First comment, and AWESOME! They’re just all “Yep, pretty good show.”

    Where’s the popcorn?

  2. Metroknight
    July 31st, 2009 at 1:33 am

Great story and the artwork is incredible but in panel one, there is a slight mistake. The saddle cuts through the person’s leg unlike in panel 2.

    Keep up the great work.

    Pass the popcorn please.

Marvelous page. I love the completely relaxed and unflapped attitude of the twins. They don’t even seem surprised. *snicker*

    “er… Well… I think you lost your shirt, ma’am.”

No, it’s still there, the tie is running across her back at her lower ribs…but yeah, it does look that way.

…Can I take the twins home with me? Just for the weekend? It’s no longer so *censored* frikkin (temperature) hot in the Seattle area, and I can finally appreciate how (sexy) hawt they are again…

  6. Moox
    July 31st, 2009 at 2:06 am

JE, you cheater. Not that I’m complaining–we just had a long, awesome battle sequence. It’s better this way, really.
Also, I instantly like the twins. I hope they get some story time. The appellation of respect, combined with their flat calm makes them awesome!

Sorry for the double post, but I just had to say…
For some reason, this comic made me want to read through all the archives again.

  8. Addup2
    July 31st, 2009 at 2:21 am

Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but I get the impression that the twins have seen this before. I’m wondering who else has beaten up Pontagar after he’s mouthed off.

  9. The MacNut
    July 31st, 2009 at 2:43 am

The twins already understand what we the audience are just learning, namely that Erogenian conflict resolution is SO much fun to watch.

And I’m guessing that ol’ Ponty’s now out cold. Darn, guess this won’t continue until next Tuesday after all….but either Zona held back A LOT during that little tussle, or Ponty’s MUCH tougher than we give him credit for, since it took a literal pounding to put him out of the fight.

  10. Wolfhardt
    July 31st, 2009 at 3:01 am

Wish I were with the twins, sharing a beer and pretzels^^

Only thing I miss is the sight off the aftermath, but maybe we only have to wait…

  11. AdamZero
    July 31st, 2009 at 3:56 am

Twins are smart, they’ve travel with the fire prince long enough to know he’s just outcold. That and there’s no glory to be had getting in the Champion’s way.

  12. Kunama
    July 31st, 2009 at 4:39 am

rofl. I love the way they just look on, as if their companion is always saying stupid things and getting beat up for it. Even the horses are all ‘yep, same old, same old.’

  13. wysiwyg
    July 31st, 2009 at 4:42 am

The twins have been traveling with Pontagar for a while now so they’re probably glad to finally see someone beat the snot out of him.

  14. Shadowwarrior
    July 31st, 2009 at 6:24 am

I just love the twins here. as Moox said, they are so calm about it. Makes it soooo much better.

  15. Fatuncle
    July 31st, 2009 at 7:04 am

The thing that strikes me as being so funny is the reaction of the horse in the background - basically, he ignores the fuss.

  16. Black Ethel
    July 31st, 2009 at 7:05 am

Smart men…know enough to keep quiet.

  17. Hugh
    July 31st, 2009 at 7:53 am

I think they are minders. They would protect Pontegar from a real threat, but they know Zona is just going to rough him up a bit.

  18. hans
    July 31st, 2009 at 7:56 am

OMG! NOW I know who Erogenians remind me of.

Add some Guinness and you have the Irish!

    :D

  19. Jason
    July 31st, 2009 at 8:06 am

Haha! Hans, your Irish comment made me chuckle.

I really wanted the boys to compliment her on her skills. “Why yes Princess, that was a very nice uppercut just there…”
Or, you know, something written by JE, because that would be far more win than anything I think of.

Love Zona’s hair in the bottom panel. And I do prefer it this way, actually keep the story moving along a bit. The fight scenes are good, don’t get me wrong- but so’s the story.

  20. Verdi
    July 31st, 2009 at 8:28 am

I do wonder what ’suvremana’ means?

  21. Lora
    July 31st, 2009 at 8:32 am

LOL! haha, Lighting Zona. Great. ;D

And the way the twins are just looking on as if it’s the evening entertainment; omg it’s so win, win, win!. :D Erogenians have a very sensible way of solving problems. ;)

So Zona will probably drop back down beside the campfire and the twins will join her, Tula and Mentl for dinner.

  22. Addup2
    July 31st, 2009 at 9:31 am

Verdi - I think suvremana is roughly translated as princess

  23. Fatuncle
    July 31st, 2009 at 10:15 am

Did you catch that “Whiff!!”? Someone threw a punch, and missed - and I don’t think it was Zona.

Can’t wait to see Mentl’s reaction to this.

  24. Ga'Tor
    July 31st, 2009 at 10:19 am

Heheh, what a great start to the morning. Obviously Mentl is not the only one capable of providing a bit of evenings entertainment on a campout. Additional insight to Erogenian customs, mores and etiquette here. Also, what better way to settle who’s camp boss and party leader from the get-go?

As big and buff as Pontagar is, I don’t see him losing too many fights (he also cheats), which just adds to his bully persona. I doubt he’s had his ass handed to him by many other than Zona. All things considered I can’t really see him being a coward either which removes him from the ranks of the typical bully and places in the tyrant category, he is a prince after all. Jeez, who’d want to see this guy as king?

  25. Captain Marsupial
    July 31st, 2009 at 10:23 am

I wish there was sound. I’d love to hear the trumpet go wah- wahhh after all the pummelling. And, JED, thtnks for the great view in Panel 2.

  26. Hugh
    July 31st, 2009 at 10:24 am

Verdi - in the comments a couple pages back, JED said that Suvremana means Princess and Suvremani is the plural form so that the twins were addressing both Princesses.

And yes, I am looking forward to some fireside chatter between our heroes and the twins while Pontegar sleeps off his pounding.

  27. JE Draft
    July 31st, 2009 at 11:06 am

Ghost - Thanks! Yeah, the more I write Carshik and Brantik, the more they show me, the more fun they seem to be.

Metroknight. Thank you, and –AAAAAGH! That’s what happens when Photoshop crashes on you, taking some of your last changes with it. It gets fixed tonight.

The Old Hack - Thanks! And no, they’re not especially surprised. They’re loyal to their prince, but this is Zona, daughter of Zonn, and they know what happens on the recieving end of her dukes.

Sage - See Jean’s comment below. Zona’s attire - such as it is - is protected by Draft’s Level 10 Spell of Minimal Modesty, and so cannot completely come off, even in combat. ;)

Jean - If you can figure out how to transport them to our prime material plane, be my guest. Glad things have cooled down up there. Holy Joe!

Moox - Hey, anything that keeps you interested is a win for me. :)

Addup2 - Pontagar is very strong and a true badass, even for an Erogenian. Not even the king’s son gets to be champion of a tribe as warlike as the Fire Tribe if he can’t walk the walk.

MacNut - As I said, Pontagar’s that tough.

Wolfhardt - One aftermath, coming up on Tuesday. :)

Kunama - Pretty much, though Carshik actually did stop what he was doing to watch. They live up north of the Moon Tribe and don’t get to watch Zona in action very often.

wysiwyg - Glad? No. They actually like him, though they’re fully aware of his faults, and don’t have a problem seeing him get an accountability moment from the baddest in the valley.

Shadowwarrior - “Boy, boy - crazy boy. Be cool, boy!” :)

Fatuncle - They’re trained war horses. They are *not* the nervous type.

Black Ethel - “I say little; but when time shall serve, there shall be smiles.” - Henry V ;)

Hugh - Oh, absolutely the twins would assist against any real threat. As would Zona or any Erogenian. Being a butthead doesn’t make you an enemy. If it did, then life would be more full of enemies than friends! :)

hans - Faith and begorrah, he’s one of the group! =D

Jason - That wouldn’t necessarily be appropriate for them to comment on how well their friend and prince got his hash settled. Especially just in case Pontagar isn’t completely out …

Verdi - as some have mentioned, it is an ancient Erogenian word - a holdover in modern speech. And it means “princess.”

    FYI:
“Suvremor” = Lord, King, High Master
    “Suvremoro” = Prince, High Captain
    “Suvremori” = plural of above
“Suvrema” = Queen, High Lady, Noble Lady
    “Suvremana”= Princess, Lady
    “Suvremani”=Plural of above.

So, if Zona and her daughters were to be addressed together, it would be “Suvremani.” If Arrogand and Pontagar were to be addressed together it would be “Suvremori,” and if there is a mix of gender, you default to the masculine “Suvremori.” No, there is no gender-neutral.

Lora - Thanks! As I said, Tuesday’s update will show the fallout.

Fatuncle - No - Zona did not miss with any of her punches. :)

Captain Marsupial - LOL! And, you’re welcome.

Hugh - You are correct (see above) and So am I. :)

  28. The Old Hack
    July 31st, 2009 at 11:49 am

JE, you meant *Ipona* and her daughters, right? Oh, and yes, I can see otherwise loyal retainers take it easy when their lord gets the short end of the stick in this kind of fight. In Erogenia, this sort of punch-up is the equivalent of arm wrestling. Oh, um, and Ga’Tor — where did you get the ‘cheating’ bit from?

  29. Mishlady
    July 31st, 2009 at 12:01 pm

I love this! I agree that you just add some Guiness and you’ve got the Irish! (And maybe the Scots, too.) I agree that the horses are warhorses, considering the people they work for. Also, if Mr. Big Mouth gets pounded all the time, they view it as normal, especially since they are trained to stomp on any Ergonians (big big people) running at them screaming like Zona was. Besides, even though the twins are loyal, I’ll bet working for their prince can get annoying. I mean, granted, they may think as he does, but most people know when to shut up or just generally keep their mouths shut about something. So this has to be rather amusing for them.

  30. Sleepinin
    July 31st, 2009 at 12:18 pm

Pain 101, class in session ^_^

Anyway, those two do seem to have an aura of unflappability around them. Perhaps that’s the reason Pontagar keeps them around, so he can shoot off his mouth without getting interrupted.

  31. Elfguy
    July 31st, 2009 at 1:05 pm

I think their attitude is a case of “OK…he asked for this…he has it coming…”

  32. Tricksterson
    July 31st, 2009 at 2:13 pm

I figured that Pontagar had to be tough, you don’t become a Clan champion by pulling a paper out of a hat, Zona’s just that much better.
Whoever said it, how do you figure Pontagar cheats? Actually in this type of fight I figure the only rule is, “no weapons” so it would be impossible to cheat.

  33. NTxOkie
    July 31st, 2009 at 2:48 pm

I especially like the third panel with the guys just casually pausing to watch the fun and I was surprised that in the 4th panel, one of them was not looking around up at the stars or anywhere near the scene of the eh match.

  34. The Old Hack
    July 31st, 2009 at 5:58 pm

Tricksterson: Perhaps if you slipped a claymore into your palm? >_>

  35. Ga'Tor
    July 31st, 2009 at 6:35 pm

@ Tricksterson: I’m assuming that Pontagar’s cheating ways remain a part of his character regarding JED’s previous works (a small matter of a poisoned needle in Ponties shield re - 3Challenges). I may be in error here trying to second guess where the God of Zona’s world is going and how much he will bring forward from Zona’s past adventures. That said, cheating doesn’t seem to be far outside Pontagar’s persona as he appears to be one who will stoop at nothing to win…as long as he doesn’t get caught.
Point: that “Chuff! Whiff!!” in the unseen battle could be Pontagar attemting to throw sand/dirt in zona’s eyes. (yah okay a stretch) Now in a straight up no weapons, martial arts fight, using anything other than one’s body, including dirt, sand, twigs, snowballs etc. most people (me for one) would consider that to be cheating. However, there are those who would say “Hey it ain’t a gun, knife or hockey stick so STFU”.
Don’t know about anyone else, but I’m hoping JED will offer the fight scene as an incentive reward or something.

  36. The Old Hack
    July 31st, 2009 at 7:12 pm

Ah thanks, Ga’Tor, I hadn’t read Three Challenges. Yes, that’s a rather serious case of cheating. As to unarmed combat, I tend to be on your side, but what matters is what Erogenians consider fair. (I note that even if he did fight dirty, it didn’t help him much!)

  37. The Macnut
    July 31st, 2009 at 8:03 pm

Tricksterson: “Actually in this type of fight I figure the only rule is, “no weapons” so it would be impossible to cheat.”

Well, I would also figure one of the rules would be “no grabbing or striking the family jewels”-Zona could have ended things REAL quick by grabbing a certain vulnerable spot on Ponty’s anatomy and squeezing…hard.

  38. Speedhump
    July 31st, 2009 at 8:40 pm

I still think he is airborne… the crashing sounds could have been second and third booster stages being pummeled into his thick skull.

First prince in space? Ok, maybe not… but I suspect there is a tree waiting to catch him…

  39. Sleepinin

Voted Most Likely to Set A New World Record for Long-Distance Punching: Zona Zonn-Ipola.

  40. Kamatu
    July 31st, 2009 at 11:07 pm

I like it this way, when you keep the violence off stage for short stuff like this, it not only moves it along, it allows the audience to imagine what happened to them.

  41. Jean
    August 1st, 2009 at 12:37 am

I agree, Kamatu. Besides, I much prefer the Double Yum view of the twins… Hey, JE, can we have a cheesecake shot of the twins in the naughty section? Pleeeeeease? (Bathtime shots are good, lake, bathtub, waterfall, if you need any ideas…) You have plenty of female readers as well as male, ya know!

  42. Gremalkin
    August 1st, 2009 at 1:08 am

So what’s the tranlation of Gen Turan and Gen Thran ? They’re obviously formal greetings.

  44. God Aengus

  45. JE Draft

    Gen tal = Good morning/day
    Gen turan = Good evening/night

  46. Doc Alaska
    August 1st, 2009 at 3:45 pm

More posts. More posts! This is so addictive. Help me…? I need another zona fix. (holds up sign: Will work for Zona)

  47. JE Draft
    August 1st, 2009 at 11:10 pm

The Old Hack - Quite correct. “Ipola” and her daughters. Slip of the finger.

Mishlady - unfortuntately, Mr Big Mouth is a veritable badass and his father is a dick, and therefore he does not get pounded often enough. Like the real world, it seems that balance still eludes many Erogenian lives, despite their cultural ethic. You know a lot of Americans who live our cultural ideals perfectly? I don’t. But I love them, anyway. :)

Sleepinin - That is, indeed, one of their good qualities. They don’t talk too much.

Elfguy - Very close. More like, “This is a teachable moment. Let us observe.”

Tricksterson - Actually, there are a LOT of rules, though it may seem otherwise. Quite correct, neither will go for the “easy” win, which you described, and nothing approaching lethal force is used.

NTxOkie - Princess Zona was addressing them directly. You generally give attention if you don’t want to imply an insult and … well, you know what follows.

Ga’Tor - give me ten bucks and the book is yours. ;) But, not to be a dick: Yes, Pontagar cheated then. He was younger and he was convinced that the offense to his cha was balanced by the goal of restoring Fire Tribe dominance. Long story short, everybody has a rationalization for their douchebaggery.

    MacNut - Quite correct.

Speedhump - Heh! The visual that puts in my mind is amusing. Not unlike when Wolverine was literally put into orbit when they had that little dust-up in the M’Krann crystal.

Sleepinin - Seriously, it was only about six or seven yards.

    Kamatu - Plus - it;s *funnier.*

Jean - As soon as I get the August calendar up tomorrow. Hey - a day late is better than not at all, right?

Gremalkin - For all practicval purposes - yeah.

    Addup2 - see above.

    God Aengus - See above.

Doc Alaska - I’m rendering as fast as I can!!! If you think you’re addicted, what about me? I have a humungous story to tell that spans literally years of storytime and we’ve only gotten through the first two months! !!

  48. Moox

Well, I did it. Read through all the archives a second time. Well worth the time!

  49. Lora
    August 2nd, 2009 at 7:55 am

I’m not quite there yet, but give it time and one day I’ll spend way too much time reading the whole thing from the beginning. :) I’ve done it before with other comics so know I’m gonna do it here too… heh.

  50. Ga'Tor

@JED: Already got the book (both) thanks to your “new comp fund raiser”. No you’re not being a dick at all and I hope I didn’t post anything which may have relagated myself into that gategory. To quote another barbarian ‘toon’ “Did I err?”

    Blessings gang!

Been a long couple of days, I have been busy. I have been itching to read all of your comments. I just love how far reaching The Challenges Of Zona is, how Zona’s/JE’s fans have created this little community. It has become a joy in my daily life. Thank you John for all you do!

Jean; Oh yaaa sista…. I am right there with you. In fact I believe that was my first reaction to the twins…. “can I keep them” *grin*, and you know we are both in the Seattle area…. Hmmmmm….. I am in Everett (for you non Seattleites that’s about 20 mil north of Seattle), and I know a thing or too….. we could create our own “weird science” ya know….. {as the Carshik and Brantik fade from page}…..

Ya know I am late in arriving into comic fandom (I was a virgin, tis true). When I first found Zona I became instantly addicted. I remember going over the archives and absorbing every detail. JE’s Story and artistry caught me up and took me away. I now read a couple of comics sporadically, but the Zona pages are the only “Story” I am actually hooked into. I feel something more here, and I am grateful.

    *accepts group squish happily*

Heh, y’know, I’ve only been reading webcomics since the beginning of this year. ;) And I’ve gone from one to… er…*counting* four I follow everyday(one I started on today) and three others I read now and then.
Let’s just say I got hooked pretty badly. And it all started with abe_kroenen on Livejournal…

Ahem, back to the topic (if there was one).
I too love reading comments and thus spend way too much time doing so. Heh. But it’s fun and I like the discussions and speculation that comes from it.

*glomps Nytsky* Dudette, you are so totally in my neck of the north end! I’m closer to Everett than Seattle, but most people go ??? when I mention it, so “Seattle” it is… If you ever wanna get together for drinks and squees, let me know! I’ve been thinking about that…. Perhaps you can fit in some variation of the page of text + sketch or two format for some sections. You have enough characterization for a lot of characters so that you could do a bit of “moving it along” that way.

Lora - Just make sure you don’t do it at work. :)

Ga’Tor - No, certainly not. I was simply thinking that I might be perceived as wanting to extort money for information. :)

Hugh - You’ve got no idea. But thanks.

Nytsky - Well, a hug right back to you. And you always have such nice things to say, sometimes I had more eloquence to respond with instead of saying “thank you” in the same way over and over. It is very gratifying that this little time-waster of mine has generated some online relationships!

Lora, Sleepinin, The Old HAck - Let’s not overdo it, here. Next thing we’ll be jhaving cyberorgies …

    Okay .

    Well -

    Maybe –

    Hm.

Steve - That’s amazing! And yes, pure coincidence, just like the Hebrew meaning of “zona.” But fun!

Kamatu - I’m already doing that for “The King Is Dead,” But that’s kind of a separate project, meant to tell the old family history and stuff. Gerfworld is doing it over the summer, and I enjoy them, but it’s really not the same.

Jean - No problem. For some reason your other posts were filtered as spam - probably because of the links. But I used my superpowers as an admin to restore them. :)

    Kaila - True that.

I’d never think of it. ;) Mostly because I don’t work and schools still out. Heh.

Maybe the Big Mouth Dude did “deserve it”, but a part of me still wonders how much we would all chuckle if a female character acted like that and a male beat the living daylights out of her to “teach her a lesson”. Would we all chuckle then? Or would it be sexist? My gut tells me any author who tried that would get reamed out.

MatthewO - You bring up an excellent point, and honestly, my own gut differs from yours in what it tells me. Firstly, in order to make the parallel exact, we would have to posit that there would be another Erogenian warrior of equal stature and physicality to Pontagar, but that she be female. In the entire Erogenian tribes, the only one who fits that precise description would be Zona herself. Then we would have to imagine that Zona would need to behave in as nakedly and unashamedly insulting a way - again, out of character for Zona and indeed for most Erogenians of either sex, even in the warrior class. Then we’d need for a male Erogenian champion to stand up to her, give her a chance to make it right, and have her answer with yet another insult. Given all that, you’re damn right I, the author, would have the male champion haul off and belt her because she’s obviously a warrior, is strong enough to take a beating and has had a big hot cup of stupid this morning. I believe the real reason we’re chuckling at this big strong warrior getting a black eye is because he’s a douche, not because he’s a guy. If a woman were as big a douche and received a like comeuppance, I feel it would be quite appropriate to snicker. I know for sure I would. Pontagar is not truly being taught a lesson, in the sense that it’s usually used in our society. He’s out of line and, in his society these are the consequences.

Now, do Erogenians of both sexes solve their problems physically? Yes, where it’s appropriate. Most Erogenians are not warriors, though most men and a lot of the women like a good scrap. They are also not fond of the strong victimizing the weak, and two will sometimes together administer a little correction on a bigger or stronger one if that’s the only way it can be done. As she entered her teens, it sometimes took three grown warriors to control Zona, but she also responded to other, gentler persuasions and so grew into the more or less likeable person she is here in this story, as opposed to Pontagar who often got away with shit he shouldn’t have.

Also, there are a lot of other non-violent ways to balance the cha, which are used far more often than violence. There’s a whole system of social checks and balances that, while hardly perfect, works for this little fantasy society I’ve invented.

Moreover, I will state here and now that I have no interest in being politically correct. Nor have I any interest in being politically incorrect. I am not among those who are deathly afraid of offending with a good fantasy tale, and so there are punches I won’t pull. Similarly, I have no interest in offending for its own sake. I have my personal likes, dislikes and values which you see reflected in my work. And thanks for a very stimulating comment. I hope you continue to read and enjoy my little contribution to the decline of western culture. :)
