I can’t help but let out a little cackle at this page, especially the last three panels. Awesome work as usual.
June 5th, 2009 at 2:04 am
Mentl riding “shotgun”.
Love it.
June 5th, 2009 at 2:35 am
Heh, yep, he’s certainly doing a bang-up (pun intended) job of covering the ladies’ backs. AND getting some well-earned payback as a bonus…
June 5th, 2009 at 2:55 am
The Urtts - they brought knives (or clubs) to a gunfight. Their own fault, eh?
Sure, they didn’t know it was a gunfight, or even what a gun is. (Or are there guns in Zona’s world?) But still - never bring a knife to a gunfight.
In short - go Mentl!
June 5th, 2009 at 5:03 am
Knives CAN beat guns, but Urts aint ninjas!
June 5th, 2009 at 5:19 am
Hi all, been lurking for a while and thought I’d post. I just want to say that I think the entire comic is truly fantastic. On this issue I am particularly taken by that wisp of smoke on the final panel. The subtle details throughout this comic make it even more worthwhile than the great plot and characters.
Following on from the suggesting songs and musing on their effects, there have been three that jangled through my head.
1. What on earth would happen if Mentl sang Marilyn Manson’s ‘When I’m God Everybody Dies’? Do mysticks aspire to god-heads? the short cut to divinity could be more worrying than the mass-killing spree that would immediately follow, and I guess Zona and Tula wouldn’t survive either so scratch that plan.
2. The line from Nine Inch Nails the perfect drug ‘Turn out the sun, pluck the stars from the sky’ if they need darkness for a quick getaway - and to destroy the solar-system if not the galaxy (?galaxies, how many are visible to the naked eye there?)
3. I can’t remember the name of the song, but it’s on Sid Barret’s album The Mad-cap Laughs, and the line goes ‘trip, drip to a dream-dragon, hide your wings in a ghost tower’… I’m guessing if he needs to get somewhere in a hurry (or more big guns for a fight) the first half could summon a dragon from his imagination?? the second half could probably put it back hiding again, or pluck the wings from a dragon attacking them, causing it to fall from the sky…
OK, I’m wittering now, all the best and once again i’m desperately awaiting tuesday
and, Acipenser, at least they didn’t bring an octopus…
June 5th, 2009 at 6:06 am
Impressive, Mentl. Keep it up, your girlfriend is surrounded by bad guys who would like nothing better than to turn her into neat cuts of steak.
June 5th, 2009 at 6:34 am
Heh, knives can only beat guns, if you can get close enough. Somehow I don’t think the urrts can do that.
I like the ‘pistol smoke’ coming from Mentl’s hand in the last frame.
June 5th, 2009 at 6:38 am
You can tell from that last panel that they finally managed to make Mentl really, really mad. I was missing Zona in all these pages and this is a refreshing look at her prowess. Great page as usual.
June 5th, 2009 at 7:13 am
I wonder how many footsoldiers G brought with him - looks like they are being thinned rapidly! I still reckon G will beat a retreat once he realises that he’s getting lonely. I also think that Mentl will need to come up with other spells, a shotgun is all well and good, but sometimes you’d need a rifle, or some sort of machine gun, and also some sort of shield or protection - there’s a way to go yet!
June 5th, 2009 at 7:41 am
Nice…just nice…you knew that there were some other surprises in store for them…G is nothing if not efficient…might have worked too, but he had no way to factor in Mentl…still doesn’t actually… =D I wonder what instrumental music would do for Mentl? No words, but plenty of emotions and could lend itself to him having more/less control over the effect…Just a thought…
June 5th, 2009 at 10:43 am
Hm. Fifth panel looks like it needs a POOMM!
Have the baddies run out of ogres and gargle-hounds by now?
Yes, Gorshie may see he’s outmatched and run, but someone knows a “Shoot ‘im ‘fore he runs” spell, so he won’t be unscathed…well, he’ll be even *less* unscathed. Scathe ‘im ‘fore he runs, Mentl!
The “Be very afraid” lighting on M rocks.
June 5th, 2009 at 10:57 am
I’ve been at a loss for words lately. Just F-ing awesome. Keep up the good work.
June 5th, 2009 at 11:34 am
Hmm, I just wondered how ‘Frozen’ (here by Within Temptation) would work for Mentl… don’t know if he would know it though, since it belongs in the symphonic metal genre.
‘Don’t stop me now’ by Queen might be better.(He could fly with that one I think. Though ‘Walking in the air’ would be even better). ‘The Invisible Man’ could be very funny and good for sneaking - if he can learn to sing very quietly.
And Alice Coopers ‘I’m your gun’ or ‘Poison’ could do interesting things, too.
June 5th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Ooooh, or Angels by WT. “I see the Angels, I’ll lead them to your door. There’s no escape now, no mercy no more.” Mentl calling up vengeance divine intervention style would be pretty freakin’ awesome. Then again, I love just about all symphonic metal so it’s hard to go wrong.
I just have to say how incredibly awesome the last two panels are. The blood splatter looks amazing and that wisp of smoke is a perfect touch. Love it.
June 5th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
This is so much fun! Just to nit-pick, it might have been better/sillier if Mentl put his hands in the thumb/index gun shape. Pow pow!
June 5th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
Well, that would be a pistol, not a shotgun… and one shouldn’t bring a pistol to a shotgun fight!
I imagine there’s limits to what Mentl can accomplish even with the right words, and that he might soon get a physical demonstration of his current limits. Besides, he just doesn’t seem to be the Marilyn Manson type. I doubt he’d contemplate anything worse than, say, the average heavy metal lyric.
June 5th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Damm what an image the last scene was. Dude got his head blown off..great art work.
June 5th, 2009 at 7:08 pm
Wolfgang - I cackled a bit as I conceived it. Heh. Thanks!
hans - Oh, yeah - and the song’s not over.
MacNut - *groan*
Acipenser - Actually, they brought knives, guns, two kinds of monsters and overkill - but Mentl is just the right monkeywrench right now …
Uhl - Are you kidding? These are the best Red Shirt - er - Urtts that money can buy!
OddCodicologist - Thanks so much for the kind words! I do not care for Marilyn Manson, but that’s because of my incipient “fogey” gene. Mentl, being a young musician, probably wouldn’t have my prejudice, tho, so now I have to subject myself to some …
Jim Farris - Mentl’s a bit in the Zone right now - no telling how it will wind up!
Lora - The definition of “badassery” is bringing knives to a gunfight and winning.
http://roflrazzi.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/celebrity-pictures-v-hugo-weaving-knives-gunfight.jpg
Jorge - Thanks! Yes, it was definitely time to set the pretty light show aside and get back to blood and guts. Each thing in it’s place, mind you …
Steve - He brought a lot. >:)
Soulworker - You’ll have to see on that - It will be fun to see what happens if Mentl just weaves an enchantment with his guitar - or lute, or whatever.
Posernieub - I considered it, but it’s one of those scenes that just has the music over the visuals. If you need to, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH6dpX4J36g and read it again …
Captain Marsupial - In my best “Elvis,”
Thankyuverramuch …:)
Lora, Ami, I am taking notes …
Laz - Well, *I’m* having fun - glad you are, too. Though Squire James is right - that’s a pistol. And now, I’m thinking of the theme from “Have Gun Will Travel …”
Squire James, the limits are literally in Mentl’s mind, emotions and experience.
June 5th, 2009 at 7:52 pm
Love It!
June 5th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
are those specks of blood on mentl’s hand. It looks like it but who knows. And no I was not stairing at the pick for a long time. I just noticed it as I was reading the new comic suggestions.
June 5th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
I just have one thing to say.
Boom. Headshot. ^_^
June 5th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
Long time lurker here… If he were to want to turn them into sniveling pieces of goo, he could use “Welcome to my Nightmare” by Alice Cooper. On the lighter side, another love song that would certainly be in his arsenal for times when he is there for entertainment would be “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton.
June 5th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
Afterwards, does he sing “Happiness is a warm gun”?
June 6th, 2009 at 2:31 am
If it ever gets time to bring out the big guns in a ranked battle…. Does Mentl know the 1812 Overture?
June 6th, 2009 at 2:38 am
Heh, almost forgot, for close quarters melee fighting, there’s Jackyll’s the Lumberjack.
June 6th, 2009 at 5:46 am
Speaking of instrumental music - I’ve been wondering what Mentl could do with Godzilla…
June 6th, 2009 at 6:51 am
Muscle-powered projectile weapons are not guns. Magic might be considered one.
Seriously, though - are guns at all known in Zona’s world? Cannons? Gunpowder?
Yeah, bringing a knife into a gunfight and winning is one definition of badassitude. Zona, I think, could do it.
June 6th, 2009 at 9:47 am
He he, probably yes.
And that pic…awesome! But V is a badass, too.
Ami, you’re right: Angels and their divine intervention would be almost scary.
And now I am considering what other symphonic metal songs could be used…
Hmm, ‘the man with the golden gun’ from James Bond just hit me as a possible fight song. Depends on how literal Mentl needs the lyrics to be.
June 6th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
@JED - RE: Marilyn Manson:
Don’t let the lyrics or the stage persona fool you - he’s much like Alice Cooper in many ways. In interviews he is well-spoken, occasionally erudite, always articulate. Like Cooper, Manson is an artist who has crafted a persona with the specific intent to shock the viewer/listener, to challenge their assumptions, and push as many of their hot buttons as he can. Manson feels that his music SHOULD shock. It SHOULD offend, to some extent. In this way, he intends to challenge people to reexamine their view of the world. His music, and in particular his stage act, is in many ways a very long piece of performance art.
June 6th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
Addenda: Please don’t take the above to mean “I Like Marilyn Manson’s Music” - I don’t. But I’ve seen several interviews with him on video and read even more. As a person, he impresses me. As a musician… Eh. Not so much.
June 6th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Heh… Still thinking Deep Purple : The Battle rages on.
~Anihilation, kill them all, capitulation, watch the mighty fall… ~
June 6th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
If mentl needed some back up there’s always “Knights in white satton” and what faster method of getting away would be “Come sail away” could be a way home for Mentl if he was crazy enough to leave.
June 7th, 2009 at 12:07 am
Been lurking for a while now, but I too have to add my admiration. The gunsmoke from Mentl’s hand is wonderful, but I really love the way you ‘dressed’ Zona in the red dress of blood in panel 2.
A bit gory to TRULY imagine (dressed in blood), but in a way that’s very appropriate here. Kind of like putting on your ‘gameface’.
BTW, this is some of the most amazing 3D work I’ve ever seen. I cannot imagine how you manage to keep up your schedule. Perhaps, it’s just been too many years since I worked on any sort of 3D, but how long does it take you to render out a panel? Or can you render a full page all at one time?
June 7th, 2009 at 12:29 am
Let’s see…maybe Mentyl could make some of them switch sides with “I put a spell on you”….heh
June 7th, 2009 at 1:11 am
EK - Godzilla was brought up (the BOC version) but control was questioned…
Patrock - “Sail Away” or drive off in the “Pink Cadillac”?
June 7th, 2009 at 2:01 am
Actually, the song “Die my Darling” (covered by Metallica) would probably be the “I win Button”.
Music from Blind Guardian or Dragonfoce would be EPIC for all sorts of fun magical effects (Operation Ground and Pound comes to mind….)
June 7th, 2009 at 3:22 am
SWEET last panel
June 7th, 2009 at 4:16 am
@ Patrick: Actually, the song is “Nights in White Satin”. As in “satin sheets.” It’s a song about unrequited love, not medieval warriors. Sorry.
June 7th, 2009 at 8:30 am
Pink Cadillac?! I don’t know if Mentl would want to drive that
And I don’t think Zona or Tula can drive…
June 7th, 2009 at 8:30 am
Wonder what Mentl could do with Queen’s “It’s a kind of Magic” ?
June 7th, 2009 at 8:55 am
LoveitLoveitLOVEIT!!!! It’s almost physically painful waiting for each new page…I’ve never tried crack, but I think I get it now.
I think Christopher Cross (Sailing) might be a good escape/swift travel tune.
June 7th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
The “Nights/Knights In White Satin” discussion triggered a thought in this filkers head. What would happen if he changes the lyrics a bit. You say Will and Intent play a big part in his magic so methinks that would work nicely. Just a thought.
June 7th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
I second everyone on this one-I love this webcomic.
It would be interesting to see what would happen with Bye Bye Beautiful by Nightwish: Finally the hills are without eyes/ They are tired of painting a dead man’s face red/With their own blood/ They used to love having so much to lose/Blink your eyes just once and see everything in ruins
June 8th, 2009 at 7:23 am
What about ‘change of heart’ by Toto? That is an 80’s rock song, and I wonder if it could sway the urtts to fight for Mentl. Heh.
Also ‘I’m not afraid’ by Lacuna Coil could be a good morale/courage fighting song. ‘I’m not afraid/to take you down/and live my life as I want to/I’m not afraid’ Though I don’t think Zona or Tula needs it…
June 8th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
Nytsky - Theng-Kyew!
crazy1 - no - that’s just some red texturing on Mentl’s hand.
sleepinin - It’s not “boom” - it’s “POOM!” ;}
Hipponerdamus - Welcome to the club! Alice Cooper has always struck me as not taking himself seriously - and I do like some of his stuff. What can I say? He’s an old fart like me …:)
Ed - No, he sings “Voulez Vous Vouche’ Avec Moi” for a job well done.
Hypertophic - Not sure he’s up to projecting a whole orchestra and cannons with fireworks yet. Give him time, tho.
ekwhite - Which one? The Tojo soundtrack or Blue Oyster Cult?
Acipenser - No, there are no gunpowder weapons in this world. There are magickal “Poom” sticks, tho …
Lora - It might work for one reallllly important shot. Lulu would turn over in her grave, though. (”She’s not dead!” “This’ll kill her.”)
Jim Farris - I don’t know - I’m not easily shocked or offended, (You don’t know some of the stupid shit I’ve seen and done) but I’m very easily bored by kids trying to shock or offend me on purpose. Still, I will withhold judgment until I have personal experience.
Ed, unholydragoon - keep reeling off the titles. When one of you gets one right …
Moox - Thanks! And yet, that was the one that took the least amount of time.
Steve - I don’t know, yet. If it comes up, you’ll find out.
VoiceOfReason - Thanks! Tonight i”m putting together the next one!
Tricksterson All depends on how good his concentration is. That stuff takes practice and discipline.
Mishlady - Thanks for the nice vote! Nightwish, eh? (scribble-scribble-scribble …)
June 8th, 2009 at 11:47 pm
(With apologies to Nancy Sinatra)
(singing) Lizardman’s up in the air, how he got there I don’t care,
Tula needs some help alright, and I’ll make sure she wins the fight,
Bang Bang, I’ll shoot him down, Bang Bang, He’ll hit the ground, Bang Bang, that lovely sound, Bang Bang, I’m gonna shoot him down!
June 9th, 2009 at 9:06 am
I still stand by Shake, Rattle, and Roll ^_^
XD most of my experience is with more modern tunes. But out of curiosity, would Mentl be familiar with Elvis songs?
June 9th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
How could Mentl NOT be familiar with Elvis songs? It’s the right period and the right style.
June 9th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
You can’t interject Nightwish into this comic; that much awesomeness in one place would cause the world to implode.
June 9th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
First off… First post, and LOVE YOUR COMIC!!! Ok.. Fanboy aside. I was wondering about Mentl’s vast knowledge of music. I know you said its encyclopedic, and ranges from the modern to WAY BACK! What about the genere? Im sure you answered this before and I missed it some place, sry. Would he be able to swing from say a Buddy Holly (oddly the first thing that popped in my head o.o) to say White Zombie? Im with the others when I am awaiting “Iron Man” to come rolling out of him in the future. I am interested in seeing if he does go down some nice Heavy Metal songs in times of need. I can see Metallica “Master of Puppets” comming in handy at some point. I can go on and on about the endless applications of varied songs. This is a nice unique flip you introduced here.. Kudos! Keep up the great work, and Ill keep comming back for my fix!
June 10th, 2009 at 12:09 am
Mentl should know Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust for a nice mass-effect spell. ;2)
