Hey all!

There’s a special story behind this particular installment of NIGHTMARE WORLD, so I hope you’ll all indulge me for a few moments while I tell it.

I finished drafting the first ever NIGHTMARE WORLD (which was “Momma’s Boy” for those of you keeping track at home) back in January 2003 and wrote the script for the 52nd and last story of the series in August 2008.

During those years I dabbled in a few other writing projects (including the first six chapters of the NIGHTMARE WORLD spin-off series TALES OF MR. RHEE, a fantasy-esque comic series(!!!) called FARSEEKER and the semi-weekly motivational/how-to column “Write or Wrong” for www.Newsarama.com)… but rarely a day went by during those five years that I wasn’t actively involved in working on something NIGHTMARE WORLD-related.

Needless to say, the day I finished writing that last NIGHTMARE WORLD script was a bittersweet one for me… but all in all I was happy that the bulk of the heavy-lifting was done, and that I could focus my writing attentions more on some of my other projects.

Because my teams and I had a tendency to work ahead (combined with some ugly hosting issues I won’t get into here), the final story didn’t run until 2008, by which time all of the dangling and interweaving plot-threads were tied into a nice little bow… except one.

While I’m obviously not going to get into any spoilers here, there’s one bit of information that numerous people — including some who even worked with me on the series! — continued to ask me about.

I had thought I addressed the plot-point in question clearly, albeit cryptically, in the pages of the series itself — but the continued inquiries about it finally lead me to realize that, alas, perhaps I was a little to subtle and arcane for my own good this time.

However, as I said, by this point NIGHTMARE WORLD was finished and I felt it would be a bit odd to go back and address it… unless, I joked, we were picked-up by Image or something.

Heh.

Considering that this is exactly what happened (in a most unexpected way, I assure you), I felt it was only fair for me to keep my word and indeed go back and tell that one story that I, in truth, always wanted to tell but never did… until now.

I first wrote and published this story back on the original (and now defunct) NIGHTMARE WORLD website in 2003. At the time it was only the seventh story I had even written, but to this day (over 70 published short stories later) I still think it’s one of the best ones I’ve even written.
