Do they have geas in Erogenia/Kivalia? I only say this because of the change in Yatta-ta’s face whenever he comes close to whatever is the *real* reason for him coming here. When he’s not spouting his ‘quest BS,’ It’s almost as if he doesn’t know. This is, of course, me assuming JED never puts in an ‘accidental’ expression. Very subtle, JED’s faces can be.

This is full of great lines.
“How do you know so much about it?” “Queen?” “Ah” And, “Can we kill him now?” “Please?”

    Ir Anis? Thrrrp!

Wait let me think about it. hmm wait a moment . . . .
man and he still just looks like he thinks this isn’t happening. serious trouble with his head. me personally i would have been looking around for a line off escape, even as i doubt there is one in the middle of a eroginian town.

  5. RandonessIncarnate

certainly can’ fight them all off.

  6. Moox
    November 20th, 2009 at 3:57 am

    This is just so great.
Prediction: The queen will order that Yatta-Ta fight someone, and we’ll get to see the greatest swordsman in all Kivalia in action.
Also: I love her “Shhh, Queen thinking” face.

  7. The MacNut
    November 20th, 2009 at 4:30 am

Can this idiot really not understand the deadly peril he’s in, that his very life hinges on the Queen’s word? Sure looks that way in the last panel, where I’m sure the guards are NOT joking, despite their smiles.

  8. AdamZero
    November 20th, 2009 at 4:39 am

I’m with Raoul, I’m thinking Yatta’s got something heavy on his shoulders that he’s not exactly being forward about.

Last panel’s totally a “This is serious,” face.

Somehow I feel Mister-Ta has more in the ‘Big Game’ plan than just the ‘reappearing buffoon’.

  9. The Old Hack
    November 20th, 2009 at 5:44 am

Confirmed. There is more to Yatta-ta than imbecilic persistence. He knew all of Ipona’s titles and that it would be courteous to use them. Also, it did not come as a shock to him that he had committed a grave offense by entering the Valley of the Moon without invitation.

Zona, on the other hand, just got caught out underestimating her own mother. Oops.

  10. Lora
    November 20th, 2009 at 6:05 am

Heh, I love the guards and their smiles as they ask for permission to kill Yatta-ta. :) They look like it’s some kind of christmas present.

  11. The MacNut
    November 20th, 2009 at 6:06 am

I love how Mentl is just silently taking it all in, keeping his mouth shut and just observing. True he’s out of his depth here, but he’s being remarkably…cool about it.

The ladies may even forget he’s there if this keeps up ;)

  12. taltamir

pretty please with hearts on top?

  13. Tricksterson
    November 20th, 2009 at 7:14 am

Love Yatta’s face in the next to last panel like he’s not sure if the guards are having him on or not. This page is more subtle than the last two but just as funny. For some reason I’m suddenly reminded by Yatta of D’Artagnon at the brginning of The Three Musketeers. Not actually unintelligent but naive to the point where he seems idiotic and constantly getting into trouble unintentionally. I also recall that D’Artagnon was a damn good swordsman.

I am the only one that’s thinking Ginger’s tights have been through the wash a few too many times?

  15. ladygreensleeves
    November 20th, 2009 at 7:30 am

The second to last panel made me giggle… “Can we kill him now? “Please?” I can just see the guard who asked ‘please’ giving puppy-dog eyes to Queen Ipola. And it seems that Yatta Ta, the Great Asshat, isn’t as much of an asshat as we originally thought! I wonder what his REAL quest is. Wonderful page, as always, J.E! ^_^

  16. Kamatu
    November 20th, 2009 at 7:56 am

Heh, guys I’ve been harping on Yatta for ages for a reason. Ok, maybe not harping, but at least putting a few shots in. He is just too useful as a variation on a theme in adventure fiction. Note that he doesn’t compare unfavorably to the two guards in a physical sense, it is just that Zona is Zona…..

  17. Jim Farris
    November 20th, 2009 at 8:04 am

Oh, no! Is our hero doomed?! Will Yatta-Gilligan end up losing his head to Ginger and Marty-Arne? Tune in next time to find out, Adventure fans - same Yatta-time, same Yatta channel!

  18. Jinx
    November 20th, 2009 at 8:10 am

“Queen….” and in one word Ipola reminds Zona that there is more to the job of reigning over a nation than being the reigning champion — so so so classic. If Zona is going to take over as heir apparent for the United Tribes, she needs to step up her political game. On the other hand, does it strike anyone else that Ipola would like to see both girls on the throne as a team?
And yeah, Mentl staying quiet and taking it all in shows all kinds of class.

  19. Addup2
    November 20th, 2009 at 8:35 am

“I Just Had To” - I can’t see Ipola letting that go - she’ll want a proper explanation from Yatta, so I don’t think she’ll let the guards kill him yet - though a quick tune from Mentl with the lyrics along the lines of tell me might quicken things up!

  20. Someguy
    November 20th, 2009 at 8:59 am

Hmm feeling rather bloodthirsty today aren’t we boys?

  21. RevWaldo
    November 20th, 2009 at 9:04 am

What will the great wise Queen decide as the best way to balance the Cha? Have Zona and Yatta (and Mentl) quickly do the deed. Have Yatta watch as Zona and Mentl do the deed. Explain to Yatta that Mentl beat Zona in a fair “wrestling” match and that therefore Yatta is just too late.

Either way I think it will take a little more than “knock knock. Who’s there? IT’S REALITY!” to convince Yatta

  22. ladygreensleeves
    November 20th, 2009 at 10:06 am

Another thought… when Ipola says “Queen…”, it reminds me of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie. “You cheated!” “Pirate…”
Although I think that Ipola would probably tie Jack Sparrow in a knot for his cheek. OR they’d hit it off and he’d become a tribe member. Could go either way… because he IS Captain Jack Sparrow.

  23. Tricksterson
    November 20th, 2009 at 10:35 am

The way they said it i don’t think the guards really want to kill him, he’s too much fun.

  24. Deris
    November 20th, 2009 at 10:41 am

I wouldn’t be overly impressed that he knows all the queens titles. I’ve met people that speek klingon and know “Star Dates” to fictional events…. It’s easy to memorise things if your infatuated with them as Yatta is with Zona and by extention her family. If anything it shows his level of infatuation and perhaps an amount of devotion to that infatuation.
If he is an idiot with an infatuation it may be that he will be let off with a minor puishment and just sent packing. We shall see what is instore I am sure.
We will have to see if he has another reason for coming into a “restricted area” besides beeing a fool chasing a fantasy.

  25. Steinar
    November 20th, 2009 at 10:56 am

ladygreensleeves: Well, personally I think Yatta-ta is sent by the Sun to get Zona to travel south to reunite her mommy and daddy. ;)

  26. Sleepinin
    November 20th, 2009 at 11:15 am

@ladygreensleeves Jack Sparrow would probably recieve ringing slaps from Ipola, Tula, AND Zona, actually.

But you have to love Yatta’s unflappability here, actually. He hasn’t lost his temper at all from that laugh-fest in the last comic. That in and of itself is deserving of some props.

    November 20th, 2009 at 11:32 am

Oh, my. VERY scary queen. She makes Yanora look like a piker.

  28. Matti
    November 20th, 2009 at 11:52 am

To kill foreign nobleman by order of queen herself? There have been wars for lesser reasons…

  29. reddwarf
    November 20th, 2009 at 12:26 pm

I think the guards are mainly having some fun here — while I’m sure there are occasions when they definitely do kill intruders, I think they would be very surprised if Ipola agreed. I think they’re actually asking her “So what *do* we do with this guy?” A test of Yatta’s skill with a sword would be a good thing — both to test the truth of his claim, and to serve as a test of his “worthiness” to stay in the valley. But not against Zona, not with Yatta’s fixation - perhaps this is a good time to bring Rannik into the picture? I’m enjoying seeing bits of the real Yatta underneath his clownish facade — and yes, Ipola will definitely want to know why he *must* do this - even knowing the possible consequences.

  30. Mish_Lady
    November 20th, 2009 at 12:39 pm

I love Mentl’s face, like “yeah that’s my sweetie for you.” There is a chance that if Yatta-Ta is on a mission, it might be to: a) test him, b) actually test how easy it is to get into the valley by unknown quantities, whether good or evil, c) he knows someone who knows the ladies (Zonn perhaps, as was thought of earlier) and who has heard stories of Zona and has fallen in love. Yatta’s statement of “no matter what the cost” might also indicate that he was saved by someone and feels that he needs to prove himself by challenging Zona. Or for some other reason that we do not know of and that JE will pull out of left field, leaving his fans speechless with awe. As one writer to another-good job!

  31. aPrincess
    November 20th, 2009 at 2:15 pm

Even though she uses the words ‘deadly offense to the cha’, I have to believe that killing someone would be considered THE worst offense to THEIR cha, and therefore Ipola won’t just kill Yatta out of hand.

I think the guards are trying to scare Yatta a bit, and having fun with it. I mean, he just gave the whole valley the best laugh they’ve had in ten years…

  32. Jean
    November 20th, 2009 at 3:31 pm

Jim Farris…you naughty, naughty poster. I just about spat my lunch out, trying not to laugh. “Ginger & Marty-Arne”–bahahahaha! Okay…I’ll bite. Who are the Skipper, the Professor, and the Howells?

  33. Uhl
    November 20th, 2009 at 4:03 pm

I think Mentl would be the professor. He does make napalm out of his hands you know.

  34. adtz
    November 20th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

Note that Yatta could be considered insane, so it would be an offense against Cha to kill him. They have to decide whether he is nuts or not before he can face a real challenge.

  35. Kaila
    November 20th, 2009 at 11:50 pm

Seconding what Jean said…it seems I do that a bit…

    Thank God I wasn’t eating.

  36. Aust
    November 21st, 2009 at 12:10 am

Oh God… the expression on the guards’ faces… it’s like they’re asking their mom if they can keep a puppy that followed them home.

I wonder what Ipola’s decision will be? My money is on her making Yatta-ta perform some service to the Moon Tribe for his transgression… after Zona gets her shot at him for being such a royal pain in the ass. And after he’s had a few days to let the swelling go down XD.

  37. Ed
    November 21st, 2009 at 1:50 am

I also think it is a bluff on all the parts… hey, if Jerry Lee Mentl starts to evoke GBOF, even if he calls it off the display might impress the local the relative runt is a powerful mage…

Off with his head! (Sorry, couldn’t resist the Alice in Wonderland bit.)

Great page as always JED. Can’t wait until Tuesday!

He might want to wed her for her tribes strength. After all it has happened out here in realaity why not there. step one find strong people. step two find princess or other marriable subject. step three find a reason to get them to marry you. step four go to aid of your country with thier strength. after a lot of convincing

ok is it me or does not the name Yatta ta seems extremely comical. It seems extremely fitting a name for him.

    @adtz

Didn’t Yanora say something about castration regarding the insane when she was speaking to Zona……@_@

  43. Peregrin
    November 21st, 2009 at 1:44 pm

The “can we kill him now?” made me flash on Steven Brust’s Jhereg series, when Loiosh keep saying, “Can I eat him, Boss? Can I?” They’re not done laughing, which makes me think that the comments are entirely for his benefit. These guys know the rules - This is Ippola’s decision.

As for what happens next… Well, all we know for SURE is that it will be interesting and very Solomon. Yes, she’s going to want to know more - this is someone who values knowledge and appreciates how much you need it to make the right decision. She will definitely want to make the right decision - balancing the cha is everything.

My guess - She presses him for the full details. “I had to” is not good enough. I’d say that he will probably end up getting to fight Zona after all, although I seriously doubt he wins the prize he’s after regardless of the result.

  44. Quicksilver
    November 21st, 2009 at 4:15 pm

Hmm… could it be that the esteemed queen just made up all that information about Ir Anis? Could explain his face, in that panel…

  45. calisto
    November 21st, 2009 at 5:02 pm

jhereg only eat tekla that are already dead. But yes it reminded me of him to though he would be quick to point out he isn’t as tall. :)

  46. Kosine
    November 21st, 2009 at 9:34 pm

“For a Kivalian, that’s rare”… Ippola actually sounds impressed there. And yet I do not spot a thoughtful smile in that last panel. I honestly cannot predict what-

No, wait, yes I can. I predict that Yatta-Ta will live long enough to disappear in a hilarious fashion, further establishing his presence in the comic, and then prove to actually have some value to the plot before his untimely (and melodramatic) demise.

  47. Hypertrophobic
    November 22nd, 2009 at 12:54 am

The exchange with between Zona and Ippola actually remind me more of MP&THG:

Bridgekeeper: What… is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?
King Arthur: What do you mean? An African or European swallow?
    Bridgekeeper: Huh? I… I don’t know that.
    [he is thrown over]
    Bridgekeeper: Auuuuuuuugh.
Sir Bedevere: How do know so much about swallows?
King Arthur: Well, you have to know these things when you’re a king, you know.

  48. Hypertrophobic
    November 22nd, 2009 at 12:59 am

Oh, and Ippola has her left eyebrow raised, so while I think Yatta-ta will survive his sacrilege, I think Ippola is going to come up with a very unusual and yet fitting punsihment.

  49. Addup2
    November 22nd, 2009 at 6:47 am

My biggest problem is that I keep thinking of Miranda Richardson in Blackadder as Queen Bess - “Who’s Queen”! Which really doesn.t fit well with frame 5.

  50. Jim Farris
    November 22nd, 2009 at 12:11 pm

@Jean: I meant it as a one-off joke, sorry. The GI characters don’t really have fits in Zona.

  51. Deris
    November 23rd, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Yatta-ta from Ir Anis, every time I read that I can’t help think, he must be from the ass end of the continent. (Kinda like New Jersey….where I was born.) (P.S.: Ir Anis sounds like “your anus” , you must have thought it too.)

  52. Jean
    November 23rd, 2009 at 11:45 pm

Jim Farris: Yeah…the Howells alone would give us fits trying to pick out any two people, let alone a married couple…

  53. Sleepinin
    November 24th, 2009 at 8:52 am

One thing’s for sure, Ipola is a hell of a lot more effective at ruling a country than Maldik is XD

  54. Someguy
    November 24th, 2009 at 11:46 am

  55. Skallabjorn
    November 24th, 2009 at 2:30 pm

On the other hand, the drive to be the best may be what is pushing him to this. As an Adrian (similar to SCA) I cannot count how many times I have seen this (or felt it myself). If you are going to compete, compete with the best.

  56. The Old Hack
    November 24th, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Interesting comparison, Sleepinin. Ipona is not only a ruler and a leader but a visionary as well; she uses the assistance of her advisors but is ultimately the one in charge. Maldik, on the other hand, has no idea of how to run a kingdom and has no vision, merely shallow and undirected ambition. In a stroke of true irony, he has made enemies of the two people who actually ran the kingdom and he is now wholly dependent on an enemy bent on destroying it.

Maldik, I feel, qualifies as a true antigenius.

  57. Jean
    November 24th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

An excellent way of putting it, Old Hack.

  58. Jean
    November 24th, 2009 at 10:44 pm

…Although Maldik might know how to run a kingdom; he was raised a prince and probably paid attention to some of his lessons. I would judge that he does not know how to run a kingdom *well*, but I think he does know how to run it. I do agree that he has indeed alienated the two people who could and did make it run well. That’ll screw him over bigtime.
