    Yay, new page!

…Nope, I’m still getting the impression that Her Maj looks like a much, much prettier, sexier, redheaded, hawt version of one of my cousins…and I can’t wait to find out what history she and the Queen (Naughty) Mum of the Kivalians have between them, given Her Other Maj’s parting comment in that letter we saw. (The letter, I should point out, that dear Count Tethik has just successfully carried into Bull Territory.)

i love the chershire cat grin on the queen!

Hoo boy! Talk about being on top of the situation. And if Mentl was worried about meeting Mom before, he’s totally flabbergasted now.

I admit, I am kind of hoping that Dad will appear in the story some day, too. I liked what I read about him in the background story.

That third panel is simply awesome. Woohoo!

  5. The MacNut
    November 4th, 2009 at 3:04 am

A powerful woman, queen of his girlfriend’s tribe, the mother of said girlfriend, AND she knows a lot about him before they’ve even exchanged greetings?

Oh yeah, Mentl’s TOTALLY intimidated now. Hope Ipola goes easy on the poor guy…

  6. Moox
    November 4th, 2009 at 3:34 am

Great page, as usual. Dramatic storytelling, snappy dialogue, professional looking images, and general sexiness.
    A couple questions though…
Is the “make way” dude in panel 1 a really really huge guy? Or is he just in the foreground?
Also, who is he yelling so enthusiastically at? There seems to be no one in the way.
Why do none of the royal women look alike? Similar eyes and noses, but the hair is way different. This isn’t really a serious question, but seeing them all together like this brings it to mind. Oh, they all have the same manic grin, which seems to be an Erogenian thing in general.

Don’t take these points too much too heart, you know I’m your biggest fan.
Also, I love the tilted sad-puppy-dog-face of our favorite admirer of Tula in panel two. The body language in this comic is extremely masterful.

    November 4th, 2009 at 3:43 am

This seems to be going well, atleast he is not airborn…
There is some teeasing from the queen, wich is a good thing.
Think we can signal the all clear, untill the party when the queen takes mentl aside for a litte private chat. The standard “loosing life & limb if you hurt her” speach… ;) And as Moox said, great body languare, nice facial expresions as well. Keep upp the good work, it IS apreciated.

    Her Majesty…

    …has two chins.

    I cannot take my mind off this one little detail. O_O;;;

  9. Lora
    November 4th, 2009 at 4:45 am

Lol, Mom surprises Mentl. I wonder if the letter has reached Ipola yet?

  10. Acipenser
    November 4th, 2009 at 4:57 am

Hey, the bird wasn’t all that little!

    Nice page, JED.

  11. Jason
    November 4th, 2009 at 5:11 am

Moox- The three women all have similar facial structure- as for the hair, a really vivid fiery red is a very submissive genetic trait, meaning that the gene inherited from the father would affect the hair colouration. Given that we’ve never met the fathers- and that the sisters do have different ones- it seems perfectly reasonable for them to have different hair. In fact, I’ve seen it happen myself- a vividly red-headed aunt had two girls, one with blonde hair and one with brown to her brown-haired husband.
Of course genetics in this world could be totally different but that’s just my take.

As for the dude calling people to make way- well, essentially he’s yelling that the queen’s there and is about to glomp her kids. I imagine it’s as much to get attention as to get the people to move aside. And come on- if you had that job wouldn’t YOU be enthusiastic? I sure would be!

  12. LN
    November 4th, 2009 at 5:42 am

    Jason - recessive trait.

And as though it’s even necessary to say it anymore, JE, (though I’m not about to stop,) great page. Again.

  13. Peregrin
    November 4th, 2009 at 5:47 am

Herald is a pretty standard courtly job. Can’t have anyone embarrassing themselves because they didn’t know the pointy hats are in the room. Can’t tell if he’s just that huge, but perhaps - they do seem to grow them large around here.

I think I’m learning to read Erogenian expressions, though. At first those grins seemed on the sly side - like, “I’m imagining you naked” sly. (well, maybe they are, but…) I now believe that their smiles are a part of their innate joy of life, and they smile with their entire faces. No half-measures from these people. They like you or they don’t - and it seems to me that Mama likes what she knows of Mentl.

  14. AdamZero
    November 4th, 2009 at 6:14 am

SOME-bodies got a rubber neck in panel two…

    hahhaa

  15. Jean
    November 4th, 2009 at 7:01 am

I think the reason why the herald is so tall in that first panel is because of the *terrain*. If you notice the way how the land slopes around the entrance sort of in a U shape (no doubt from the ground being trodden upon for centuries), then it goes UP toward the girls and Mentl? Yeah, he’s standing on a higher bit of land. You can see his boots toward the bottom of that first panel, as well as most of the length of his legs is accounted for…yep, I’d say he’s standing on a higher bit of ground than the others.

  16. Jim Farris
    November 4th, 2009 at 7:46 am

I do not think the herald is standing on higher ground. Given that the herald’s head is bigger than the queen’s in the first image then smaller in the second, I’d say it’s simple perspective combined with low camera angle in the first image. Things that are closer look bigger than things that are farther away.

  17. Addup2
    November 4th, 2009 at 7:55 am

If you are the herald it would make sense to go for a higher bit of ground so that you could see if everyone was taking notice of what you’d just said.

On another note - are the elderly two with the staves the local village elders, or is one of them Karna the priestess?

  18. Tricksterson
    November 4th, 2009 at 7:57 am

Is it me or does Ipola look older than in the page she was introduced? And how tall is Zona? I knew she was big but somehow standing next to her mom makes her look even bigger.

  19. Uhl
    November 4th, 2009 at 8:25 am

Herald guy is VITO in disguise! And yes he is on (slightly) higher ground.

  20. Lora
    November 4th, 2009 at 9:02 am

Y’know I wouldn’t have thought it possible, but Ipola looks like she might have less arm strength than me… :P Priestesses don’t do fysical work?

  21. Deris
    November 4th, 2009 at 9:20 am

She really was talking to that bird, cool. I wonder how smart birds are….. Great way to unsettle your daughters new BF though. Look at his eyes, stunned or flabergasted would be about right. And that look in her eyes, I think Mental is in for some “all in fun” teasing. Now I can’t wait to see what happens at the feast.
This story is just dragging me along, good stuff. Is there a print version?

  22. Sleepinin
    November 4th, 2009 at 10:44 am

    Sweet mother of mammaries!

The three of them lined up like that make for quite the interesting picture, that’s for sure. And the artwork is remarkable, I can actually see a real family resemblance between the three, not something a lot of artists take the time to do in webcomics.

  23. JE Draft
    November 4th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

Jean - All will be revealed in time, though I do wish I knew your friend if she’s *anything* like my moon queen. :)

la.femme.amelie - Yes, I worked on that one a bit. I think it;s fairly successful.

The Old Hack - Ipola has not successfully cat-herded the nine fractious and warlike Erogenian tribes for 25 years on good looks alone. (though that doesn’t hurt) Let’s just say her intel is very good.

You will meet Zonn soon, because I need ducats and I am working on a short comic to reward contributions with called “How I Met Your Father.” Takes place over twenty-six years ago. You’ll meet the young Lion tribe wanderer and the newly-crowned queen of the Moon Tribe - and they will meet each other for the first time.

Ted - Yeah, well, as Bess Motta said in “Terminator” - “More than mortal man deserves!”

The MacNut - She probably won’t tear him up too badly. ;)

Moox - The lefthand bodyguard is calling to people in the scene who are completely obscured by Mentl and the gals in the foreground. I thought of putting more closer around or in front of Ipola but the effect was to make the composition too busy and distract from her entrance. And no fear - I am learning to take myself less seriously. The drugs are working … =D

Gremalkin - Thanks! Hopefully this next one will be ready by Friday, since there’s no change of scene, just working different poses.

Kosetsu - Yes, Ipola has a deep cleft in her chin. Notice Tula inherited that, while Zona did not. Little creative choice there. ;)

Lora - Yes, Ipola’s full of surprises. And — letter? What letter? ;)

Acipenser - The queen is using a little poetic license, there. And thank you very much!

Jason - Genetics in Erogenia is virtually identical to Earth, and you have outlined it nicely. In point of fact I have light brown hair and dark eyebrows, eyes and lashes while my brother (same parents) is very fair indeed, blonde and blue-eyed. And the bodyguard is happy for several reasons: 1: He likes Zona and Tula and is glad that they’re back. 2: Having them back after a months-long absence means that there’s going to be a big party with everybody invited. 3: He just likes the attention.

LN - Well, I never get tired of readin that, so thanks!

Peregrin - The guard is a big guy - yes, they do grow them, on average, over six feet - but he’s also ahead of her majesty by a few yards, so it’s also perspective.

And what could Ipola know about Mentl that’s not to like? :)

Adamzero - Yup. We’ll see how that works out for him.

    Jean - No, just perspective.

    Jim Farris - Quite.

Addup2 - You have it right. The white-haired lady on the left behind the queen is Karna, twenty-six years older than in the illos of “The King Is Dead.” She’s dressing a little more modestly, since she’s nearly seventy now. The older chap to screen right of the queen is Serrin, the high priest. You’ll meet him up close pretty soon.

Tricksterson - For Ipola’s age, it’s just lighting and the fact that you’re close enough now to get more detail. The model is identical. Zona is six foot, six inches tall. Ipola and Tula are around five-nine, so yeah she’s gonna tower. She’s gonna loom. She’s a tall drink o’watter.

Uhl - It’s the hair. I used the same wig.

Lora - That’s deceptive. The queen can still pull a good hunting bow consistently, though it has been awhile since she practiced with a warbow. She’s not nearly as fit as she was twenty years ago when she put shafts clean through urtts as often as she aimed at them.

Deris - She was, indeed, talking to the raven. And her ravens are smart for birds, though in Erogenia we don’t have them helping you with the laundry or making the vents in pie crusts. They also have a bird’s sense of things which has to be filtered. The biggest limit is that they have no sense of quantity compared to humans. Their idea of numbers is limited to “bird” (one) “Mate” (two) and “flock” (many) Given that, it’s still important to get first-hand intel from people.

Hope to have a print version by next ComicCon.

Sleepinin - Yeah, pretty cool. :) And the family resemblance is quite easy, actually. I start out with one basic model and then just work it with appropriate differences in the morphs. Different hair and makeup is also just a matter of changing textures.

  24. Lora
    November 4th, 2009 at 5:40 pm

Hmm, yes, I suppose so. It’s just that her muscles doesn’t seem that developed. :P But of course you can still have quite a bit of strength even without big muscles. (This is just something that struck me the first time I saw Ipola and then again now).

  25. Raoul
    November 4th, 2009 at 7:42 pm

Don’t think your momma don’t know
Don’t think your momma don’t know
Don’t think your momma don’t know what you’re going to do!
Or have done, in this case. I’m glad, since I think Mentl has enough to worry about without adding in Ipola’s approval—at least she looks like she approves. And the raven thing—shades of Odin?

  26. Ebony14
    November 4th, 2009 at 7:48 pm

If the Queen is the same height as Tula, Zona’s father must be ginormous! Which isn’t really surprising, but the three of them sitting next to each other certainly drives it home.

And, as for Ipola’s cleft, it’s a nice bit of detail, and makes her nice and unique. I like how the characters in this comic aren’t all smooth and flawless. It adds to the versimilitude (as much as a fantasy barbarian comic can have in the first place). And hey, the cleft chin worked fabulously for Kirk Douglas; why can’t it work for a woman as well?

Still loving this, JE. Keep it up.

I just finished going through the whole story again - wow! It really moves when you read it all at once. What a great story. I am enjoying this so much.

  28. Jean
    November 5th, 2009 at 12:03 am

JED…alas, no, she’s not. Bit of a hypochondriac / stress-puppy, actually. Lovely appearance, but beneath the skin is a bit of a fixer-upper, condition-wise.

  29. reddwarf
    November 5th, 2009 at 12:40 am

Well, she’s not scowling at Mentl like he just kicked some kittens, so that’s good, and saving both her daughters lives should go a long way with her. Still, a real “BUH?!” moment for Mentl. I’m extremely interested in what Serrin and Karna will have to say to Mentl - hopefully they can also begin to make some sense out of The Book for him.

  30. Fred
    November 5th, 2009 at 12:47 am

Damn. This comic has never been anything less than outstanding. I don’t know how you manage to keep the quality so high without even one off day, but however you do it, keep doing it!

  31. Ed
    November 5th, 2009 at 4:34 am

Ebony - think they said Zona’s dad was big even by their standards. But you can’t always judge - Michael Jordan has 2 brothers, both well under 6 feet

I think Mentl is mostly shocked by the intel gathering in a pre-technological society…. not so much WHAT she knows, as THAT she knows…

  32. JE Draft
    November 5th, 2009 at 11:27 am

    Lora - It’s just `cause she’s a little softer-looking than Tula. :)

Raoul - I picked a raven for practical reasons. It was a good-looking model that was less expensive. And naturally I thought about Odin, but Rhiannon also had sacred birds, and I’m sure she isn’t the only figure of legend or myth to do so.

Ebony14 - Zonn was a little over seven feet tall, which makes him a really big guy, even by Erogenian standards. Currently, there are only a few women in the Lion Tribe (all Zona’s close cousins, actually) Who come close to her height, and none as big or strong as she is.

MaryLynne - I appreciate it, thanks! That’s certainly how it’s written, and I have a pretty big story to tell. Glad you like it!

Jean - Ah, C’est la vie. On the other hand, I have a habit of falling for women that are crazier than I am, so it’s best she’s in another state. :)

reddwarf - Oh, the high priest and priestess will most definitely have an opinion, rest assured. Other affairs at the moment will take precedence, but you will see that in the next few pages.

Ed - Correct. He’s a bit gobsmacked at the moment. But it gets better, you’ll see.

  33. Anonymous

What happened to Mentl’s right nipple?

  34. Tricksterson
    November 5th, 2009 at 6:55 pm

Ravens are all over the place mythologically. Odin is the most famous but he’s also a Trickster god in the Pacific, northwest, the Raven humanoid tengu are trickster figures in japan and of course there’s Morrigan, Babd, Macha and Nemain in Celtic mythology.

  35. Someguy
    November 5th, 2009 at 7:45 pm

Heh, heh, I like the crazy ones to JE. They sure do make life interesting don’t they. ; )

  36. dalewake
    November 6th, 2009 at 12:07 am

You mean the shadow being cast on Mentl? Don’t forget “The Hobbit”, was very similar to a raven that talked with the lakeshoremen.

    Awesome series.

  37. Someguy
    November 6th, 2009 at 8:40 am

That was a thrush. The raven talked to the dwarves, or something like that I think.

  38. Uhl
    November 6th, 2009 at 8:55 am

The thrush spoke to the leader of the Humans and told him about the chink in SMAUG’s armor. Which he then pierced with an obsidian arrow. At least according to the 1970s “The Hobbit” movie. The thrush also understood Bilbo Baggins quite well.

The Three Beauties in Panel 2 are superb. I note that our “over-endowed” Queen Ipola’s boobies seem to shrink next to her giant daughter’s.

  40. Sarge
    March 28th, 2010 at 6:16 am

Make that Panel THREE. I wish this Comments thing had an ‘edit’ function.
