Love the effects in this one, particularly in the last panel. The electricity lighting up his teeth is pretty sweet.
Your work is good stuff. Keep it up.
June 17th, 2009 at 12:06 am
I’d like to redeclare my position as Tula’s number one fan. Among the many reasons, this one has jumped into the top five.
BADASS ASS MAGICK.
nuff said, and worth the wait.
June 17th, 2009 at 12:07 am
“Has great scenes - GREAT poses” Understatement of the YEAR !!!!! You have outdone yourself again.
June 17th, 2009 at 12:48 am
Yep, G broke one of the larger rules. When you go double or nothing, make sure the odds are in your favor.
June 17th, 2009 at 2:01 am
Annnnnd you can stick a fork in G, ’cause it looks like he’s done.
Or IS he? Guess we’ll find out next page….unless JE torments us by going back to the ground battle.
June 17th, 2009 at 2:06 am
A cool way to do it would be, first few panels goes back to Mentl and Zona, still snuffin’ Urrts like candles, all of us going “ARRRGGGHHH, DAMN YOU JE!!”
…and cut to the last panel of a flaming, smoking Gorshash hitting the ground hard, maybe right next to Mentl who’s going WTF????
Or did I just ruin your plans for next page, JE?
June 17th, 2009 at 2:30 am
And here I thought you said that G was gonna bring out the big artillery…
… does this include himself being fire up like a roman candle?
If that is his plan… He just suceeded nicely.
June 17th, 2009 at 3:21 am
Niiice!
I hope after this, you found the damn save hotkey for Poser.
June 17th, 2009 at 4:06 am
Love the central panel, though if anything the SHH-KOWMM is superfluous. Something tells me that G is not going to be a happy bunny after this - unless Tula goes in for shape changing magic of course!
JE? Why you looking at me like that JE? Sorry JE !
June 17th, 2009 at 5:21 am
That middle panel… it almost looks like they have soared all the way into space and are fighting there. Or in a magical extra dimission.
Very cool. Tula is alight with moonlight and magick. And Gorshash is fried.
June 17th, 2009 at 5:24 am
Oberoten - I suspect G just tried with the heavy artillery. Or at least, the heaviest he has to mind right now.
I wanna see the rest of the henchmen gather to rush M&Z, only to have G crash to the ground behind them - then have the pair ask in unionism ‘Who’s next’?
June 17th, 2009 at 5:41 am
TOTALLY worth the wait!
I think G’s going to drop like a stone, but recover quickly enough to dart away and escape… His cronies on the other hand… Yeah…
June 17th, 2009 at 6:49 am
Ya know, a few posts ago I commented/complemented you on the physical likenesses between Zona and Tula. It is also striking to me in this panel that each is a particular “bad-ass” within their own combat domain…Now throw in Mentl with the “wild-card” factor…and you have quite a powerful little adventuring group…Am also with AdamZero on this one…it is awesome to see Tula unleashed (repeating mantra…”I am happily married and she is a web character…let it go…”) =D
June 17th, 2009 at 7:00 am
Hmm, the ol’ classic of “My god can whup your god any day”
I am thinking Zona and Mentl are sitting on the grass, surrounded by two well fed cats and numerous body parts.. going “OOhhhh”, “Ahhhhh” at the light show above… (Now how Mentl got the popcorn is beyond me…)
June 17th, 2009 at 7:04 am
It’s all fun and games until somebody loses an eye…
June 17th, 2009 at 8:12 am
Something I don’t get: why they spend mana (or whatever JED likes to call it) for levitation (or whatever JED likes to call it)? Did they really want 1-on-1 duel THAT bad?
What’s next? Gorshash got beating, but may still have strength to get the Hell out. How does he get the opportunity? Are his minions enough to cause so much trouble for Zona & Mentl that Tula has to go for help before she can finish off Gorshash?
June 17th, 2009 at 8:36 am
Way cool! And, BTW, nice save on the comic, JED.

June 17th, 2009 at 9:23 am
Full. Of. Awesome!
June 17th, 2009 at 9:26 am
Matti, for casters, the biggest problems are melee fighters who sneak up and try and shank you, (note the one of Mentl’s first kills in the battle. Actually… that IS his first real in battle kill!) anyway, After Gorash saw Mentl was packing death blasts, that seem to lack any material appearance between source and impact, he realized he needed to get out of the line of fire before Mentl saw a chance to blast him one.
June 17th, 2009 at 9:42 am
Speedhump, thanks, I have visions of Mentl and Zona watching fireworks. That one made me laugh out loud. That might make a great one-off if JED ever gets some spare time.
JE, yet again another incredible page. Keep up the great work. And don’t worry about the Poser crash, we’ve all been there and it was worth the wait. (Just find the save hot-key.)
June 17th, 2009 at 10:04 am
WORTH.
THE.
WAIT.
Not sure the huge “SHH-KOWMM!!” works though to be honest. The panel’s incredible, I’m just not sure the writing was necessary. >.>
That would make a great wide-screen desktop though. I’d love to see that full-size. *hint hint*
June 17th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
well, what sort of sound DOES the clashing of vast energies sound like?
Don’t cross the streams, man.
June 17th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
As for fighting in space….
(Singing) Ground control to major Tom….
June 17th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Dromin - Thanks, so much! That bit is actually a several-step process which came out pretty coolio, I agree.
AdamZero - So, this is a request for more of Tula in the Hot Stuff Gallery, eh?
JoeKisonhew - So glad you liked it! Thanks, and it’s not over, yet!
Oberoten - Only Gorshash and I know what his plan was or is - And sometimes, it’s a surprise to me!
hans - Thanks, and yes, I am saving religiously.
Steve - We shall see, we shall see. Gorshash, in general, is not a happy bunny, period. He is not fluffy. He is not cuddly. And he has a major mad-on.
Lora - A little stylistic license on the background, intended to reflect the spectra of the energies that the two are flashing against the clouds. I especially like the nice sharp contrast with the red BG clouds against Gorshash’s robe …
Kern - Not sure that’s how it’s going to go. On Friday you will see the next step in this lengthy battle scene(s)
Balkin - On Friday you’ll see how close your “think” was to the real story …
Soulworker - Yes, well, being CGI and fictional never stopped guys from lusting after Lara Croft, so don’t feel too bad. Another vote for a new Tula pinup … okay.
Speedhump - Wish I had time to do little vignettes like that … it made me laugh!
JFargo - LOL!!! Seriously, I really laughed out loud when I read that. Clever!
Matti - Answer, yes, they did. With the forces that they wanted/needed to unleash, neither of them wanted to start a forest fire that would incinerate their allies, and in Gorshash’s case he still has a plan that requires Zona’s body to be undisputedly recognizable. Tula also wanted to draw him away from the fight so that Mentl and Zona could take care of the Urrt hunters, etc without Gorshash’s interference and Gorshash was similarly interested in eliminating Tula from the fight. He also wants her guts for sausage stuffing, and that added to his motivation.
In the final analysis, it JUST LOOKS FRIGGING COOL! Never discount that, as long as there is an acceptable rationalization.
Black Ethel - (takes a bow) Thank you, m’dear.
Tricksterson - Well, I’ve been told I’m full of something, but not “awesome.” This is a nice change, thanks!
Lebbrin - Thanks, I have learned my lesson!
Jason - Glad you enjoyed - and now, to see what the result of that last spell was, eh?
Elfguy - Okay, important safety tip.
Okay, okay! Ungrateful mortals! You do not appreciate the “Sh-KOWMM!” See if you ever get a “Sh-Kowmm!” in your Yaksmas Day sink foam! grumble, grumble, mutter, mutter …
Jim Farris - Seemingly, seemingly …
MacNut - Who, me, switch back and forth to another scene just as things reach a climax? Okay, if you insist …
June 17th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
Speedhump, maybe THIS is how he would get popcorn?

@JED - RE: Sk-KOWMM!
No objections here. Do the sounds you hear in your head when you’re working on the story, man.
June 17th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
Hipponerdamus - This. Is. Funny.
Jim Farris - Y’know, I was iffy about it from the beginning, but I decided to put it in, anyway. I actually like it better without, now I’ve re-done it.
I still hear “SH-KOWWWMM!!” in my head, tho …
June 18th, 2009 at 12:32 am
(Sing to the tune of “Hakuna Matatta” from The Lion King:
Cthulhu Ftaghn! What a wonderful phrase!
Cthulhu Ftaghn! Say it and you’re crazed!
It means Cthulhu, rising up from the waves!
It’s a Prophecy, we’ll all soon see…Cthulhu Ftaghn!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:57 am
I’m not sure it would be a good idea to call cthulhu forth… that’s one badass monster. >:)
June 18th, 2009 at 7:25 am
Hmm, so far this magixfight seems slightly in Tula´s favour. She deflected all his attacks and scored a hit on her first direct attack. Wonder when the direct energy approach will be abandoned in favor of a more backstabbing one(entity conjuring?). And by whom?
Also I hope this whole encounter doesn´t drag on too much longer. Are we about halfway through by now?
June 18th, 2009 at 9:51 am
He has got an out, I think JED as let us know that we will be meeting G again. I don’t think he is actually out of the fight if it was just 1v1, but with the twain time going on below, I think G lost his backup and so will retire.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:19 am
I never thought of that - that the source of Tula’s power is inherently stronger than Gorshash’s source. But that was stated clearly from the beginning, wasn’t it? – Gorshash’s god was defeated and exiled / imprisoned millennia ago. I guess I just fixated on Gorshash being the baddest badass around because he won the first fall of this wrestling match, and frankly, looked the part. But our team won the second, didn’t they? In the heart of his place of power, they broke Gorshash’s wards – and no few of his minions –and escaped.
Now it comes down to who’s the best practitioner. Tula formally trained, and if the back-story hinted at is true, combat tested — Gorshash self-taught, more practiced at treachery and less at open combat with someone his equal; the battle out in the open sky under the symbol of Tula’s goddess, the Moon … you know, Gorshash is in trouble. He’s a bandit chieftain that’s been lording it over terrified local civilians and militia trying to take down professional warriors for the first time.
It’s not going well.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:19 am
One of G’s major tatical flaws is that he has consistently underestimated his opposition, which is actually fairly understandable. I mean, I am sure I was not the only person who was surprised when Zona threw that tree into the air (which made her breaking those chains a lot more believable so I am glad we saw that). And of course, this is the first time that anyone besides Tula and Zona have seen what Mentle can do, so that was bound to be a surprise as well. As Tula has pointed out, Gorshah has also consistently underestimated Tula. But I am a bit concerned that Tula is now making the sdame mistake with respect to Gorshash.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Fatuncle - it may be true that Shuach is inherently less powerful, but I don’t think you can take Tula’s word on that - she is inherently biased. Second, Tula misstates things a bit when she says that her goddess imprisoned Shuach since it was really the moon goddess AND the earth goddess who defeated Suach , and that’s a bit different from just the moon goddess.
Second, even if Shuach is constrained by his imprisonment (and he is obviously not fully constrained since he still has unholy ground that negates the moon goddess’s magic and is obviously giving some power magic to Gorshash), if Gorshash is his ONLY priest, he may be giving more power to G than Tula is getting from the Moon Goddess, who presumably has multiple priestesses out there. I honestly doubt if JED’s magic system is that mathematical, but I don’t think we can afford to count G out yet.
And finally, Mentl himself proves that magic is not all god-driven. It is possible that either Tula or Gorshash (or both) might be using some of their own power and skill to prevail.
June 18th, 2009 at 10:33 am
Girl’s got game.
June 18th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
I just realised, second panel, Gorshash definately looks… Concerned.
Or is that just me?
Also, Hugh, Tula says her “goddessES” imprisoned Shauch, so she is referring to the both of them putting Shuach away. Although that doesn’t necessary mean she can call on the powers of them both- I’m more than a mite fuzzy on that point. I believe we’ve only seen her call on the Moon Goddess. *shrug*
We will just have to wait and see what JE has planned.
June 18th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
Jason, I just noticed the “es” as well. I think you are right on the second panel. Even more telling is the last panel where G’s spell casting gets interrupted - almost never good for a spell slinger. But I agree and am looking forward to see what JE will do next.
June 18th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
Maybe Shuach has escaped his prison? Or at least torn a hole in it? G may be working with toys, or he may not. OR, he is just an underling to the real bad guy who we have yet to be introduced to.
June 18th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
@Lora: Who says it would be Mentyl singing that? Bwahahaha!
June 19th, 2009 at 12:45 am
Yes, JD it is. Maybe something with lace?
June 19th, 2009 at 1:28 am
Well Hugh, I think you might be wrong when you say that Mentl’s power isn’t derived from a god. The songs he invokes are creations of rock (demi-?)gods who have large numbers of devoted/adoring followers. Perhaps JED’s implying that that would make them gods in Mentl’s home world if magic where possible in it, but that it turns into power when crossing into Zona and Tula’s world.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:03 am
Elfguy: I never said it would be Mentl singing…
But either way it’s a bad idea.
June 19th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
On the Godesses question I would say that in a sense all the gods and goddesses folowed by the Erogenians are Tula’s. In another sense the Moon Goddess is her god in a very personal way. It’s like all your family is your family but some are closer than others.
As for “the gods of rock” maybe, maybe not but there must certainly be a god/godess of Music, if not in this universe than outside it (leading to the question is the Erogenian Moon Goddess the same as say the Greek Diana? Are deities limited to one universe or do the just have different names in different places?) If there isn’t a Music God in this universe maybe he is using Mentl as his/her entry into it. In which case Mentl will be the beneficiary of a WHOLE LOT of potential power.
Just some thoughts.
