Ah Ha! I knew it!! The birds and the bees courtesy of Zona…..
Great work, as always JE!!!
April 3rd, 2009 at 12:44 am
And what an education she’ll get too-Keltan’s gonna owe Zona big for this.
April 3rd, 2009 at 1:34 am
Nerd Girlz are the cutest.
Especially when packin´ DD´s.
April 3rd, 2009 at 1:53 am
Heeheehee! Oh, I’m so pleased! Zona’s just the right woman for her to learn from - no inihibitions, and a solid dose of common sense. And Liri’s a nerdy girl! Adorable!
Yes, Keltan owes Zona BIGTIME for this.
Hmm, I’m taking it Liri’s hair is really sunbleached from being outside so much? The color seems a little too even for that - the under-hair would be darker if that was the case.
April 3rd, 2009 at 1:54 am
And I just realized her eyebrows would be somewhat sunbleached too. Mind you, I like the color they are now - distinctive and easy to read expressions with.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:33 am
I think Liri is just naturally tow headed with some extra benefit from an outdoor lifestyle. I Have 2 neices and a nephew who spent most of their summers out doors as kids and their hair was practically white.
Oh where oh where were those nerdy girls with their notebooks when I was in school…SIGH.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:00 am
I was hoping this would be what would happen. The previous comic had me cringing - in real life, when large creatures fall, they break bones.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:19 am
Let me get my notebook. OMG, Liri just wins the day
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:29 am
Yeah… Liri’s gonna need that notebook with Zona!
(Was one of those nerdy girls with a notebook in school…
)
April 3rd, 2009 at 7:00 am
ahhahahha let me get my note book very nice
April 3rd, 2009 at 8:12 am
Morning Zonafans;
John, you are wonderful…..amazing even:-) but, you know this already, right?
Ok; I was wrong about “the great Zona smack down”, which really wasn’t a smack down.[ “I feel the earth move under my feet… I feel the sky Tumble lin dowm…I feel my heart start to trembling”…sorry; Carol King moment].
I like the way this turned out (Yes JE you really do know best:-)) I like the girl talk turning into “mentor” talk. The “everyone is important” speech is really valuable; this is what turned the tide. It gives Liri permission to reflect on her own self worth, not as a bumbling giant, but as a person. Perfect…. and yes, Kelten isn’t going to know what hit him LOL.
OK… so if one giant falls in the forest while another secretly pines…… sorry couldn’t resist.
Happy Friday!

ah, I really enjoyed this! great work, visually and in character development too.
April 3rd, 2009 at 11:44 am
Did you all REAALLY think it would turn out any other way? Seriously?
Thanks to all who posted! Lebbrin, I think you’re getting an insight into my style, which means I have to change, now.
Macnut, yeppers. Zona has *extensive* practical experience, and no problem imparting it.
hans, as I said earlier, them ain’t DDs. I think we’re beyond XYZZ …
Silentsteel, glad you’re pleased, not half so pleased as Keltan will be. Sometimes all we need to get beyond our inhibitions is some guidance and a little permission, which Liri’s never had.
Gmac, Liri’s naturally tow-headed, which four of my tow-headed brother’s children are. Outdoor life does, indeed, bleach it, but she has naturally dark reddish eyebrows. Honestly, from an artistic standpoint, I will never have a character with lashes or brows that are so light you can’t tell their expression. It just makes storytelling that much harder. Same reason you’ll never see an actress on TV without some kind of mascara, even if it’s subtle. You have to be able to read the eyes.
Jim Farris, we’d fortunately already established that giants are incredibly tough. So, really, Liri’s not hurt at all. Just utterly astonished. After all, no one and nothing has ever put her on her ass in this way in her life. Giants have very big feet and are usually pretty stable. On the other hand, she’s a trifle top-heavy, as some have noticed …:)
Fumiko, Keltan actually comes out the big winner.
Jailbyrd, and what notes were you takin’, hm, there, in the margins of the books while teach had his back to the class?
race, yes, I thought it was a cute line. You always have to set these things up for a payoff.
Nytsky, yes I am wonderful, I really am.
You’re not so bad, yourself. I hope you’re just as pleased with Tuesday’s update as you are with today’s. After all, we still have a whole Zona-Mentl, Tula-healing, On-our-way-back-to-The-Valley-Of The Moon thing to be getting on with!
And Carol King rocks. I can’t believe she’s 67 years old. Still a hot gramma, IMHO.
April 3rd, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Let’s hope that notebook has a LOT of pages; this could tke a while…
JE, another nice job.
and I agree bout Carol King.
April 3rd, 2009 at 12:48 pm
I love their look in panel 4. While looking at that panel, I notice a gust of wind must of pop up while “setting” the scene. Dang it if I didn’t have enough to think about today.
Also in panel one did Zona’s legs get really muscular while bringing down Liri? Never notice them before. Wonder why………
Good Job as always can’t wait till next update.
April 3rd, 2009 at 1:41 pm
I’m so glad this didn’t turn into a smackdown because there’s no realistic way it wouldn’t have turned into a slaughter. Liri may be nearly three time’s her size but Zona has more combat experience and killer instinct in her little finger than Liri.
Hans, Liri’s *nipples* are DD.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Karyl, than-kyew! Glad you’re enjoying the show.
Timeghost - oh, yeah. LOTS of pages. See, here at Challenges Of Zona we try to emphasize that smart IS sexy.
melon, yeah, the air moves - or I try to give the impression that it does . And Zona’s legs have always been very buff - the lighting is what is accentuating it here.
Tricksterson, yeah, really it could have ended with Zona just dodging until Liri ran out of breath, but I really didn’t want to drag the scene out like that. Plus, I’ve never been a big fan of “hero VS hero” brawls.
“Hey! What are you doing up on this rooftop in a costume? I don’t know you, so, since I think you look suspicious! I will have to fight you!”
“Suspicious? Look who’s talkin’, cape-brain!”
Biff! Pow! Zap!
“Wait! You’re a good guy?”
“Yeah, like I tried to tell you four pages of wanton property destruction ago.”
We try to avoid that sort of thing, here.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:14 pm
*flashbacking to monty python* “SO you’ve got her in bed, her feet up are up on the mantle and she’s got great big-”
OOOOOOOUT!
*sips root beer*
*plays ‘let’s talk about sex’ by… well whoever first wrote it*
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:41 pm
Nerdy girls are thorough. Keltan is not going to know what hit him.
April 3rd, 2009 at 11:12 pm
Melon.. Good call on panel 4, I missed that. Heck, even JE missed your meaning. Now I, too, have more to think about.
(If Melon and I are now the only ones who gets it, holler and I’ll be more descriptive.)
JE, keep up the great work. By the increase in comments it should be obvious you are doing a great job.
April 4th, 2009 at 8:45 am
Holy fornicating SUVs Batman. Be creative people.
I´m talking relative boobage measurements there.
April 5th, 2009 at 3:56 am
haha let me get my notebook! love it
April 5th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
‘let me get my notebook’.
‘though, just in case that doesn’t work… could you and Mentl give a few practical demonstrations?’
April 5th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
And I can that being fine with Zona too-though Mentl may need some persuading to “perform” in front of an audience….
April 6th, 2009 at 9:21 am
“‘though, just in case that doesn’t work… could you and Mentl give a few practical demonstrations?’
ZONA: Well, sure, if you w-
MENTL: No.
ZONA: But -
MENTL: No. A line. Here. I draw a line.
April 6th, 2009 at 11:02 am
Oh, BTW, Lebbrin and Melon, I don’t think that’s what you think it is. Zona’s a natural blonde.
April 6th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
I doubt that Liri’s ever heard the straight facts about what’s going on in her own body every month, either.
April 7th, 2009 at 9:58 am
Man that must be a tiny string thong. I dont even see it in the first panel.
Whew you guys had me worried though thought I was being……
April 7th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
Oh and dummy me should of know that, going through the “Hot Stuff” section
About natural blonde that is
April 7th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
The pants on the thing are pretty narrow, but wide enough (in these types of tales) to rationalize that they minimally cover her for modesty.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
PoserNieub, it remains to be seen - or not. Still, if she knows, she never learned it at home.
May 6th, 2009 at 9:07 am
I finally decided to post a comment, after months and months of reading. And it’s just to say that I wish that Zona would give me the talk.
May 6th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Lizzybear, in a way, Liri’s a lot like all of us, male and female, in our culture. Sex is all around us, and so overblown in its importance, both negative and positive. And yet, we still don’t get told the real nuts and bolts of it - mostly how it really *feels* as opposed to media hype, fears and fantasy - when we’re young and most need it. Yeah, imagine if you had an older, really experienced friend to clue you into what you could expect. Someone who didn’t judge you and had answers to most or all of your questions and anxieties. How cool would that be?
