inigo Montoya : Because I know something you don’t know!
Man in Black : And what is that ?
Inigo Montoya : I .. am not left handed !!
**sword changes hands**
**forces Man in Black backwards**
Man in Black : You’re amazing!
Inigo Montoya : Have to be after 20 years (of sword training)
Man in Black : There’s something I ought to tell you.
Inigo Montoya : Tell me
Man in Black : I’m not left handed either!
**sword changes hands**
**after a brief exchange Inigo Montoya is disarmed but he regains his sword**
Inigo Montoya : Who are you ?
Man in Black : Noone of consequence.
Inigo Montoya : I must know!
Men in Black : Get used to disappointment.
Inigo Montoya : ok.
**more furious fighting Inigo Montoya is disarmed once again**
**he falls on his knees**
Inigo Montoya : Kill me quickly.
Man in Black : I would as soon destroy a stained glass windows as an artist such as yourself!
Man in Black : However - Since I can’t have you following me either …
**knocks out Inigo Montoya with the hilt of his sword**
Man in Blakc : Please understand, I hold you in the highest respect.
**Man in Black leaves*
There’s youtube video of it named “The Chatty Duel—The Princess Bride”
December 19th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
@sheela: Well a few minor misquotes but I will not be that much of a geek to point them out…
I must say I am impressed with Yatta, as a swordsman he is much better than I expected and He is still mentally composed enough to not have forgotten where he is or his manners. His asking the Queen before continuing says more than words where his mental state is. Impressive I say rather than prudish.
December 19th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Yatta is very polite.
December 19th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Yatta-ta strikes me as The Geek of Swords. His skills and common sense outside his one field of expertise are attenuated - however, within that one field he is an expert on, he is King Geek.
December 19th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Yes, I do like how polite Yatta-ta is, first asking for permission, then thanking Her Maj for granting it. But that actually fits in with his self-view of his own character. He considers himself a grand swordsman (whether or not it is true, though we’re seeing that at least some of it is), a man of honor rather than brute force (he didn’t bushwhack or ambush Zona & company, he wanted a fair challenge and an honorable fight), and a noble man (whether or not he’s a nobleman by birth, he seems to be aiming his self-view at the qualities of being noble by one’s nature).
All in all, he may be a bit narrowminded in his pursuit of fame (and women, lots and lots of women, to paraphrase his own mutterings earlier in the story), but he does have some depth to his character. He’s a delusional idealist…but he’s still a good man. At least, insofar as we can see. JED may have some tricks up his artistic sleeves.
Definitely looking forward to more.
And that is still a mighty-fine butt on Yatta-ta, there. Yay for skin-tight breeches!
December 19th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
Yes I meant she was checking out Yatta’s butt.
I’m wondering if maybe Yatta comes from one of those minor noble houses that is pretty much impoverished so that their honor and manners are all they have to cling to.
Sleepinin: It does have a trope page.
December 20th, 2009 at 1:19 am
That grin on Zona is pure evil. She’s got something up her non-existent sleeve.
December 20th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Remember, this is Zona’s home turf. I definitely don’t think she’d take the challenge where she didn’t think she’d have an edge. She may have made a game of playing on top of those stones with her eyes closed, or running backwards. Or both.
Zona may allow Yatta to ‘force’ her to the back of the lintel (the horizontal stones on the top), then hop back to the next one. While he’s jumping after her, he’s committed by the laws of motion to his jumping arc, and cannot benefit from footwork, because he’s unanchored and has no leverage.
With her demonstrated reaction speed, she may be able to simply grab his sword and hold it until he lets go, dropping unharmed and disarmed to the ground below.
December 20th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
I don’t think so, Lictre. If she were going to do that, she already had the opportunity when he leaped onto the first megalith. I think it’s more likely that she took the battle up onto the platform in order to see how good he is when he has limited room to maneuver.
As anyone who has fought/sparred in a tournament situation can tell you- it’s easy to defend yourself when you have plenty of room to dodge, but when you don’t have room to avoid an attack, your blocks and parries need to be spot on or you ARE going to get hit.
December 20th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
Tricksterson, that’s a good idea; I can totally imagine him being the son of an impoverished Kivalian noble household…
December 20th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
I agree with The Last Garou, I think her approach to this has changed. At first she just wanted him out of her hair, after the double disarm I think she wants to find out just how good this guy is. I suspect it’s been a long time, if ever, since she’s fought anyone of this caliber.
December 20th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
So, I think Zona is setting Yatta up as a sacrificial lamb to Mama Ipola’s libido. No accident her using the throne as a stepping stone thereby forcing Yatta along the same route whereby Queenie get a good shot at his ass and package. Now, will Yatta survive…
December 20th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
I have decided what the outcome of next page will be. Ever more ferocious sparring until both duelists have turned into blurs, at which point the trilithon will collapse from the vibrations and dump both of them right next to a by now rather irritated Ipola.
…what? >_>
December 20th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
still hoping the man in cloths wins
December 21st, 2009 at 9:45 am
Inigo: You are using Bonetti’s Defense against me eh?
MIB: I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain…
December 21st, 2009 at 2:17 pm
Actually if Yatta’s *fencing* skill is much higher than Zona’s, which I think is entirely possible, this might be an oopsie for Zona if she did it thinking to press him.
Two casters to protect (although Mentl should be able to turn out to be a close combat caster a lot more than Tula), the party needs another tank.
December 21st, 2009 at 4:29 pm
“You are using bonichelles defence against me…….”
December 21st, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Offcourse he’s fencing skills are better … but when it down to it, Zona has more than fencing skills to bring to the fight.
And that could be the deciding factor in this spar.
December 21st, 2009 at 7:11 pm
oh my .. so many spelling and grammar mistakes in my last post.
yikes.
December 21st, 2009 at 8:07 pm
aPrincess - Yes, she actually is.
fairportfan - A) Yes, especially about being shameless.
B) He is (cue fanfare) YATTA-TA of IR ANIS! FINEST SWORDSMAN IN *ALL OF KIVALIA!!!*
Shyster - All the characters should be interesting, and I’m glad you find them so. It isn’t prudishness so much as deference. He didn’t particularly want to jump the queen - so to speak - without her permission.
Lynnix - Stare all ya want. If I leave anything exposed it’s by accident. And Zona don’t care a bean. And very gratifying that I have you wondering. hehehe …
The Old Hack - Pretty much how I thought. It’s flashy, and this is one of the moments in these types of stories where we get flash.
Jean - She is *totally* checking out his butt. So is Karna.
The MacNut - Sauce for the gander.
Addup2 - Actually, that might make an interesting story …
Gremalkin - It appears you are right. But then, appearances, as they say …
Tricksterson - Ipola was checking it, and Karna may be old, but she ain’t dead, either.
Adamzero - Well, we’ll spin and spin until it turns out … I think I made his hair a *little* too long in that shot, but WTH.
shaolin - And he isn’t.
zangoules - Rather say that he is showing determination and insouciance.
Ami - You caught him in a good moment. It’s like the difference between Hugh Lorie as Prince George and as House.
Lora - Yep, and yep.
Sleepinin - Well, I’ll let y’all decide that. For me, it’s just the next part of the storeh …
Sheela - Ah, but there’s no chat here. Both are concentrating mos’ ferocilously!
calisto - As I said, being killed for him would not be as great a tragedy as being kicked out of the fight. So he’s watching his manners.
Black Ethel - Yes, right now he is.
Jim Farris - “The Geek Of Swords!!!!” I laughed out loud when I read that! I have to make a Tarot card with him in his typical pose with that insufferable grin of his …
SamuraiDemonPuppy - She always has something up her sleeve, but because she’s the opposite of devious, it’s in plain sight. Of course, if you don’t pay attention, that’s YOUR fault.
Lictre - Could be, could be …
Ga’Tor - I don’t know, but it would be a helluva way to go. Ask Uthic, the Wolf King who seems to have a permanent grin on his face whenever Ipola is mentioned …
Lonely ninja - We all live in hope, especially Yatta-ta.
Elfguy - Heh.
Kamatu - At this point, they’re only beginning to show what they can do, so it remains to be seen whose what is better. On some of that, of course, it is a matter of gender preference …
Pat - Touche ‘
Sheela - Don’t worry, kid. We grade on a curve, here.
December 21st, 2009 at 8:16 pm
Hmm. This is definitely getting interesting. And I kinda agree with the viewpoint that Zona may have just made a big mistake. After all, it’s not like there’s really any ‘ring out’ rules on this thing. Just first to be disarmed loses. If he has to jump off of it to prevent being disarmed, there’s no real loss on his part. But if he can use the limited area up there to his advantage, like say using Zona’s strength against her somehow to ‘throw’ her off the top of the megalith, he could definitely turn the tables on our heroine.
December 21st, 2009 at 9:10 pm
OMIGAWD! Geek of Swords Tarot Card! If you ever do that, please please post it. I’d so love to see it.
December 21st, 2009 at 9:30 pm
LOL@aprincess, a tarot deck using our heroes and villains would be amusing. Don’t know that there would be much of a market for it, but it would be cute.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:34 am
Fellow programs, have you forgotten?
Zona is going to get help from an old advasery that has defeated poor Yatta-Ta before.
Gravity.
December 22nd, 2009 at 2:11 am
–Curse you, Gravity, and the way you make my buttered toast land upside down, every single time! *shakes butterknife-clenching fist*
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:02 am
The only way to make sure that never happens is to tie the toast to the back of a cat butter side up.
Only problem would be getting the poor cat down.
-Gene Catlow
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:30 am
@Kamatu: I suppose Zona would be Strength, Mentl would be The Magician, Tula would be The High Priestess, Maldik would be The Fool, Queen Yanora would be The Empress, Vito would be The Hermit, Queen Ipola would be Temperance, Gorshash would be The Devil and Tethik would be the Hierophant…
Yatta-ta will remain the Geek of Swords for me.
December 22nd, 2009 at 8:29 am
Don’t forget Shuagh! He’d be “DEATH.”
December 22nd, 2009 at 10:39 am
I think Tula would be the Moon, not the High Priestess. Not yet, anyways.
December 22nd, 2009 at 10:39 am
I’d give Yatta-ta the “Joker” card myself @_@
December 22nd, 2009 at 2:19 pm
@Uhl: I’m not sure. I think Shuagh would be The Tower, myself. Eh well, it was just a moment’s fancy anyway. Maybe we could talk JED into doing just a couple of these cards for fun sometime, though? *scratches head*
December 22nd, 2009 at 2:23 pm
I like the idea of Yatta-Ta’s main enemy being Gravity itself.
Offcourse, if gravity does defeat him once again, there’s a chance he falls down, BOOM, into the lap of Queen Ipola !!
Such a slight would have to be punished severely and thoroughly !!
.. by the queen in person ..
.. in her own tent ..
.. repeatedly ..
December 22nd, 2009 at 6:27 pm
On the subject of a Zona Tarot, they’d make great bonus pages wouldn’t they?
December 22nd, 2009 at 7:23 pm
On the subject of buttered toast - a little something from the Basement of Warehouse 23 -
“You open one of the 999 boxes on this floor and find… A cube made of six pieces of toast glued together, butter side in. The bottom of the box is carpeted, and the cube is floating in the center of the box, slowly spinning.”
^_^
December 23rd, 2009 at 4:06 pm
I am forseeing…. the fight continues on for a bit, Yatta maybe pressing Zona for a moment. But eventually, the lack of dosging space forces him to rely on sword play only. Which wears him out, since he’s not use to fighting all day long. Then Zona stops playing nice and uses her full strength, losing all finesse and powering his sword from his hand. Yatta falls off, and lands at the queen’s feet. He gathers to his knees and appologizes for taking up her time with his foolishness. And the queen becomes smitten. And Yatta is never seen again outside of the tribe’s land. Over the next few years, the queen’s honor guard becomes renouned for their power AND their incredible fencing skills.
May 3rd, 2011 at 12:36 pm
Did anyone else get a “I am not left handed” Princess Bride moment there
