    L O L !

Awesome, apparently you don´t play “Yoa Mum ..” games with Zony.

Also thanks Hugh, for briefly summarizing the history between these two in the last panel comments. So everybody can appreciate the monumental stupidity of our princeling.

Is it me, or is a certain sister almost giddy with the beckoning campsite entertainment? :D

  2. Hugh
    July 24th, 2009 at 12:12 am

Awesome. I also love how much more comfortable Tula is with Mentl after they fought together. Zone must have mentioned how Mentl calmed her down in other social tense situations.

  3. Zai
    July 24th, 2009 at 12:13 am

Oh ho! This looks promising. :D

    July 24th, 2009 at 12:14 am

Dang. I was hoping to get first comment. Ah well. And it wasn’t me. JED posted all that on this site. You just have to poke around for it a bit.

  5. The MacNut
    July 24th, 2009 at 12:16 am

She does look pretty giddy to me. Yeah, ol’ Ponty has stepped in it with his big mouth, like I figured he would, though I expected it to be with Mentl….

…though I’m not sure why. Mentl himself said in the last page that Ponty virtually ignored him. He didn’t even reply to Mentl’s “hey”.

  6. Hugh
    July 24th, 2009 at 12:23 am

And Hans, great minds. Our first word on this page is indeed appropriate.

  7. Nytsky
    July 24th, 2009 at 12:50 am

OH Goody!!!! Time to show “pretty in pink” some manners ***Rubbing hands together maliciously*****, Yes, I believe “I” am a bit giddy too! It will be interesting to see how the twins react. I do not feel the same vibe from them; they seem to be more intelligent AND diplomatic. The purpose behind their association with; and close proximity to, “pretty in pink” will be telling….. In the mean time, let’s enjoy the show……. I will make the popcorn :-) Soda anyone??????

  8. TheLastGarou
    July 24th, 2009 at 1:16 am

Oh. This cannot POSSIBLY end well for Pontagar.

  9. Wolfhardt
    July 24th, 2009 at 1:45 am

Seems like a severe case of “Foot in mouth disease” asking for a little fist to mouth treatment ^^

  10. AdamZero
    July 24th, 2009 at 1:49 am

In the words of Player of the Leet World Series:
FITE FITE FITE FITE FITE FITE!!!!

  11. Jorily
    July 24th, 2009 at 3:05 am

let’s see the “wrestling part” :)
BTW… just a small note on the panel: the 3rd picture, when Zona stands up, it’s not clear what’s under the leather of her skirt…

  12. LorannaPyrel
    July 24th, 2009 at 3:17 am

Rule Number One: Always Be Ready To Back Up Your Words. Even and -especially- when your words end up implying a fault in another that people -know- you suffer.

Rule Number Two: Do Not Mess With Big Busty Barbarian Princesses Wielding Swords.

Rule Number Three: In Case Of Breaking Both Rule Number One and Rule Number Two, Keep Your Last Will And Testement Updated. ^_^

Anyone else have a mental image of Vito watching from some corner of reality or another, munching popcorn or kicking back with some quality liquor?

    Also, hi again all :)

    Loranna

  13. Lora
    July 24th, 2009 at 3:42 am

    Yeah, now I do. :)

Oh, Tula have a great face in that last panel. Like ‘okay, Zona, kick this guy sorry ass.’

  14. The MacNut
    July 24th, 2009 at 4:03 am

Zona’s not wearing her sword. Which is even worse for Pontagar in that it’s gonna be a fistfight-where Zona’s considerable strength will come into play.

It’ll be over in one punch. At least with a weapon ol’ Ponty might’ve had a chance.

  15. Acipenser
    July 24th, 2009 at 4:37 am

Tula does have a vested interest. After all, that’s her mother he’s calling a fool as well.

  16. Acipenser
    July 24th, 2009 at 4:41 am

Oh, and I don’t think Ponty will be a one-punch kind of guy. Take at least two, and he’ll make her work for those. After all, this is an Erogenian prince we’re talking about.

  17. Gremalkin
    July 24th, 2009 at 4:46 am

After this is done i hope Mentl remembers “Heal The Wound” by Point of Grace, because Pontagar will need some serious 1st-Aid !

  18. Steve
    July 24th, 2009 at 4:49 am

Remembering that both Zona and Pontagar are the offical champions of their respective tribes, this is not just two people arguing, it’s (by proxy) the two tribes arguing. As a champion Pontagar should know better than say something that could be considered an insult to another tribe’s leader, let alone the one that has been accepted by all the other tribes as overall leader. As her mother’s champion Zona has no choice but to defend her honour, and since they’re all erogenans there’s no excuse of cultural misunderstanding. What I really don’t get is why provoke someone who has a history of beating you? Does the guy not learn from past experience? He either backs down know or gets thumped big time.

  19. The MacNut
    July 24th, 2009 at 6:01 am

Maybe he thinks he’ll get a chance to do the thumping this time. Which makes him a prideful idiot, but then again maybe it makes him a typical Erogenian…

@Acipenser: remember we’re talking about a woman who can toss thick tree trunks around like they’re saplings (remember her last encounter with Yatta-ta?), so unless Ponty is a LOT tougher than he looks, it’s only gonna take one punch. Sure, she’s probably gonna have to work to land that punch, but once she does…game over man. Game over.

  20. Mishlady
    July 24th, 2009 at 6:11 am

Unless there is a reason that he is trying to provoke Zona. I mean, Zona did say that his father was the only one against a generally beneficent treaty (I mean, if my kingdom was being threatened by Urtts, and my eldest was away with most of the army and I was Queen Yanora…I’d want a few muscular people coming to help me out) then his father might have dropped hints that perhaps having Zona hurt or otherwise incapacitated might be good. Who knows what might happen then once Queen Ipola’s champion is out for awhile-perhaps a coupe?

    Good storyline!! :)

  21. FireFae
    July 24th, 2009 at 6:47 am

You wanna dance pretty boy? Kick his butt Zona!

  22. Soulgazer
    July 24th, 2009 at 7:53 am

Pretty boy looks like he is the type to settle his differences with a crossbow at 150 yards. Three to one he “apologizes” then tries to hit her where and when she is weakest.

  23. Lebbrin
    July 24th, 2009 at 8:02 am

Oh, this is gonna be so good. Pass the popcorn Nytsky, I brought the beer.

  24. Fatuncle
    July 24th, 2009 at 8:17 am

Whatever his reasons for dissent, Pontagar isn’t flinching or backing down. He seems willing to take a beating for what he believes in.

This might sound a little odd, but I suddenly have more respect for the man. It might be a point of honor here, sort of like a NO vote when everyone else voted YES, and you are well aware that it is not going to make a difference. A matter of conscience. Erogenans being a very physical people, we would occasionally witness trial by combat, decision to the one left standing, instead of the one who shouts loudest.

If he is indeed the man I am beginning to suspect, once this is settled, he won’t be doing any backstabbing.

  25. wysiwyg

    Zona’s Fist —> Pontagar’s Face

  26. Tricksterson
    July 24th, 2009 at 8:57 am

I get the impression that a brain-to-mouth disconnect is an endemic part of being part of the Fire Clan.
    Gleefully anticipating smackdown.

  27. Boomer Gonzales
    July 24th, 2009 at 10:02 am

    OOOOO!!

That dudes gonna get FCKED UP!!

  28. Ga'Tor
    July 24th, 2009 at 10:20 am

“Nuh-uh. Not this time.” Oh yez! JED you are so the master of the last panel. I mean the pages are all wonderful but you always seem to add that little extra dash of… well, just call it ‘magick’, at the end. That is a nailed depiction of ‘rapt anticipation’ on Tula’s face.
Re: the “3 Challenges of Zona” I’m assuming she won all her battles therein. In any case, Zona has HAD to have bitch slapped Ponty on more than one occasion. So one has to wonder just how stupid Pontagar is, or is he really a masochist and into pain? Will the courtesy of the camp prevent the manglement of a princling? I’ll be tuning in Monday in ‘rapt anticipation’…

all i have is the mice from that Disney movie “g-force” with their chant of “Poop in his hand, poop in his hand”… except with “cave in his face! cave in his face!”

  30. AdamZero
    July 24th, 2009 at 10:39 am

    I represent my previous statement:

    FITE FITE FITE FITE FITE

  31. Acipenser
    July 24th, 2009 at 10:48 am

@MacNut: true, Zona’s an extra-heavyweight. But who says Poncy Git isn’t?

Best (or worst) case scenario: “It’s only a flesh wound!” etc…

  32. Shaolin
    July 24th, 2009 at 10:56 am

Just a suggestion, JE… I would love to see a “WIKIZONA”.
    I know that everything here has a huge background… and I don’t wanna miss it ! :)
You could also show a new information as a vote-incentive, than, some time after you put the same information in the wikizona.
BTW, I sill love your comic and still wanna buy your books.

  33. Nytsky
    July 24th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

    Blessings all;

Don’t ya LOVE that Friday feeling?

Mishlady: My thoughts exactly:-o We don’t know why the twins are here (yet). There may be an antagonistic purpose in their arrival. On the other hand they may be here for reasons of their own; which is my current guess (my mind could change at any moment… and often does). Or they could actually be present to support our friends.

In the interim I will dreamily concoct pictures of ”fist in face” syndrome. And yes, I like to believe Veto is watching ……… ***passing popcorn***

  34. Kern
    July 24th, 2009 at 12:19 pm

Does this world have false teeth?

The thought does strike, though, that attacking the Champion is different from attacking a non-champ, as they represent the tribe. If Zona attacks first, it could be seen as the Moon Tribe attacking the Fire Tribe, which could lead to the Alliance between them crumbling away.

Unless, of course, that’s the plan all along…

  35. JE Draft
    July 24th, 2009 at 2:12 pm

hans - No, you definitely don’t insult Ipola in front of her champion. There is no way Zona could ignore that.

Hugh - Yes, being through all M&T have been through together already in their short association, it’s not surprising. Also, yes, they’ve discussed the back story. What better way to pass the time on the trail or around the campfire?

    Zai - Mmmmmee-yeeesss… :)

Macnut - No, Mentl’s not on Pontagar’s radar so much at this time. And let’s just say Tula’s seen this show before.

Nytsky - Well, we shall see, shan’t we? As for Carshik and Brantik, they *appear* to be a little more agreeable. Or maybe they both have just enough sense to keep their mouths shut?

TheLastGarou - Well, as Master Yoda said, “difficult to tell. always in motion is the future. Reach back there I cannot. Scratch me, you can? Ooooo, yes! A Jedi’s power floooows from the Force …”

Wolfhardt - Hey, at least he’s sincere …

AdamZero - I dunno. I’m thinking tea and crumpets …

Jorily - If you wanna see that kind of wrestling, it’s on PPV. ;) And I’m not sure what you mean about under the skirt. She’s got a barbarian thong that’s not really showing, but other than that, just her tanned, muscular behind.

LorannaPyrel - Those are good rules to live by. And now, of course, I have to try to render that picture of Vito … =D

Lora - Thanks! I’m always glad when it comes out well, and the emotions are properly communicated.

Acipenser - Yup. And I’m still holding out for pilliow-fights. Or maybe The Comfy Chair …

Gremalkin - Ahh, that’s another good one! Make a note. (scribble-scribble-scribble)

Steve - What you say is true, this becomes a contentious issue. Pontagar’s motivation or lack of same is an interesting discussion, but one thing you all should understand: Erogenians are *never* afraid to take a thumping. It’s also generally considered no disgrace to lose to someone stronger or better. Naturally, there are exceptions,(otherwise they’d be dull) but when Tula said to Gorshash that they weren’t afraid of death or pain, that wasn’t bravado. It was a cultural value.

Mishlady - Oh, there are inductions dangerous and skullduggery afoot, make no mistake. Whether they infect Erogenia itself is a good question. I will say that it will not be answered on Tuesday, but beyond that …

FireFae - you are all so bloodthirsty! Isn’t there anyone who wants this to end with everybody singing “Kumbaya?”

    Soulgazer - Hmmm. Mmmmaybe.

Lebbrin - Gee, now the pressure is on for me to put something up that is worth all the salty snax and beer …

Fatuncle - Finally, somebody standing up for the poor oppressed Fire Tribe! ;)

wysiwyg - Sure you don’t want other body parts involved? There was a call for wrestling earlier …

Tricksterson - Oh, but how boring would that be? No, as much as we talk about Erogenian culture and tribal differences, there are smart people and dodos in every tribe. What we’re witnessing here is Pontagar’s own peculiar brand of expression in all its sophistication and subtlety.

Boomer Gonzales - I think it’s great that Zona has a fan named “Boomer!” Thanks for being here! :)

Ga’Tor - Glad you’re rapt, and thanks for the kudos. In the find-yer-path book, she could win or lose. I’m using one of the happy endings as the framework for her back story, so yeah - she cleaned his clock.

sentientcheese - Okay. Now I have to see this movie. Guinea pigs. As GI Joe-types. Okay. ;)

Shaolin - I don’t know about a wikizona, but Zona does have a small comixpedia page: http://www.comixpedia.org/index.php?title=Challenges_of_Zona I suppose I could add all the backstory and stuff in there. And if you want to buy the books, just donate ten bucks or more for each one and they are yours!

Kern - Nifty little thoughts, there. But we shall see exactly how the cha falls out on Tuesday. :)

  36. Mishlady
    July 24th, 2009 at 2:22 pm

I will add to my previous comment that, if any rot hasn’t gone into Ergonia, then perhaps there are those watching who might take advantage of the situation.

Yanora’s younger son might have more Ergonians under his thumb…

  37. Kris
    July 24th, 2009 at 2:46 pm

Haha, I knew after reading the last panel that the comments would be scenting the blood in the air, and they did not disappoint.

One Can of WhoopA$$ coming right up!

  39. NTxOkie
    July 24th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

TheLastGarou - Well, as Master Yoda said, “difficult to tell. always in motion is the future. Reach back there I cannot. Scratch me, you can? Ooooo, yes! A Jedi’s power floooows from the Force …”

    Welcome to the quote file!!!

  40. Moox
    July 24th, 2009 at 5:07 pm

Prediction: There is no fight (we just had a fight, remember). Zona intimidates him and uses other Erogenian methods of “diplomacy” to get him to back down.
Question: what is the deal with the twins?

  41. Fatuncle
    July 24th, 2009 at 5:38 pm

    JED

Oddly enough, my PayPal transaction did not open a window for any sort of note, so I sent an email.

  42. Lebbrin

Okay, shameless plug for JED. VOTE! This adventure deserves to be higher on the list. GO back to the latest page, scroll down and click the link.

Thank you, we now return to the latest speculation on how Pontegar gets pummeled.

I believe Pontagar is about to learn Zona’s Law.

Anything that can get punched, will ^_^

  46. Sockpuppet
    July 25th, 2009 at 8:21 am

At least he’s man enough to take the thumping. If you’re going to be ass, at least take the hit for it

  47. hans
    July 25th, 2009 at 10:01 am

Yeah, looks like they all are that way. Kinda like Klingons with a lifelong gym and swingers club membership. ;)

Can´t wait to find out more about them Erogenians.

  48. Gann
    July 25th, 2009 at 2:12 pm

Awesome story JED, been reading it for a bit now and you never disapoint. As for Pontagars buttholishness, it is possible that if the Fire tribe is a true analog for Celtic culture, the Prince might be pushing Zona’s buttons simply cause thats acceptable behaviour. In the Irish Annals the Heroes often played”yo Mama” games until somebody got thier asses whupped. Ponty might be challenging Z to see if she’s gotten soft since the last time they met…course either way, it’s still a whuppin’ waitin to happen.

  49. Sleepinin
    July 25th, 2009 at 2:54 pm

    Correction!

Zona’s Law: Anything that should be punched, will.

  50. AdamZero
    July 25th, 2009 at 4:01 pm

The other thing is, besides Tula, all the Eroginians we’ve seen so far are elite warrior class. I’m guessing the Civies will look LESS beefy, and more beauty.

  51. Ed
    July 25th, 2009 at 9:50 pm

Well, maybe no sword is no problem. Maybe ritualistic duels are fought weaponless, kills fewer of your own warriors. That’s why Tul holds Mentl back - no lasting harm will come of it… (she likely knows the local version of a regenerate spell, someone must - in all those battles, no one has marked Zona AT ALL? Unlikely.)

Adam, Zona has some beef, but she’s pretty darn cute in her own right… and hey, Muhammed Ali’s daughter is pretty good looking too - and REAL tough… and Zona’s mom is likely pretty good looking, if you judge by her daughters.

  52. hans

    :)

I’ll have that tea, thanks. :)

And someone said ‘friendly fight’ and I immediately thought of this: http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20080606
He he, that’s a very friendly fight. ;)

  56. JE Draft
    July 26th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Mishlady - Not commenting, cuz I might give summtin away …:)

Kris - They do seem a bloodthirsty bunch. Wotcha gonna do?

NTxOkie - We shall see, we shall see. And I am glad you liked “Yoda’s” wisdom. He may be a Jedi, but he’s still an old fart …

Moox - The twins are Pontagar’s companions, Carshik and Brantik. So far, they haven’t said a hell of a lot, but then it hasn’t been their place to do so. People like them more than Pontagar so far, but then that’s not hard.

Fatuncle - Because of the nature of the stuff involved, I am answering all donations manually.

Lebbrin - Many thanks! Y’all have me up to 23! Woo-hoo!

    Sage - I don’t know if she’s that hungry, actually …

    AdamZero - LOL!

    Sleepinin - Heh. I like it. :)

Sockpuppet - That’s pretty much typical of most Erogenians. Now, naturally, not everyone is gonna be gracious or good-hearted about it …

hans - hang out here and you’ll learn. Next month I will be scanning the old “Vacationer’s Guide to Erogenia” where some of this stuff began to get codified for RPG. Again, not all of it applies directly to the comic, since I’ve changed my mind on some specifics of history and culture since then, but it’s decidedly closer to the current canon than “Three Challenges” is. I’ll make it available for a donation.

Gann - Thanks for the kudos! Still, not going to comment on your speculations quite yet. But wonder on …

Ed - The healing powers of the Erogenian priest class are excellent, and reflect recovered or retained ancient Erogenian knowledge of anatomy and pathology as well as magickal abilities to basically temporarily supercharge the body’s own repair mechanisms. Broken bones, bruises, cuts and knocked-out teeth are usually put right without scars, especially in the young. You saw a direct example on page 121.

hans - Also check out “The King Is Dead” - http://www.soulgeek.com/comics/zona/HTMLpages/TheKingIsDead.html

    TheLastGarou - ?

Steve - heh. I like that, too. :)

Lora - You know Phil Foglio is my hero. And another thing: Zona, Xena, Zeetha - is there a PATTERN here? All I can say is ZONA came FIRST!

  57. hans
    July 26th, 2009 at 7:51 pm

I was trying to find that Page. Thanx JE!
Would be great if that page was available through the main page though.

Will be interesting to see how you will render her now, after a couple of years working on Zona.

Sooo can´t wait to see the welcome home feast & partey.
Hey, any excuse to have a feisty Erogeninan party will do. :)

  58. The Macnut
    July 26th, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Heh, hope the lusty Erogenian lasses who will no doubt be scoping out Mentl (even BEFORE he starts singing!) notice the bronze anklet on him, or it could be a somewhat awkward time for him. Or perhaps Zona will be hanging all over him the entire time and spare him that awkwardness-after all no woman’s gonna be bold enough to try to poach the Princess’s consort right?

(I will be LMAO if another female warrior, built like Zona but a redhead or brunette, shows up and puts the moves on Mentl right in front of Zona. Talk about FITE FITE FITE!)

Then again, since Mentl doesn’t have the lantern-jawed monster-killer look, maybe the other Erogenian lasses will treat him like Pontagar…

  59. The Macnut
    July 26th, 2009 at 8:57 pm

…as in, treat him the way Pontagar has so far.

  60. hans

    Uhm, no.

The second a woman sees another woman hanging all over a man, that man instantly becomes major date material. NO fuckin´matter what he looks like.

Mentl will be in for a ride, if JE deems it so, of course.

Hmm, I always did like Xena and took to Zeetha right away. :D No wonder I like Zona, too. Those warrior women are classy.

I just can’t wait to see Queen Ipola’s reaction to Zona and Mentl.

Either she’ll be overjoyed to see her little girl finally find a man who she really 100% loves, or she’ll be both overjoyed and also slightly disappointed that he hasn’t got any hulking bulk….

…disappointment that should quickly fade when she learns about Mentl’s mystic prowess. Unless of course, she’s just totally upset that Zona has chosen a non-Erogenian.

Somehow I can’t see Ipola being this narrow-minded, but that’s the option most likely to lead to dramatic conflict between mother and daughter. It IS a dramatic classic-child brings home lover/spouse that parents can’t stand, at least at first, then lover/spouse wins parents over…

Well, Mentl already managed to catch the eye of one Queen. Another one could be very well on the menu too.
And what a mess that would be. ;)

Ooh, forgot about that option-Queen and Princess vying for the same man. You’re right hans, that would be a delightful mess.

    Hi Gang;

    Happy monday:-)

I believe Queen Ipola will take one look at the glow in her daughters eyes and “know” Mentl is right for her daughter. I am sure Ipola respects her daughter (and not necessarily because Zona “is” her daughter; although pride could play into her feelings as well) because her daughter is worthy of respect, and is able to “maintain” said respect.

I believe Ipola will love mentl. and although (initially) this will be due to his reflection in Zonas eyes, he too will be able to maintain that respect.

Besides, a Mothers wish truly “IS” for her daughter to be happy, but the truth is…. Zona can take care of herself (and her clan), I am sure Ipola knows this with every fiber of her being. She is her Fathers daughter too!

    Be Well;
    Nytsky
