What a great pensive look on Zona’s face in the last panel!
Really nice incentive picture also.
Can’t wait for Tula to reappear.

This is so good. I wish you could do a page a day.

Ouch…Major Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for Mentl…given the previous layout for his persona, this could lead to some major issues or changes in his character. He has really lost a part of innocence that we often don’t like to talk about (but often see in our men and women who have seen combat). Given Zona’s persona it will be interesting to see how her empathy and love for Mentl (because of his genuineness and sensitivity) will mix with her warrior instincts and distain for the Urrt (or in this case Urr-Nait). Her expression in the final panel suggests that she may be starting to wrestle with this already. Just some thoughts…Really like the progression of the story thus far JED…Am a bit curious about what is going on in Normos and with our big, bad evil (and now cyclopean) Urrt Priest. =D

This could go so many ways. Can´t wait for the next page.

I’m glad he doesn’t feel good about that too. If he did, he might become a sadistic murderous super-mage. Erogena has to many of those already.

Not necessarily PTSD, since by a practical definition, it has to be an impairing problem. It is a situation that can be resolved, but Mentl has to work through it, although Zona, Tula and Vito can all help. Yes, it is a loss of innocence, but we have all had that and it is more than possible to be kind, caring, empathic and be ready to make potentially lethal decisions at the drop of a hat to defend you and yours. Unfortunately in the modern world, we aren’t as familiar with dealing with that and helping people through it.

Thanks for the comments, kids!
Just my own $.02: The last thing I want is to have Mentl become a whiney emo, but on the other hand, I also sort of put myself in his shoes, and all the extraordinary and stressful things that have happened to him in the last few weeks, and especially in the last three days, are not things that real people from San Bernardino are going to just emotionally “walk off” and then wear an insouciant grin whilst slinging lightning bolts to fry the bad guys and snogging the princess in the down time like it was The Wild Wild West. Anyway, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.

With PTSD or not, I hope Zona gives all social support that Mentl needs to cope with the flashbacks.
Again, JE, you are the best! You should print and sell this! I’ll buy it!
April 14th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Oh no JE, the LAST thing you’re making Mentl look like is a whiny emo kid. Like you said, he’s had a rough time the last few weeks since coming to Zona’s world, and the last few hours have been the roughest so far. I think he can be excused for having a tough time processing it all.
And having to kill someone, well, how well would any of US be able to deal with that, even in self-defense? I just hope that Zona is able to muster the sympathy and empathy to help him through this, and doesn’t think any less of him for not being able to just “walk it off”. After all, I’ll bet Zona had her own mixed feelings about her own “first kill”.
April 14th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
Yes that woud be A great flash back for Zona to have now while Mentl is sorting out his feelings. It coud show her first Kill and, shock at what it takes out of you to have to kill or be killed. (just A thought)

Poor Mentl! He needs about three metric tons of chocolate. And some serious cuddle/snuggle time. :’(
ANYWAY, keep up the AMAZING work, Sir Draft! I await Friday’s page with bated breath! ^_^
April 14th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
Chocolate doesn’t work so well for guys. Under those circumstances we need a good strong brew. Or 10.

Mentl doesn’t come off as a whiny emo to me. He certainly is traumatised by what has happened both with Ginsha and the power he unleashed later on in the caves. If he didn’t have a reaction I’d be questioning his character and would be disappointed.
And it looks like Zona DOES understand what he’s going through, given her expression in the last panel, despite her, moments before, describing what she would have done if Ginsha were in front of her at that very moment.
April 14th, 2009 at 11:27 pm
Everybody’s talking about the emotions on this page, and I get it. This is a real clash of cultures. I’m sure in the other world Mentl had probably been beaten up a couple of times, and maybe socked someone in a bar brawl. But most people barely see dead animals, let alone kill young girls. Whoo.
But for me the art is really so lovely here. JE, comparing the facial expressions you’re doing now to when you started. They are just so expressive. And, I know panel 4 is horrible and shocking, it’s also so different and so beautiful from anything I’ve seen before. How can something so nasty have such lovely colors in it? The artist renders the ugly with the the same passion as the beautiful. You are an artist. It’s been a joy to watch you grow.

Agreed JED/Macnut/Teri…I don’t think he is whiny/emo here either…Each of you has indicated what I thought as I first looked through the latest page. based on what we know about him and his history, this is gonna be a tough one for Mentl to get past…It is one thing to take a calculated risk by standing up to a charmed queen…or to defend your beloved with a frying pan (facing your own death), but taking another’s life is heavy stuff even if Vito tried to “innoculate” him by portraying the Urrt as truly inhuman.
Capt Marsupial is also quite correct…I think the art work here (the expressions in particular) is quite exceptional. It really conveys the anguish he is feeling and Zona’s attempts to both rationalize it and support her lover. I also think that several of the other commenters were correct in whether she was remembering what the reaction to her first kill was like…
April 15th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
…and Zona’s expression says “Not reeeeealllyyy…”
Because she DOES live in the Wild, Wild West. Has all her life. And while she may recognize what Mentl’s trying to do, and how that might square with her mother’s teachings, she has the experience to know that his approach likely to be a suicide ticket unless he adapts. It will either destroy him inside because he keeps having to protect himself and the people around him with lethal force (like Vito said, no f—ing around). Or, it will give an enemy an opening that will kill him or kill someone close to him, because he dithers or doesn’t get the job done when the chips are down. Somewhere, he has to find the warrior’ balance that lets Zona realize her error with Keltan and mend it in time - while still being able to kill when she needs to, and then leave the battlefield on the battlefield, rather than carrying it with her.
But now is not the time to have that conversation, and she knows it. Something for Tula to help her with, maybe, by preparing the ground at a later date. Right now, the only thing she can do or Mentl is just hug him, and share some of her strength.
April 15th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
Mentl is not a whiny emo because he can put his feelings aside and get what needs to be done done, THEN reflect. He escapes, THEN reflects after they are out of there.
April 16th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
Well, Mentl has to deal with the way he used magic, That he probably killed someone, that he took control of her then hit her when she wasn’t looking - it’s all a lot for him to deal with, and Zona will only be able to understand some of it, I’m guessing. I think Tula will be needed before he can work it all out - this won’t be completely solved in one page
April 16th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Here Mentl proves that he is worthy of great power: Those who are worthy of possessing great power always second guess themselves.
A tyrant, mor potential tyrant would have never looked back.
April 16th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
Mentl is definitely not being emo, as so many have said. He’s quite genuinely traumatized - but then, this world is a ‘Wild Wild West’. Definitely not used to that. He did what he had to, but . . . .
I agree with Steve, this isn’t a one-page solution, and I think Tula, even Vito are going to be needed before Mentl really works this out. Zona’s wonderful, warm, and sympathetic, but she’s not physically in the same location when it comes to lethal choices, and while Tula’s a lot closer, Vito’s the one who’d know Mentl’s background and it’s influences on him.
