I NEED A NEW COMPUTER

Posted by John at July 1st, 2009

Okay.

I’ve had it.

I need a new computer.  This little beast and I have had a good three years or so together, but she’s tired, and her sound board has never worked, anyway.   And because my pride has been worn away by age, I am now willing to beg y’all for a little assistance.

But because I have yet some pride in these perilous times, such a deal I’ll make you:

For every donation I have a little special thank you graphic I’ll send you.

Every donation of 5 bucks or more gets one of two special desktops. Specify SFW or NSFW. You know what I’m talking about, here.

Every donation of 10 bucks or more gets one of the following:

A pdf of the original “Three Challenges Of Zona”

or “Zona And The Children Of The Moon,”

Chil Of Moon Cover

(yes I FINALLY scanned `em in. The files are huge, because I was too generous in my resolution, and I’m looking to compress them, but only limited success. Working on it.)

OR - if you are not interested in crude fantasy porn from the Stone Age, that same ten bucks will get you a custom RPG character portrait. High resolution, 768×1024, one character, stock background.

For 15 bucks and over, I actually still have some large and medium-sized Zona tee-shirts.

If you even suspect that that is too small for you, don’t ask for an Extra Large, because I’m out. On the other hand, if I get enough donations specifically for them, then I can afford a new run of just XL.

That’s it for now. Once again, let me reiterate my pledge: The web comic is free forever. But yours truly is beat for bread, and this cranky old CPU is costing me time and frustration.

Anything, including Monopoly Money and food stamps, is accepted gratefully (so long as it’s in excess of a dollar. Paypal’s fees eat up too much to make that worth it.)

Thanks in advance, and thanks always for your support in every way. You guys are great!

You got it my friend. A rather reasonable request.
Good thoughts of prosperity and computer health (and rebirth) your way!

Absolutely. Hey, you might also want to put that handy donate button up elsewhere on the site. Or perhaps I’m going blind and just missed it (entirely possible!). :P

    Good luck!

How much memory do you have in your current rig?
Upgrading to 4 gig for your current(I presume) Windows XP box helps quite a bit. XP won´t use more than 4, so more is a waste. Unless you go with Vista(gag). But then you REALLY need a better CPU(fucking VISTA crap).

Gawd, if there’s any way to avoid it, do NOT go to VISTA! That junk OS is Microsofts biggest mistake since WinME…

    Re: Donations.
More than happy to help. Is there a $ limit as to where I can get both of those lovely PDFs? I see references to earlier work in your online comic here, and I really really want to read the older stuff so I can fully understand those references. I’d even do that instead of the TShirt. I’d need yet another X in there to get one to fit me anyway. (2XL) LOL

And I’d take the NSFW Desktop thanks… *grin*

    Gah…

Totally forgot to add… that if $10 got me one PDF, I’d be more than happy to make it $20 for both. Happy to help!

In for $20.00 for both PDF’s. Thanks JED

Great comic! Well worth a few bucks!
Incoming PayPal! 2 desktops and 2 PDFs, please!
    Thanks JED!

Oh, and Ted, up until now there wasn’t a donate button. JED has simply been doing this for the fun of it. (Ok, and maybe to see all of our adoring posts.) :-D He only put this one up because of his computer woes.

I’ve said before he should put one up. Of all the web-comics, this is the first that I’ve WANTED to donate to… Now I actually can. :)

Thanks Lebbrin, glad to know I wasn’t going insane. :D This is definitely a comic worth donating to. Go JED!

Actually, I wouldn’t mind a pdf of Tula or of the cats if you have one… ;) Awesome comic. First one I have ever donated to.

    I sent bucks!

FYI: The paypal link didn’t work with Firefox but IE worked.

Hi just ordered a shirt and the two pdfs but I forgot to ask about shipping on the shirt.

Oh, and sorry I misspelled you name. :X

I sent money! Do you email us asking what we want or should we just post it here?

You all are amazing, and I am really really humbled. Thanks so much for your generosity. I am right now out of town and engaged in Fourth Of July Weekendish stuff all day today and tomorrow. I hope I get time to reply to you all individually soon, but in any event you can put the notes about your preferences into the Paypal notes, or email jedraft@barbarianprincess.com with what you want and by Sunday I will surely send you the links and stuff via email. (if not before)

As for shipping for the shirts, I’m pretty sure I can absorb the cost of that if you;re in the continental US. Other than that, we’ll talk! :)

Sent $30, but as I said in the Paypal note, I only want the 2 pdfs. Thanks for a great comic, and I hope you can get your new comp soon!

I sent $50.00 for both PDFs (Been meaning to make another donation for a while now, so this was a good excuse). I already have a shirt, so I am good on that (eventually, you might consider a different shirt and that I would like to get - even pay for maybe). Goon luck on the new puter…

Bucks sent. NO shirts pls, save yourself the postage, I’m looking forward to the PDFs. :) Also if you don’t reach your desired goal in a couple of weeks I’ll toss you some more. Just leave the alms page open.

A little late, but i sent you some cash.

I am really dumbfounded. You guys have popped nearly 800 bucks in the kitty since July 1st. This is almost exactly enough for me to get a system that I was looking at. Bless you all - I think I’ve responded to everyone who donated, but if I haven’t, please send an email to remind me. If I’ve responded and you haven’t made clear what your wishes are regarding the incentives you want, then, once again, send an email to jedraft@barbarianprincess.com and I will reply/fulfill as soon as possible.

    Many, many thanks!

I wish to commend you on your quick response with the donation incentives.

  22. Hugh
    July 6th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

Like Gary, I was very impressed with your responsiveness and with the incentives themselves. I was expecting a couple of 15-30 page booklets, not the 105 page and 137 page books that I got. It will take me quite a bit of time to work through those various story archs and I am looking forward to it, as well as what else is revealed about your world (I know that some things in the current story will be different from what you have in the old books).

  23. Hugh
    July 6th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

And besides, JED, your fans have every incentive to want you to have decent equipment to work with. We want you creating new updates, not staring at an hourglass icon!

Is anybody else able to open their Zona PDFs?

It’s IE by default but it just makes IE go haywire. I tried Adobe but it said it wasn’t a supported file type or the file was damaged. Any suggestions. This is the first one that’s suppose to be quite large, I’m DLing the second right now.

  25. JE Draft
    July 6th, 2009 at 4:39 pm

    Latty,

It’s a zip file. You need to have winrar or winzip or some other compressing/decompressing application to open it. Both are available for free download at download.cnet.com Then use the password. The PDF itself opens just fine using Adobe Reader 8, I assume 9 will work, too. Available at adobe.com.

  26. Hugh
    July 6th, 2009 at 9:32 pm

My Windows Explorer (not IE) opened the zip file just fine after I saved it to my hard drive. Once the file was unzipped it was a normal PDF (with a password).

I too thank you for the quick response, JE. It’s going to be interesting following the stories thru the books. So far, they are very good.
It is a little funny seeing that even the big haired modern version of Zona was nothing compared to the huge maned original version. ;-)

  28. Latty
    July 7th, 2009 at 11:05 pm

It’s working now but I had to cut and paste the URL, that seemed to be the problem.

    It’s always the simplest thing.

    July 16th, 2009 at 9:15 am

John, thank you very much for the quick response on my email yesterday evening! The two pdfs are really - XXX amazing, let’s say! ;-)
No honestly, I like to have the background story - and I did not consider it to be a (illustrated) solo-RPG. So there is much story of Tula and Zona indeed! I wonder what will be in the comic and what not…

    July 24th, 2009 at 5:24 pm

JED - $15 to you as of 7/24/09. I would make it more, but that’s all I had in the PayPal account.

I’d like to get the Three Challenges of Zona, please.

Leave the Donate button on your site. I have always figured that anything worth reading is worth supporting. I think of it as buying a subscription.
