Meanwhile, back in The Otherwhen …

Oooh, sucks to be Gorshash right now. Wonder how badly and how long Shuach is going to “punish” (i.e. torture) G for his failure?

Yet another great page, JE. Especially nice depiction of the evil god.

“First we shall tie him up, and then we shall spank him”……”Yes, yes! A spanking, a royal spanking”!
OH MY GODS! This Is Good! I love that he is naked!!!!! No cloths….. he has been lowered to COW status….. How sweet it is! Yepers! This is a good day!
Spank Him HARD, Spank him VERY HARD:-)

    …Whoa.
I just… Gaped when I saw this load. Just- wow. Incredibly done, he definately looks like the incarnation of big-bad.

I love the background, as well, and the floating rock. I mean… Wow. Definately… atmospheric!

… will, perhaps, this one dance for us?

How exactly did these two get together. I can understand Gorshash desiring power, Shuach wanting agents, and their mutual love of death, doom, and destruction… but Shuach obviously is not some weak helpless shadow of his former self, and the Urts in general do not seem the subserviant type. So, how, when, and why did they join? Maybe more interesting is to ask: How long till one betrays the other?

    Nice presence attack.

On the other hand, I can’t help looking at Shuach and thinking of Hades from the Disney flick Hercules saying, “What? Is my hair out?” :P

… Okay, I am scared now. Shauch is sooo going to either “temper” his current tool (who may or may not survive the experience with his sanity intact) or else is going to find himself a new one, one more suited to dealing with the stubborn Princesses.

Or so I am predicting >.> <.< But a page like this just gets the imagination going. ^_^

So, Mentl’s proven himself able to stand up in a fight, Zona’s had yet more proof that she picked the right man, Tula showed that she could take Gorshash even without the element of surprise and a handy playing piece to toss into his mouth, and the cats got to prove that giant sabertooths are the best. And Gorshash even got to make a dire prediciton of doom!

    Nicely done, JED.

Shuach, god of naughtiness, just kill him and replace him. I’m telling you, G is not going to win the day for you against all that Erogenian goodness.

Oh dear. I could practically hear James Earl Jones’ voice in my head when I read Shuach’s lines there. Got a definite Darth Vadery “I find your lack of faith disturbing” vibe from this page. :)

Guess now we know why there´s two giants stomping around in the world.

I sure hope they get some better weapons when they visit with Zona, and some weapons training wouldn´t be half bad either.

Awesome scene! LOL at the obligatory lightning bolt, and thnx for NOT having some clichee (DS9)badlands infernal whirlwinds in the background. :D

  15. Fatuncle
    July 3rd, 2009 at 7:33 am

    Funny. Gorshash stopped laughing.

“Priest Gorshash. I am displeased. And unless you give something to be happy about, I’m going to take that rock you’re kneeling on, and shove it up your attitude.”

Gorshash: “I am in so much trouble…”

“My lord, Shuagh. I faced not just one mage, but two. The second had a magic, the likes of which not seen before. Your humble vassal begs mercy.”

  17. BPFH
    July 3rd, 2009 at 8:04 am

@SteinarB: Indeed. I even read Shuach’s lines in my best James Earl Jones as Darth Vader imitation, and it does sound bada**, doesn’t it? :)

  18. Soulworker
    July 3rd, 2009 at 8:15 am

LorannaPyrel: If by “temper” you meant augment and strengthen Gorshash…I believe that you are correct…As I said in an earlier post, I think JED made this character for the long haul in the story… ;) he may need to be “encouraged” by his god for the moment however…it will also be interesting to see how Shauch helps his minion “deal” with Mentl’s magic…Ya did not need a lot of dialogue for this one JED….=)

    July 3rd, 2009 at 12:30 pm

Very good job. And yes, I would pick James Earl Jones as well to voice Shuach at this point. I think that after a certain amount of painful groveling-aka, Gorshash cringing on the floating rock begging for mercy while Shuach does some pain inflicting-Gorshash will be given one last chance to prove himself.

If I were JED I’d make sure to torture everyone by making Gorshash win for awhile then go down in flames at the last minute. LOL. Sorry fellow writer imagination going here. (A la LOTR: Return of the King-just when everything seems ready to go down the sh*tter, Frodo-albeit for selfish reasons of keeping the precious to himself-knocks Gollum off the ledge, into the lava thereby destroying the precious and starting the downfall of the Lord of Doom.)

I think that the top half without the text bubble would make a VERY nice background. Good job on the Lord of Doom and Fires!

I wonder what he’s more displeased about…the fact that G lost, or that he spilled the beans about his plot to escape back into the world?

  25. firegoat
    July 3rd, 2009 at 4:05 pm

You’d be displeased too if you had no skin on your face and your head was covered in flames…oh yeah, and no legs! That would really suck, having no legs…

  26. AdamZero
    July 3rd, 2009 at 4:54 pm

I’m kinda with elfguy, Gorsash screwed the sneak attack with his gloating. You NEVER EVER EVER GLOAT that your ‘dark lord’ IS returning, you say. “One day he shall break free.” “No prison lasts forever” and you say it with a weakened, indignant voice.

God… I mean, I get it’s a taunt, but he had to KNOW he as going to be in for it.

  27. Dromin
    July 3rd, 2009 at 5:44 pm

Definitely a nice page. Lots of interesting shading in the background coupled with the wispy clouds makes for a sense of depth … like it could go on forever.

And I agree, the lack of a lot of verbage here adds a lot to the page. Nothing else to be said really. :-)

Gor is no doubt in for a rough ride (heh). But he’s also too useful a tool (heheh) to be casually tossed aside regardless of getting his ass whupped by a mere girl. And make no mistake, Tula took out G with little, I don’t recall any, help from Mentl. I’d also think that Shuach, being a god of fire, death, pain etc., doesn’t have a surplus of followers. No, their’s is a relationship of mutual need: Shuach needing physical representation in the ‘real’ world to prepare for his comeback and Gorshash needing/wanting the power his ‘god’ can grant him.
As with all thug/gangster type hierarchies I doubt there is a lot of love or real loyalty lost between the two.

  32. Steve
    July 4th, 2009 at 3:56 pm

Yes, I think Gorshash’s return from the otherwhen will be a painful journey for him. I’ve started wondering how come he hooked up with Shuach in the first place. Shuach was the Erogenan God at one stage, before they deserted him for the goddesses. Presumably the Urtts had their own God, so why abandon your own for a God that gor so soundly whipped none of his original followers want anything to do with him? Gorshash must have thought he had an edge, or knew something the Erogenans didn’t - or is it that he’s just supremely arrogant & thought He could control Shuach?

    July 4th, 2009 at 10:34 pm

After Skeletor decided to quit messing about, get serious, and get rid of the silly purple outfit, he quickly rose to and beyond his title. He has of course kept in shape.

  34. demas
    July 4th, 2009 at 10:49 pm

Just a thought, but what if the Urtts are Erogenans? We know Shauch got banished, but what if his most loyal followers/priests either got banished with him and found a way out, or laid low and plotted for his eventual return. Kind of like a voluntary version of the Elves/Orcs transformation from LOTR. That would also explain why Urtts and Humans can crossbreed. I tried looking for any evidence of this in backstory on the Erogenan Empire, but those pages appear to be missing from the archives.

    Hi guys;

    From: http://www.soulgeek.com/comics/zona/HTMLpages/Zona_Bio_.html

“Gorshash is , as Vito described him, “The most dangerous thing in this dimension - a smart Urtt.” Highly intelligent, ambitious and completely ruthless, Gorshash’s main weakness is also his greatest strength: An insatiable curiosity and desire for knowledge. His dream is to completely subjugate all human empires and spread the Urtt influence over the whole continent. To that end, he has studied histories and grimoires thousands of years old and has uncovered long-dead secrets of the ancient Erogenian Empire and its bloodthirsty god, Shuach. His curiosity and overconfidence has cost him dearly, as he suffered a humiliating and completely unexpected personal defeat at Tula’s hands. Among all those in the world, he now hates her the most completely.”

It would appear as if Gorshash found Shuach, not the other way around. He went seeking, attempting to become more powerful and was “rewarded” when the God favored him….. but we shall see how long that lasts. I do agree that Shuach is going to continue to need an emissary, and what more frightening one than one who has been “frightened”?

  38. Lora
    July 5th, 2009 at 5:12 pm

Am I the only one, who thinks Shuach should be a little more bony? I’d liked a more skeleton like god. >:) Very cool.

And the whole page could make a good poster, not just the top part. ;)

Gorshash is in so much trouble now…

  41. demas
    July 6th, 2009 at 5:16 am

Kaila, maybe like most prisoners he works out obsessively to counter the boredom. All that pumping iron will do wonders for your arms and upper body, but stops short at the neck :-)

  42. Fatuncle

MYTSKY, that makes sense. Shuach didn’t break out, Gorshash broke in.

  43. JE Draft
    July 6th, 2009 at 11:34 am

Back from a long Fourth Of July Weekend, and what a spirited discussion we’re having! Pinapples and cactus? Surprised no one mentioned Edward The Second! (look it up! ) This is not the end of the scene, and some of the questions will be answered or addressed tonight/tomorrow when I update.

So far as Shuach’s appearance is concerned, this is the Otherwhen and he’s a god. He can look however he wants. Right now he’s going for the Skeletor-On-Fire look to scare the bejeezus out of Gorshash. As Yanora dryly observed, it’s “mostly theater,” but then here, at least, he also has the muscle to back up that look with actions.

As to how Gorshash and Shuach wound up with their fates entwined, it will be revealed, but not just now. Suffice to say that Gorshash is a very sincere worshiper, and Shuach is just the sort of god that the Urtts like.

The relationship of the Erogenians to the Urtts is ancient and complex. More than that I will not say, because it’s actually a reaaaaallly good story and I don’t want to give anything away just yet. `Nuff said, but feel free to speculate! Some of you might guess right. :)

  44. Steve
    July 6th, 2009 at 12:30 pm

Oh No! Don’t tell me that the Erogenans that worshipped Shuach bred the Urtts! Though that would explain permanent bad feeling between the two.

  45. AdamZero
    July 6th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

well this whole interbreeding = former Erogenans theory falls short at a key point. Moth Urr-naitts are still born prolly 9 out of 10

  46. Fatuncle
    July 6th, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Edward the Second? Eewwww. Executed, if rumor has it right, by having a red hot poker inserted into his anus.

  47. Elfguy
    July 6th, 2009 at 11:11 pm

    @Fatuncle

Reminds me of Mel Brooks’ song “The Inquisition” from History of the World, Part 1

    ”
I was sitting In a temple, I was minding My own business, I was listening
    To a lovely Hebrew mass…
Then these papist Persons plunge in And they throw me in a Dungeon,
and they shove A red hot poker up my ass.

Is that considerate? Is that polite? And not a tube Of Preparation H in sight!

  48. Jason
    July 7th, 2009 at 9:49 am

Not that anyone will read this now it’s not the most recent page- but there has been much evidence to prove that Edward II actually was not murdered in 1327 when the rumour was spread that he was. There was a single report given that he was murdered- with many rumours as to how he was murdered being spread later- but there were many reports and accounts about his survival, to the point of Edward’s halfbrother the Earl of Kent being executed two years later for (supposedly) attempting to rescue Edward II and return him to the throne.

…Just a point. xD The red-hot-poker thing is popular, though, mostly because people are bloodthirsty.

  49. JE Draft
    July 7th, 2009 at 10:21 am

Jason - I do know most of what you’re saying here - even modern history is sometimes a guess at what is truth and what is popular fiction. The Marlowe play is really what I was referring to. Saw an extraordinary production of it with Ian McKellan in the title role back in `80. The climactic scene was … eeeyuch.

  50. Fatuncle
    July 7th, 2009 at 11:14 am

Jason Oh, I go back and reread the previous pages … notice that I said, “rumor“.

  51. Jason
    July 8th, 2009 at 10:29 am

JE- I honestly don’t know much about the play, but I do know a little about English history (what with it being covered at English schools…!) I won’t say I remember much, but I’m interested in psychology, and part of that is the interesting way people tend to latch on to the most gruesome possibility and treat it as truth.

Fatuncle- I did pick up on that, yes! I just felt the need to point out that rumour probably DOESN’T have it right. xP But the whole thing still worked for the purposes of discussion. (I just feel the need to be a smart arse occasionally- no pun intended.)

@demaar: “Kaila, maybe like most prisoners he works out obsessively to counter the boredom. All that pumping iron will do wonders for your arms and upper body, but stops short at the neck.”

I spent 18 years as a prison guard and Trust Me On This:

    1) Most prisoners do NOT pump iron, because the freaks hog the weight room.

    2) We (at least I) never had trouble managing the bulky prisoners. They did bully other prisoners.

    3) Pumping iron does affect them above the neck. It moves their body fat up between their ears.
