hahahaahahahaha So she’s a priestess of Moon magick, but clearly she ALSO has skill in EARTH magick.

I thought it was weird she was only casting moon magic when there were TWO goddesses.

So, I’m guessing the green pulse in panel one is a sorta. “Mother Earth welcome me unto your bosom” sorta feather fall spell. And she’s casting from the ground a big old glowing hand of shiney doom spell.

    YA~Y

    JD YOU. ARE. SUCH AWESOME!

I’m not playing against your in literature twister!

I was wondering if there is an actual translation for the words. Does a full alphabet exist or vocabulary?
Oh and Tula is hot as hell…

I sort of hoped (after previous page) for Mentl to end this in a mano-a-mano duel, avenging wounded Tula, but this is waaaay better - Tula getting even on her own :D

    Yay!, in other words :D

And green is really THE color for her :)

    Marvellous work, JD!

VZ, Eroginians don’t ‘get even’ they ‘balance the cha’ it’s not revenge, it’s just returning the favor.

  5. Lictre
    June 23rd, 2009 at 3:10 am

Adam, I agree that she’s ‘balancing the cha’, but for that to happen it has to get evened out. And who KNOWS how out of balance Gorsach has been. He’s likely to need a whole LOT of balancing.

    …Bigby’s Grasping Hand!
I’m really sorry, that was the first thing I thought of upon seeing this. D8
(For anyone confused, it’s a D&D spell that summons a huge, ghostly, green hand to grab a single enemy…)

Awesome page though. I mean, that goes without saying, but it still needs to be said sometimes. I read it with bated breath, and I’m definately on the edge of my seat with this!
You and one other comic have literally had me biting my knuckles hard enough to leave marks out of sheer tension. Great job, as ever.

Moderate time lurker, first time posting.

My prediction: should both our magical combatants survive this night, neither of them is going to be quite as chatty in a fight ever again. Tula got talky and got slammed for it, then Gorsach (sic) made the exact same mistake, monologuing rather than confirming his kill ^_^

I’m of two minds here; on the one hand, Tula deserves a nemesis figure, and to lose our death-eyed Urt priest now after only a couple of fights between them would be sad. On the other hand … nobody in their right mind lets a mad dog live, especially after he’s tried to rip your throat out ^_~ Can’t wait for Friday to see what comes next.

And yeah, I thought of Bigby first thing too.

    Nice to meet you all,

    Loranna

Well, you got to hand it to her!!!!
    Methinks G got overconfident.

    Duuuuuuuude!!!!

Earth magic and Moon magic! G’s not going to get a chance to rescue his henchmen, heck he’s going to be lucky to escape in one piece! hehehe

  13. Ted
    June 23rd, 2009 at 5:36 am

Ooo, Teria-Deia is most definitely Earth Goddess. Good to see Tula getting all grounded! The lightning interaction between the staff and the hand is quite interesting. I wonder if it was an involuntary reaction from being an artifact of Shuarch in contact with Goddess magic? That final frame though, is really superb (especially the shiny, shiny leather). Woot, woot!

  14. vZ
    June 23rd, 2009 at 6:14 am

AdamZero : Of course, but I don’t think in the case of that powerful Urrt leader, cha could be balanced out by killing him only once - it’s not only about Tula and friends, I guess it’s about dozens of Erogenians killed by him and by his order. And in microscale, he definitely wants and acts to kill her, so I don’t think Tula can settle things by anything less definitive than killing him.
So, in her world, that is just a matter of life and death and she is the one that deserves to live by local standards :)
In my world, he just sold her a something that could be deadly blow, so she justs returns the favour with more attention to details and the outcome, and I call it evening things out - and, to be honest, I do not think she thinks about cha at the moment too. He almost killed her, he should be killed for good of all living beings around, so why to wonder about it?

OMG! Great page! :D I like Tula using Earth magick; it shows how well versed she is in the magical arts.

Did anyone else notice the green glow where Tula lands in the first panel? The trail is yellowish, but the landing area is green. Nice detail. 8)

    June 23rd, 2009 at 7:54 am

Okay…now that was impressive…2 geek thoughts here - Like Jason said one of the “Bigby’s Hand” spells ala A&D and Mortal Kombat’s Scorpion - “Get over here!!” =D Also…I thought G would turn tail and try and escape/regroup as soon as the opportunity presented itself…What is interesting is his focus on the plan…G is continuing to impress me as a really well developed villain…Contrasted with Maldik who appears more basic and cruder in his planning…There is an often repeated theme of pride/arrogance leading to a bad outcome…=) JED I really, really liked the last two pages…I had hoped that this wasn’t gonna be a KO in the first round…both of these characters deserved better than that, and you delivered it oh so well…kudos dude!!!

  17. AdamZero
    June 23rd, 2009 at 8:13 am

VZ: dozens? Try hundreds. Gorash is prolly a middle aged urtt, meaning he may be as old as 50 or so. He’s prolly killed, eaten, violated HUNDREDS of humans, Eroginian or not.

  18. AdamZero

Most excellent. Red and green compliment each other so well. The last panel reminds me of that saying “Gosh, you’re really beautiful when you’re angry.” And Tula is shining gorgeous! I see most of us had it wrong about Mentl stepping in to save the day and rightfully so, Tula can definately hold her own. You rock JED.

    LOVE IT!

  23. Hugh
    June 23rd, 2009 at 10:20 am

Now as a smart girl who obviously takes to the air from time to time, the fact that Tula has a feather fall or soft landing spell should come as no surprise. I hate to admit it but the first thing I thought of when I saw the big green hand was Green Lantern. I’ve always thought of the Bigby’s Hands as being blue or silvery, but I would have to go back to my old 1st ed AD&D books to see if a color is specified (yes, I am a geek).

But as others have said, very nicely done JED! Look forward to the next update.

I liked seeing the Poom Poom to let G know that Zona and Mentl were still fighting. I missed them in the page where Zona and Mentl were fighting together. Perhaps you thought they cluttered up the graphics too much, but I think Zona’s expression would have made more sesne if a big ol’ POOM was going off next to her left ear.

It appears Earth magic is less subtle than the magic of the Moon. I note as well that Gorshash is grasped in a left hand, and the glowing hand Tula displays is her right.

OK, Tula, now it’s time for a round of applause for Gorshash’s efforts. Clap your hands briskly …

  27. Cherub
    June 23rd, 2009 at 11:36 am

As I remember it no color is listed for the bigby’s spells (god i’m a geek too) it was also the first thing to come to my mind.

I love this fight keep up the good work.

    June 23rd, 2009 at 11:38 am

Green, green, green. I’ve always associated browns and ochre as representative of the Earth. Flashing back I recall that your manifestation of the Earth goddess incorporated blue(water) and green(vegetation?) as well as the usual earth tones. Seeing as how the earth nurtures the forest and growing things, could the green aura be a reflection of which aspect of the Earth goddess she is channeling? Were she to invoke the water aspect (raise up the rivers etc.) would her aura/energies reflect a darker blue than her light silvery blue lunar spells? You’ve mentioned that she’s still in training, possibly these are not yet a part of her repetoire. ‘Twill be fascinating to see where you will go . . .

I definitely wasn’t expecting that, you are the master of twists.

    June 23rd, 2009 at 12:07 pm

AdamZero - Yup. There’s a good reason why Karna (High Priestess, remember her?) called Tula the most powerful novice she’s seen in forty years. Your guesses are quite correct. The little green “poof” in the trees was Teria refusing to let a daughter get killed. Mind you, she still crashed through the trees and got scraped up pretty good, but the lesson here is *never* count an Erogenian princess out.

calisto - Essentially I’m making it up as I go along, but once I make it up, I try to be consistent. I could translate the whole thing for you, but as Cyrano Jones once said, “If I did that, then what would happen to man’s search for knowledge?” ;) And yes, she is. Ain’t fantaasy grand?

vZ - This is one of the scenes I’ve been itching to get out for months. It was always in the plan for Tula to fight her own battles, especially after playing victim in the dank, vermin-ridden underground stereotypical passages. And yeah, she has no problem taking a little personal satisfaction in balancing things here.

Lictre - As I said above, let’s just understand that she’s not holding back, and part of it is definitely personal. In this situation, Erogenian ethics and personal satisfaction are not mutually exclusive.

Sage - Glad you like it! And sorry - no dance-off this time. ;)

Rocko - Thank you. Fearful? Well, not to give anything away, but you can now look forward to Friday with a bit less fear and a bit more anticipation. heh-heh-heh!

LorannaPyrel - Thanks, your voice is welcome! Frankly, Tula’s only thought at the moment is to squash Gorshash like a bug. Will that happen? Find out Friday.

uhl - Very apt, and not something I had in mind, but a bit of symmetry in the story! Still, it’s the goddess of the Land and Her bitch-slappin’ Hand that has his scaliness in her grip.

Steve - *groan* So, now we know how *handy* it is to have two goddesses. Guess Gorshash needs to get a *grip,* eh?

Balkin - That seems to be the general drift, here, eh? :)

Ted - Teria-Deia, sister goddess to Luna-Deia,indeed. And yes, my intention was to portray the direct contact between the Shuach artifact and the hand of Teria as being like AC vs DC. They do NOT like each other.

Lora - Thank you, thank you! Yes, good eye. Even so, it’s one of those things that looks better in high rez.

Soulworker - As some have mentioned, yes, I knew that Bigby’s Hand was gonna come up. Still, as I was conceiving and writing this, it never crossed my mind. I guess I’m showing my age, but nearer to the mark would have been Apollo’s Hand from “Who Mourns For Adonis?” And I’m glad you like the turn of events. Neither of these two is weak, and they’re alike in more ways than either would ever admit.

Adamzero - Don’t sweat it. The second anyone starts to seriously get to be grammar or spelling police here is when they get booted. (Polite nerdishness is allowed, of course. Like I could stop you all.)

Black Ethel - Keep going? Oh, I’m sorry. See, I need to take a lengthy hiatus due to personal issues. This will, of course, mean that the comic will languish and die for six months or a year until you all just stop coming and none of the story arcs will be finished. Oh, wait! That’s not me. That’s a thousand OTHER web comics! Come back Friday, we’ll be here. ;)

Lady Amber - We should SQUEEEZE it, my Precious! SQUEEZE IT!! ;D

Ga’Tor - Mentl still has his hands full at the moment saving his and Zona’s bacon, and Tula’s quite capable of dishing out a magickal asswhuppin on her own. Green is what Teria is manifesting from the depths of the greenwood at the moment, and your comments on the aspects of the land-magick are interesting, and like all the good feedback I get, fodder for new images. And yes, pissed-off and hot is her. :)

Karyl - Me, Too! You don’t know how long I’ve been wanting to finish this one!

Hugh - It’s not Bigby’s. If it needs a name in English (which it doesn’t have in Erogenia) Call it “Teria’s Awesome Hand Of Bitch-Slappin’!” ;) I made a conscious choice to leave the “poom” out of the previous pages to sort of have an MTV effect there with just the song. That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it!

Latty - And so he is, righteously PWNED.

    Sleepinin - Ya think?

Fatuncle - Damn - I thought it was my *other* right … And I don’t know how subtle Moon Magick is when it blasts holes in things and incinerates Urtt-heads from the inside out. ;)

Ami - Ah, I love being able to do that!! In reality I know I’m not the cleverest writer, but it’s really satisfying to be able to surprise somebody now and again. Thanks!

JED: OMG…I completely forgot that Trek episode….LOL…yes that image fits perfectly as well…Yeah I was wondering about their similarities as well…it isn’t often that you get to see 2 “clerics” duke it out, toe to toe…Both are proud, intelligent, powerful…and utterly dedicated to their respective gods…this has the making of an epic rivalry…

As an aside…I have to compliment the story telling here…I am not sure how you choose to sectionalize your overall story, but if the comments are an indicator, you have been very effective. Personally I like to think of this webcomic as an addiction that I have gladly embraced…lol…and Friday seems far too long for my next “hit”… Regards

  33. Nytsky
    June 23rd, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Yea, now we are talking…. Or “acting” as the case may be. I completely disagree with the thought/wish of Mentl intervening and “saving Tula” (come on guys!!!). Why is it that men insist that women are weak and vulnerable in spite of the evidence at hand {pun intended}. Firstly; Mentl is a brand new, wet behind the ears, struggling with ethical standings, enchanter…… do you really hold the illusion that he could best Gorash? Secondly, although Tula is “still learning” She is the most powerful priestess the Erogenians have seen in ½ a century. Now, Erogenian ethics aside, add to this the fuel that she (personally) was kept prisoner and treated as meat (or worse), and that this creature is responsible for the enslavement and slaughter of countless {free} peoples…… ummm ya! Nough said!

Also, she is using her RIGHT hand (projective): “can you say squish; sure, I knew ya could”……. And so we wait, as is our right, for another peek into the lives of those we have come to care for and admire.

Re: The art, the story, The people, The depth….. as always my friend; amazing.

  34. Hugh
    June 23rd, 2009 at 3:03 pm

Oh, I know it’s not Bigby’s. Like I said, my first thought was Green Latern, but I am pretty sure that that Tula doesn’t have a Power Ring either ;-). That spell has kick-ass range too.

When I first read this page I thought okay, G’s about to high tail it. But then I read the page again, I interpreted G’s words to mean that he was going to go down and kill Zona and Mentl, so Tula is still helping them by keeping the “pressure” on Gorshash.

I am wondering when Gorshash will realize that he is no longer fighting to win, but to survive. Time (and JED) will tell. Looking forward to Friday.

  35. Fatuncle
    June 23rd, 2009 at 6:16 pm

NYTSKY: Well, that makes sense - the right hand shaping and directing the magicks, the left as the template for them.

JED: Sorry, bad choice of words. I was struck by the apparent subtlety in the control and manipulation of the Moon Magick as opposed to the Earth Magick — the difference between a swordswoman and a wrestler. A difference in style, not effect; both martial arts can be used to kill.

  36. Sleepinin
    June 23rd, 2009 at 7:35 pm

I wonder, will Gorhash go SPLAT when he hits the ground, or will he bounce first?

That is, if Tula doesn’t squish him into a tiny evil paste on her giant right hand first….

  37. Mishlady
    June 23rd, 2009 at 8:55 pm

I loved it! Although, it also brings up the point of perhaps Teria-Deia has some plans for her powerful Daughter-rather like Goldmoon in the Dragonlance series. (Goldmoon became a very powerful Cleric of Mishakal and it helped heal the land/peoples and bring back the faith of the gods.) I wouldn’t be surprised that it was a mixture of pfeatherfall on Tula’s part and her Goddess helping. I mean, one doesn’t learn to cast powerful magicks high in the air without learning what to do if you lose control of the “hovering” spell and get knocked to the ground.

Also, there could be different aspects of Earth magick that JD would want to work with. Green for forests/jungles, tan/browns for prairies/plains/savannas, blue for the rivers/lakes/oceans.

I might also point out that Mercedes Lackey, in her Elemental Magics novels, has different creatures that Wizards work with and are specific to a region. For example, there are water sprites everywhere in the water, but only Selkies and the Kraken are found in the ocean. Fire salamanders for the Fire Masters, Air sprites for the Air Masters…there might be something lurking waiting for the right time to appear for Tula. Who knows.

    @Jason,

You just HAD to remind me of this old filk song, didn’t you?

A Mage once lost his glasses as he explored an unknown cave,
He was travelling with a Cleric and a Paladin bold and brave!
They met with Gnolls, he studied his scrolls, he blurrily pointed his stave,
The Cleric he was blown away, the Paladin managed to save!

The mage then lost his glasses as he journeyed a sinister land,
He was with the versed paladin, and a mighty dwarvish band!
They met with trolls, he grabbed his scrolls, the word he tried to scan,
The Paladin spent the battle fighting “Bigby’s Crushing Hand!

The Mage then lost his glasses as the dwarves followed a stream,
He tried to avoid the paladin, whose eye held a deadly gleam!
They saw Uruk Hai, he squinted an eye, he tried to read the spell,
They knew he was in trouble when the paladin blipped to hell.

The mage then dropped his glasses as he climbed a rather steep hill,
He was being chased by the paladin, who swore the mage to kill!
He grabbed his book, attempting to look, and shout a particular cry,
The paladin soon lost him as he polymorphed to a fly.

The mage was without his glasses as he walked a lonely street,
he was challenged by the paladin, who said ‘at last we meet!’
Paladin laughed in derision, for he knew the mage’s vision,
as the mage grabbed a scroll in defense,
The Paladin was blown away, for the mage wore a contact lens!

Hoo boy. I must add my voice to the “Tula is HOT!”- choir. This battlescene is the best yet.

Matti - Well, a few scratches. Falling through the canopy of a forest will do that to ya.

Soulworker - Thanks - I do try. I’m really a simple fellow at heart, and all I want is to make an entertaining story. With girls that have big boobs. And lots of violence and magic and stuff. As long as it isn’t downright stupid, I feel I’ve met my goal. :)

Nytsky - Yup. And it gets even better, just wait. Hope you’re feeling better yourself! Give an email if you feel like it!

Hugh - Power rings rock. All I have to say on the subject. :)

    Fatuncle - no problem, I understand. ;)

Sleepinin - LOL “The wonderful thing about Gorshsh, it’s surely a wonderful thing! Their tops are made outta rubbah, their bottoms are made outta srping … :) ”

LocalYokel - Remember Screwy Squirrel in “Lonesome Lenny?” “Gee, I wish I had a friend! I would love him and squeeze him and pet him and hug him. I had a friend, once — but he don’t move no more!”

Elfguy - It may be an old one to you, but it’s new to me! :D

kern - wound up doing extra work for Irwin Allen on “Land Of The Giants ..” http://www.landofthegiants-tv.co.uk/cast7a.jpg

Hipponerdamus - Well, it does look like someone’s given him the finger, doesn’t it?

Acipenser - Thanks! Liking it, myself, ackshully! And I will take a wee bow for the way this is turning out. I do have the luxury of having lots of time to write and rewrite the arc. That lets me toss the crap that “seemed like a good idea at the time.”

Adamzero - Okay, THAT’s not gonna happen! Just so you know. (Okay, well, it won’t happen on screen, anyway …)

Great inner dialogue in this one! I really like when we get inside Gorash’s head. I kind of want to study him and his humanoid predator thoughts just like he wants to study humans. Maybe that would be a good vote incentive sometime.

I also really applaud the dynamic flying that happens on this page. No more of that stiff ballet-dancer look! Every one of these panels is too cool for words.
