    oh no.

Quick! Sing “He’s a Maniac!” Make him dance to death!

…I’m not too surprised to be honest. Rule of thumb seems to be, underestimation leads to ass-whooping.
I hope it works out for Tula though. Somehow. I’m guessing Mentl to the rescue, personally, although I’m not sure how. I shall just have to wait (with baited breath!) to find out.

…I managed to convince myself yesterday was Friday, and checked for an update about six times through-out the day before clicking. The worst part is that this morning, I was thinking to myself, “he should have updated by now, right?” before remembering.

I could say I called this, if I didn’t hated to be right on this one.

“G” is the only bad guy up to now who can actually think and pose a serious thread, it would be bad for storyline purposes for him to be permanently defeated here.

But still: MENTL KILL THAT SOB RIGHT NOW!!!!!
then save Tula with a song, I’m thinking “Sexual Healing” by Marvin Gaye ;p

  5. Hipponerdamus
    June 19th, 2009 at 5:22 am

I believe it was Mr. Mister….

    Take these broken wings
    and learn to fly again
learn to live and love so free…

Not sure much more than that, but it would seem to work.

  6. Balkin
    June 19th, 2009 at 5:51 am

Not exactly what I was expecting.

I wanted Tula to kick his butt. I expected some kind of stalemate. Heh. She’s falling to far for Zona to just catch her, so yeah. Mentl better be fast on the draw!

  7. Lora
    June 19th, 2009 at 6:07 am

I’m counting on either Mentl coming to the recuse or Tula pulling it together in time to catch herself.

At any rate there can’t be many of Gorshash’s people left on the ground…

  8. Leibowitz
    June 19th, 2009 at 6:35 am

Wow, death looks out of his eye…

  9. The Macnut
    June 19th, 2009 at 6:40 am

Not. Good. Not the one I expected to be crashing to the ground. This is a major turn in the battle for the worse.

  10. Debi
    June 19th, 2009 at 6:45 am

    Parachute!

  11. Steve
    June 19th, 2009 at 6:48 am

    Oooops

Looks like it might be time for Mentl to step in and cover Tula. Something with a bit more kick than shotgun (anyone know a song about an 88mm self-propelled gun?)

  12. demas
    June 19th, 2009 at 7:16 am

hmm, Mentyl could try his hand at Armalite rifle by the Gang of four. Definite stopping power there, or if saving Tula becomes a necessity he could do worse that try some mellow aussie rock such as Wings of an eagle by Russell Morris. Mind you, I’m expecting another plot twist myself.. Damn I love this comic!

  13. FireFae
    June 19th, 2009 at 7:28 am

    Mentl! Zona! LOOK UP!

  14. wysiwyg
    June 19th, 2009 at 8:26 am

I suppose “Red” by Combichrist isn’t exactly Mentl’s style.

“Gonna paint this town red!!!” :-p

  15. Lebbrin
    June 19th, 2009 at 8:36 am

Wow, wow, WOW! Another page that’s going to have me punching F5 at midnight on Monday hoping for an early update.

Tula forgot the number one rule when fighting the boss. Once you’ve successfully gotten him/her to monologue, you hit him with everything BEFORE he/she finished talking. She shouldn’t have let him finish. Then again, we wouldn’t have Tula falling out of the sky and we wouldn’t be desining our own time-machines to take a peek at Tuesday.

    Great work JED, as always.

Time for “war Pigs.” Just do the whole continent.

  17. Black Ethel

    Oh…sh*t! :-(

  18. Ami
    June 19th, 2009 at 10:19 am

A temporary flashback to the Mentl shield spell discussion; Can’t Touch This (yeah, that one…) would be a strange mix of awesome and hilarious. Just saying…

I’m used to the enemy’s monologue ending well for the hero, so you put an excellent twist on it. One that will have me repeatedly prodding the refresh button late Monday night.

  19. Hugh
    June 19th, 2009 at 10:24 am

I kinda doubt that Mentl has been thinking up a “feather-fall” song, but JED is full of surprises. I think Tula will either soften her own fall or that Zona will catch her. I am hoping that G’s battle with Tula has cost him some serious strength, and that he looks down, sees a pile of dead Urts surrounding a pissed off Zona/Mentl and decides to flee the scene.

But we will see where JED takes us with the next update. As I have said before, awesome story JED!

The ground fighters have by this time made a nice and soft pile of corpses upon which Tula can land.

  21. Fatuncle
    June 19th, 2009 at 11:25 am

Hah! So far, I have kept my perfect record - five out of five wrong guesses!

  22. Balkin
    June 19th, 2009 at 11:36 am

Can I just add that the last panel, with Tula falling out of the sky is freakin awesome! Spell effects trailing after her, mountains in the background…

She doesn’t appear out of it, just needs to reorient herself. G’s attack dispelled everything she had going. The question is, will he push his attack, or will he see what’s happened on the ground and retreat to try again another day?

I can see him continuing his attack, and walking into an assault from Mentl and being driven off… Guess we’ll wait till Tuesday… Somehow…

  23. hans

She does talk too much ..

  24. Jun
    June 19th, 2009 at 1:48 pm

“weapon of choice” - fatboy slim.
Flight, your weapon of choice and an awesome song? Hells yes.

“God is a bullet” - concrete blonde
    This might be overkill.

“seven nation army” - The White Stripes
Would probably make Mentl lose his powers if sung in it’s entirety. But parts of it would turn him into a juggernaut.

“Running down a dream” - for dreamwalking and tracking wizards on the astral plane maby?

  25. SamuraiDemonPuppy
    June 19th, 2009 at 2:41 pm

Well, well. HE’s monologuing to get HER guard down. She just thought he’d wait to shoot until he’d finished shooting his yap. Bad move, Tula. Like the others before me said, she should have just blasted him while he talked like in “The Incredibles” (”And then he starts Monologuing…”)

  26. Tricksterson
    June 19th, 2009 at 3:41 pm

Okay, I think first priority here isn’t taking out Gorshash (sp?), it’s saving Tula. If that means G gets away fine. Mend these broken wings would do good for a healing spell but for some reason “Freebird” comes to mind, either making her fly or (Rule of Unintended Consequences, Dad’s favorite, could come into play here) turning her into a bird. keep in mind that Mentl will be thinking on the fly here and his subconcious might be doing the choosing. On the other hand Tula might have enough magic left to save herself. After all, “Feather Fall” is a low level spell :D

  27. Kamatu
    June 19th, 2009 at 3:44 pm

When Zona complains Tula is talking too much, Zona strikes. When Tula complains that Gorshash is talking too much………

She thinks about it. Lesson to learn for Tula.

    AdamZero - Oh, yes. muah-hahahahahahh!!!

Sage - You really want these suckers to dance, dontcha? LOL

Jason - Yep, well - they’re all young and cocky, ain’t they? Sorry about your sense of time and all the lost time, there. Get a free calendar, or I’ll find out how to do an RSS feed with SoulGeek or something.

JustMe - And you’re one who wants to see something hot between Mentl and Tula, huh? ;) Been suggested before, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Hipponerdamus - It was also Paul McCartney: “Black Bird, take these broken wings and learn to fly …”

Balkin - Oh, I’m sure someone will think of something - or not.

Lora - Well, there certainly were a lot of them, weren’t there?

Liebowitz - Death, or more accurately Shuach, whose personification seems to be the skull.

Macnut - Yeah, it’s one of those moments that she’s just gonna kick herself for … probably. Maybe. I mean, definitely it’s a good possibility that she’ll live to kick herself. Or not. :)

Debi - And yeah, she’s just kicking herself for forgetting to pack it!

Steve - Seriously, I don’t think there is one. If so, it might be fun, but then there is always the possibility of collateral damage.

demas - I’m taking notes … ;) But I dunno. I’m really *not* that clever of a writer. We’ll see if you think what I come up with is “twisty” or “trite.” I can definitely be both!

FireFae - And you think they would, huh? Tch! People! They get in volved with one life-and-death struggle and they just lose track of everything else.

wysiwyg - Paint the town red? I don’t know - think of what happens when she puts “your red dress on …”

Lebbrin - Thanks, pal! But, yeah … imagine that she never studied comic book tropes like that! All those books she’s read and not one by Stan Lee …

Pending - Okay, great. Another one I have to look up … :)

Black Ethel - As Cosby said, “First you say it — then you DO it!” :)

Ami - Do you follow “Sheldon?” All I can think of these days is a strip a few months ago where Flaco the chameleon just struts through the panels in a pair of those signature pants Hammer wears dointg a take on “Can’t Touch This.” Fah-reaking hilarious! I LOVE Sheldon! Wait! I found it!

    http://www.sheldoncomics.com/archive/090110.html

Hugh - Glad you’re enjoying the ride. On Tuesday you will finally see the end-game of this little encounter.

    Stig Hemmer - Now THAT’s a thought!!

Fatuncle - As long as you’re enjoying being surprised, it’s fine by me!

Balkin - Yeah, actually, that’s one of those neat pictures that actually comes out more or less like I saw it in my head. Yep. Tuesday we begin to wrap this up, for better or worse.

hans - She’s an intellectual, waddaya want? She really does represent my smarter side, the one that’s wiser, calmer and more objective. That side also is a bit long-winded, too, but nobody’s perfect. :)

    Jun - Scribble-scribble …

SamuraiDemonPuppy - She never saw the movie. I think she’d like it. :) But give her a little credit: She’s got all her wards up, she’s strong and on-guard. He seems to have let loose with something really powerful that crashed through everything.

Tricksterson - Ooo … lemme take that down …

Kamatu - They’re very different people, and both still have a lot to learn. :)

If you use one of my ideas I will do a Happy Troll Dance (and if you want to know what that looks like, imagine Vulcan’s attempt to “dance” from the “Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen” only to a faster beat);P

    @ JED
What can I say, I prefer Brunettes + a girl who’s body abides by the laws of physics;p. (note: Not taking flying and casting kickass magic into account)

  39. Tricksterson
    June 20th, 2009 at 7:12 am

Elfguy, I like the “Stairway to Heaven” idea. I’m picturing a silvery, ethereal looking construct, although considering she’s falling he might want to make it a slideway. ;D

  40. Uhl
    June 20th, 2009 at 7:32 am

Personally, what comes to mind is “4,3,2,1 Earth below us. Drifting! Falling!” Tula, underestimating bad guys is becoming a real bad habit for you.

  41. Nytsky
    June 20th, 2009 at 12:09 pm

Ok John you are killing me with this last panel! AAwwwwkkkkkkk! *rubbing face with hands*; I hate waiting! I have been out of commission (foot surgery, just call me “peg”) for a while and am just now catching up! Gotta say…. Fabulous work. That last panel with Tula falling is just beautiful! BUT….. she IS going to make it right? And kick some green ass to boot? Gods! I hope so! This “is” torture, you know this don’t you?

  42. Someguy
    June 20th, 2009 at 12:16 pm

Awesome page, just awesome. The art as scaly(can’t believe I’ve already forgotten the name T_T) goes into inferno mode is just so badass. I don’t know if Shauch is supposed to be looking out of his eye socket or whatever but the effect is very satisfying. Makes a lot of sense to me that Gorshash (Hah! I remembered) would have some seriously powerful mojo being one of the major high priesty people of his race. It also makes me curious how much like the current, uh darn it now I can’t remember the name of the race, snakey people are like the ancient erogenians. How much of what the are now comes from them and how much comes from the influence of Shuach. I like to ponder such things. : )

  43. Jim Farris
    June 20th, 2009 at 11:01 pm

Alright, I’ve had some time to think about it.

And I still think Tula should have kicked his ass.

The artwork on this page is beatiful, yes. Particularly the fall image.

But I STILL think Tula should have won and G should have had to limp off and lick his wounds.

  44. Sahdowwarrior

I normally just lurk and read these web comics, but this is one of the very very few I really have gotten hooked on. So you have me hooked here as bad as the rest… ;p :D

I love this, Mentl is a lot like the main character of a Fanfic I like ( http://www.eclipse.net/~rms/dw2.shtml ) this guy uses songs to activated ‘Meta’ powers (Super powers). Here are some I remember right off hand:
    1) I’m Alive - healing (even heals him from a mortal wound at the end).
    2) Lightening Hand - melee and ranged electrical / lightening attack and ‘Sait Elmo’s Fire armor).
    3) Supersonic man - Multi-mach flight, no inertia, and he and what he is carrying is protected from the speed.
    4) Pinball Wizard - magic pinball game where the enemy are the targets for points…
    5) Black hole sun - ability to use black holes for defense and a short ranged attack…
and many more… if you want I can review the story and send you the list…

Shadowwarrior, I live in the shadows but I protect those in need.

If I Had A Rocket Launcher by Bruce Cockburn

You have to browse through 30-40 comics or more before you find one as good as Zona. JED ya bastich, made me blow my entire morning reading your magificent work of art from the beginning (but worth it). Don’t know if Mentl knows any filk songs but The March of Cambreadth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PJKoTgPOt0 is a hell of a battlesong. As for Tula’s current problem how about CCR’s ‘Bad Moon Rising? Not only should it levitate and power her up, but the earthquake and lightning bit should allow him to mop up any left over Urrts. Too much maybe? Powerful song.

  48. Sage
    June 22nd, 2009 at 6:31 pm

Well of course I wanna see the suckers dance. Imagine the comedic value of the battle ending in an honest-to-god dance-off?

  49. BetterThanLife
    June 22nd, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Looks like with Tula out of the air, it is time for some Triple A. Or perhaps it is time for G to be “Thunderstruck.”

  50. Elfguy
    June 22nd, 2009 at 6:49 pm

    @Ga’Tor

Hey, if we’re talking Filk, Mentyl could clean the floor with ALL of em with Ookla The Mok’s “Super Powers” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ika_btPqUHY )

  51. Sarge
    March 7th, 2010 at 4:52 pm

Tula hasn’t hit the ground yet, guys…

Ya ever heard of a Strategic Fallback To A Prepared Position? AKA a feigned “Rout” — until the pursuing enemy is suckered into the trap…
