    One for the count!

Tethik, bound by no man ‘against his will’ ….

Me thinks our lord will be laying down some badass right up and here.

  3. Elfguy
    August 25th, 2009 at 12:43 am

Guess that means he occasionally WANTS to be bound?

I knew I liked him… and what a diplomat; he knows the Erogenian customs very well!

*snerk* “Prepare to be bound!” Hehehehe. Hmm, I notice he makes no mention of the woman in the group binding him against his will. :P

  6. Ken
    August 25th, 2009 at 2:09 am

What’s up with the woman in the first and third panel? This is supposed to be Bull land and the FAQ says the Bull tribe doesn’t let woman become warriors. Are they really border guards, or something else entirely? Mayhaps the plot thickens?

What’s with all the bondage talk? I mean, yeah, what do I expect, right, but seriously…
JE, I thought this page was extremely well written. I felt like I knew the Bull captain down to his very core from just a few lines (though I’m not naive enough to presume that feeling to be accurate), and that I’m seeing a whole new side of Tethik that was never revealed before.
Wonderful page, I really can’t wait to see what happens next!

  8. Wolfhardt
    August 25th, 2009 at 3:51 am

I see another cha balancing coming ^^

The bull captain will insist on binding our dear Count and Tethik will show him the error of his ways^^

And for the bondage talk … well, I think Tethik is the type who is open for all kinds of … ummm … physical pleasure ;) and his wording is very implicating

  9. Gremalkin
    August 25th, 2009 at 3:53 am

He is a man of principle, me like !

  10. Jason
    August 25th, 2009 at 6:09 am

    …Snrk.
After the bondage talk I’m just going to smirk.

Anyway, I can see this going one of two ways- Tethik gaining the respect he deserves by his refusal to be (a-hem) bound, or the Bull captain being most displeased and things going less… favourably for Tethik.
Although what I EXPECT to happen is JE to pull something entirely unexpected and/or interesting because he’s LIKE THAT.

  11. Lora
    August 25th, 2009 at 6:23 am

Lots of sky in todays page and Tethik is being quite diplomatic. ;)

  12. Sockpuppet
    August 25th, 2009 at 6:48 am

HAHAHA! AdamZero and I had the same exact thought!

  13. Balkin
    August 25th, 2009 at 7:18 am

Tethik may be older, but that just means he knows more tricks. :p

I do believe a Bull Tribe Captain is about to get a lesson in manners. And I STILL hear Jeremy Irons voice in my head whenever Tethik speaks. :)

  14. Someguy
    August 25th, 2009 at 7:39 am

Hmm I think the captain may be a tad new to post yes? A little too eager to prove himself? Love the way this is going and the insights to Tethik’s personality. In the character page it says he secretly longs for the old days of chivalry and honor in Kivalia. We see it a bit with this page and I suspect we are going to see more! I’m looking forward to it. :)

  15. Demas
    August 25th, 2009 at 8:00 am

Now there’s a line drawn in the sand alright.. Tethik’s speech is very concise. Just in his first sentence he states he’s trusted enough to deliver sensitive information, wise enough to offer insight, and acknowledges King Tor as a friend and ally of Kivalia. Which therefore implies that he is a friend and ally of Erogenia, and should therefore be treated with respect. His last line does offer some wiggle room in the whole predicament as well. As others have pointed out he refuses to be “bound against his will”, which implies that if they can convince him it’s the only thing approaching a mutually honorable solution he is willing to cut them some slack. Brilliant page JED, can’t wait for the update already :-)

  16. Lachesis
    August 25th, 2009 at 8:30 am

I’m probably way off base here, but the idea of the bull tribe not allowing women warriors sparked a memory about some historical earth cultures. In some cultures, historically, a woman could assume a man’s societal role, if she gave up all “womanly” things. She had to act and behave as a man, and for all intents and purposes, she was seen and treated as if she were a man. Depending on the culture, she could even take another woman as “wife”. Now, I haven’t read as much as others about the Bull Tribe, but I wonder whether or not they might have developed such a cultural loophole?

  17. Sleepinin
    August 25th, 2009 at 8:32 am

It’s my opinion that Tethik is meant to represent Kilvalia as it should be, old-school knights and honor and all that kind of stuff. Which basically means that anyone who tries to truss him up against the laws of hospitality is going to end up with a really big sword-related problem.

And I doubt Tethik made all the way to Erogenia without running into several Urtts/giants/bandit-types. The dude’s probably got lots of chops in the fighting department ^_^

  18. JE Draft
    August 25th, 2009 at 8:57 am

Hey, kids! Another little beat in the story today. :)

As far as the “bondage” thing, I seriously have never been into that stuff, and so I, myself, gave it no thought as I was writing it. As a cute little double entendre, I can see it, sure. Have fun. :)

I need to update the Bull Tribe FAQ. I did explain this in the comments on last page but let me elaborate a bit. In the past, warriors in the Bull Tribe could be men or women so long as they could do the job. But the Bull territory is bordered right on the Urtt territiries across the river and they suffered terribly during the last war, and in the years leading up to it. King Tor is basically a good man, but a little on the thick side sometimes and he saw what was happening to his women as especially intolerable and forbade them from directly participating in war any more. This was his attempt to protect them from the fate of those captured by the Urtts, which we need not elaborate on here. Naturally it was only partially effective and pretty silly on one level, but he was adamant for many years. Women were still allowed to hunt and naturally were taught, as all Erogenians are, how to fight and defend themselves. Six years ago, Zona beat his champion Alrix right in front of him and won his respect. It also chipped away at his certainty a bit, and so now exceptional women can be full-on warriors. Yiraena the archer is one such.

    August 25th, 2009 at 9:23 am

Uhm, I hope not all Bulls are such assholes. “Prepare to be bound”? I mean he’s ONE guy who has announced peaceful intentions. MAYBE you take his sword away. But binding him? That’s like declaring he is a criminal. Come on JED, I expect better of the Erogians than that sort of shit.

  20. JE Draft
    August 25th, 2009 at 9:41 am

Hugh - Well, I will only say that Donnil is like a lot of Erogenians who have the opinion - not completely unjustly - that all Kivalians are liars. He would never treat a fellow Erogenian like that. Just one of the wonderful little side-effects of having two very different cultures sharing the same landscape and having a history of alternately hating each others’ guts and occasionally interbreeding.

  21. Ga'Tor
    August 25th, 2009 at 9:58 am

I LIKE this Count and, in general, I don’t ususally like gay guys. :) While our three main heroes all have thier winning attributes, I could argue that Tethik is the most interesting character in JEDs world. “Yiraena” ey? That looks to be a bodkin point she’s got aimed at the good count and it would go through that chainmail I see like a knife though butter.
The leader of that patrol is certainly living up to the term “bull headed”.

It seems that relations between Eroghen and Kivaila have taken a turn for the worse, in both senses of the word.

    August 25th, 2009 at 10:42 am

Methinks this would be a good time for Zona, Mentl, and Tula to show up. Since JED teased us with the last pairing but didn’t deliver, I suspect that could happen here, too.

    August 25th, 2009 at 11:12 am

Why do all Erogenians have to act like such arrogant dickheads?

Come to think of it, pretty much everyone but Mentl has been guilty of that at some point. So what’s with all the ass-hat behavior?

  25. The Macnut
    August 25th, 2009 at 11:46 am

They’re barbarian warriors. Being an ass-hat at some point is part of the description.

Of course, the more “civilized” Kivalians tend to practice a different kind of ass-hattery….

  26. Jean
    August 25th, 2009 at 3:19 pm

Personally, I’m voting that Tethik’s last statement there is actually a ritual statement straight out of the Erogenian handbook. After all, if Tethik’s been among the Erogenians long enough to be friends with the King of the Bull Tribe, he’s been among them long enough to pick up on their social habits…and this definitely sounds like something an Erogenian would say.

  27. Jean
    August 25th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

Possum: Mentle got in a bit of that attitude himself in his confrontation with Pontagar. (It really wasn’t necessary to call Ponty a “dick” appended to his statements about not being a boy.) But I’ll admit in Mentl’s case, he was provoked by Ponty.

In this case, the Bull Tribe could be thinking their reasoning is provoked. They believe Kivalians to be liars by nature…and this guy refused to tell them his name straight away–aka almost lied–and is therefure not direct, honest, straightforward, and other things Erogenian.

And I still think Tethik’s reply is very, very Erogenian, and these border troops are about to get a taste of humility in assuming he’s a nobody know-nothing honorless Kivalian.

    Tethik! Tethik! He’s our dude,

Tethik and the Queen Yanora both know Eregonia and Eregonians, particularly through Queen Ipola. Meanwhile, what is the shock on the Count? I don’t know about King Gudik, but Maldik would be toast without him, as I think Maldik will find out.

The dialogue reads like a slightly stilted but “correct” tone in an honor and shame society.

Oh, and on all the bondage jokes, why not some of the others? After all our darling little Urrt loving prince has a cute name. Mal = Bad, Maldik….

Oh, don’t chase it too far, since it doesn’t have to be sounds. Remember that the dik-dik is a tiny little antelope known for its small size and jumping ability. So it just might mean “bad little leaper” and refer to the silly choices Maldik is making.

Oh heck, here you guys go, a bondage tie-in joke on panels 4 and 5.

  31. Hugh
    August 25th, 2009 at 8:40 pm

I would not be surprised if you were right about the ritual statement thing, Jean. But taking a foreigner prisoner just because he comes on your lands is still WAY overkill in my opinion, especially if he is a noble of country that your country has an alliance with (obviously, as we saw with Pontigar, not all Erogians are all that committed to the alliance). These guys apparently don’t put much stock in trade relations, and I really want to think that they are smarter than that.

And I made the Maldik = Bad Dick, Gudik = Good Dick “connection” months ago. I asked JED about it in an email or forum post, and I think he said he had not intentionally named them with that in mind.

JED, great page and thanks for the explaination of the “Torc” . I was a tad bit disapointed that they held only the adult title and the rest was personnel choice, but thats still kind of kewl. Good way to tell the jail bait from the legals..LOL

I’m actually kind of hoping we get to see Tethik show some swordplay, Kilvalian-style. I mean, most of the combat we’ve seen has been barbariany-type hack and slash fighting, mostly by Zona, with lots of magick tossed around by Tula and Mentl. However, a nobleman like Tethik probably has years of training in fencing and swordsmanship under his belt, not to mention fighting in wars and skirmishes.

It’ll be interesting to see how a Kilvalian warrior fights as opposed to a barbarian. Comments, anyone?

  34. Teri

Tethil is awesome, as always, but that Bull Captain is one gorgeous hunk. I could stare at him all day (with a goofy smile on my face).

  35. Tricksterson
    August 26th, 2009 at 5:16 am

Actually I can see the Captain’s point. WE know Tethik is trustworthy but as he pointed out, He doesn’t know him from Adam. His job is to protect the border and Tethik is coming across, not on a standard road but across the plains. And yes, I’m pretty sure that Tethik’s last statement was part of a challenge ritual. IIRCsomewhere along the line wasn’t it stated that Tethik was one of the best swordsmen in Kivallia?

My kid brother used to say:
“It is better to be polite to all people, even the real flamers. Because under all of their limp wristed sillyness, clean and stylish clothes, and tendency to lisp, there is a man. And if you provoke him, that man might just come out and kick your ass.”

  39. Tricksterson
    August 26th, 2009 at 3:39 pm

Except I wouldn’t define Tethik as a “flamer”, unless you define “flamboyantly gay” as being “cultured and intelligent”. Other than that he comes off as quite straight except that he prefers sex with other men.

  40. offsides
    August 26th, 2009 at 8:04 pm

I just realized what Tethik said was “I will fight the man who tries to bind me against my will.” Specifically, not _any_ man, but _the_ man. He just challenged Donnil(?) to a fight, which I would assume is equivalent to an honor duel, and thus either way the matter will be settled as long as both sides fight honorably. And I suspect that Tethik is a much better combattant than any of this group of Erogenians expect. He may lose the battle, but it’s not a foregone conclusion in either direction, and even if the border patrol is full of jerks, unless they’re already “compromised” I doubt they’d reneg on the results of an honorable combat.

    But we’ll see…

  41. Fatuncle

I just checked yesterday’s strip. Tethik is still pronouncing “committee” with only one M.

For that, he deserves whatever kicking around he gets. The cad!

Wait, wait…he may have redeemable qualities…or maybe he’s trainable. Sometimes all it takes is for a lady of good breeding to take a gentleman-to-be in hand and “train him up right” as they put it so poetically in the South…

  46. Jim Farris
    August 27th, 2009 at 7:04 am

    Hmmm…

We’ve only had a glimpse of Tethik’s abilities in a fight, but what we’ve seen so far is that he’s capable of easily overcoming a younger and stronger man who has the drop on him. I have a feeling our bull-tribe pretty-boy is in for a surprise.

  47. Fatuncle
    August 27th, 2009 at 8:13 am

    Jean

ROTFL - Yeah, the second M has appeared. We are being watched!

Tethik calls to mind an Elizabethan courtier, whose name I can’t recall (I have been beating my head against the wall trying to jog the memory loose for two days now) - an elegant man, bit of a fop, and a renowned duelist, with several dead men to his credit. It was said of him that courtesy was the leash by which his honor restrained him.

Someguy said, “Gasp! You mean he’s even better than Yatta-ta!? XD”

NO one is better than Yatta-tal. We have this on no less an authority than Yatta-tal. Who will explain this at length. Repeatedly. On the rare occasions he’s conscious. Or not trying to climb out of a gorge, or get out of a suit of armor without the use of a can opener, or –

I am reminded of a fable I heard once about Luigi, a simple fisherman who was building his boat. As he was sawing the timber, along came his neighbor and said, “Luigi! You can’t make your boat out of plywood! There’s some oak you should get, my cousin sells, much better!” So Luigi goes and buys the oak and begins to saw again.

Along comes another neighbor and says, “Luigi! Is this a fishing boat? You can’t make it so narrow! You have to make it wide in the beam so you can stand as you pull in your nets!” So, Luigi starts all over again and makes it wide in the beam.

Then along comes another neighbor as Luigi’s painting the boat a nice color of green. “Luigi!” Says this neighbor, “How come you paint the boat green? Who ever heard of a green boat in this village?! She’s got to be blue! All the boats we make here are blue!” So, Luigi buys some blue paint and he dutifully paints the boat blue.

When it is all finished and dry, Luigi takes the boat and ties a rope to the bow and hauls it up and hangs it from the workshop rafters. Then he gets some plywood, and begins to make another boat. His neighbors all come around to complain that he’s doing it all wrong again, and he says:

“This is MY boat. YOUR boat is up THERE.” :)

    August 27th, 2009 at 6:15 pm

So we should stop telling you what to do and let you do your job? Fair enough.
    But’s that’s never gonna happen so…
I’m guessing that Tethik will give a good accounting of himself. I don’t think it will be a walkover the way some people do because CaptainGuy would have gotten his rank in a warrior culture like the Erogenians if he didn’t have some serious fighting chops. But I’m guessing he’s fallen prey to the “soft Southerner” stereotype of Kivallians so I think he will be surprised.
I also noticed that Tethink said he would fight. He didn’t say “I will fight to the death” so I’m guessing the fight will go until one of them is disarmed or first blood. Possibly just until the Captain is impressed enough.
