Traps really depend on the party. I had a party that just hack and slashed thru everything, So i sent them to recover an artifacte. In the underground layer on lvl 2 was a picturesque area with a pond and simulated sun; two lvl's down, straight down, they come to a narrow stone bridge over a pit of lava with a door at the end. Can you quess where the door went and what the party did do?

Oh, did I mention the Scales of Justice is a TIMED trap? As in, I'll warn them it's timed, explain what is happening...and hit "start" on a stopwatch? They'll have exactly 12 seconds to figure out what to do, before they go SPLORCH! This is what I mean by a lethal trap.

...The timed thing is deliberate, btw. Several of the lethal traps are timed, and they'll just have to shout out what they're going to do, random order reaction checks and all.

You see, I've gamed with this group of players now for about 2 years, and they have a bad habit of dissecting everything in roundtable discussion. Particularly one player, who LOVES to argue the rules. Except he's *bending* the rules, and rules-lawyering like a con artist...and I've had enough of him slowing down the game and stalling the action.

Which will make Wednesday's game interesting, since they're finally high enough up the Tower, I can start throwing in lethal and other timed traps. They WILL learn to think on their feet and not debate everything to death!

...Or they WILL debate themselves to death.

Ahhh, but they haven't encountered the LETHAL traps, yet. One of which "says", "Leave now or die!" ...but in reality the warning sign was deliberately altered; it originally said "Leave now AND die!" with a DC of 35 to notice the alteration, since it was altered by a forgery spell. Another one, 6 huge gems adorn pedestals, each worth tens of thousands of gold. A very complex riddle awaits the adventurers. If they touch the wrong gem...they take so much damage, most of them will die, unless I roll really, really low...or am feeling nice. They've already failed 1 of the riddles, but it was on a lesser dungeon level, so I "cheated" on how much damage they took.

Then there's the Scales of Justice...the part drops down a chute and gets divided, odd numbers to the left, even numbers to the right...and if their WEIGHT--yes, encoumbrance does count--is not balanced...one side of the grate-style scales they land on slides up towards spikes in the ceiling, the other slides towards spikes on the floor, picking up speed as they go. There's a stable platform they could jump to...with statues of gargoyles on it which will activate once they land...and if they don't all jump together, the scales will simply tip that much faster toward the spikes awaiting either side...

100+ traps, riddles, puzzles, and methods of nasty slaughter. (I added the pac-man maze the other night on a whim.) The amusing place is, they disliked one corridor so much that when they encountered another one exactly like it, they decided to avoid it...without realizing that if they traverse X number of those corridors safely, they get to a big prize.

Oh, and my favorite, the Physics Trap. Here's the riddle: A man puts a very heavy lead brick in the bottom of his boat and rows out to the middle of a lake. He tosses the brick overboard. Does the level of the water in the lake go up or down? ...A LOT of people get this one wrong, muahahahahahah!

Huh. And here the husband's barbarian/dragon disciple has died...what is it...three times? Four? I've told him he's the Daniel Jackson of d&d - one free resurrect per scenario etc. The priests at my temple(ie the temple that likes us and is intact...wait...sorry...not anymore, oops) are starting to give us discounts for true resurrection - ie the DM should stop leaving 'how many high level Demons/Undead/Werewolves/Vampires are going to show up' to the dice roll.

Can I pick your collective(Jean, Sleepinin, whoever else does the DMing thing) brains at some point? You can follow the link in my name(I think it's working) to my pathetically bare livejournal(I was sick of commenting anonymously on people's cool creative stuff) and say hi.

Wow, look at all teh responses we're seeing...

And Jean, if you think your DMing is cruel and unusual, you ain't seen my style of DM. Last time I took control, it was an adventure in the Demonweb Pits. Of twelve heroes, one guy walked out dragging all of the loot, his comrades bodies, and the corpse of the Queen of the Demonweb Pits.

And he only cause he got lucky on the one last dice roll ^_^
