If I were to cast an actor as King Tor, it would have to be a younger John Rhys Davies. I can only hear his voice saying those lines.
September 11th, 2009 at 12:17 am
The faces are really good! Tor’s lips and eyes, the dirt on Tethyk’s cheek and the subtle beginnigs of a wattle under his chin. And the details on Tor’s axe & jewelry. You’ve gotten so good! In Panel 3 is that the archer babe behind him? This storyline has me hooked.
September 11th, 2009 at 12:31 am
Oh man, i can totally hear John saying those lines!!!
Notice how the old bull didn’t say that Tethik never beat him? he just never beat him easily.
September 11th, 2009 at 12:32 am
<..>
NIPPLES!
September 11th, 2009 at 12:32 am
well those wacky brackets… that’s not all I wanted to post at all. Ah well.
September 11th, 2009 at 12:42 am
So, the king himself was out for an afternoon ride, eh? That explains why Tethik ran into guards when he did-of course there’d be an advance guard looking ahead for trouble.
Can’t decipher that look on the king’s face in panel 7, though. He looks pissed, but apparently not enough to do anything nasty to Tethik…yet. Maybe he thought about it but changed his mind? Or is just wondering what the heck Tethik is doing there, or can forsee that whatever the reason he is there is going to mean fuss and bother for his kingdom.
September 11th, 2009 at 1:45 am
I think after the pleasantries are over, da king is now thinking, “oh crap, what is he doing here like this now? Gah what am I in for this time?”
And that sequence is so classic, especially where I’m from.
September 11th, 2009 at 2:48 am
I love Tethik’s wry expression in the last panel.
September 11th, 2009 at 2:59 am
Thats one cold look from the king.
Cant wait to se whats upp next.
September 11th, 2009 at 3:22 am
Sooo.. King Tor is a closet-gay?
September 11th, 2009 at 4:01 am
Tethik you be in the doghouse NOW. or would it be Bullpen?
Also, BIG FRIGGIN HORSE!
Still King Tor’s all GRRRRR
Aldarad, It’s be discussed to death but Erogianians don’t have the same sexual taboos and perceptions we do, so if Tor had Homosexual desires, he’d just have them, wouldn’t be a need for a closet.
PLUS, If Tor and Tethik had a ‘lover’s quarrel’ that could explain the. GRRR face.
September 11th, 2009 at 6:11 am
As for the cold look, my guess is that Tethik did NOT make it here before the rumors of killing an Erogianian. Before facts maybe, but not rumors. Therefore, King Tor has been having to deal with rumors that an old friend may have done something that sounds REALLY out of character for him… Then said old friend just showed up on his doorstep. Making it HIS problem to separate rumor from fact. I would GRRRR too.
September 11th, 2009 at 6:50 am
Have to laugh because as soon as I read King Tor’s first line I heard John Rhys Davies voice in my head. And he could still do the voice if thr movie was animated.
Tor may have heard rumors but even if he hasn’t he’s got to know that Tethik showing up on his border unnanounced, alone and not by a standard route cannot possibly be good news.
September 11th, 2009 at 9:27 am
I must say, the King is pretty canny — I can see why Tethik came here, even with some past issues between them. The King seems to be thinking “Hmmm, he’s here alone, unofficially, in spite of our history — must be damn important then, and is likely something that needs to be handled very quietly. I very much doubt it’s good news. Crap.”
September 11th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Capt Marsupial - Thanks, as far as my own work goes, but I can’t take credit for another’s character design. King Tor is Michael 2 with Arduino’s “Wolfgang” morphs and textures. Arduino is, as such things go in the world of Poser, an established and popular artist who sells through Renderosity. Wolfgang is one of his designs that he has redone for every male DAZ model. As soon as I saw it, I said “*that’s* my Bull King.” I will take credit for his costume and jewelry design, which I cobbled together from bits and pieces or else modelled a bit myself directly in Poser from primitives. Came out nice, I think.
sentientcheese - Caught that, did you? Yes, Tethik and Tor have a history, and have in their youth, at times, had to physically whale on each other. Look at page 243 for the first hint of it.
Adamzero - Yeah, well, Tor’s a big guy. And Erogenian war horses tend to be Economy Sized to begin with - especially compared to Dusk, Tethik’s sturdy little saddle horse.
Wolf - just a little hint: That cold look has as much to do with the last conversation that the two men had as to the present situation.
Tricksterson - oh, yes. All that and more.
reddwarf - Tor has never been considered an intellectual, but in his own sphere he’s definitely got what we call “seykhl.”
Sage - It must be the brisk mountain air, I suppose.
Macnut - Time will tell, but for the moment we leave Tethik to put his shirt back on and ride after the king to his stronghold.
Kamatu - Really? And where are you from, exactly?
Moox - you can see that? I was afraid his face was at the wrong angle ..
Gremalkin - Afraid you’ll have to wait a bit, but neat to know you’re interested.
Aldarad - As Adamzero pointed up, he need not be closetted, here. And it has not been established how Tor hangs his hammer …
September 11th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Finally someone with a little hair on him (panel 2) I was beginning to think that the Erogianian people as a whole practiced full body waxing…
September 11th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
King Tor looks like some old movie star…but I can’t put my finger on who.
September 11th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
I could more easily see Brian Blessed as the Bull Tribe king.
September 11th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Whooo . . . there is definitely some history there. Some definite violence too.
Mmmm, hairy men. :3
September 11th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
“John Rhys Davies”. yes I could “hear that”. I’ll give away my age and say that I became a fan of his for his portrayal of “Paladin” in the Wing Commander Games.
September 12th, 2009 at 4:04 am
Did the brisk mountain air cause my brackets to stick out funny too? o.o
September 12th, 2009 at 8:10 am
Soulgazer; That’s okay, I’m even older. I remember him as Sallah from the first Indiana Jones Movie.
September 12th, 2009 at 10:02 am
Is Sallah the guy that said, “when you insult a Turk, make sure he’s DEAD!”?
September 12th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
I don’t remember that line but he’s the one who said “Asps. Very dangerous. You go first”
September 12th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Brian Blessed! Oh, gods, yes, he’d also be perfect! And it is interesting to note that both he and John Rhys-Davies were in the landmark series “I, Claudius,” though not in the same episodes. Blessed was, of course, Augustus and later in the series it was a quite young Rhys-Davies whose character Macro was responsible for Patrick Stewart’s Sejanus’ downfall.
September 12th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
Yes there appears to be some old lovers quarrel here, probably hurt feelings from the mix between state business and personal emotions. Tor probably remembers a time when business came first and now he’s having to wonder if it still does…
September 13th, 2009 at 7:30 am
I don’t know who John Rhys-Davies is…maybe if I saw him, I would recognize him.
I was thinking maybe a cross between Marlon Brando and Charles Laughton.
September 13th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0722636/bio
This’d be John Rhys Davies… More known lately as Gimli.

September 14th, 2009 at 9:41 am
OH! THAT guy!
September 14th, 2009 at 11:25 am
Must look up this “I, Cladius” *runs off to netflix*
September 15th, 2009 at 8:12 am
Hmm, wonder if Tor is really still pissed at Tethik and whether they’ll work out their last dispute first, before Tethik brings up the reason he’s there.
As for John Rhys-Davies, I don’t think I heard a particular voice in my head when reading, but perhaps I should listen to him speak and then read some Zona after talking to him.
Hope he’s a nice guy.
September 15th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Adam Zero: Yes! Go find “I Claudius” on Netflix or DVD now! You won’t regret it. Besides John Rhys Davies and Brian Blessed it also has John Hurt. Damn, I can’t remember the name of the guy who plays Claudius but he’s wonderful too.
September 15th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Tricksterson
Derek Jacobi, who also plays the Benedictine monk / detective Cadfael in that series, and moany other parts here and yon. though the only one offhand I can call to mind was in the second Underworld …
September 15th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
Thank You Fatuncle!
September 15th, 2009 at 11:58 pm
Oh yes, i was thinking a very subdued brian blessed. although, you run afoul of the Brian Blessed Substitution Rule, which is that all of his lines can be replaced by the phrase “DID SOMEONE ORDER AN ENORMOUS HAM???” without changing the spirit of the scene.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:31 am
Hey! I remember JRD as Sallah and I’m only 25! Favourite line being the ‘you were named after the dog?!’ - he manages to have a good laugh at Indy’s expense and still doesn’t sound insulting. Man, that was a good movie…
September 16th, 2009 at 11:38 pm
If these last few comic show how awesome and able Tethik is now, I REALLY want to see him in his prime. I hope we get some flashbacks, or at least an image.
September 17th, 2009 at 3:33 am
@Fatuncle A Cadfael-series? I am off to the store!
And if it isnt sex… politics, lost frenship… something is going unspoken here!!
September 17th, 2009 at 8:42 am
The king seems to have bit of a lazy eye.
September 17th, 2009 at 9:18 am
Drama!!! Though Tethik is smooth enough to cover just about anything I think. It’s sad… I just realized I’ve re-read the archives… again… and can’t even tell you how many times I’ve done so!
Lora, while you’re thinking about voices, put Jeremy Irons voice in for Count Tethik as well…
September 17th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
Balkin - Maybe Jeremy Irons…but I like Alan Rickman’s voice better.
JRD is the perfect voice for the King.
I love this comic…besides the stunning artwork, the character development is the best!
September 17th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
I was thinking a younger Leonard Nimoy but Jeremy Irons or alan Rickman would work too.
September 18th, 2009 at 12:29 am
I also was unaware Cadfael had been made into film… I shall have to look this up.
September 18th, 2009 at 8:16 am
Not film, PBS miniseries.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
DAMN! I keep forget JE’s taking a holiday! *grumbles* Enjoy JE =)
September 18th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
Cadfael is on DVD; I watched the whole series courtesy of Netflix. You will be pleased to learn that for once, a TV series based upon books stayed very true to the books.
September 18th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
Haranek, yeah, I know - I’m showing signs of withdrawal symptoms.
September 19th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
<3 the Cafael movies, and enjoyed the two books I’ve found. (Oddly enough, the movies are easier to find than the books, which isn’t usually the case for stuff like this…
September 19th, 2009 at 11:05 pm

September 27th, 2009 at 5:21 am
